OnePlus Nord 2 First Impressions: Quite Exotic for Mid-Range

Posted: 07 Sep 2021 10:10 AM PDT

OnePlus Nord 2 OnePlus Nord 2 came out well over a month ago in July. I got the new 'Green Woods' colour which went on sale very recently. Right out of the box, the smartphone looks very clean and premium. I haven't seen the other two colours physically, but after seeing the 'Green Woods' variant, I don't think I would want to either. There are plenty of things that I love about the Nord 2 upon using it for the first time. Let me tell you everything in detail.

OnePlus Nord 2 First Impressions: Body Design and Display

OnePlus Nord The OnePlus Nord 2 is honestly one of the most beautiful smartphones I have held in my hands. The 'Green Woods' variant is just so premium that I wish it was offered in the flagship OnePlus 9 series. Regardless, OnePlus made a really good decision by going with this colour. The body is slim and light. The rear is made of PU leather with some subtle textures on it, which is really good. There is a USB Type-C port at the bottom, and just beside that are the speakers. The volume rockers are on the left side of the smartphone, and the power button is on the right. There is an in-display fingerprint sensor so the smartphone unlocking experience is ultra-smooth. The camera bump is very similar to that of the OnePlus 9. Just above the power button at the right is the 'alert slider', which is just very clicky when moving and gives a very satisfying feel. The front camera sensor is in a punch-hole cutout at the top left. OnePlus Nord 2 Display The display looks really smooth and great in terms of colour. It has something really sharp about it. The details are really good, and I like the overall gist I am getting from it. I am sure the 90Hz refresh rate display won't feel any less smooth as I use it for the next few days. I honestly believe this is one of the best displays in this price segment in the Indian market. It is a 6.43-inch Fluid AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution.

OnePlus Nord 2 First Impressions: Camera

I haven't taken a lot of shots, but the camera looks really good. I will surely share a ton of pictures when I come out with the final review, but the overall camera layout looks very similar to what we saw in the OnePlus 9 series. There are additional camera modes in the camera app including 'Ultra Resolution', 'Movie', 'Dual-View Video', 'Slo-Mo', 'Time Lapse', and Pano mode. Then there are basic modes which are 'Expert', 'Photo', 'Video', and 'Night'.

You can also shoot in the '1x' mode, '0.6x', which is wide-angle-sensor, '2x', and '5x'. The zoom shots were very clear, and I really like the camera app because it is very simple and easy to use. The selfie sensor is quite good as well.

There are a few modes above for clicking pictures, such as 'AI' and 'HDR', which can be activated to click even better pictures. You can also add filters to the images by clicking on the 'three circles' kind of icon at the top of the screen. I could also very easily access the Google Lens right from the camera app, which was great.

OnePlus Nord 2 First Impressions: Performance and Conclusion

OnePlus Nord 2 runs on MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC. I have the 12GB RAM variant, so I expect everything to be smooth. The Dimensity 1200-AI SoC is expected to do everything I would want to. In the final review, I will for sure share the Geekbench results of the smartphone and the chipset. In terms of performance, I wouldn't want to comment anymore right now because I haven't completely used it yet. I plan to download some heavy games such as Asphalt to see how it will perform. The OnePlus Nord 2 is available in three different variants in India. The first variant comes with 6GB+128GB for Rs 27,999, second variant with 8GB+128GB for Rs 29,999, and 12GB+256GB variant for Rs 34,999. At this price range, this smartphone looks absolutely like a beast. You can play games, download heavy applications easily in both the 8GB and 12GB RAM variants. I could easily see myself using this for the next two years if I am going for a device in a mid-range segment. Enough now; more on the review later. I will extensively test the smartphone to see what it can and can't do. See you soon!

Satcom Sector Should Be Included In Relief Package from Govt: BIF

Posted: 07 Sep 2021 08:04 AM PDT

Satcom Sector Should Be Included In Relief Package from Govt: BIF As the telecom sector is facing a lot of issues, there is growing anticipation of relief measures for this sector. To help them, the government came up with relief package for the telecom operators. As the satcom sector is also facing similar issues, Broadband Forum India (BIF), the industry body has urged the government to come up with relief packages to this sector. This is important at a time when satellite communication is a significant part of digital communications.

