For Telecom Operators Q2 Likely to Be a Healthy Quarter: Brokerage Firms

Posted: 20 Oct 2021 12:18 PM PDT

Telcos The second quarter of this financial year (July-September) is likely to be a healthy quarter for the telecom companies, though the drivers would not be the same for all the operators. Reliance Jio Infocomm's performance would be driven by subscriber additions, while Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) would benefit from normalisation post the lockdown and tariff hikes, according to a report by IIFL Securities. "We expect 5% and 4% quarter-on-quarter EBITDA growth for RJio and Bharti Airtel on a consolidated basis, while VIL and Indus are likely to see flat EBITDA. With the relief package reducing the urgency around tariff hikes, we now build-in significant price increases only in the second half of 2022 versus the early-2022 previously," IIFL Securities said in its October 12 note. The urgency around the tariffs has come down with VIL's near-term cash outflow significantly reduced. Though Bharti Airtel's chairman recently talked about ARPU trending towards Rs 200 in FY22, he also added that it would not happen at the expense of competitiveness.

Higher User Churn, ARPU Recovery

According to Credit Suisse, a higher subscriber churn and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) recovery for telecom firms, while tenancy renewals negotiations for Indus Towers will be a key focus. "We expect the second quarter of FY22 to witness higher subscriber churn and 4.5-6% sequential ARPU growth for Airtel and VIL on actions on the minimum recharge plans and some recovery after the impact from the second wave of COVID-19 in Q1 FY22," it said in a research note. The brokerage firm expects Airtel's revenue market share gains to continue in 2Q FY22; subscriber churn will likely increase in the quarter due to the negative impact from the raising of the minimum recharge plan in the second half of July 2021. Credit Suisse expects VIL's ARPU to grow 6% on a QoQ basis, given the churn of lower ARPU subs and uplift from an increase in minimum recharge plans, and estimate revenue growth of 1.6% QoQ (-13.8% YoY).

Momentum in Cellular Business

According to BofA Securities, cellular business momentum is expected to be steady for all telcos and expects RJio and VIL to show a 5% and 2% QoQ improvement in revenues. "We expect EBITDA margins for RJio to be stable QoQ and slightly decline for VIL on the back of higher marketing and personnel costs. We expect a stable quarter for Indus Towers with +0.3% and 0.2% QoQ change in revenue and EBITDA," BofA Securities added.

User Addition to be Mixed

According to a report by ICICI Direct Research, a mixed performance is likely. "We expect the subscriber addition trend to be mixed for the industry, with industry leader RJio is likely to lead subscriber addition with about 15 million net adds in Q2. On the other hand, VIL is expected to continue experiencing churn, also impacted by last quarter's tariff hike for 2G customers, which in our view, will drive consolidation," ICICI Direct Research said in a research report. For VIL, ICICI Direct Research expects subscriber loss of about 6 million. For RJio, reported ARPU is likely to be up 1% QoQ at about Rs 140, while revenues are expected to see 4.1% QoQ growth at Rs 18,734 crore. For Vodafone Idea, with ARPU growth of about 6% QoQ at Rs 110, the brokerage firm expects overall revenues to grow 2.1% QoQ at Rs 9,347 crore.

BSNL, Jio, Airtel and Excitel Common Speed Broadband Plans

Posted: 20 Oct 2021 08:05 AM PDT

Broadband In the last few months, the demand for the 100 Mbps Broadband plan has been escalating. Internet service providers such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Reliance Jio, Airtel and Excitel have come up with plans offering 100 Mbps which may not vary too much in terms of their benefits but are not completely identical either. Today we have a list of four broadband plans which are being offered by these companies and the benefits that the users will reap out of it.

BSNL Fibre Value Broadband Plan

This plan from the BSNL offers speed up to 100 Mbps till 3300GB. Beyond 3300GB, the speed drops to 2 Mbps. This plan costs Rs 799 per month. There is an unlimited voice calling benefit offered with this plan.

Reliance Jio Broadband Plan

Reliance Jio offers 100 Mbps of speed for both uploading and downloading. This pack offers unlimited data (3.3TB) to its users. There is also an unlimited voice-calling benefit applicable to it. This plan is valid for 30 days and costs Rs 699 (not including GST). However, there are no other benefits to this particular offering.

Airtel Xstream Fiber Broadband Plan

This pack offered by Airtel has multiple benefits. The users who avail of this plan have unlimited access to Wynk Music, Shaw Academy for 1 year and FASTag. It also offers up to 100 Mbps of speed. There is unlimited data (3.3TB) so one can stream and download all he wants without worrying about data exhaustion. It is valid for 30 days.

