Google Pixel 3 Series Misses Out on Software Updates Support

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 09:07 AM PDT

Google Pixel 3 Google is best known to have provided the maximum number of Android version upgrades for its Pixel smartphones. Besides this, the Pixel smartphones get the most extended security update support. However, the good things are coming to an end and the Google Pixel 3 series is also nearing its end. It has been officially considered to be the end-of-life and will not receive any Android as well as security updates.

Google Pixel 3 Series To End Support

Last month, the October security patch was rolled out quite fast. Currently, the Pixel 3XL and Pixel 3 run on Android 12, which is the final major update. Now, the series seems to be excluded from the November security bulletin.

Notably, the Google Pixel 3 series debuted back in October 2018 and booted into Android 9.0 Pie. It has lived through 4 Android versions having bagged 3 Android upgrades.

The end of this lineup could spark concern in users waiting on a definitive fix for the EDL mode issue. For those who are uninitiated, it is an issue that might have become all too familiar and has caused several Pixel 3 units to suddenly stop functioning. Eventually, these smartphones become completely unresponsive. The affected devices have stopped booting into Android instead show Qualcomm's Emergency Download (EDL) mode. Hopefully, the EOL will not mean the end of support with these issues. Recently, Google announced five years of timely monthly security patches for its newly launched Pixel 6 series. Some hoped that the Pixel 3 series could get similar extended support but it failed to get the same.

Google Pixel 3 Specifications

The standard Google Pixel 3 smartphone was launched with a 5.5-inch FHD 1080p P-OLED HDR display. The smartphone gets the power from an octa-core Snapdragon 845 processor. For imaging, the Pixel 3 smartphone makes use of a single 12.2MP rear camera sensor along with a dual-selfie camera setup comprising two 8MP shooters. The XL model features the same camera arrangement as the vanilla variant. Besides this, the smartphone will have a larger 6.3-inch notched display with a denser resolution. Both devices can hold fairly well though the bezels and notches might be considered a deal-breaker by many.

Apple Providing iPhone XR for Free as Alternate Device if This Happens

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:02 AM PDT

Apple iPhone One of the most time-consuming things can be getting your mobile device repaired. Sometimes phones can take more than a few days to get repaired and the customers might even require to leave the phone at the service station. Although a secondary device can be used for the time being, most users have a majority of their data saved in their primary devices and it can get difficult to stay away from it for long. To overcome this inconvenience caused to users, Apple has come up with a strategy. The tech giant has decided to provide iPhone XR as a loaner device as a replacement when it takes a longer duration to repair the device. The service is going to be available in the US and other regions.

Terms to Avail the Loaner Device

As of now, Apple offers iPhone 8 as a loaner device, but according to a report from MacRumors, Apple will start providing iPhone XR as a loaner device from November 4th for the user who might have to leave his/her phone at the service station for a longer period. The production of the iPhone 8 has already been terminated and iPhone XR can be considered its replacement. The latter device comes with dual SIM slots, A12 bionic chip, and more exciting features. Although, this service is available only in the US as of now. However, not every customer will be eligible for the loaner device as cleared by the company on its FAQ page. According to it, only the devices that will take a really long time can be replaced with a loner device. Moreover, consumers would have to return the loaner device in a period of 14 days after their original device gets repaired. Customers will also need to delete all the data saved in the loaner device. Customers can get the loaner devices at Apple Stores and authorized providers in the US and other regions.

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:22 AM PDT

Poco M4 Pro 5G Poco is gearing up to take the wraps off the Poco M4 Pro 5G smartphone on November 9. This will be a global announcement of the smartphone. Now, there are speculations that the device could be a rebranded variant of the standard Redmi Note 11 that was unveiled in China recently. Ahead of the announcement of this device, the company has started teasing new features of the Poco M4 Pro 5G, thereby hinting at what we can expect from the upcoming smartphone.

Poco M4 Pro 5G Features

As per a recent tweet by the official Poco Global account on Twitter, the Poco M4 Pro 5G could be launched with support for 33W fast charging capability. Also, it is said that the device will be an affordable offering out there. Also, the tweet goes to state that the smartphone will make use of a 6nm chipset, but the exact name of the processor remains unknown. However, from the existing rumours and speculations, the processor driving the Poco M4 Pro 5G is believed to be the MediaTek Dimensity 810 SoC. Given that the smartphone’s launch is nearing, we can expect further details to be revealed in the coming days.

Poco M4 Pro 5G Expected Specs

As rumoured, if the POCO M4 Pro 5G is a rebranded variant of the Redmi Note 11, then the specifications will be almost the same. Going by the same, let’s take a look at the specifications of the Redmi Note 11. The Redmi Note 11 was launched with a 6.6-inch FHD+ LCD display with a refresh rate of 90Hz and a punch-hole cutout to house the selfie camera sensor. Under its hood, the smartphone from Poco uses an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 810 SoC teamed up with Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. Connectivity features on the device include 5G, 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS, USB Type-C port, and Bluetooth 5.0.

