How to Use macOS Monterey Live Text Feature

Posted: 11 Dec 2021 02:59 AM PST

Live Text Feature

The current major release of macOS, Apple's desktop operating system for Macintosh computers – macOS Monterey was announced by the company in the June of this year as a successor to macOS Big Sur and was launched in the month of October. Although it comes with a lot of new and exciting features, one of the most prominent features available with macOS Monterey is the "Live Text." The Cupertino-based tech giant Apple describing the feature stated that it makes text 'completely interactive in your photos' which allows the user to copy and paste it, look it up, translate and much more. Mentioned below are the details in regards to this feature.

Compatibility of the Feature

In the beginning, when macOS Monterey was announced in June, it was reported that the software will only be compatible with Macs powered by Apple Silicon processors. However, changes were made and during the beta testing of the software, it was noted that macOS will be compatible with Intel-powered Macs as well. This means that the Live Text feature of macOS Monterey is available on any Mac that is capable of running the software. This includes the MacBook Pro model from 2015, MacBook Air models from 2015, the 12-inch MacBook from 2016-17 and many more. It is to be noted that the Live Text feature is currently available in English, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Portuguese and Spanish languages.

How to Use the Feature

In simple words, the Live Text feature is capable of recognizing the text in an image and making it interactive, just like any normal text will do. For example, if a user receives an image from a family member of a shipping number. The Live Text feature can recognize the text and will make it interactive so that the user can simply copy the tracking number to the clipboard.

Interacting with the text is quite simple. Users simply need to move over the cursor to the text in the image just like it happens in a word document. As soon as the user has highlighted the text they want to select, they can simply use the keyboard to perform further functions of copy/pasting or looking it up or translating it. There's also a new visual lookup feature that allows users to swipe up or click the information button in any image to know more about the objects showcased in that picture.

Live Text feature works in the Photos App, Safari, Quick Look and the Screenshot interface. Moreover, the feature is also available on iPhone with iOS 15 and iPad with iPadOS 15.

Samsung Galaxy A53 Production Begins in India, Launch Expected Soon

Posted: 11 Dec 2021 02:12 AM PST

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G

According to the recent reports, it is evident that Samsung is working on a successor device for Samsung Galaxy A52. Earlier leaks have already showcased high quality renders of Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. Looking at the renders, it seems that the upcoming device will follow the same design language as its predecessor. Now as per the latest rumours the production of the new Samsung Galaxy A53 5G has already begun in tech giant's Noida factory in India. This means that the launch of the device is not very far and the company may announce the launch date pretty soon.

Details About the Handset

As mentioned above the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A53 5G will have a pretty similar design to its previous version Samsung Galaxy A52 which would mean that the former will come with a punch-hole display with a bezel-less design. It is also speculated that the device will come featuring an AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It wouldn't be too far stretched to suggest that the device will have a full HD display and will also feature an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Talking about the processor of the device, Samsung Galaxy A53 5G could operate on an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset. The said chipset was also used in Samsung Galaxy A52 along with Samsung Galaxy M52. The camera module of the device will feature a quadruple rear camera setup. The back of the device is expected to be made of polycarbonate. The primary camera of the device could be a 64MP sensor while the details of the other three cameras are still not known.

It is expected that Galaxy A53 5G will not feature a 3.5mm audio jack suggesting that the users will have to use a USB Type-C port for the audio. The thickness of the handset is rumoured to be 8.14mm and the leaked renders suggest that the colour of the handset was white, however, Samsung may release it in other colours as well. No further information is available on the device, however as the production process will come to an end and the launch will near, one can expect the devices to appear on certification sites or benchmark sites.

Snapdragon 8 Gen1 Found to be Over-Heating

Posted: 11 Dec 2021 01:12 AM PST

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 was announced a few days back. It is the flagship chipset from Qualcomm that will power Android smartphones in 2022. Much recently, the Motorola Edge X30 became the first smartphone in the world to sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1. In recent developments, the Motorola Edge X30 was found to be over-heating.

