Posted: 21 Oct 2021 01:04 PM PDT

5G Trials in India India will be one of the most crucial nations when it comes to the development of the next-generation connectivity standard, 5G. With 5G, multiple new use cases of the network technology are going to emerge, and India is currently conducting field trials to develop relevant use cases. Pekka Lundmark, Chief Executive Offer (CEO) and President, Nokia, at the ET Global Townhall Thursday, said India has a critical role to play in the new era of connectivity.

Trials for 5G Applications in India Look Promising

According to an ET Telecom report, Lundmark said many promising 5G trials are taking place in India. 5G is currently being tested amongst many verticals in India, including rural connectivity, affordable healthcare, and smart cities. Nokia has been helping the Indian telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, with conduction their 5G trials. Not only in India, but Nokia has experience of working with telecom operators around the world and has already helped global operators launch their 5G networks. It is worth noting that Nokia employs the most number of people in India as compared to other countries across the globe. As per the Finnish telecom gear maker, India plays an impressive role in the development and design of telecom products. Nokia is going to get a larger piece of business than it would have normally got if Huawei and ZTE weren't ousted from India's 5G. Lundmark said that Nokia is in support of India's vision of creating resilient and secure technologies. More importantly, Lundmark said that Nokia wants to build a business with trust and integrity in the country. For the unaware, Nokia is one of the companies which will be a part of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the telecom sector. The telecom PLI scheme has an outlay of Rs 12,195 crores for the companies that will be a part of it.

He stated that they would collaborate and work with German automakers in Europe. Also, the new American factory will help them serve the South American market with increased chances for the factory to be located in Mexico, which is a crucial hub for the automotive supply chains and a significant manufacturing base for Foxconn. Currently, the company is increasing its efforts to step into the EV market segment by acquiring a manufacturing plant from Ohio-based Lordstown Motors. This plant will be used to produce full-size pickup trucks for America from April next year. Also, the company is building a production facility for electric vehicles in Thailand and is working with PTT, the state-backed oil and gas company. Vodafone Idea With 5G, telecom operators would be looking to bank on enterprises revenues more than ever. Vodafone Idea (Vi) recently announced that it has partnered up with Athonet to test 5G networks for Industry 4.0 solutions. Vi and Athonet have partnered up to test enterprises use cases of 5G, which include testing the potential of networks in smart warehouses, smart construction, smart workplace, and smart agriculture.

Vodafone Idea, Athonet Partnership Will Validate Multiple Enterprise Use Cases of 5G

The partnership between both companies will result in the validation of multiple enterprise use cases of 5G. The trial results will help in demonstrating critical monitoring and control applications in primary product industries such as warehouses, factories, and Railways. Validation Industry, 4.0 use cases, is something that the other telecom operators will be looking to do as well. 5G will open up a new world of B2B revenues for the telecom operators. The operators will be able to deliver private networks, slicing networks for relevant use cases, and more. Gianluca Verin, CEO, Athonet, said this partnership with Vodafone Idea will help in demonstrating the benefits and real use cases of 5G-SA (standalone architecture). Vodafone Idea already offers enterprise services, and with the power of 5G networks behind it, the telco can map out a new winning strategy for itself. 5G networks are going to be in huge demand by businesses and enterprises around the country. With its trials and testing, Vodafone Idea will be able to ensure that it is ready for the market demand of 5G networks backed enterprise services. Oppo Might Pull Off an Apple, Google Move

Posted: 21 Oct 2021 12:32 AM PDT

Oppo Oppo is a global smartphone brand with a presence in huge markets such as Australia, the UK, the USA, India, China, and more. Because of the chipset shortage, smartphone vendors had to face rising manufacturing costs as system-on-chipsets (SoCs) became expensive. At the same time, relying on Qualcomm or MediaTek pushes the smartphone vendors to create a device that is complimentary to the chipset rather than the other way around. But Apple (with Bionic chipsets) and Google (with Tensor chipsets) won't have to worry about all this. Apple and Google can majorly control the manufacturing of their chipsets and also design them in a way that complements their hardware. According to a new report from Nikkei Asia, Oppo might be looking to do the same. Oppo might be looking to develop its own chipsets.

Oppo Won't be Fabricating Own Chips

According to the report, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer isn't looking to fabricate its own chips, though. Oppo might go ahead with TSMCs 3nm technology and then design custom cores that will aid with on-device ML, photography, and security. This will allow Oppo to reduce its dependence on companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. Oppo is expected to come out with a new smartphone donning its own chipset as early as 2023 or 2024. This won't make Qualcomm very happy. It is likely that with Oppo going this way, OnePlus and Realme will do the same. Nothing's confirmed yet, and no official statement from Oppo has come yet. However, this might become the trend for powerful smartphone companies in the near future. Companies that have the fan following and the money/resources for developing their own chipset will be looking to do so. This will give them better control over their smartphones and also allow them to bring more powerful and optimised devices to the table. It will be interesting if the report from Nikkei Asia is indeed true.

BSNL, Vodafone Idea Customers Are Porting Out Fast

Posted: 20 Oct 2021 11:09 PM PDT

BSNL, VodafoneIdea According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) monthly report for August 2021, it is evident that Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) customers are porting out to the networks of Airtel and Jio. A total of 11.28 million mobile number portability (MNP) requests were made in August 2021. Out of the 11.28 million MNP requests across India, 6.49 million requests came from Zone-1 while 4.79 million requests came from Zone-2. This has taken the cumulative MNP requests in India from 616.87 million at the end of July 2021 to 628.15 million at the end of August 2021. As per TRAI data, in Zone-1, the highest number of MNP requests to date have been made in Maharashtra (51.76 million) followed by Rajasthan (45.53 million). In comparison, in Zone-2, the highest number of MNP requests to date have been made in Karnataka (50.13 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh (48.23 million).

Vodafone Idea, BSNL Lost Subscribers

While Jio and Airtel customers might have ported out as well, it is clearly visible that Vodafone Idea and BSNL customers are porting out in larger numbers. Vodafone Idea lost 8,33,549 subscribers while BSNL lost 60,439 subscribers. Neither of the telcos has added new customers in a while. While the exact numbers are not mentioned, it isn't hard to understand that Vodafone Idea customers are porting out to the networks of Airtel and Jio in a bunch. Possible reasons for this could be the network superiority that Airtel and Jio promise. Vi scores much lesser points than Airtel and Jio when it comes to network coverage. The cash-strapped telco has been unable to expand aggressively because of very limited cash-in-hand. However, with the payment moratorium of four years, tariff hikes in the future, and additional capital from promoters and outside investors, Vi can turn things around pretty fast. It will be interesting to see when can Vi again start adding new subscribers.