Apple Cuts Short Production of iPads, Ensures Chip Supply for iPhone 13

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:35 AM PDT

Apple Slashes Supply of iPads Apple has opted to slash the production of its iPads in order to increase the chip supply for the newly launched iPhone 13 series. To ensure faster delivery times, the company had to increase the chip supply for iPhone 13 by cutting short on iPads. This looks like an appropriate move from the company since the demand for iPhones will always be more than the iPads. Particularly for the iPhone 13 series, which is priced the same, the demand is high but the supply is short.

The Reason for Slashing iPad Production

According to a Nikkei Asia report, Apple has cut short on iPads production by a whopping 50% of what was initially planned for the last couple of months. The vigorous rise in demand for the iPhone 13 series around the globe led to the decision of slashing the production of iPads in order to provide chips and other components for the iPhone 13. However, it also proves the fact that the company uses a lot of similar components for its devices across formats. The option to utilize the same components for different products allows Cupertino-based giant to keep their production going by shifting from one product to another while the world suffers from a semiconductor shortage. The demand for iPhone 13 has been rather stronger than what was expected compelling the company to shift on the production of the iPhone 13. On the other hand, the demand for iPads is not less either. But this step has led to increasing in delivery time of the latest iPhone 13 which hints towards the improving supply chain. The lead time for the latest iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 which is the total time taken since the start of the production to the conclusion around the globe is around 12 and 13 days respectively. On the other hand, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max which usually took 37 days of lead time are now down to around 32 days. This initiative might have improved the total production time of Apple products but the last generation series iPhone 12 had a rather faster lead time as compared to what it is now.

Airtel's India Business Post Quarterly Revenues of Rs 19,890 Crore

Bharti Airtel's India business posted quarterly revenues of Rs 19,890 crore which is up by 18.3% YoY on a comparable basis. Airtel's Business revenues also grew by 11.5% YoY which is a good sign and encouraging for the company and its investors. The telco's Homes Business continues to demonstrate strong double-digit revenue growth, up by 21.3% YoY. Bharti Airtel's total customer base in India stands at 355 million. As mentioned above, out of this figure, 60% of the users are 4G subscribers. The 4G data subscribers of the telco have increased by 26% YoY to 192.5 million. The thing worth noting here is the ARPU which is industry-leading at the moment. Reliance Jio had reported an ARPU of Rs 143.6 during the same quarter which is Rs 10 lesser than Airtel's. This is a great win for Airtel and the good thing is that most of its subscribers are active as well. Airtel had rolled out additional 3500 mobile towers 56,000 mobile broadband base stations during the quarter. The telco said that it has over 33 million customers on the VoWi-Fi calling services. Bharti Airtel would be happy looking at the increasing ARPU which should increase even further with the tariff hikes in the near future.

BT Teams Up With OneWeb to Commence Trials by Early 2022

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:45 AM PDT

BT OneWeb Partnership BT Group, UK's leading telecommunications and network provider that serves customers in 180 countries and LEO satellite company OneWeb have entered into a partnership for a new Distribution Partner Agreement. As per the partnership, OneWeb will provide Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication services to BT Group. This development follows an initial MoU (Memorandum of Understanding), which was signed back in July this year. Notably, BT is testing the way LEO satellite technology integrates with the existing terrestrial capabilities meet the customers' communications requirements.

OneWeb And BT Partnership

On successfully completing this agreement, BT will commence the first five trials with users from early 2022. The partnership between OneWeb and BT will span over an increasing range of connectivity solutions all over the world and specific opportunities for UK as well. The LEO satellite communications provider OneWeb is expected to deliver coverage on a global scale by June next year via a constellation of 648 LEO satellites. It is stated to deliver services from the North Pole to the 50th parallel, which will cover the entire UK later in 2021. With the new partnership supporting BT's wider network, the company intends to deliver digital solutions all over the UK by 2028. This will be possible via on-demand and requestable solutions. BT will leverage and integrate both non-terrestrial and terrestrial technologies to deliver on its ambition to deliver seamless connectivity. The agreement of partnership marks a clear path towards the first LEO satellite solutions that will be available for users in a year. As a part of the next time, BT will test the capabilities in its lab located in Bristol to demonstrate how they integrate with the existing services. With the existing capacity levels of OneWeb Satellites, the initial trials will focus on its role as a low latency, supplementary backhaul solutions to sites where a backup solution or additional capacity is needed. Also, it will focus on delivering enhanced resilience for business users. On completing the same successfully, BT will begin the early trials for both UK and global customers in early 2022. As OneWeb increases its capacity, the future use cases will also widen, thereby opening up more opportunity to explore the use of satellite for fixed wireless access and IoT backhaul in rural areas.