Relief Package For Satcom Sector

BIF said that the relief package will facilitate equal and proportionate growth and make sure all technologies are playing a major role towards the 'Digital India' goals. In a letter to the Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash, BIF said that it is required that the satcom sector might kindly be considered for the proposed relief package. Also, the BIF President TV Ramachandran suggested some measures including an increase in the payment period for AGR dues, cut in Spectrum Usage Charges for VSAT Services from 4 per cent to 1 per cent, and reduction in interest burden on instalments of AGR payments by half to 4 per cent. Furthermore, BIF has sought a cut in the USOF component of licence fee to 3 per cent from 5 per cent. In turn, a uniform licence fee of 6 per cent will be levied rather than 8 per cent. It also noted that the assignment of satellite spectrum is currently done on an adhoc basis alongside an approval from the Minister of Communications.

Other Proposals From BIF

Other proposals from BIF to the ministry include the implementation of a single window approval mechanism for the satellite approvals as well as better dispute resolution mechanism along with the announcement of amnesty schemes to resolve AGR disputes. In the letter, BIF highlighted the authorising or assigning of spot frequencies. BIF added that they earnestly hope that their request will merit the consideration while finalising the satcom sector relief package as this sector is a part of the Digital Communications ecosystem. They seek satcom to be included as there are increasing expectations of a policy pill for the telecom sector.

Skyrocketing Chip Prices Might Impact Brands Like Apple

Posted: 07 Sep 2021 06:36 AM PDT

Skyrocketing Chip Prices Might Impact Brands Like Apple Amidst the pandemic crisis, we are already seeing a shortage in the supply of chips that have made manufacturers increase the cost of their smartphones. Now, the cost of semiconductors is all set to increase next year, thereby making chip manufacturers hike chip rates. This adds to the already existing global shortage of semiconductors that has impacted several industries on a global scale.

Skyrocketing Semiconductor Price

As per a report by NikkeiAsia, the cost of semiconductors are on the rise since the last year of 2020. The rates witnessed new highs due to the shortage in supply, and TMSC announced the major price hike ever in a decade. Currently, it is the world's largest contract chipmaker accounts over half the global foundry market. Also, TMSC has built chips for tech giants including Qualcomm, Apple, and NVIDIA, among others. Furthermore, the company is also known for its advanced chip technology. Usually, it charges a 20 per cent higher fee than its rivals. Now, with the shortage in the supply of semiconductors, TMSC is running on its entire capacity. Even small foundries have ramped up their pricing as there is high demand. The increased pricing is due to various factors, including logistics costs, expensive material and race between brands for a steady chip supply. The Taiwanese chipmaker was slower than many other foundries in increasing the costs, and this can be due to the premium cost that it already charges.

What To Expect?

As a result of the increased pricing of semiconductors, there will be an increase in the cost of consumer electronics products. These include smartphones, and we already see the result of it. Apple is one of the major TSMC clients, and the rising prices of semiconductors might leave an impact on the cost of iPads and iPhones as well. However, we can expect the tech giant to offset the cost to some extent due to its rapport with the chipmaker. We need to wait for further clarity regarding the consequences of the increased pricing of chips and how Apple will deal with this. There could be a change if the supply chain shortage is addressed.

BSNL Discontinues Prepaid Broadband Plans Across India

Posted: 07 Sep 2021 02:51 AM PDT

BSNL Discontinues Prepaid Broadband Services All Over India BSNL, the State-run telco is all set to discontinue its prepaid broadband service that is operational across all its telecom circles. Currently, the telco offers prepaid broadband only in the DSL segment and customers can avail of unlimited high-speed broadband internet access sans the concern of facing expensive monthly charges. It offered benefits such as mobility, sharing of DSL broadband connections, and control on internet charges among others. Previously, BSNL's prepaid broadband subscribers were let to use the broadband account wherever they are across India using an internet-enabled telephone line. Also, it was possible to share a DSL connection with a group of prepaid broadband customers such as professionals, students, etc. Furthermore, the service provider was providing limited and unlimited prepaid broadband plans for all its users across India. All these benefits were available for BSNL prepaid broadband users starting from as low as Rs 200. Despite the affordable pricing and ample set of benefits, this service had a very small customer base. Now, BSNL has decided to close the prepaid broadband service by migrating existing customers to postpaid.

