TRAI, DoT Working to Optimise Spectrum Bands for 5G, Satellite Services Posted: 11 Oct 2021 06:29 AM PDT The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have been working together to optimise the spectrum bands that will be used for both 5G and satellite broadband services. Spectrum is a finite resource, and thus harmony between the satcom players and the telcos must be ensured. The airwaves in the 'C' and 'Ka' bands will be very important for delivering high-speed internet for both satellites and the 5G service providers. The government and the sector have an uphill battle here where they need to decide whether the spectrum for satcom players will go through the auction route or it will be allotted to them in a different manner. DoT Taking TRAI Consultation to Understand What to Do With Frequency BandsAccording to an ET Telecom report, the telecom secretary, K Rajaram, said that spectrum is a finite resource, and thus it needs to be considered who its existing users are and who will be the new players to use it. Rajaram said that DoT is included in the consultation exercise with the TRAI. It is worth noting that DoT is also waiting for the TRAI to come out with the recommendations for the revised price of the revised spectrum bands that will be sold to the telcos in the coming auction. The telcos and the satcom players both have a different outlook towards spectrum usage. The telcos believe that the spectrum should be provided to every party involved through an auction. However, the satcom players believe that the spectrum in the 28 GHz band should be provided for satellite services without an auction route. This will be a tough decision for the government. It is because the satcom players stand to lose out on a big chunk of investments if they have to purchase the spectrum through the auction. However, the telcos are not wrong in demanding a fair way of spectrum allotment for everyone involved.
WhatsApp Trying to Improve on Voice Message Feature Posted: 11 Oct 2021 05:06 AM PDT One of the largest social media applications, WhatsApp, is now trying to improve its voice message feature by adding support for pausing the recording. Currently, if a user is sending a voice note to a contact, he/she needs to record it all in one go. There's no option for pausing the recording. But according to a WABetaInfo, the Facebook-owned texting application is working on bringing support for pausing voice note recording. This will allow the users in recording their complete message in a single voice note instead of sending multiple voice notes. WhatsApp Brought Changes Recently to Voice Messaging FeatureWhatsApp recently brought changes to the voice message feature for the users. Up until a few months back, users only had the option of listening to a voice note at normal speed. This was a heavy task for users who got lengthy voice notes from their colleagues or loved ones. But now, the users have the option to listen to the voice notes at 1x, 1.5x, and 2x speeds. There is no support for listening to the voice messages at a slowed speed which is less than 1x, but that works for now. The new feature for being able to pause the voice note, which is recording and then resuming from there, will be rolled out to a few iOS beta users. The wider rollout of the future can be expected in the coming months. The publication has confirmed that this feature will also come for Android users very soon. These changes will certainly add to the user experience in a positive way for people across the world. This is a much-needed voice note feature, and it will save people a lot of time and a lot of confusion about which voice note they had to listen to. More changes to the application in the other areas will arrive soon, as noted by WABetaInfo.
Govt Should Provide Access to Any Frequency for Satcom Providers: PJ Nath Posted: 11 Oct 2021 03:38 AM PDT PJ Nath, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Nelco Ltd, a Tata-owned company, said that the government should provide access to any frequency to operate for the satellite communications provider. It is worth noting that earlier this morning, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, launched the Indian Space Association (ISpA). In light of the same, Nath shared a few things with the Prime Minister. Nath acknowledged the growth that the space industry has witnessed in the last five to six years. The Nelco CEO mentioned how the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), and the Ministry of Electronics and Technology (MeitY) had supported the industry. Nath Requests Government to Give Access to Global CustomersPJ Nath made a few requests from the government during the event. Firstly, Nath requested to introduce the spacecom policy as early as possible. On top of this, he requested the implementation of the policy and licenses in no time. Nath said that land mobility for satellite communications is to be allowed. Further, the Nelco CEO said that the government should allow the satcom providers access to any frequency they want for providing services. He also mentioned that the licenses should be provided with certain flexibility so that ease of doing business increases. Lastly, Nath mentioned that the Indian satcom providers should be given access to global customers and also be allowed to import technology from around the world. While Nath has pure intentions behind asking for permission to import technologies, the Indian government would very much like to avoid that as much as possible. This is because of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission of the Modi government. But it will be crucial for the sector to be allowed to import the equipment and technology from outside India for a low cost so that it can be possible for the companies to roll out services at affordable costs.