Bharti Airtel Profits Will Increase QoQ on the Back of Tariff Hikes

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:33 AM PDT

Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel is today going to release the financial performance report of the September quarter and the first half of FY22. YES Securities believes that Bharti Airtel's average revenue per user (ARPU) figure will reach Rs 153. This is because of the indirect tariff hikes from the telco as it removed the base Rs 49 plan for the users. At the same time, the analysts believe that the telco's subscriber addition rate will be slowed for the quarter. According to Jefferies, Airtel's revenue growth for the September quarter should be strong. The telco's revenues may rise 7% QoQ with a steady margin. Jefferies believes that Airtel's ARPU will increase to Rs 157. Even Jefferies said that telco's subscriber addition rate might have slowed down during the quarter.

Focus Areas Will be ARPU

It is fine if Bharti Airtel's subscribers reduce or the subscriber addition rate is slowed down as long as the telco's ARPU is increasing. Further, there's another round of serious tariff hikes luring in the corner which will also help the telco in improving its ARPU significantly. Bharti Airtel's cash flow should be in the green. The telco had recently announced its decision of accepting the moratorium benefits laid out by the government. Airtel has accepted a moratorium on both spectrum and adjusted gross revenue dues payments. Analysts believe that Bharti Airtel's enterprise revenue won't see any major jump. According to the Emkay Global Financial Services report, Bharti's growth in the enterprise segment will be in the low-single-digit zone on a sequential basis. It is only a wait of few months before Airtel can come out with 5G services for enterprises. 5G will play a big role in boosting the enterprise revenues of the telco in FY23. The tariff hikes could come around the last quarter of FY22 or the first quarter of FY23 right before 5G is introduced in India.

Vodafone Idea, Ericsson Test 5G for Healthcare with mmWave Spectrum

Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:07 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Ericsson have partnered up to showcase or demonstrate the power of 5G to bring healthcare access to remote parts of the country. With 5G, the healthcare sector is going to benefit a lot, as well as patients from across the country, will be able to access healthcare services on the go. For the trial, Vodafone Idea used the 3.5 GHz mid-band spectrum and the 26 GHz mmWave spectrum allotted by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in Pune city. The telco deployed Ericsson radios and Ericsson Dual Mode Core based on cloud-native technology comprising of 5G SA, 5G NSA & LTE packet core functions.

Vodafone Idea, Ericsson Partner Up to Test 5G for Healthcare in India

With the help of high-speed data and low latency, a doctor located in the urban area could carry out an ultrasound scan on a patient who is far away in a rural location. This test will showcase the reach of the 5G networks and would also enable high quality and easy healthcare access to rural India in the future. Both the companies also showcased the fixed wireless access (FWA) and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) applications with 5G. With 5G, the network technology won't just be limited to the direct average consumers but would also help enterprises, the healthcare sector, and the government in growing the economy of the country. All the major industries are expected to leverage 5G for enhancing their overall operations and boosting business with digitalisation. It is worth noting that on Monday, Vodafone Idea had announced that it had partnered up with startups to test the innovative use cases of the 5G technology. Vi had announced partnerships with Vizzbee and Tweek Labs to conduct tests on Aerial Traffic Management and Motion Capture System with the power of 5G networks. It is great to see Vodafone Idea getting aggressive with 5G trials. This will ensure that the telco is ready with 5G as fast as possible.

5Gi Is What Indian Telcos Should Go Ahead With Believes Government

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 11:27 PM PDT

5Gi The Indian government is of the opinion that the telecom operators in the country should go ahead with the 5Gi standard developed by the TSDSI. However, the telcos have vocally opposed the opinion of the government in the past. This is because the 5Gi standard would add to the cost of the network deployment and will also slow down network rollout times. Further, Indians might also see increased prices of smartphones as they will have to be manufactured in a different manner by the phone makers to support 5Gi. According to an ET Telecom report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made a committee that will be seeking inputs from the ecosystem stakeholders, telecom operators, and others about 5Gi by March 2022. Note that the DoT will keep taking inputs for the next two years and won't stop by March 2022.

Indian Government Wants to Understand the Current 5G Devices Available in the Market

The government wants to understand the kind of 5G devices that are available in the market. Further, the DoT will also plan on how the development of 5G-based applications and 5G ecosystem can take place in India. The telcos are already testing 5G networks in different parts of the country. For the most part, the telcos have kept mum about whether they are using the 3GPP standard equipment or the 5Gi standard equipment. However, Bharti Airtel recently conducted a 5G test in a rural region of the country where the telco had used 3GPP compliant 5G FWA devices. It might be possible that the government instructs the telecom operators to go ahead with the 5Gi standard in India. That would not be great for the smartphone prices and would certainly lock India out of the global ecosystem. Regardless, it is something that the telcos and the consumers will have to prepare for. Telcos want to go ahead with the 3GPP compliant 5G networks, and they have made that much clear.