Excitel Broadband Plan

Excitel is offering a 100 Mbps speed plan for Rs 699 (exclusive of taxes). The company does not charge for the installation of the Fiber connection. This plan offers unlimited data to the users and has a validity of 30 days. Among these plans, only the Airtel plan comes with the add-on benefits of a few applications.

Vodafone Idea, BSNL Disappoint Again in August 2021

Posted: 20 Oct 2021 07:05 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea The two struggling telecom operators in India, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have disappointed yet again in August 2021. As per the monthly performance report shared by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Vodafone Idea lost close to a million subscribers (833,549 subscribers) in August. At the same time, the state-run telco lost around 60,439 subscribers. Vodafone Idea losing a ton of subscribers in a single month is not at all surprising. Many analysts believe that the telco's subscriber churn rate will be higher because it had removed the base plan of Rs 49 and the low paying users were forced to opt for the Rs 79 plan at least.

Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Added New Users

Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio added new subscribers during the same month. Reliance Jio added 649,754 subscribers while Bharti Airtel added 138,132 subscribers. As per the TRAI data, both the telcos had close to a similar number of active users. Bharti Airtel's 97.92% of the subscriber base was active while Reliance Jio's active subscriber base stood at 79% of the total subscribers which is a huge difference. Airtel had a total of 346.84 million active subscribers in August 2021 while Jio had 350.63 million active subscribers. In comparison, Vodafone Idea's 87.24% of the total subscriber base was active while BSNL's 49.99% of the total subscriber base was active. For Vodafone Idea, the active subscriber base stood at 236.49 million users in August and for BSNL the total active subscriber base was 57.15 million users. Reliance Jio still has a long way to go when it comes to active subscribers. Airtel can potentially garner a larger revenue market share in the medium term if it can covert its legacy network users into 4G users. Jio's plus point is that it only has 4G subscribers. With more 4G subscribers, Bharti Airtel will be able to boost its average revenue per user (ARPU).

Vodafone Idea Has Accepted Four Year Payment Moratorium Option

Posted: 20 Oct 2021 03:45 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) has told the government that it will be opting for the four-year payment moratorium benefit on the dues. With this, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has become the first telecom operator in the country to accept the moratorium benefit from the government. According to an ET Telecom report, the cash strapped telco has further asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) about when it will receive the bank guarantees back from the banks.

Four Year Moratorium on Payments Will Ease Cashflow Problems for the Company

Because of a ton of debt, dues and capex on its shoulders, Vodafone Idea wasn't in the best position to make new investments for 5G. A negative cash flow, especially at a time when the company was losing subscribers, it was being speculated that Vodafone Idea might go out of business soon. But that is not going to happen anymore. The government has ensured that the stress of statutory payments is lifted off from the telecom sector. Vodafone Idea also has the option of converting the accrued internet dues into equity for the government. The telco is yet to comment on whether it is looking to do it or not. With the bank guarantees (BGs) not being a threat anymore, Vodafone Idea's cash flow position is going to improve dramatically. The telco will be able to make more investments for developing 5G technology and improve network coverage. Vodafone Idea is also looking to raise up to Rs 25,000 crores from outside investors. The telco is also expected to get money from its promoters in the near future. Promoters infusing capital further into the company will definitely improve Vi's image. This will attract more outside investors. The telecom operators are further expected to go for tariff hikes soon and that will also help Vodafone Idea. The government is also working on a relief measure that will help with reducing litigation in the sector.

BSNL Will Deliver Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Mobile Broadband Service in India

Posted: 20 Oct 2021 02:15 AM PDT

BSNL Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has received the necessary licenses for delivering Inmarsat's Global Xpress mobile broadband services in India. As per the Inflight and Maritime Connectivity (IFMC) license provided by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the Global Xpress (GX) will be available to Indian customers across aviation, maritime, and the government. BSNL might become yet another operator to provide in-flight connectivity in India.

