Dish TV Loaded Fresh Content on In-House OTT Platform Watcho

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 01:13 AM PST

Dish TV Dish TV, a major Direct-to-Home (DTH) service provider in India, offers customers an in-house over-the-top (OTT) platform called Watcho. The company had loaded Watcho with fresh content in the second quarter of FY22. This move from the DTH company came to ensure that people more and more people stuck with its platform. The app already has cumulative downloads of 36 million so far. According to an Indian Television report, Dish TV focused on reducing its debt in the second quarter of FY22. The DTH operator had reported consolidated subscription revenues of Rs 6,445 million and operating revenues of 7,181 million for the quarter ending September FY22. During the same quarter, Dish TV repaid debt worth Rs 697 million. This helped the telco in reducing its debt to Rs 5,566 million at the quarter-end.

Dish TV Net Profit During the Quarter Was Rs 354 Million

The DTH company's profit before tax was Rs 553 million, while the net profit was Rs 354 million. While profits in the books are keeping the company in the race, there's a big concern that's looming over the DTH operators. Dish TV said that household spending during the quarter wasn't in line with what households used to spend during the last few years. The company said that this is majorly because of the emergency of OTT platforms. As per Dish TV, high-end consumers tried out OTT while the low-end consumers were sampling Free Dish services. To counter this and stay in the competition, Dish TV announced multiple offers. The company was offering one month of recharge on every five months subscription. Further, there's was a 'Lucky Recharge Offer' wherein customers could get up to 100% cashback on a recharge of Rs 501. Dish TV believes that this year's festive season had also seen a rise in consumer spending like what used to happen in previous years.

Wi-Fi HaLow Claimed to Provide Connectivity Up to 1 Km

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 11:41 PM PST

Wi-Fi HaLow With the advent of the digital era, more and more smart products are being launched globally every day. While all of them require strong connectivity, Wi-Fi networks have a big limitation of range. But, to fulfil the dream of more connected devices in the world, Wi-Fi HaLow has just arrived, which is claimed to offer connectivity up to a range of 1 km. It is developed to connect a large number of Internet of Things (IoT) products such as smart air conditions, smart speakers, and other industrial smart devices. According to a BusinessInsider report, the new Wi-Fi technology has received certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance. For the unaware, Wi-Fi Alliance is the global organisation that certifies Wi-Fi focused companies.

Wi-Fi HaLow Works on Current Protocols

All the existing smart devices can be connected with the Wi-Fi HaLow as it works on the current protocols only. Since it doesn't require new infrastructure, this new technology is expected to significantly improve the current Wi-Fi setup around the world. One of the biggest things about the new Wi-Fi technology isn't just the kind of range that it can provide; but also the amount of power it consumes. For providing such a large range, Wi-Fi HaLow consumes lesser power than the current Wi-Fi networks. The new Wi-Fi technology has been developed to work with the sub-1 GHz spectrum, while the standard Wi-Fi tech currently in the market can only support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band connectivity. The applications of Wi-Fi HaLow will be wide. It can be used for the connectivity of smart devices across industries and homes. But note that since it will operate on such a lower spectrum band, it won't be able to carry speeds the way a 5 GHz or a 2.4 GHz band network can. The commercial availability of this new Wi-Fi technology is still in the dark.

Vodafone Idea Short of Funds to Incur Capex: ICICI Securities

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 10:37 PM PST

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) is short of funds for incurring capex. The telco has indeed benefitted from the relief measures announced by the government, but the absence of cash for incurring capex is an issue. Vi's competitors including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are heavily investing in their networks to increase capacity and coverage. But due to stale revenues and cash flow, Vodafone Idea is not able to do that. ICICI Securities said that Vodafone Idea is very hopeful to raise cash by the year-end which will help the telco a lot in making new investments.