Airtel, Jio Revenue Market Share to be Dominant

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 10:17 PM PDT

Jio Airtel It is no surprise that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel will earn the maximum revenues out of mobile revenues and other telecom services provided. Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) can follow the top two telcos, but they won't even reach near the figure of revenue market share that Airtel and Jio will have. According to the Bernstein report, by 2025, Bharti Airtel will have a revenue market share of 31%, while Jio will have a revenue market share of 47%. Jio's subscriber market share is further expected to reach 48% by the same time frame.

Reliance Jio No Longer Requires Price Cuts

As per analysts, price cuts aren't required by Reliance Jio anymore. The telco already has the biggest subscriber and revenue market share in India. This means that the tariff hikes are very near. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea already hiked the tariffs indirectly by removing the Rs 49 plan for the users in the September quarter. The telcos will now focus on increasing revenue from operations. The last tariff hikes for the telecom industry came way back in 2019. Since then, no major changes to tariffs has been made. However, that should change by the time India gets live 5G networks. Bernstein believes that just like 2019, the operators would look to increase tariffs by 25% – 30% this time as well. It will help the operators in increasing their average revenue per share (ARPU). Jio recently reported an increased ARPU of Rs 143.6, which is not that bad, but that is only out of removing inactive customers from the subscriber base. With the tariff hikes, the ARPU for the telcos will be bumped up significantly, which will solve all of their cash flow issues. Especially for Vodafone Idea, a positive cash flow is very necessary to make all the future investments in 5G and also keep expanding the 4G networks across the country.

JioPhone Next Pricing Is Not Disruptive: Jefferies

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 08:42 PM PDT

JioPhone Next Reliance Jio recently unveiled the pricing and the features of JioPhone Next in India. The telco has announced that its much anticipated 4G smartphone will be sold for Rs 6,499 in India. It will be available under four EMI schemes which will be bundled with different voice calling and data benefits. Jefferies, a major brokerage believes that the JioPhone Next doesn't have disruptive pricing. It doesn't give the JioPhone or any other feature phone user any big incentive to upgrade to a 4G smartphone. Jefferies said that Reliance Jio might reduce the price of the JioPhone Next in the near future as it did with the JioPhone in the past.

Airtel and Vi Might Partner With OEMs, Financiers to Avail Smartphones at Low Costs

According to the analysts, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) might partner with the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and financiers to bring their 2G users decent smartphones at very low costs to fast-track their upgrade to 4G services. This way, the other private telecom operators will counter any market expansion challenge that the JioPhone Next brings to the table. Airtel's Rs 6,000 cashback offer is in the same lines as well. With the smartphone offer, Airtel will not only look to improve its average revenue per user (ARPU) as the users need to continuously recharge with Rs 249 plan or more, but the telco might also see its 2G user base convert to consuming 4G services. Vodafone Idea doesn't have any smartphone offer currently. The telco might come out with one very soon and that should heat up the competition in India. JioPhone Next is available in India for an upfront cost of Rs 1,999 under the EMI scheme which will also attract a one-time processing fee charge of Rs 501. The rest of the amount can be paid off by the users in EMIs of 18 or 24 months as per their choice.

There are additional offers bundled which include the Binge All Night and Weekend Data Rollover with a free subscription to the Vi Movies & TV Classic. Starlink Plans to Operate 80% of Devices in Rural India by 2022 End

Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:08 PM PDT

Starlink in India Starlink, a SpaceX owned satellite broadband company is currently in the process of figuring out the regulatory approval process in India. The company plans to enter the Indian market by mid-2022. Starlink's India Director, Sanjay Bhargava along with his wife Anita Kapur Bhargava recently shared a video presentation demonstrating the company's plan of rolling out satellite broadband service in rural India next year.

Starlink Wants to Operate at Least 200,000 Devices in India by the End of 2022

Starlink wants to operate at least 200,000 devices by the end of 2022 in India. Out of these 200,000 Starlink devices, the company wants 160,000 (80%) of the devices to be in rural India while the rest in urban cities. The company is planning to provide 20 schools in Delhi and 80 schools in a rural district near Delhi with free 100 Starlink hardware kits. Further, the company's representatives are also planning to work with NITI Aayog to identify 12 rural districts, three from each region including the West, East, North, and South to offer internet services. This move from Starlink will certainly boost connectivity in the remote and rural parts of the country. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX said that Bhargava deserves a lot of credit for the success of PayPal in India. Musk said that Bhargava is now helping with serving the rural communities in the country as well. The major challenge for Starlink would be to figure out how to get regulatory approval in India. India will see some major competition between companies such as Bharti owned OneWeb, Hughes, and Starlink from 2022.