Indian Airlines Will be Able to Deploy GX for In-Flight Connectivity

After receiving the necessary approvals and licenses from the government, BSNL will be able to provide the Indian airlines with the GX technology so that the airlines can deploy it for providing in-flight connectivity. But all of it won't happen in one go since the company will be looking at the phased introduction of services for partners and customers. Rajeev Suri, CEO, Inmarsat, said the company will now be able to deliver the world's only global high-speed mobile broadband Ka-band network available to the businesses and the government in India with the help of its partner BSNL. Suri said that this partnership would also add to the economic growth of India. GX is a market-leading service that is able to deliver high bandwidth with the necessary level of security that government-grade mobility customers require. The GX technology is continuously evolving, and it will be able to handle an even higher capacity in the future. As per a release from the company, Inmarsat is further launching seven GX satellites which include the next generation GX satellites over the next three years. Each of the satellites will help with adding more capacity into a single region. The GX gateway for India is located in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet Ltd, said the company looks forward to offering groundbreaking connectivity service to its passengers later this year. The airline will introduce it with its Boeing 737 Max aircraft.

JioPhone Next Specs Leak, Snapdragon 215 SoC, 2GB RAM and More

Posted: 19 Oct 2021 11:34 PM PDT

JioPhone Next A few specifications of JioPhone Next have leaked. The much-awaited affordable 4G smartphone from the telco has been found listed on the Google Play Console. From the listing, multiple specifications of the smartphone can be looked at. The JioPhone Next launch was earlier delayed due to unknown reasons. The smartphone was slated to launch on September 10, 2021. However, just a night before the launch date, the smartphone's release was pushed ahead to the festive season which is Diwali. This means that in just a few weeks, we might have the JioPhone Next in our hands.

JioPhone Next Tipped Specifications

According to the tweet from a popular tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd), the JioPhone Next is said to come with an HD+ display with resolution support of 720×1440 pixels. The device is expected to run on Android 11 (Go Edition) out of the box. Further, the listing reveals that the smartphone might come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 SoC coupled with up to 2GB of RAM. The Google Play Console listing shows that the smartphone will come with thick bezels on the left and right side. Further, users might see a massive chin and a forehead at the front. This would not make the device look beautiful at all. As per previous leaks, the smartphone may be priced around $50 or Rs 3,499. As I have said before, Jio needs to ensure that its partnership with Google brings good results in terms of software optimisation. If the JioPhone Next fails to deliver a good user experience, it might not be worth it. Users can rather save up and go for an entry-level smartphone if the JioPhone Next doesn't deliver on the promises it has made. The pricing and the recharge plans that will accompany the smartphone will play a major role in deciding its success or failure. The exact date of the smartphone's launch is not yet announced.

Reliance Jio, Airtel Would Focus on 2G Subscribers for ARPU Growth

Posted: 19 Oct 2021 10:48 PM PDT

Reliance Jio, Airtel It is not just the tariff hike that is going to make a difference for the top two telecom operators in India. Both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel would want to make use of the opportunity to attract 2G subscribers for converting to 4G since that would help the telcos with increasing their average revenue per user (ARPU). Currently, there are over 300 million 2G subscribers in India. If these subscribers convert into 4G users, that would significantly help the telcos with their ARPU and also overall revenues. It would also enable them to better capitalise on the 5G networks in the future.

Here's How Jio and Airtel Plan to Convert 2G Subscribers to 4G Users

One of the biggest problems that can be identified for the 2G subscribers for converting into 4G users is the absence of an ultra-low-cost 4G smartphone. There are affordable 4G devices present in the market, but they are not good enough. Further, most people don't even want a 4G feature phone like the JioPhone. That is why these 300 million-odd 2G subscribers still exist in India. Reliance Jio will solve this issue by launching the JioPhone Next in a matter of weeks now. It is expected to be a super affordable 4G smartphone that might be available in the market with subsidies. At the same time, Bharti Airtel has partnered with multiple smartphone brands and will be giving cashbacks worth up to Rs 6,000 to the users if they meet the terms and conditions of the offer. Both the telcos are trying very hard to convert 2G subscribers into 4G users. But this is not alone going to push the legacy network subscribers to 4G services. One reason why 2G subscribers might not be moving to 4G services could be because they simply don't see any need for it for them. These subscribers could be old people who use a feature phone for just incoming calls mostly and have talktime recharges.

Facebook Might Not be Called Facebook Anymore

Posted: 19 Oct 2021 09:38 PM PDT

Facebook Facebook, one of the biggest social media companies in the world might soon undergo a rebranding activity. According to a report from The Verge, the company might not be called Facebook anymore. There's no saying on what the new name might be. Facebook denied commenting on the same saying that it doesn't pay attention to the "rumours or speculation". It won't be a surprising thing to see Facebook's name being changed. It might hurt a lot of fans of the company, but it will make sense to many. For the last few years as the presence of social media has grown, Facebook has come under a lot of scrutiny by governments across the world. Especially the United States (U.S.) government has been unhappy with how Facebook works.

