TRAI Questions if LCO Should be Shared Infra for Broadband Services Posted: 25 Oct 2021 07:45 AM PDT The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper to understand the market structure and competition in cable television (TV) services. Initially, through a letter dated December 12, 2021, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) had sought recommendations of TRAI on the issues related to the monopoly/market dominance in cable TV services. In response to the letter, TRAI had come out with recommendations on market and monopoly dominance in cable TV services on November 3, 2013. But since a lot of time has passed now and the market has evolved, the MIB had asked the regulator through a letter dated February 19, 2021, to come out with a fresh set of recommendations on the same matter. Accordingly, TRAI has issued a fresh consultation paper on market structure/competition in cable TV services. The regulator has invited written comments from the stakeholders by November 22, 2021. Any counter comments can be submitted by December 6, 2021. TRAI Seeks Views on Whether There is Sufficient CompetitionThrough the consultation paper, TRAI has questioned whether there is enough competition in the television distribution sector given that there are multiple options available for the users to consume content from. Further, the TRAI has asked whether there is a need to regulate the issue of monopoly/oligopoly/market dominance in cable TV services. If there is a need, TRAI has asked what measures should be taken to address the impending issues related to the market monopoly or market dominance in the cable TV sector. Further, the regulator has sought views of the stakeholders on whether there is a barrier of entry in the Indian cable television sector. TRAI has also raised a very important question. The regulator has asked what should be the norms of sharing infrastructure at the level of LCO (local cable operator) for enabling broadband services through the cable television infrastructure for last-mile access. TRAI wants to understand whether it would give an LCO an undue advantage over the market share of broadband in its area of operation. There are more questions in the consultation floated by TRAI; you can check them out by going to the company's website.
Apple MacBook Air Renders Leak Suggests a Slim Profile Posted: 25 Oct 2021 06:49 AM PDT The next-generation Apple MacBook Air is likely to be unveiled sometime in early 2022. While we are months away from the launch of this upcoming laptop, a new set of renders of the device have been leaked online. These new renders give us a glimpse of what we can expect from the Apple MacBook Air in terms of looks and design. Notably, these renders have been shared by Jon Prosser and Ian Zelbo. Apple MacBook Air Renders RevealedGoing by the leaked renders, the Apple MacBook Air model that we are talking about appears to flaunt an extremely thin design, especially for the display frame. From these renders, it looks like the upcoming affordable laptop could flaunt the new notched display design that we have already seen on the MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 models launched recently. The leaked renders of the Apple MacBook Air model show that the company will adopt white bezels for the device. Notably, the company has not used this color option since the 2010s models that adopted a polycarbonate build. Despite featuring narrow bezels at the sides, the chin seems to be noticeable in these renders. Both the tipsters added that there will be MagSafe 3 support, dual Thunderbolt 4 and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the Apple MacBook Air slated for 2022 release. The leaked design showcases the almost impossibly thin profile of the Apple MacBook Air that looks barely wide enough for an audio jack. So, until there is an official confirmation, we cannot confirm this design. Also, we can expect the laptop to not feature a full-sized keyboard. The tipster Zelbo claims to have seen a prototype model and adds that the renders are based on it. Under the hood, the new MacBook Air is tipped to feature the Apple M2 chipset and is likely to arrive in multiple colour variants. Having said that the Apple MacBook Air is all set to be launched in early 2022, we need to wait for further details to be hinted by rumours and speculations. Until then we need to wait for further details via leaks and reports, thereby letting us know what we can expect from the laptop.

5G in India Might Not Arrive Until October 2022 Posted: 25 Oct 2021 05:03 AM PDT Everyone is waiting to see live 5G networks in India. The telecom operators are currently in the testing phase of the 5G equipment and networks in different parts of the country. A few months back, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had given the private telcos’ spectrum in the 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz bands for conducting 5G trials. The operators were supposed to finish the trials within six months, which should have ideally concluded in November 2021. But now, as per a CNBC -Awaaz, the telcos are looking to get a one-year extension from the DoT for finishing 5G trials. Indian Telecom Operators Haven't Tested 5G Much in Rural IndiaThe companies, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Reliance Jio, are looking for additional time from the DoT to conduct and conclude 5G trials. Because the operators haven't tested 5G much in the rural parts of the country, they want more time to conduct the trials. CNBC-Awaaz said, citing an unnamed source, that the DoT might give the telecom operators extra time for testing 5G. The telecom department could extend the trials until March 2022. This means that even the 5G spectrum auctions will be delayed and might only happen in the first quarter of FY23. It is worth noting that Bharti Airtel was the first private telecom operator in the country to test 5G in rural India. Airtel had partnered with Ericsson to conduct the trials. Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea are also aggressively testing their 5G networks. Vi has already formed partnerships with multiple companies to test 5G for enterprises and smart city solutions. Reliance Jio, on the other hand, is conducting the biggest 5G trial in Mumbai, India. In fact, Jio has developed its own 5G stack for both radio (5G NR) and core network (5G CN), which is compliant with the latest standards. Considering all this, it may take much more time for the operators to roll out 5G networks, and India might see 5G by October 2022 only.