Vodafone Idea Net Debt Piles to Rs 1,927 Billion

As per the capital market company, Vodafone Idea's net debt has piled to Rs 1,927 billion. This includes deferred spectrum liability of Rs 1,047 billion, adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues of Rs 634 billion, and bank borrowing of Rs 228 billion. Vi will have Rs 97 billion in dues to clear in the next 12 months (by September 2022). If the company is able to successfully raise funds by the end of FY22, it should be able to clear dues comfortably as well as invest in networks. The telco's revenues fell 12.8% YoY in the September FY22 quarter. However, mobile revenues for the company saw an increase by 1.8% QoQ to Rs 83 billion. The subscriber base dipped by 0.9% which affected the mobile revenues. However, a positive for the telco was that its 4G subscribers grew. Vodafone Idea added 3.3 million new 4G subscribers during the quarter. Further, the average revenue per user (ARPU) of the company grew by 4.8% QoQ to Rs 109. An additional day during the quarter helped the telco with its ARPU and the price hike in base plans also helped. ICICI Securities has said that until and unless the telco doesn't add new subscribers and expand the user base, major revenue growth is not possible.

RailTel Telecom Revenues Grow With Strong Growth in ISP Services

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 09:38 PM PST

RailTel RailTel Corporation recently reported its Q2 FY22 profits at Rs 675 million. It is a 29% YoY growth because of the rise in telecom revenues and reversal of ECL provisioning. The company's project revenues did not grow in the first half of FY22, but the company is positive about the remaining half. With the growth momentum the company has, ICICI Securities said that RailTel is guided for at least 25% higher revenues in the FY22. Since listing, the company has grown by 25%, which is a healthy sign. RailTel is also eyeing projects worth Rs 70 billion to Rs 100 billion from the Railways for implementing high-speed data connectivity on the 700MHz band. The company is further planning to expand the towers to 5,000 from the current 1,100. ICICI Securities has maintained its 'Buy' call on the company and has increased earnings per share (EPS) by 5.3% / 4% for FY22E / FY23E.

RailTel Telecom Revenues Grew Because of Strong Growth in ISP Services

The telecom revenues of the company were up 29.3% YoY to Rs 2.7 billion. The increase in revenue has been driven because of the surge in the internet service provider (ISP) segment. For the unaware, RailTel has an ISP arm called RailWire. Strong subscriber addition in RailWire helped the average revenue per user (ARPU) to grow to Rs 500. The total number of subscribers in the quarter grew to 422,000 as compared to 318,000 in FY21. ICICI Securities report mentions that RailTel will see strong revenue growth even in the coming half of FY22. This is due to certain projects that the company is expecting to execute from the Railways and coal companies. The company's telecom services earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) grew 75% YoY to Rs 707 million. In H2 FY22, the company expects revenue growth of 25% compared to H1 FY22 growth of 23.8%. Telecom revenues of the company should grow further as more projects are completed.

WhatsApp Likely Develops New Apps For UWP and macOS

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 08:41 PM PST

WhatsApp It looks like there is good news coming in the future for the Windows Phone users of WhatsApp. A couple of years back, there was a possibility to see the Universal Windows Platform app for WhatsApp. Notably, apps developed using this technology are capable of working on Windows 10+ and Xbox. Now, a report by WABetaInfo citing @ALumia_Italia has discovered significant details about the development of the Windows Platform app. The good news for Windows users is that they will be able to install a new complete app to use the messaging platform, which is different from the WhatsApp Desktop app. This app supports multi-device feature, which does not require the primary device (smartphone) to be connected to the internet.

WhatsApp Likely Working On New Apps

Going by the WhatsApp tracker site, WhatsApp is developing a couple of new apps for UWP and macOS. After a long wait, it looks like the much-awaited development has finally arrived. According to the Twitter handle mentioned above, UWP and macOS Catalyst applications will be available to all users via a future update. However, the account that shared the details of the Universal Windows Platform app for WhatsApp has shared a few screenshots to back this claim. Undoubtedly, it is a significant development for Windows users. Furthermore, WhatsApp owned by Meta (formerly Facebook) has confirmed that it is also working on a new app that will be rolled out to macOS Catalyst. It is possible as Apple lets this to be compatible with iPad applications that will be used on macOS Catalyst. However, the support for iPads will be activated at a later date as the app is currently under development. As of now, there is not much information about the appearance of the app for macOS Catalyst. As per the claim, it will appear similar to the iPad app. Further sources emphasize that we have to wait for the iPad app to be rolled out to users though there is no word regarding the exact release date. Given that these new apps under development by WhatsApp are yet to be officially confirmed, we will share further updates in the future. Moreover, we can expect changes in the development as well.