Google Pixel Pass Might Come Bundled With Free Smartphone Posted: 11 Oct 2021 01:42 AM PDT Google Pixel Pass Leaked Details, Everything to KnowLee shared the Pixel Pass details on Twitter with everyone. In the image the leakster shared, it can be seen that the Pixel Pass is a monthly subscription that will address the needs of mobile users. The subscription comprises a free Pixel phone along with key first-party services, which include Google One, Play Pass, YouTube Premium, and network coverage from Google Fi. There's no saying which device Google might bundle with the Pixel Pass. Further, its availability is also in the dark at the moment. The Pixel pass might be reserved for the countries that will get the Pixel 6 series. Google Pixel Pass surely sounds like a good subscription model for high-end smartphone companies to give their users a taste of what their hardware and software, along with other services, feel like for a very affordable cost. It is a model that is really good on paper and something that companies like Samsung can also offer. But only time will tell whether it is something that will prove to be a success for the search engine giant.

Indian Government Committed to Help Develop Telecom in Arunachal: MoS Posted: 11 Oct 2021 12:01 AM PDT The Indian government is totally committed to helping develop telecom in Arunachal Pradesh. The state is considered strategically important. The Union Minister of State (MoS) for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan, said that the central government is completely committed to developing telecommunications services in Arunachal Pradesh. According to an Arunachaltimes report, Chauhan has directed the senior officers of the state government to ensure that the Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) completes the installation of very-small-aperture-terminal (VSATs) within the timeline. North East States in India Face Homogenous Connectivity ChallengesChauhan is on a three-day visit to the state for reviewing the progress of the telecommunications sector. Chauhan said that connectivity is the most crucial need of the hour. Further, the MoS observed that the connectivity challenges faced by the northeastern states are homogenous in nature. Chauhan promised that the centre would be reviewing the requirements for the development of communication in Arunachal Pradesh for proper planning. Wangki Lowang, IT & Communication (IT&C) minister, thanked the government for approving the initiative to connect 980 villages with 1,683 4G mobile towers along with the approval for laying the optical fibre network in 600-gram panchayats under the BharatNet project. Improvement of connectivity services in the northeastern states of India will certainly go a long way in helping the economy of the country. The government has been very focused on helping the telecom sector because it understands the need for connectivity to keep the country running. During lockdowns, had there been no connectivity, citizens might have starved inside their homes for information and money. One of the major concerns for the government and telecom operators would be to connect rural India the same way as the urban cities. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) can take the upper hand and reach rural parts of the country faster than the private operators to ensure a strong 4G coverage.
OneWeb Partners With ISRO Commercial Arm to Launch Satellites in India Posted: 10 Oct 2021 11:29 PM PDT In a recent announcement, OneWeb said that it has partnered with the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) commercial arm NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). OneWeb will be using NSIL's Indian-built PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and the heavier GSLV-MkIII (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) as the platforms for launching all of its satellites in India in 2022. At the launch of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), the non-binding letter of intent was unveiled. For the unaware, OneWeb is one of the founding members of the ISpA. The ISpA wants to act as a body that becomes a central or collective voice for all the space and satellite companies in India. The industry body wants to work with all the stakeholders involved to help develop India's space ecosystem. OneWeb In Process to Build Initial Constellation of 648 LEO SatellitesBharti backed OneWeb is in process of building its initial constellation of 648 low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Out of the 648 satellites, the company has already sent 322 satellites into orbit. The satellite broadband company is expected to launch services in the UK, Canada, Alaska, and the Arctic. The company plans to enter the Indian market by 2022. This is the same time when companies such as SpaceX owned Starlink and Amazon's Project Juniper will try to enter the Indian market. The competition for providing the best satellite broadband services in India will be amongst these companies. In India, OneWeb will take the help of ISRO in launching its satellites to space for providing high-speed broadband connectivity. OneWeb wants to partner with the existing telecom operators in the country and help them expand their network coverage in the country. As per comments from the company, OneWeb is looking to primarily focus on the B2B segment when it comes to India rather than the B2C segment. However, its competitor, Starlink is looking to focus on the B2C segment.
