India’s 2G Users Goldmine for the Telcos Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:04 PM PST It is frankly strange to see Vodafone Idea (Vi) not aggressively fighting Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel for 2G users. There are over 300 million legacy network users in the country. If these users are upgraded to 4G soon, the overall income of the telcos will increase dramatically. However, it won't happen with the push from a single telecom operator. Every operator including Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel needs to deliver incentives to these legacy network customers so that they can upgrade to 4G. But it is easier said than done. The financials of the telcos are already beaten enough. So they can't go all out on offering incentives. But Airtel and Jio have still managed a way to come out with smartphone offers to attract legacy network users. Surprisingly, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has not made a single move. The telco is mum and isn't doing a lot to attract legacy network users. Vodafone Idea High Debt and Low Income a ProblemAlmost anyone can comfortably guess that high debt and low income would be a very big problem for any business. Vodafone Idea is in a very down position right now. But the telco is expected to make a comeback soon on the back of all the relief measures that the government has provided to the telecom sector in the last few months. It would be interesting to see Vodafone Idea coming out with a new 4G smartphone offer for consumers in India. But this is just speculation from our end at the moment. Vodafone Idea might not be in a position to offer cashbacks or incentives right now. The telco is focused on increasing its average revenue per user (ARPU) figure and that is where its focus will lie for the next few months. Vi might not be very scared of losing customers right now if it can get its ARPU figure up.

Poco M4 Pro 5G All Set to Launch, Here’s What We Know Posted: 08 Nov 2021 05:34 AM PST Poco M4 Pro 5G which was announced last week by the smartphone maker last week is now ready to be launched on November 9 as per the reports. Since the unveiling of the phone last week, a lot of details about the device have been leaked online. It is expected that the new smartphone will be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 11. In the past as well, Xiaomi and Poco have been launching rebranded versions of the devices, and the new Poco M4 Pro 5G is expected to be the same. Features of Poco M4 5G Pro, Rebranded Version of Redmi Note 11?Redmi Note 11, Redmi Note 11 Pro, and Redmi Note 11 Pro+ were launched in China in late October of 2021. Xiaomi hasn't provided any information about the global launch of its device and it might happen that both Redmi Note 11 and Poco M4 Pro 5G is launched simultaneously on a global scale despite being almost the same devices. Although Poco has been particular about having a completely unique design language for its devices, the renders leaked online tell a different story. The design for Poco M4 Pro 5G seems to be quite similar to Redmi Note 11. The colour options for the new device are rumoured to be grey and the company's trademark yellow. The Poco branding seems to be visible on the rear camera module of the device and the front is expected to have a centrally aligned hole-punched design for the selfie camera. Poco has already confirmed the fact that the new device will feature a 33W fast charging. This is the same as what users would get with a Redmi Note 11. If the rumours are true, and Poco M4 Pro 5G is the same as Redmi Note 11, users can expect a 6.6-inch Full-HD+ LCD display on the device and a 90Hz refreshing rate. The processor used for the device could be a MediaTek Dimensity 810 chipset and feature a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. The device is expected to have 8GB RAM and 256GB storage space. The battery used in Redmi Note 11 is a powerful 5000mAh which might be the same in the case of Poco M4 Pro 5G.
Netflix Gaming in iOS Devices Might Be Different Experience Altogether Posted: 08 Nov 2021 04:29 AM PST The streaming giant Netflix will now see a change in the gaming service it offers to its consumers. The entity will now be compelled to provide all its games offered through its gaming service on the App Store for users to download and install. Currently, Netflix provides an all-in-one experience within Netflix where customers can enjoy everything in one place, however, the change comes in because of the mandate set by Google. Apple's Guidelines Have Created Conflict BeforeA very similar and major issue occurred the previous year as well. Microsoft was looking forward to launching its cloud-based gaming service, Xbox Cloud Gaming, via the App Store and was planning to provide all of the gaming experience to its users through the App Store itself. However, the idea collided with Apple's rules on gaming services, and the situation became quite a significant issue between Microsoft and Apple. In the end, Microsoft like every other entity had to back down and offer its gaming services to iOS users as a web experience instead of providing an in-app experience. According to a report from Bloomberg, the guidelines provided by Apple have been updated to stop apps of these kinds from being on the app store. Every game released on the app needs to be enlisted separately by the developers on a different app on the app store in order to comply with Apple's guidelines. Netflix operates on Android in quite a similar fashion. Although, the users can browse the games Netflix's gaming services have to offer within the app, but to actually download and install the game on their devices users need to go to Google Play Store. Reports suggest that Netflix will require to have the same approach on the iOS platform as well. The gaming service providers like Microsoft, Netflix, or even Meta might look forward to providing a better and enhanced user experience but these guidelines make it harder for the users to have a seamless experience. Apple Arcade, a gaming service provided by Apple, which is available on the app store itself, doesn't seem to have any tough competition due to the rules set by the platform. Needless to say, that the platform's rules will make it much tougher for Netflix's gaming service to succeed even when Netflix opts for the same solution as it does when it comes to Android devices.