BSNL Discontinues Prepaid Broadband Services

According to a report from KeralaTelecom, the authorities of BSNL have directed the operational telecom circles to migrate the existing prepaid DSL broadband users to postpaid services. This will be done by transferring their existing prepaid account balance as credit related to their respective postpaid accounts. Interested customers can opt for BSNL Bharat Fiber (FTTH) or Bharat Air Fiber (BAF) services as there will be limitations in the maximum upload and download speeds. Already, BSNL launched a special discount scheme for its existing landline customers who are switching to BSNL FTTH. As a part of this promotional offer, landline customers can avail of up to Rs 600 discount while they migrate to BSNL Fiber. Now, customers can retail their landline number and upgrade their old BSNL telephone line to the next-gen ultra-fast Bharat Fiber connection. To retain the landline number, users have to submit the form to the BSNL telephone exchange or customer service center. Notably, the BSNL FTTH monthly plans start from Rs 399 and offer 30 Mbps download speed. Also, these plans offer unlimited voice calls for free of cost without any additional charges.

WhatsApp Might Soon Bring This Clever Feature

Posted: 07 Sep 2021 12:39 AM PDT

WhatsApp WhatsApp, one of the biggest texting applications in the world, might soon bring a clever new feature for the users. This feature would allow users to hide 'last seen', 'About', and 'profile picture' from contacts. You might be wondering that how is this a new feature since users can do all of it right now as well. But the thing is, they can't do it with select users. WhatsApp allows users to hide profile pictures with contacts that are not saved on your device, but it doesn't allow you to hide profile pictures with contacts saved on your device. To do that, you would have to block the concerned contact. Further, WhatsApp allows to hide 'last seen' with contacts, but the setting is then applied to each and every contact. However, this might all soon change. Here's what you should know about the expected upcoming feature from WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Might Soon Allow Users to Do This

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp may soon allow users to hide the 'last seen', 'profile picture' and 'About' from select contacts and no one at all. Right now, users can't do all of this in the capacity that WhatsApp might soon allow the users to do. The report mentioned that the Facebook-owned application is currently testing the feature and might roll it out soon. So now, if you have to hide your last seen from a particular contact, you can do that. This feature from the application is definitely in the right direction as it will increase the privacy that the users get. However, note that if the users hide their 'last seen' from a particular contact, even they won't be able to see the other contact's last seen. So the privacy features will be a two-way street. If you don't want to show your activity to others, you can't see theirs either, simple as that which makes sense.

Apple iPhone 13 Expected to Come With 13.7% Faster Processor

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 11:19 PM PDT

Apple iPhone 13 Expected to Come With 13.7% Faster Processor Apple iPhone 13 series is all set to be launched on September 14. Like last year, the company is expected to take the wraps off four new models this year as well. These are likely to include the iPhone 13 standard variant, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Now, further details regarding these models are hitting the rumour mills with each passing day. It is speculated that Apple will bring some internal upgrades to the upcoming models. Already, it was hinted that the battery capacity of the Pro models would be relatively bigger to fuel the 5G + 120 Hz combo. Now, it has been hinted that the iPhone 13 series will use a faster Apple A15 chip that will come with notable improvements.

Apple A15 Bionic Chip Improvements

As per the tipster, Tron and Clien, who tipped the support for LEO satellite communication in select regions, have once again shared another hint. As per a benchmark test of the Apple A15's GPU chip from a July batch, the upcoming A-series chip is said to be 13.7 per cent faster than the existing A14 chip. The Manhattan 3.1 GPU benchmark test also reveals that the A15 chip can reach 198 FPS in the first round of testing. In the second round, it dropped between 140 and 150 FPS. This is better than the performance of the A14 chip in the Manhattan 3.1 testing, which is 170.7. Furthermore, the tipster shared Manhattan 3.1 GPU test numbers of the Samsung Exynos 2200 on cards for its next-gen flagship models. In the third round, the Exynos 2200 GPU scored 127.5 FPS, while that of the A15 is higher. These figures hint that Apple will continue to retain an edge over its Android rivals.