Facebook Might Create a Holding Company

It is not unprecedented for tech companies in Silicon Valley to change their names. For example, Google created a holding company called 'Alphabet Inc' so that it can also expand its business into other areas. Facebook's holding company will also have a lot to undertake which includes Facebook's application and platform, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more. Facebook has plans of creating a metaverse which is a virtual environment where people can connect with each other with the help of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) products. The Verge report added that the new name of the company might be announced as early as the next week. This would be a surprise for many fans of the company. However, it could be a very positive thing for the company's future and also help it in doing things easily that it plans to do in the next few years. It will be worth looking at whether the report from The Verge is actually correct and Facebook is coming out with a new name or not. It should all clear out in the next week or so.

Airtel, OneWeb Partnership Very Much in the Books

Posted: 19 Oct 2021 08:53 PM PDT

Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel is definitely going to be one of the companies that is going to benefit from the arrival of the satellite broadband company, OneWeb. For the unaware, Bharti has a sizeable stake in OneWeb. Thus it won't be a surprise for many when both Airtel and OneWeb announce that they are partnering to help enhance connectivity services in India. OneWeb's plan is clear for every country that it enters. The satcom company wants to partner with the telecom operators to help them in expanding the reach of their network. It would be a no brainer for both companies to partner because both are owned by the Bharti group.

Airtel Would Be Able to Give Tough Competition to Jio in Coverage Area

When it comes to providing the best coverage in India, Reliance Jio is always ahead of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi). But with the help of OneWeb, Bharti Airtel would be able to reach areas where Jio can't even think of going. Airtel could potentially become the telecom operator with the best network coverage in the entire nation. OneWeb and Airtel partnership will help the companies in more than one way. Airtel would also be able to leverage OneWeb's help with 5G. This partnership will be exciting for everyone involved because this would be the first time that a telecom operator would be working with a satcom company to provide network services. OneWeb's competitors can potentially partner up with the other telecom operators. But nothing of that sort has surfaced in the industry yet nor is any other satcom company doing such a thing in the foreign lands. But it won't be unprecedented if say a company like Starlink partners up with Reliance Jio or Vodafone Idea to help them compete with Bharti Airtel which would partner with OneWeb. It will be interesting to see whether OneWeb would also be ready to help Airtel's competitors including Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi).

Hathway Might Have a Better 200 Mbps Broadband Plan Than BSNL

Posted: 19 Oct 2021 06:33 PM PDT

Hathway Broadband Hathway and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are two recognised broadband internet service providers in India. Both the companies are present in multiple regions of the country and provide fiber internet plans. BSNL is easily a bigger company than Hathway, but there's a plan from Hathway that might beat the same plan from the state-run telecom operator. The offering that we are talking about is the 200 Mbps plan. Hathway and BSNL both provide users with a 200 Mbps broadband plan. Today, we will compare the same plan from both companies and see which one is better.

BSNL 200 Mbps Broadband Plan

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) offers its 200 Mbps broadband plan for Rs 999 per month. The state-run telco also offers an over-the-top (OTT) benefit with this plan. Users get 3.3TB of monthly data and a free landline connection with unlimited voice calling benefit. The download and upload speeds offered by this plan are uniform. The OTT benefit provided to the users is of Disney+ Hotstar Premium that costs Rs 1,499 per year. There's nothing more to this plan.

Hathway 200 Mbps Broadband Plan

Hathway has varied offerings for people living in different regions of the country. If you are living in Bengaluru, Hathway has an excellent 200 Mbps internet plan for you. The only thing is, this plan is not available for a single month subscription. Users need to purchase it at least for a minimum of 2 months, for which they will be charged Rs 1,858. This is without taxes, of course. If you want a modem from the company, charges for the same might be applicable. Hathway provides users with unlimited data. The speed delivered to the users is uniform in both downloading and uploading aspects. Users can purchase this plan for 3, 6, and 12 months as well. However, there are not much savings even when the users go for long-term plans. The thing is, in one regard, Hathway's 200 Mbps broadband plan is better than BSNL's offering, and that is the amount of data offered. Hathway promises unlimited data, while BSNL caps the internet speed after the user has consumed 3.3TB monthly data. In terms of cost, both the plans are almost the same. A majority of the consumers might feel like 3.3TB of FUP data from BSNL would be enough for them. BSNL also offers a major OTT benefit which, for some reason, Hathway doesn't. Almost every internet service provider (ISP) offers an OTT benefit to the consumers with its high-end plans, and thus it is disappointing that Hathway doesn't