Reliance Jio ARPU Growth Underwhelming: ICICI Securities Posted: 25 Oct 2021 01:22 AM PDT The September quarter and half-yearly performance results of Reliance Jio were recently announced by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). The telco reported an average revenue per user (ARPU) growth of 3.7% to Rs 143.6 in Q2 FY22. ICICI Securities has termed the growth as underwhelming. The analyst noted that Jio has cleaned up some of its inactive subscriber base, which has led to the growth of ARPU. It is worth noting that Jio's subscriber base declined by 11.1 million users in the September 2021 quarter. This is the first time the company has lost subscribers in a quarter since its launch. Jio ARPU Growth Underwhelming Despite Numerous Factors in FavourICICI Securities said that considering that there was one additional day in the quarter, the ARPU growth of the telco is underwhelming. Further, the company's FTTH and enterprise revenues have remained steady. The analyst has cut its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) estimate by 5.6% for Jio in FY22. However, for FY23, ICICI Securities believe that Jio's EBITDA will be higher because of the launch of JioPhone Next in the country. Jio's EBITDA has dipped by 35% YoY to Rs 3 billion. This could be due to the increased investments that the company has made in its networks, and the lower ARPU hasn't helped much either. The telco's net debt has risen to Rs 697 billion against Rs 290 billion in FY21. The net debt has risen because of the deferred spectrum liability that has been recognised in H1 FY22 for the spectrum bought in March 2021 auctions. ICICI Securities has said that Jio's subscriber base should increase further in FY23 due to the benefit of JioPhone Next. Further, the ARPU assumption of the analyst for the year FY22 has been cut, but the future ARPU has been maintained because of the possible tariff hike. Reliance Jio is expected to launch the JioPhone Next in the festive season of Diwali 2021, which is not far away now.
Bharti Airtel Opts for AGR, Spectrum Payment Moratorium, Might Save Rs 40,000 Crore Posted: 24 Oct 2021 11:33 PM PDT Bharti Airtel has opted for the four-year spectrum and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) payment moratorium benefit given by the government. According to an ET Telecom report, the second-largest telecom operator in the country stands to save up to Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 crore from this move. A few days back, Vodafone Idea (Vi) had opted for the payments moratorium benefit as well. Vi also stands to save up to Rs 60,000 crore from the said move. Bharti Airtel Yet to Decide on Equity Conversion OptionThe telecom operators were also given the option of converting the accrued interest on dues into equity for the government. However, Airtel has not reverted about the same to the government yet. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had recently communicated to the operators that they had to decide whether they want to opt for the payment moratorium by October 29, 2021. With the bank guarantees (BGs) sharply reduced and the DoT working on measures to reduce litigation in the sector, all the private operators will be able to save a lot of their money. Bharti Airtel wasn't cashflow negative like Vodafone Idea (Vi), but the telco will definitely appreciate the benefit offered by the government. All the extra cash saved can be put to better use such as the development of new technologies for 5G. Airtel recharge plans are also going to get more expensive after the tariff hikes kick in. This will further allow the telco to maximise its revenues and profits. Neither Vi nor Airtel has said anything about the equity conversion yet and the telcos will strongly think about it before communicating anything with the government. Vi can choose the equity conversion option as it will cement its position as a going concern in the market. Bharti Airtel might not go the equity route because it can pay for the interest accrued.