MediaTek Reportedly Planning to Increase Chip Prices By 15% Posted: 08 Nov 2021 03:59 AM PST While MediaTek chipsets have witnessed a surge in demand, the global semiconductor shortage and supply constraints have caused issues in their supply. Now, the company is following the footsteps of other chipmakers and is raising the prices of its processors. As per a report by UDN, the Taiwanese chipset maker has increased the cost of some of its smartphone chips that are in huge demand this month. The hike in their prices is expected to be around 15% to give MediaTek a stronger performance and higher profit amidst the supply issues. As of now, MediaTek has not revealed any word regarding the price hike of its chipsets. However, sources close to the matter reveal that the company will raise the prices of its smartphone processors. MediaTek Processors Price HikeGoing by the same, the sources claim that the 4G LTE enabled chips witnessed a sharp price hike as the primary focus of the company is the 5G smartphone market. As of now, 4G chips have a smaller stake in the processor market but the demand for 4G smartphones are still quite high in regions such as India as 5G is yet to be commercialised in these markets. Also, the order of 4G handsets has made the supply of LTE-enabled smartphones outshine the demand. Similarly, the rival chip maker Qualcomm is also expected to take the prices of its chipsets higher but the same remains unconfirmed. As per the report, the cost of MediaTek processors will be as high as 15% of the 4G chipsets and 5% of the 5G ready chipsets. The main reason for this move taken by MediaTek is the increase in the overall cost of production by the TSMC foundry. Earlier, the company raised the cost of its Wi-Fi chipsets by nearly 20%. Also, there are speculations that foundries such as Samsung are also eyeing to raise their prices. Eventually, it goes without saying that the smartphones that will use these chipsets that have witnessed a price hike will also be relatively higher than usual. Already, we have been coming across smartphone price hikes from various brands due to the supply chain shortage.

Airtel, Vi, Jio Might Get 5G Spectrum at Reduced Prices Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:32 AM PST Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Reliance Jio have deliberately avoided purchasing the 700 MHz spectrum in the past because of its steep base price. The telcos were expecting the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the regulator to reduce the base price of spectrum in different frequency bands. According to an ET Telecom report, Fitch Ratings said that the regulator is expected to recommend a lower base price for the spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3300 MHz – 3.6 MHz bands. These bands will be crucial for the telcos when it will come to rolling out 5G services in India. India Might See Arrival of 5G by 2023Fitch Ratings said that the spectrum auctions for 5G airwaves are expected to take place in 2022. However, the ratings firms said that the commercial launch is expected in 2023. If this is correct, India will have to wait longer to see live 5G networks. In September, DoT had asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to recommend new prices for the mmWave bands, 3.5 GHz bands, and 700 MHz bands. The telecom department had also asked the regulator to include the new 600 MHz bands in its recommendations. The 600 MHz band will help the operators in providing better coverage to the users.Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio's Revenues Will be Boosted by 8%-12% in 2022Fitch Ratings said that Airtel and Jio's revenues are going to grow by 8% to 12% in 2022. Further, the ratings firm said that the average revenue per user (ARPU) of the telcos will also increase on the back of possible tariff hikes and migration of legacy network users to 4G services. Both Jio and Airtel have already set the ball rolling to convert legacy network users in India to 4G consumers with their smartphone offers. Only Vodafone Idea is not doing anything to attract 2G customers to 4G services, which might change soon.
