| Kerala Planning for 5G, Might Increase Mobile Towers for Better Experience Posted: 12 Oct 2021 07:44 AM PDT As 5G services are all set to be kickstarted in India in the near future, the number of mobile towers in Kerala will be doubled in less than two years. It is said that this will ensure an improved experience and 5G services to the users. As per a report by Mathrubhumi citing the information by DR RT Mathew, Senior Deputy Director of Telecom Department in a media conference. With the introduction of 5G services, it is estimated that the internet speed could be 10 times faster. Surge In Mobile Towers In KeralaGiven that the number of mobile towers in Kerala will increase two-folds by 2023, it is expected that there will be nearly 19,000 number towers. As per reports, the towers that are equipped to provide 5G services will be less, the increase in the same will let users experience their space a lot better. At the media conference, the executive stated that the department an initiative of the project called PM-WANI is expected to deliver seamless Wi-Fi services within a minimal cost. Likewise, the department of telecommunications is also planning to launch a self-KYC (self-Know Your Customer) project soon, wherein individuals can get a free SIM card directly from the convenience of their home. In the meantime, mobile communications reply on low-frequency and non-ionizing radiations and such radiations are not harmful to human beings. Also, the WHO (World Health Organisation) has stated that the electromagnetic radiation from mobile towers will not be harmful to human beings. It has stated these electromagnetic radiations from the towers can be assessed from the government portal. Those who want to raise requests to verify the functionality of their towers can mention it here. A few months back, the telecom operator Airtel deployed an additional 5 MHz spectrum in the 1800 MHz band and 10 MHz in 2300 band. | WhatsApp To Let Users Control Chat Backup Size Posted: 12 Oct 2021 06:20 AM PDT Reportedly, WhatsApp is working on a new feature, which lets users control and manage the size of their chat backups. It is touted to be one of the biggest problems faced by users and the solution was inflexible. Eventually, many users of the instant messaging platform had to forego their precious memories as they had to delete messages, photos and much more. Notably, this is the second feature related to backup that is likely under development by the instant messaging app. Recently, it was claimed that WhatsApp has started rolling out the beta testing of end-to-end chat encryption for cloud backups. It is yet to be rolled out to all users widely in the coming weeks. WhatsApp Chat Backup SizeWith the new feature that was spotted by the fansite tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform appears to be working on a new feature called "Manage backup size". This feature has been spotted in the Android beta version 2.21.21.7 and it is claimed to let users control the size of their chat backup that is uploaded to the cloud storage. If you are wondering how this feature will be of help, then you need to understand that WhatsApp backups are heavy and take a lot of space on cloud storage as there will be pictures, videos and other files that have several gigabytes worth of backup data. As per the screenshot shared by the report, a user should be able to exclude some categories of media from the chat backup such as audio, photos, documents, videos, and other media to reduce the size of the backup. It also speculated that one of the reasons for this new feature is the unlimited storage available on Google Drive for WhatsApp backups could be restricted in the future. This points to the recent limitation of free storage on Google Photos. However, it is not sure about the same as there is no communication regarding the same. Of late, WhatsApp has been working on several privacy-related features including the ability to hide several parts of the user profile from specific contacts and end-to-end encryption for backups in the cloud. It remains to be seen when the 'Manage backup size' feature will be rolled out on WhatsApp. |
DoT Can’t Encash BGs against Vi, Airtel for Now: TDSAT Posted: 12 Oct 2021 04:51 AM PDT In a recent development, the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to not encash any bank guarantees against the telecom operators Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel till the next hearing. These telcos are alleged to have denied points of interconnection to Reliance Jio in 2016, which impacted the quality of Jio's services. Both Vi and Airtel have moved the TDSAT against the telecom department's demand seeking penalties for the same. The move made by Vi and Airtel comes on the heels of DoT slapping them with cumulative penalties that are worth Rs 3,050 crore. This penalty was said to be paid within three weeks as they flouted licence conditions. The Airtel, Vi AccusationAs per ET Telecom, today, the TDSAT was hearing the pleas of both the telecom operators against the penalty that was imposed by DoT for denying the adequate points of interconnection to Jio in 2016. The next hearing of the case will be heard on October 26. Initially, the DoT had ordered them to pay the penalty within October 21. Both Airtel and Vi have protested against the hefty penalty they were imposed alleging that a breach would have been for a maximum of a couple of days but not over a month, as DoT and TRAI had recommended. However, DoT said that it takes instructions from relevant departments regarding the same. Back in 2016, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) imposed them to pay fines of Rs 1,050 crore each as Airtel and Vodafone India violated licence conditions resulting in poor quality of service and not granting sufficient points of interconnection in 21 circles each. On the other hand, Idea Cellular was fined Rs 950 crore for not correcting rules in 19 circles. For those who are unaware, points of interconnection are needed for voice calls to go through between networks. As per the accusation, Jio's network could not place calls to Airtel, Vodafone and Idea numbers. While the hearing was going on, Vodafone and Idea merged in 2018 and DoT accepted the recommendations of the regulator in 2019 but had not served the notices to date.