Apple iPhone 13 Upgrades

Given that the Apple iPhone 13 series will be sequels to the iPhone 12 models launched last year, these are expected to come with notable upgrades. Going by the same, the company is expected to bring a 120 Hz LTPO display on the Pro models. Also, there will be a relatively smaller notch on all four iPhone models. Moreover, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models are said to feature some camera upgrades. There will be three camera sensors along with a LiDAR sensor. Also, the ultra-wide sensor will arrive with autofocus support, added the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The company is speculated to bring a 6-piece lens rather than the existing 5-piece lens. Already, we can come across reports suggesting the presence of ProRes video recording, new filters and other new video features.

Vodafone Idea Stock Up By 9.66% Early Tuesday Session

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 10:01 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea The talks about a relief package coming soon have helped Vodafone Idea (Vi) stock majorly. The company's shares are 9.66% in the green early Tuesday session. Vodafone Idea's stock has reached the figure of Rs 7.95 at the time of writing which is 9.66% up. Vi's stock opened at Rs 7.30 and touched a low of Rs 7.15 for a brief point. The previous close for the stock was Rs 7.25, so it had opened on a high because of the market expectations. At the same time, it is interesting to see major telecom stocks of Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) oscillating between red and green. Both Bharti Airtel and RIL stocks had gained a lot in the last few trading days. The reason behind Idea (Vi) stock going so high could be the recent developments and the reports coming in about the relief package and how the telco can save thousands of crores.

Vodafone Idea Stock/Share Price Up Because of Expected Relief Package

Vodafone Idea's stock has shot up almost 10% in the morning because of the market expectations. Multiple analyst reports came in yesterday saying that Vodafone Idea could save thousands of crores if it is allowed by the government to pay less interest for multiple statutory dues. Further, if the government comes in with a relief package this month, it would provide the telco with much-needed relief in the short term. This will further help Vodafone Idea in investing the saved money in its 4G networks and also allow the telco to prepare for 5G. According to BNP Paribas, Vodafone Idea can potentially save up to Rs 6,600 crores immediately if the government decides to reduce the interest rate charged on the deferred spectrum liabilities and relieves the telco from paying interest on the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. All these reports could be the reason to fuel the fire that Vi's stock has gained Tuesday morning.

BSNL, Vi, Jio, Airtel Maximum Users Might Want 84, 365 Days Plans

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 08:35 PM PDT

BSNL, Vi, Jio, Airtel Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio, and Bharti Airtel are the four telecom operators in India at the moment. All the operators offer similar kinds of prepaid plans but have different strategies for acquiring customers. But there's one thing that all of the operators can benefit from, and that is by focusing on the 84 days and 365 days plans. We ran a poll to check how many people would prefer a prepaid plan with the following validities – 28 days, 56 days, 84 days, and 300+ days. To no surprise, most of the people voted that they would go for the 84 days or the 300+ days plans.

84 Days and 300+ Days Plans Can Be Focused On By BSNL, Vi, Jio, and Airtel

Twitter We ran a short poll of one day on Twitter and got a total of 454 votes. Out of these votes, 43.6% were for the 84 days plans, 37% for the 300+ days plans, 10.8% for the 28 days plans, and 8.6% for the 56 days plans. Clearly, not many are interested in the 56 days offerings, while 28 days plans also didn't get much love from the people. But users see value in 84 days and 300+ days validity plans. This is understandable since long-term plans tend to come at a slightly discounted rate and offer more benefits generally. All of the telecom operators, including BSNL, Vi, Jio, and Airtel, offer users plans that come with such validities. But is there more room for the operators to grow in the area? For sure, and especially with the coming age of 5G, where new plans would be introduced, the telcos can bring some strong 84 days and 300+ days validity plans for the users. Right now, Reliance Jio and BSNL offer some of the cheapest long-term and medium-term prepaid plans in India. However, BSNL's plans aren't backed by a 4G network which gives Jio an edge over its competitors.

