Indian Government Giving Telecom Sector the Breather It Needed Posted: 09 Oct 2021 09:34 AM PDT The Indian government is giving the telecom sector the breather it needs. It all started with the relief package that was announced back in September 2021. Last year, when the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) got the upper hand on the telcos in the adjusted gross revenues (AGR) dues case at the Supreme Court, some of the people in the industry were perplexed. It felt like the telecom department was out there to squeeze the telcos dry even when the industry wasn't at its best. Especially with Vodafone Idea (Vi) not seeing a hint of profits, it just felt wrong. In 2021, the sector's condition worsened. The statutory dues were getting too much, especially for Vodafone Idea (Vi). It almost felt like the government was going to let the sector go down, with Vi having no future. There weren't many expectations from the centre since there is no precedent for it. The Indian government isn't known for bailing out private sector companies. But this time, the government had to do something. It was the telecommunications industry that was in concern. The Modi government has been very vocal about how it wants to make India a digital country. Letting the telecom industry sink wasn't the best way of showing it. Thus, the relief package came. The Indian government in September announced that it was going to give the telecom operators a four-year moratorium in payments of the dues and the interests accrued on those dues. Along with that, the centre announced that it is ready to take equity in the telecom companies if they can't pay the dues after four years. But this is not all; the government went a step further. It also reduced the bank guarantees for the telcos by around 80% and is looking to reduce the litigation involved in the sector. Government Looking to Reduce Litigation in SectorThis is not a new development. A few days back, a report came from ET Telecom that suggested the government is looking to reduce litigation in the sector. This move from the centre will become a part of the new reforms in helping the telecom sector. At almost every turn, the telcos and the centre are in disagreement over something. The parties then look to settle it in court. However, it is not the best way of doing it for either of them. Only the lawyers keep making money out of such disagreements. Thus, to help the sector even beyond the relief package, the government is looking to reduce litigation. If you are wondering why the telecom sector is so important and why the government is taking the extra steps to ensure it thrives, I will surely go deep into that as well.

Wi-Fi Networks Can be Secured Using Simple Methods Posted: 09 Oct 2021 04:24 AM PDT As the internet is being used commonly for all purposes in modern life. No matter extent of protection that we take to keep hackers at the bay, devices connected to the internet are susceptible to malicious attacks. The reason that devices are connected to Wi-Fi networks are vulnerable to attacks despite having a secured network. How To Secure Your Wi-Fi NetworkIf you want to keep your network secured, check out the simple steps to secure your Wi-Fi connection. Stronger encryption: Ensure that your wireless access point is updated and does not use the dated Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security system. It is proven to be insecure and susceptible to hacks. Instead, you need to opt for a new Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) such as WPA2 or WPA3. It is also important to use a strong password to the network and change it on a timely basis, especially if it is an office or commercial setup. Make sure the WPS feature offered by the router is deactivated. Separate network for guests: If you have guests who will use your network, then you need to connect them to a separate network and not your family's internal network. Doing so, you will be able to prevent inadvertent malicious infections to the network. You can do this by creating a separate network with its own wireless access point. Make sure to turn on WPA protection for the guest network you have created to keep control over who uses it. Hide the network name: Usually, networks broadcast the name to make it easy to find and connect to them. You can opt to hide the network name but this is not a failsafe step when it comes to keeping your network safe. Hackers can use scanning tools that will detect the network and SSID that are hidden. The step will give you an additional layer of protection to your Wi-Fi connection. Protect with VPN: Virtual Private Networks (VPN) are designed to secure your online activity and keep the private search history safe. These networks keep the data secured from prying eyes using encryption Hackers can penetrate your network and but they will be blocked from causing harm to the system by using VPN permanently. Turn it off: One of the simplest ways to keep your Wi-Fi network protected is to turn off Wi-Fi when not in use. If it is turned on all the time, then you will be creating an opportunity for malicious attacks.
MediaTek Dimensity 2000 Chip Expected to Use TSMC 4nm Node Posted: 09 Oct 2021 02:21 AM PDT As we are nearing the end of this year, rumours are rife regarding the next-generation flagship chipsets that will power the flagships of 2022. One such chipset that is being talked about is the MediaTek Dimensity 2000 SoC based on the ARMv9 architecture. The latest leaks claim that MediaTek could be the first chipmaker to place orders for the 4nm foundries of TSMC. Now, the major specs of the MediaTek Dimensity 2000 have been leaked online hinting at the performance it could deliver. MediaTek Dimensity 2000 Specs LeakAs per the reputed tipster Digital Chat Station, the MediaTek Dimensity 2000 is believed to feature a Cortex X2 prime core, which is clocked at 3.0 GHz, three cores of Cortex A70 cores and four cores of Cortex A510. On paper, this setup appears to be similar to that of the Snapdragon 898 and Exynos 2200 that will be based on the 4nm process. Notably, the recent partnership between Samsung and AMD for GPU and Huawei is a result of the challenges faced by the chipmakers. It is tipped that the upcoming MediaTek offering will be the only chipset that will use the new Mali-G710 MC10 GPU. Talking about performance, the Mali-G710 arrives as the sequel to the Mali-G78 and it is touted to deliver a 20 percent improvement in speeds and a whopping 35 percent enhancement in performance for machine learning tasks. These numbers have been revealed by ARM officially. However, Samsung expects this GPU to be 30 percent faster than previous-generation Mali chips. The actual performance of these chips will be decided by the clock speeds of the two 4nm nodes. The early benchmarks have hinted at the speedy performance of these chips but these are not the final numbers and we should not take these seriously. We need to wait for the actual devices to be launched with these chips to measure their real-world performance and speeds. We can expect all the three flagship chips – the MediaTek, Samsung, and Qualcomm offerings to be launched later this year or in January 2022. There could be a delay until early next year due to the shortage in the semiconductor industry. These chips are intended to power the ARMv9 phones that will be launched as early as 2022.