BSNL Looking to Upgrade 50000 Sites to 4G: Purwar Posted: 12 Oct 2021 03:02 AM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is looking to upgrade about 50,000 sites to 4G across the nation. This will be phase 1 of the state-run telco's 4G project. The remaining sites will be covered under phase 2. PK Purwar, CMD, BSNL told ET Telecom that the state-run telco had become an "operationally sustainable organisation". BSNL now has a market share of 10.25%, and its sole focus is 4G now. At the same time, BSNL's broadband business is growing at a rapid pace. The state-run telecom operator has been adding about 1 lakh new FTTH customers every month, which is a solid growth rate. Further, last year, BSNL had turned into an EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation) positive company. BSNL Trying to Overcome 4G Challenges: PurwarPurwar said that BSNL is currently trying to overcome 4G challenges. The telco is going ahead with the homegrown technology/equipment and has also tested it live in Chandigarh recently. All the state-run telco is waiting for is the vendors to complete the proof of concept (PoC) challenge. Once that is done, Purwar said that BSNL could roll out live 4G networks within six months or by the next financial year. Purwar mentioned that the spectrum is not a challenge for the company. As mentioned above, the first phase will focus on 50,000 sites across the nation. The second phase would focus on 40,000 sites. This means that the telco is planning to upgrade over 90,000 sites around India for 4G with the help of homegrown technology. BSNL has also sought the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) intervention for raising about Rs 38,000 crores. This is to help with the capex for rolling out 4G services and also so that some part of the debt can be serviced. So as Purwar said, if things go good for the telco, wishing six months, we might see live 4G networks of BSNL in many parts of the country.

Vodafone Idea Promoter Birla Might Infuse Capital in the Company Posted: 11 Oct 2021 09:24 PM PDT Vodafone Idea might get capital from its second-largest promoter, the Aditya Birla Group (ABG). The chairman of the group, Kumar Mangalam Birla, might infuse some of his own capital soon in the company. At the same time, the Vodafone Group Plc is not expected to infuse anything. But according to an ET Telecom report, the Vodafone Group might sell a part of its stake in the Indus Towers and then use the proceeds to help out Vodafone Idea. However, the amount is expected to be lesser than Rs 10,000 crore coming from the promoter. Vodafone Idea Promoters Need to Show IntentThe government has done its part in helping out Vodafone Idea. Now it is time for the promoters to show that they really believe in the company. If there's no capital infusion from the promoters, no outside investor would be keen on giving his/her money to the company. The relief package from the government has severely eased the cash flow problem of the telco. But now, the promoters need to ensure that such problems may never arrive. If the telco is able to get some funds from the promoters, it will further help with clearing a part of the debt, and also, the telco will be able to invest in its networks. It is worth noting that Vodafone Idea still hasn't been able to raise Rs 25,000 crores from the outside investors. The company's board had approved the fundraising last year. But nothing has happened so far. The telco has blamed the environment that pertained in the industry. A tariff hike might help the telco in boosting revenues and improving the cash flow situation. This might attract some new investors to the company. However, nothing more will happen until the promoters show that they believe in the company and invest some of their own money. Hopefully, for Vodafone Idea, that happens soon.
BSNL 4G: How It Will Help India Experience Faster Networks Posted: 11 Oct 2021 06:40 PM PDT Many people believe that 5G networks will take over India in a year or two. Almost all of them fail to understand that the relevant use cases of 5G for normal consumers are far too few at the moment. Whether mobile speeds are 200 Mbps or 100 Mbps, it won't make a lot of difference for a lot of consumers. Thus, while 5G is exciting, it is not of much use for an average user if he/she is connected to a strong 4G network. Here is where Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will come with its 4G networks and make an impact. BSNL 4G Networks Could Result In Less CongestionWhen it comes to normal consumers, the telcos will focus on providing excellent 4G coverage for at least the next five to six years. All of the next four to five years will be gone for the telcos in improving their 4G networks and coverage. With true 4G, Indians might experience internet download speeds of up to 50 to 60 Mbps very easily at all times. At present, the 4G services are offered by only three operators in the country – Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and Bharti Airtel. Due to a fewer number of operators and hundreds of millions of 4G mobile consumers, the 4G networks of the three private operators get congested. This happens way too frequently for some consumers. The reason is limited spectrum holdings and also the limited capacity to invest in the networks. BSNL can change the game here, though. The state-run telco can offer a strong 4G coverage throughout the country. The state-run telco might not offer the fastest network experience, but what it can ensure is PAN-India coverage. This will be enough for a lot of consumers to latch on to the telco's networks because of its affordable plans. This will put the private operators in a fix as well. They will finally be threatened by what BSNL is doing. Further, the fact that BSNL will be rolling out 4G networks built with the help of indigenous or homegrown equipment, it will also give the state-run telco a chance to upgrade to 5G with the help of homegrown equipment. For now, it looks like the 4G tender from BSNL will go to the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). While many people believe that BSNL is wasting taxpayers money, there is a strong reason to believe that it can take off the demand load from the 4G networks of the private operators. The private operators don't provide 4G coverage in every part of the country because it is not economically feasible or profitable for them. But BSNL looks at the business in a little different way. Since it is a state-run telecom company, it wants the citizens of the country, regardless of wherever they are, to keep getting network coverage whether it is profitable for the company or not. Just like BSNL has a bigger network of fixed broadband in India, it can easily make a bigger network of 4G when compared to the private operators. While BSNL is a few years late, it can still make an impact. The telco has a national brand and recognition, all it needs is a PAN-India 4G coverage, a clever marketing team with some humour, and it can turn things around very easily.