Vodafone Idea MD Downplays JioPhone Next, Airtel Smartphone Offers

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 07:52 PM PST

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea's (Vi) managing director, Ravinder Takkar, has downplayed the smartphone offers from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Reliance Jio is providing the market with JioPhone Next under the EMI scheme while Airtel is offering a cashback on the purchase of select smartphones. According to an ET Telecom report, speaking to analysts, Takkar downplayed the impact of JioPhone Next and Airtel's smartphone cashback offer. Takkar said that Vodafone Idea has been proving its users with such an offer for a long time. In fact, Vi also offers financing schemes on refurbished devices. Takkar believes that it is still too early to say how the smartphone offer from either of the telcos will impact the market, but he said that Vi has been providing one such offer for a long-time now.

Tariff Hikes Necessary and 5G Spectrum Reserve Price Should be Cut

Vodafone Idea has been very vocal about the need for tariff hikes in the industry. The telco's average revenue per user (ARPU) is the worst amongst all the private telecom operators. It needs the increase in ARPU desperately to improve its cash flow. The last tariff hikes came back in 2019. It has been over two years now. But Vi can't go for tariff hikes until and unless its competitors are doing the same as well. Further, Vi's senior management feels like the 5G spectrum's base or reserve price should be cut to make it more feasible for the telcos to roll out 5G networks faster. Takkar said that if the base price of the 3.5 GHz spectrum band remains the same, it might not see any takers in this auction. The telcos can roll out 5G with the help of 4G spectrum and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) if they don't get the 5G spectrum for a feasible price. The sector regulator is currently working on deciding a fresh base price for the 5G spectrum and the auctions are expected to take place around April-May.

Vodafone Idea Trumps Jio in One Prepaid Plan Category

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 05:41 PM PST

Vodafone Idea Jio In many ways, while Vodafone Idea's (Vi) prepaid plans are a tad bit expensive than Jio and Airtel's offerings, you can't deny the benefits they come with are really good. Vodafone Idea knows how to stand out with its prepaid plans and that too how to do it in style. There's a prepaid plan in the telco's arsenal that trumps Jio's offering badly. So much so that Jio's plan looks insignificant in front of Vi's prepaid plan. Before we go ahead and check out the details of the concerned prepaid plan, there's one thing that you should know. While Vi's prepaid plan is better in terms of benefits offered, Jio's prepaid plan is way better if you are looking for a wider 4G coverage throughout the country. The major problem with Vodafone Idea is not that it doesn't provide users with great offers but that the telco doesn't have the kind of 4G coverage its competitor does. That said, let's move on to the prepaid plan that we are talking about.

Vodafone Idea Prepaid Plan That's Way Better than Jio's

Vodafone Idea offers a plethora of prepaid plans, and so does Jio. However, there's one plan offered by both the telcos that's almost the same. Both Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio offer a 3GB daily data plan for 84 days. This plan is built for heavy data users or for people who are relying on 4G networks to work from their homes. But when you compare the benefits, Vodafone Idea's 3GB daily data plan for 84 days is just a much better value option than Jio's same offering. This is because of multiple reasons. First, Vi's plan is cheaper and second; Vi offers much more benefits than Jio. Here's a breakdown of both the plans so that you can understand them better.

Vodafone Idea 3GB Daily Data Plan

Vodafone Idea offers its 3GB daily data plan with 84 days of service validity for Rs 901. With this plan, the telco offers unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. But on top of that, users are also going to receive 48GB of bonus data from the company. Further, this plan is bundled with the two unique offers of Vi, which are – Weekend Data Rollover and Binge All Night. There's also an over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Vi Movies & TV offered to the users. But wait, that's not all. There's another major OTT benefit of the Disney+ Hotstar Mobile plan offered to the users for one year. Now let's take a look at what Jio is offering in the same domain.