India Can Still Lead in the 5G Era Posted: 24 Oct 2021 10:11 PM PDT Mukesh Ambani, MD and Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), amongst many others, have time and again said that India should lead the fifth revolution that combines both humans and machines in the workplace. To do this, India needs to be ahead of other nations in 5G. Being ahead doesn't only mean rolling out new technologies faster. Instead, it is all about rolling out technologies that are better, feasible in cost, and are homegrown. This is the only way India can go ahead with being the number one nation when it comes to 5G. Developing Homegrown Tech Will Change the GameDeveloping homegrown 5G tech will ensure that India not only consumes but also sells (in other words – exports). This will help India become an even powerful economy with much less dependability on other nations. Many experts have said that deployed roll out of 5G in India will help the telecom operators. This is because even if 5G networks had been live right now, it wouldn't have made a big difference for the telcos because only a minority of the population has 5G smartphones. Further, the use cases of 5G networks mostly give a message that the next-gen connectivity technology will benefit enterprises more than the consumers. The right way for India to go from here is to focus more on indigenous technology. This helps the country in becoming self-reliable and also puts it on the map for other nations to purchase equipment/technology from. I am not saying India should go with the 5Gi standard because then that would mean the technology developed here would be rendered useless for the other countries following the 5G standard developed by 3GPP. 5G spectrum auctions are still quite far. Homegrown technology is something that the telcos are focusing on. We might not see a single live 5G network until the first or second quarter of FY23, at least.
Dish TV Not in a Good Position, Needs Rights Issue: Company Official Posted: 24 Oct 2021 08:40 PM PDT Dish TV, one of the largest Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators in the country hasn't been in the kind of place it used to be. In simple words, the company has been losing subscribers at a higher rate in the last few years. There was a time when Dish TV used to compete head to head with Tata Sky for gaining the largest market share. But now, Dish TV's business has slowed down quite heavily. According to a PTI report, a Dish TV official said the company needs the Rs 1,000 crore rights issue. This is because it needs to upgrade its Set-Top Box (STB) technology and attract new users to purchase the company's services. Without doing this, the company official said that Dish TV's subscriber base would keep shrinking. Dish TV Rights Issue is Being Opposed by Yes BankYes Bank, which is the single largest shareholder in the company and is holding 25.63% of the equity is opposing the rights issue. As per the report, Yes Bank believes that this rights issue is only to dilute its equity stake in the company. The official said that Tata Sky and Airtel have already gone much ahead of the company in upgrading their STB technology. Both Airtel and Tata Sky customers can watch over-the-top (OTT) and satellite content through their Android STBs very conveniently. Dish TV also needs the money to spend more on creating a new brand image for itself. But with Yes Bank opposing the rights issue, it is becoming a little hard for the DTH company to go ahead with the fundraising activity. For the unaware, Dish TV reported a net loss of Rs 677.75 crore for the year ending March 31, 2021. The company currently has over 16 million active customers. Dish TV needs the rights issue desperately to turn things around for itself.
Vodafone Idea Broadband Plans You Should Look Out for Posted: 24 Oct 2021 06:38 PM PDT Vodafone Idea is also in the fiber broadband business through its subsidiary company, namely, You Broadband. The broadband subsidiary of Vodafone Idea (Vi) isn't as big as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Jio, or Airtel's FTTH business, but it is expanding. You Broadband has made multiple changes to its offerings in 2021. In cities like Ahmedabad, Navi Mumbai and more, You broadband is offering very competitive internet plans. Today, we are listing some of the plans from the company that you can look out for. Vodafone Idea Broadband Plans in India You Must Look Out forAs mentioned above, You Broadband isn't that big of an FTTH company. But it offers services in some of the major cities of the country. In Mumbai, the company had revamped its plans earlier this year and made them super competitive to the offerings of Jio, Airtel, and BSNL. We are listing some of the plans from You Broadband that the company offers in the Mumbai circle. You can choose plans with speeds of 40 Mbps, 60 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 150 Mbps, and 200 Mbps. Note that none of these plans come with over-the-top (OTT) benefits. So if you are someone who wants OTT benefits or other additional benefits, go for FTTH plans from other operators. The 40 Mbps plan starts at Rs 590 (inclusive of tax) for 30 days; likewise, the 60 Mbps plan starts at Rs 679 (including tax), the 100 Mbps plan starts at Rs 826 (including tax), the 150 Mbps plan starts at Rs 944 (including tax), and the 200 Mbps plan starts at Rs 1,062 (including tax). All of these plans are also available for long-term validities. Users get 3.5TB or 3500GB of monthly fair-usage-policy (FUP) data with this plan. You Broadband also provides the users with a free Wi-Fi/modem. But it is only free after paying a one-time completely refundable security deposit of Rs 1,999. The router provided by You Broadband supports dual-band connectivity and is ideal for high-speed FTTH plans. With the long-term broadband plans, customers also get additional days of service from the company. With the 90 days plan, users get five days of additional validity. With the 180 days or six months plan, users get ten days of additional validity and lastly, with the 365 days plan, users get 15 days of additional service from You Broadband. You Broadband also offers voice combo plans to the users, but its tariffs are different from the unlimited plans. Again, neither of these plans come with OTT benefits which is sort of a disappointment.