Reliance Jio Possible Reasons for Pricing JioPhone Next Expensive Posted: 07 Nov 2021 11:28 PM PST Reliance Jio recently launched the JioPhone Next in India. The pricing of the device didn't go down well with many in the market. The telco was expected to price the device at or under the Rs 5,000 mark. However, it is now available for Rs 6,499 in the market. Consumers going with the EMI option will have to pay at least Rs 8,000 or more for each plan they opt for. For knowing about the JioPhone Next offer in detail, please click here. It is worth noting that Reliance Jio is known for being aggressive with its strategies. So if you are wondering why the telco has gone with the JioPhone Next with such a cold offer, here's everything you should know. Reliance Jio Reasons that Might Have Pushed the Company to Price it ExpensiveFirst of all, note that “expensive” and “affordable” is a subjective thing. The reason why we consider this an expensive device is because of its features. Jio could have easily priced the device at a lower rate, but it chose to stick with the Rs 6,499 mark. This might be due to the rising cost of smartphone components. Everything right from the chipsets to displays have become expensive during the pandemic because of less supply. This could be one reason why Jio had to come up with a higher price point than expected. Another reason why Jio went with a high price could be that the company is actually trying to earn a bigger margin and turn its smartphone business profitable as early as possible. Further, the EMI plans could be priced expensive to aid with increasing the average revenue per user (ARPU) figure for the company. However, JioPhone Next won't push a lot of legacy network users to upgrade to a 4G device. It will be interesting to see the sales of the JioPhone Next in the coming months and whether or not it can help the company in adding new subscribers.
Bharti Airtel Counting on Legacy Network Users to Increase Revenues Posted: 07 Nov 2021 10:31 PM PST Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in India is counting on its legacy network users to increase revenues. The telco's average revenue per user (ARPU) figure rose to Rs 153 in the September quarter which is a 5% sequential growth. While it is the best ARPU amongst all the telecom operators in India, Bharti Airtel still has room to grow it further in the short-term. The telco will be counting on the legacy network users to shift to 4G networks and services, resulting in the growth of ARPU and overall revenues. According to a note by IIFL that has been seen by ET Telecom, Bharti Airtel's ARPU can jump by 1.5x to 2x if the telco's 2G users shift to 4G and then further start using postpaid services. Bharti Airtel Confident About Smartphone Cashback OfferBharti Airtel is quite confident about the smartphone cashback offer that it has rolled out for the customers. The telco isn't worried about competing with the JioPhone Next offer because of the price of the device from Jio. The ultimate goal for Bharti Airtel is to onboard as many customers as possible in the Airtel Black plans. It will be the best ARPU booster for the telco. Further, it will help Airtel in growing in Direct-to-Home (DTH) and Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) segments. Airtel can work on expanding the reach of its 4G networks and also increase the capacity in the near future with the help of additional spectrum. The recent rights issue concluded by the telco will help majorly with improving the cash flow for the company to invest aggressively in its networks. Gopal Vittal has already said that Bharti Airtel is looking to reach Rs 200 ARPU levels in the short-term while in the long-term the company plans to hit the goal of Rs 300 ARPU levels. The Rs 200 levels can be reached with the help of tariff hikes but that would result in a higher customer churn rate.

Jio, Airtel, Vi Will Have to Wait More for Backhaul Spectrum Posted: 07 Nov 2021 07:47 PM PST Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) will have to wait further for getting the backhaul spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The DoT is waiting for the final spectrum policy to be formulated before it starts giving the spectrum to the telcos for backhaul. For the unaware, the backhaul spectrum is different from the access spectrum. According to an FE report, the telcos have said that they will abide by all the final rules that the spectrum policy may come with, thus, there's no need for the DoT to delay the allocation of the backhaul spectrum. Telcos Have Been Waiting Since a Year and a HalfThe telecom operators have been waiting to get the backhaul spectrum from the DoT for a year and a half now. But the DoT is in the process of coming up with the final spectrum policy and the telecom department will only allocate spectrum after that. The DoT is working out whether the telcos and the other kinds of communication companies including the satcom ones can be provided spectrum through administrative allocation. Currently, the access spectrum is provided by the government via an auction route. This process is followed to keep everything transparent for everyone. However, the satcom industry wants the government to start providing spectrum through administrative allocation. Even the private companies which are looking to build private 5G networks in the future want the telecom department to allocate spectrum administratively. But the telcos have time and again opposed the move. According to the telecom operators in India, everyone should get the spectrum in a fair manner through the auctions. Regardless, the telcos haven't received any backhaul spectrum from the government because the DoT has not worked out the final spectrum policy yet. But it shouldn't take a lot of time now as the DoT is already in the process to do so.

It comes with a total validity of 84 days meaning the users get a total of 336GB of data. But the benefits don't stop here.