Vodafone Idea Offers the Best Rs 400 Plan Among Jio, Airtel

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 06:42 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) is the third-largest telecom operator in India. The telco is often criticised for not offering the best network coverage, but its plans are no doubt the best in the industry. In multiple aspects, the plans from Vodafone Idea are much better than its competitors, including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Almost every high-end plan of Vodafone Idea comes with better benefits than its rivals. There is one plan that all of the telcos offer under Rs 400, and it is the Rs 399 plan. Out of all the operators, Vodafone Idea’s (Vi) Rs 399 plan is the best. There are multiple reasons for this; let's go through them.

Vodafone Idea Rs 399 Plan Details Compared With Airtel, Jio Plans

Vodafone Idea Rs 399 plan offers customers a ton of benefits. Starting with the basic benefits, users get 1.5GB of daily data, 100 SMS/day, and unlimited voice calling. This plan carries a validity of 56 days. Further, there are additional offers of 'Weekend Data Rollover' and 'Binge All Night' provided to the company. Users also get multiple over-the-top (OTT) benefits of ZEE5 Premium for one year and Vi Movies & TV. Let's see what the other operators are offering for the same price. Bharti Airtel also offers 1.5GB daily data with its Rs 399 plan. The plan further promises users unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. The Rs 399 plan from Bharti Airtel also comes for 56 days. There are additional Airtel Thanks benefits offered to the users. These benefits include a free one month trial of Amazon Prime Video Mobile Edition, Wynk Music, Apollo 24/7 Circle, Free Hellotunes, one year of Shaw Academy, and Rs 100 cashback on FASTag transactions. Reliance Jio also offers the same benefits as that of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) with its Rs 399 plan. The only difference between these plans is in the additional benefits offered. Reliance Jio gives users 1.5GB of daily data with unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. But the additional benefits don't include any major OTT subscription. Jio offers a free subscription of five apps to the users with this plan which includes JioCloud, JioCinema, JioTV, JioNews, and JioSecurity. It is worth noting that only Vodafone Idea (Vi) is offering a major OTT benefit of ZEE5 Premium to the users. None of the other telcos offers any such benefit. Further, Vodafone Idea users can consume much more data with its two offers, including the 'Weekend Data Rollover' and 'Binge All Night' offers.

Vodafone Idea Can Save Thousands of Crores With Govt Help

Posted: 06 Sep 2021 12:58 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) can get a major relief if the government of India (GoI) allows it to surrender all the unused spectrum. At the moment, the telcos can also trade the spectrum with each other or keep it with them even if they are not using it. Not only that is wastage of a scarce national resource, but it also burdens the telcos' without being of any use. However, if the rule was to change and the GoI allowed the loss-making telco to surrender all of its unused spectrum, it will be able to cut from its Rs 1.9 lakh crore worth of debt from its shoulders, believes BNP Paribas.

Vodafone Idea Can Benefit a Ton If Government Reduces Interest Rate

Further, according to BNP Paribas, if the government reduces the interest rate charged on the deferred spectrum liabilities, Vodafone Idea can potentially save thousands of crores. According to Kunal Vora, a senior telecom analyst at BNP Paribas, even a reduction of 2% annual interest in the deferred spectrum liability of Vodafone Idea (Vi) would result in savings of Rs 2,100 crore for the telco. Further, shall the government decides to relieve Vodafone Idea from the interest that it has to pay on the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, the telco can further reduce debt by up to Rs 4,000 – Rs 4,500 crores. In total, the two measures taken would let Vi reduce debt by up to Rs 6,600 crore immediately which will be a huge thing for the telco. Any immediate relief for Vodafone Idea would in turn allow the telco to invest all the extra cash in its networks so that it can expand coverage and also be ready for 5G along with its rivals including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Also, a tariff hike of Rs 30 for VI ( Vodafone Idea) would result in additional revenues of Rs 9,000 crores for the telco. It is now only a matter of time before the government will announce relief measures for the sector.