Reliance Jio 3GB Daily Data Plan

Reliance Jio offers its 3GB daily data plan with 84 days of service validity for Rs 999. The basic benefits are the same – unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. There's no bonus data offered, and there are no benefits like Weekend Data Rollover or Binge All Night with this plan. Further, there is no major OTT benefit included except subscriptions to a few of the Jio apps. Looking at this, it can be safely said that Vodafone Idea has managed to comfortably beat the 3GB daily data plan of Reliance Jio.

Kappa Broadband Has Structured Plans Like Telcos Prepaid Plans

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 02:05 AM PST

Kappa Broadband We are all used to looking at prepaid plans from the telecom operators with 28 days, 56 days, 84 days, and 336 days validities. But hardly do we get to see a fixed-line broadband internet service provider (ISP) doing the same. Kappa Broadband, a regional ISP offering services in seven states of the country, including Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Rajasthan, is offering broadband plans with such validity structure.

Kappa Broadband Unlimited Data Plans With Different Kind of Validities That We Are Used to See

Kappa Broadband offers truly unlimited data plans to its customers. All of the plans offered by the company are on a pre-pay basis. The company offers its unlimited plans with 28 days, 84 days, 168 days, and 336 days validities. There are two plans with 28 days, 84 days, 168 days, and 336 days validities each. If you are comfortable with low speed, you can go with the 10 Mbps speed option, or if you want more speed, you can go with the 20 Mbps speed plan. The unlimited internet plans from Kappa are sort of expensive. This 10 Mbps plan with a validity of 28 days is available for Rs 800 per month. The price is mentioned without GST, so the plans are quite expensive. If you want the 20 Mbps plan for 28 days, you will have to shell out Rs 1,000 per month (18% GST will be added at the time of billing). The company promises that the upload and download speeds offered are uniform. This is very expensive considering what you can get from the fiber ISPs, including Airtel Xstream Fiber, JioFiber, BSNL Bharat Fibre, Excitel, and more. As mentioned above, you can purchase the 10 Mbps, and 20 Mbps plans with different validities from Kappa Broadband. The most expensive unlimited data plan listed on the company's website costs Rs 9,000 and comes with a long-term validity of 336 days which is approximately 11 months.

redmi Note 11t 5G Redmi Note 11T 5G is confirmed to launch in India on November 30, 2021. According to the speculations in the market, the smartphone is expected to be the rebranded version of the Redmi Note 11 which launched in China last month. The device is expected to come in three storage variants. Now the company has confirmed that the smartphone will launch on November 30, 2021. The teaser rolled out by the company doesn't mention any other details about the device. However, if the device is in fact a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 11 launched in China last month, there are a few things that we can guess about the device.

Redmi Note 11T 5G Specifications (Expected)

The Redmi Note 11T 5G is expected to come with a 6.6-inch FHD+ display with support for 90Hz refresh rate. The smartphone could be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 810 SoC coupled with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In the camera department, the smartphone could feature a 50MP primary sensor at the rear paired with an 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. For selfies, the device might feature a 16MP sensor at the front. The Redmi Note 11T might pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 33W fast-charging. These are not the confirmed details but mostly the device will come with all the above-mentioned specifications. As for the pricing, that's in the dark and quoting any amount would be a wild guess. However, it would be good to see the Redmi Note 11T priced anywhere around the Rs 15,000 to Rs 17,000 mark. Anything more than that would feel quite expensive if the device comes with the above-mentioned features/specifications. More details about the Redmi Note 11T should come out from Xiaomi in the coming days as the launch is very nearby. Once again, the smartphone will launch in India on November 30, 2021.

Huawei Likely to be Ousted from Canada’s 5G Journey

Posted: 14 Nov 2021 10:03 PM PST

Huawei The impact of alleged ties between Huawei and the Chinese government has been very bad for the former's business. Huawei has been one of the major telecom gear vendors across the world. But many countries are now considering keeping Huawei out of their 5G plans. With 5G, the term connectivity would evolve into something new. The kind of data that will be generated with hyper-connectivity that 5G will enable will be too great for any nation to fall into the wrong hands. According to a report from The Canadian Press, Huawei is likely to be ousted from Canada's 5G journey because of security concerns. The conservatives are pressing the liberals to keep Huawei out of Canada's 5G to ensure that Beijing can't spy on Canada.