Bharti Airtel Revenues Expected to Boost in the Medium Term Posted: 09 Oct 2021 12:11 AM PDT Bharti Airtel had survived the storm that Reliance Jio had created when it first came to the market. The telco's survival will be given in examples of successful business case studies because Airtel not only survived but also ensured profits in the books. Airtel has slowly gained momentum back and stayed true to its vision of providing superior network services than its competitors. Bharti Airtel recently announced that it would be offering benefits worth up to Rs 6,000 to its customers on the purchase of new smartphones from the leading mobile makers in the country. The telco has shortlisted over 150 smartphones to be a part of this scheme. This scheme will be offering cashbacks to the customers in two parts. Now whether the cashback will be offered directly into the bank account of the customer or the Airtel app or in some other form is what Airtel didn't exactly say. Regardless, the telco will offer the cashback in two parts where the first part will be worth Rs 2,000 and will be offered to the users after 18 months, and the second part worth Rs 4,000 will be offered to the users after the completion of 36 months. Note that the cashback will only be offered if the users keep on recharging with the Rs 249 plan or more. Bharti Airtel Revenues Will Boost on the Back of This OfferThere will be many users who will be interested in earning the Rs 6,000 cashback. Thus all of them will keep paying Airtel at least Rs 249 or more than that for the next three years. Many new customers might also follow on the back of this offer and join the telco's network. This should keep helping Airtel in growing its sequential revenues every coming quarter. This is not exactly what Jio is doing, but both the telcos have found their unique ways of attracting new customers and retaining the old ones with excellent offers. At the end of the day, it will depend on which telco's network services are better.
BSNL Users Face Outage for Several Hours Posted: 08 Oct 2021 09:55 PM PDT It looks it has become an 'outage' season for digital platforms and telecom networks. In one week, we have seen Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp outages along with Jio's network issues in Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh circle. Now, according to new development, users of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have faced network outage issues. According to a report from The Tribune, BSNL's network issues were present across its services including broadband, mobile internet, and phone calling services. Users living in the Amritsar and nearby areas were affected by the network outage. BSNL Users Had to Go Through a Tough TimeBSNL users who didn't have any other SIM card or a broadband connection from another company were completely disconnected from the world for a while. They couldn't even report the issues to BSNL officials since they had no medium for connectivity. Tersam Lal, a government contract told the publication that he had started facing network issues from Thursday night. Lal complained that he couldn't carry out his usual work because of network issues. The cause of the network outage is not known at the moment. It took hours before the network of BSNL came back online for the users so that they can connect back to the internet and world. During the concerned hours where the network of the state-run telecom company was down, people couldn't work from their homes, students couldn't join their online classes, and a lot more activities had become difficult for the users of BSNL. Since the issue was there for hours, BSNL should issue a statement for the cause and let the users know that it won't happen again. There are over 5 lakh subscribers of BSNL's services across mobile, broadband, as well as leased line connection in the concerned region. All of these 5 lakh subscribers had to face the network outage issues of BSNL. It looks like an 'outage' of services has become the trend.

Prepaid Plans Make More Sense With OTT Benefits Today Posted: 08 Oct 2021 01:32 PM PDT Prepaid plans in India make more sense today when they are bundled with over-the-top (OTT) benefits. There are plenty of prepaid offerings from the four existing telecom operators in the country, including Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi), Bharti Airtel, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). In comparison to India, some of the international markets, such as the United States of America (USA), have very few offerings for their prepaid customers. With more options in hand, Indian consumers have the power to choose the most appropriate plan for themselves. Every telecom operator in India offers around 30 or more prepaid plans to the customers. But which prepaid plans actually make an impact on the users? Let's talk about it. Prepaid Plans Should Have the Following BenefitsAlmost every prepaid plan is expected to have basic benefits, which include unlimited voice calling, 100 SMS/day, and a certain amount of fair-usage-policy (FUP) data. This is a plan structure that's widely followed by the telecom companies in India. But apart from the basic benefits, what's the additional thing that attracts users? It is an over-the-top (OTT) benefit or multiple of them. A lot of users today look for prepaid plans with OTT benefits. It has somewhat become a trend for telecom companies to offer something extra to the users in India. Private telecom operators including Jio, Airtel, and Vi all provide their users with an OTT benefit. Airtel has a special Airtel Thanks programme that offers multiple OTT benefits to the users. At the same time, Jio offers a free subscription to over five different applications that include JioTV, JioNews, JioCloud, JioSecurity, and JioCinema. Vodafone Idea offers users an OTT benefit of Vi Movies & TV. All the telecom operators have jacked up the benefits of their plans and are now gearing up to increase the tariffs. This is a timely move from the operators and one which they need desperately because of the low average revenue per user (ARPU) in the industry.