Indian Telecom Industry to be Benchmarked With the World: Vaishnaw Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:35 PM PDT The telecom minister of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision is to benchmark the Indian Telecom industry with the rest of the world. In order to make this happen, the licensing norms and regulations must change in India. The telecom minister, in an interview with the Financial Express, confirmed that the government would be aiming to change the regulations in the sector and make them more of light-touch while being focused on the end-consumers, the common people, and also on the marginalised section of the society. India's Complex Licensing Regime to Change SoonWithout delving much into the details of things that are about to change, the telecom minister said that India has a complex licensing regime when it comes to the telecom sector, and that has been the same for decades now. Vaishnaw said that the government is looking to rationalise it. According to the telecom minister, the government will benchmark India's regulations with the norms in foreign countries because that is the vision of Modi. Vaishnaw has already confirmed that the government has already started working on the next set of reforms for the telecom sector. This new set of reforms will largely look to reduce the litigation involved in the sector. The telecom minister has said that within six months, the government should be ready with the next set of reforms for the telecom sector. The recent action from the government supports the statement from Vaishnaw. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) told the Supreme Court (SC) that it wants to reconsider its appeal on the ruling given by the telecom tribunal on the one-time spectrum charge (OTSC) issue. All of the bottlenecks that are being removed will help the telecom operators in investing much more comfortably in the upcoming 5G technology. Government support will really go a long way for the sector.
BSNL Asks TCS to Comply With EoI Conditions Posted: 10 Oct 2021 08:48 PM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has asked the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to comply with the expressions of interest (EoI) conditions. The state-run telecom operator has asked the Mumbai based TCS to deploy 40W carrier power equipment instead of 20W as mandated. TCS is likely going to be rewarded the 4G tender from BSNL. However, according to an ET Telecom report, TCS had deployed a 20W carrier power equipment. BSNL has also asked TCS to expedite the offering of the proof of concept (PoC) equipment so that the designated committee can go ahead with the testing. The state-run telco wants the consortium to finish the work on PoC equipment within the stipulated time. Telecom Minister Made First Call Over BSNL 4G Network Designed In IndiaYesterday, the telecom minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, made the first voice call over the homegrown 4G network of BSNL. The state-run telco said that Narendra Modi's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat is taking shape. This is a great development for the state-run telco. 4G is not going anywhere anytime soon, and BSNL has a part to play even if it launches homegrown 4G networks in 2022. India still has to see 'true 4G' and BSNL's addition in the competition might make things better for the market and the economy. BSNL's networks will be able to take that extra load off from the networks of Jio and Airtel, and it will result in less network congestion for the customers. BSNL 4G networks are already live in many parts of India, but none of them are made with homegrown equipment. BSNL might be able to offer much more secure networks than Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) because of the homegrown technology. This will be great for the telco as it will ensure that it also goes ahead with homegrown 5G. It will put BSNL in a great position to compete with the private operators.
Vodafone Idea Affordable 1GB Daily Data Plan Detailed Posted: 10 Oct 2021 06:37 PM PDT Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, offers multiple prepaid plans to users. These prepaid plans come with varied validities, benefits, and additional offers. It is easy to feel overwhelmed while deciding a good prepaid plan for yourself if there are a ton of plans at your disposal and all of them look decent. Today, we are detailing the 1GB daily data plan from Vi that is also affordable for you, and if this suits your needs, you won't have to look for multiple plans to decide which is the best for you. Let's take a look at the complete benefits and the price of the affordable 1GB daily data plan from Vi. Vodafone Idea 1GB Daily Data PlanThe plan that we are talking about comes for Rs 199. This sub-Rs 200 prepaid plan also comes with an additional over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Vi Movies & TV. However, note that it only carries a validity of 24 days. It would have been ideal if the plan had come with 28 days of validity, but this is a good plan for users who want to test how the telco's networks perform without overpaying and still getting enough data. Since the plan offers 1GB of daily data and carries a validity of 24 days, users will get a total of 24GB of data. This Vodafone Idea plan also comes with truly unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. The Vi Movies & TV Basic subscription offered to the users will let them enjoy live TV, news, movies and original shows. Now Vi also allows the users to access Vi Movies & TV directly through its mobile application. There are no other benefits offered with this plan. Mind that Vi also offers the same plan for 28 days. But with the 28 days plan, users have to pay Rs 20 more which makes the total price of the plan Rs 219. Further, if the users purchase the Rs 219 plan from the telco's official website or the mobile application, then Vodafone Idea will offer them 2GB of bonus data on successful completion of the recharge. The Rs 219 plan also comes with the benefit of unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. There is free access to the Vi Movies & TV Basic. Both the plans are good and are very competitive towards the 1GB daily data offerings from Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. The Rs 199 plan doesn't come with a web/app exclusive offer of 2GB bonus data. The Rs 219 plan is a better deal than the Rs 199 plan, to be honest.