Chinese Government Might Force Huawei to Surrender Info

It may be possible that the Chinese government and Huawei have no ties. But there's also a distinct possibility that Huawei is asked or rather forced by the Chinese government to surrender information about the application use patterns and personal information of the Canadians. The reason why conservatives are worried about this happening is because of the law that Chinese companies need to follow. As per the law, Chinese organisations and companies need to help the state intelligence if and when required. Huawei has said multiple times that it does not engage in espionage, but no one can really know about the inner workings. However, Alykhan Velshi, Huawei Canada's Vice President of Corporate Affairs, said the company complies with the rules and regulations of 180 countries across the world, and if Huawei were to violate the trust it has built, it would only be able to sell in one country. Regardless of Huawei's history, the risk for governments across the world to include Huawei in its next-generation connectivity plans is too big. Trusting Huawei would be like a gamble, but only this time, a whole nation would be at stake.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max to Get Macro Mode Toggle

Posted: 14 Nov 2021 08:38 PM PST

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Apple iPhone 13 series consists of two high-end smartphones – the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. These smartphones come with a great camera system featuring a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a telephoto lens that can capture macro photos. At the time of its launch, the iPhone 13 Pro did not come with a manual toggle for macro mode but it can be simply switched to the Macro model by getting close to an object. When the camera switches, it will create a flickering effect in the viewfinder, which looks like a bug. Notably, this is not an issue but it is the way Apple has developed the camera functionality in the iPhone 13 Pro models. These camera units can automatically switch to the macro lens when users reach closer to the object. While it looks like the screen is flickering, what actually happens is a change in the lens. However, one major aspect that Apple has missed out here is the addition of a toggle that will let users switch off the automatic lens changing feature as it will avoid the flickering effect.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Models To Get This Camera Feature

With the latest iOS 15.2 beta update, it looks like Apple is all set to add a new button that will let users of the iPhone 13 Pro models turn the macro mode on or off manually. The update to the iOS 15.1 adds an option to the Camera app to toggle the "Auto Macro" feature on or off. To toggle this feature when needed, it is important to go through the process of camera switching of the ultra-wide lens and zooming into the subject. Now, the upcoming iOS beta 15.2 brings the manual toggle to switch to the macro mode from within the camera app than entering into the settings. This toggle should be able to fix the issue that users of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models were facing to switch to the Macro mode whenever the subject is too close to the camera. To enable the Macro mode toggle in the latest update, users need to go to Settings -> Camera -> Auto Macro and disable the option. This way, when users get close to the object in the viewfinder of the camera, the Macro model toggle will appear at the bottom left of the camera UI.

TRAI to Get 5G Spectrum Details from DoT Within a Week

Posted: 14 Nov 2021 07:38 PM PST

TRAI 5G The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) about the availability of the 5G spectrum for the auctions. The lack of a National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) makes it a little confusing for the regulator to make recommendations. According to an FE report, DoT will submit a response to the queries of TRAI within a week. This will allow the regulator to go ahead with its process of consultations on the matter.

5G Spectrum Required by Multiple Stakeholders

There are multiple stakeholders including satcom players, telecom companies, and broadcasters who are interested in getting their hands on the 5G spectrum. Further, the DoT has also recommended that the 600 MHz spectrum band be included in the 5G spectrum auction along with the airwaves in the 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz, and mmWave spectrum. There will also be 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2300 MHz spectrum bands included in the auction. TRAI has to recommend a fresh base price for all the concerned spectrum bands. The DoT has prepared the response to the regulator's queries and TRAI will get it once the telecom secretary approves it. According to the publication's report, this should happen within a week. Because the telcos have been given extra time to conduct 5G trials, the spectrum auction is likely going to happen in April – March 2022. A cut in the reserve or base price of the 700 MHz band and other bands is very important to ensure that it is feasible for the telcos to rollout 5G in India. The higher the cost of the 5G rollout, the more expensive the service will be for the end consumers. It is worth noting that while a huge chunk of capex from telcos will go towards the 5G services rollout, there will also be 4G investments required for the next few years.