A popular tipster known as Ice Universe tweeted that during the extreme test of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1, the Moto smartphone over-heated. The tipster said that 2022 might be a very hot year for Android smartphones.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 Details

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 was launched in place of the expected Snapdragon 898 SoC for powering the flagship Android smartphones of 2022. The Snapdragon 888 SoC that was announced for the flagship devices of 2021 was built on the 5nm process, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is built on the 4nm process.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is 10% faster than the Snapdragon 888 SoC. But the overheating issues are also more in the latest flagship chipset from Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 888 is also over-heated sometimes, but according to the claim from Ice Universe, the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 appears to be severely over-heating.

The tipster didn't say or hint about how the test was conducted and what the device had to endure but only said that asked the users to be prepared for all the overheating issues that they might face with the Snapdragon 8 Gen1.

Many flagship smartphones from OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Samsung, and more are expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 in the year ahead. Thus, long hours of gaming or video recording would make the Android flagships of 2022 over-heat. The 4nm process means that the chipset has shrunk further than what the 5nm process SoC was built like. Hopefully, Qualcomm can find a way to resolve the issue soon, and the flagship Android experience for 2022 doesn't go down the drain.

Satcom Players Want USOF, Telcos Don’t Like That

Posted: 10 Dec 2021 11:26 PM PST

Satcom Players

The Universal Service Obligations Fund (USOF) was set up in 2003 with the aim to provide subsidies to operators and help expand connectivity in rural and remote areas of the country. Now, the satellite communications (satcom) players want access to the USOF. Starlink, one of the major satellite broadband service providers owned by SpaceX, is expected to launch commercial services in India in 2022. Starlink has asked the government to tap into the USOF for funding the first-year cost of setting up and installing the Starlink hardware.

Telcos Want Govt to Treat Satcom Not More than What It Is

The telecom operators don't like that satcom players are eyeing the USOF. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), recently urged the government to use the USOF for subsidising smartphones for a select group of people so that even the low-income users who can't afford a decent 4G smartphone can purchase one.

Not only Ambani but also P Balaji, Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer, Vodafone Idea (Vi), urged the government to keep India an operator-led broadband and rural coverage country. Balaji requested the government to not treat the satellite systems in any special way as it is just a jump technology model for reaching the floating population or for specific inhospitable terrains.

The telcos are also not happy about the demand for administrative allocation of the spectrum from the satcom players. Telecom operators want the government to give spectrum to every player involved in a uniform and transparent manner through an auction. The satcom players are arguing that it would be unprecedented, and even the other nations don't give satcom sector spectrum through auctions, but administrative allocation.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is still working on the pricing of the different spectrum bands. Things for the industry should be clear soon enough as the spectrum auctions are expected to take place between April and June 2022.

BSNL Will be Positive After Looking at Ericsson Mobility Report

Posted: 10 Dec 2021 10:25 PM PST

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be very positive looking at the latest Ericsson Mobility Report. According to Ericsson, 4G is going to be a major network service in India till 2027. This makes sense as well since 5G would take its sweet time to expand as the telcos don't have the means to be aggressive with their investments because of all the dues they have on the books.

BSNL, which is still working on introducing homegrown 4G in India, would be very positive after looking at the report from Ericsson. The state-run telco would still have the opportunity and ample time to steal some subscriber market share from the private telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio.

BSNL 4G Can Still Make a Difference

Many are of the view that BSNL should directly go for 5G and skip 4G. That is impractical since the telcos would be looking to launch 5G NSA in India, which requires a 4G core. 5G SA is an option, but it is way costlier, and there's no real need for it right now.

A PAN-India 4G network from BSNL could ensure that people get good coverage and also take off some of the load from the private telcos' networks. People might not get the best 4G speeds from BSNL, but at least it will help in decongesting the private telcos' networks which is great for the end consumers.

The private telcos can also then focus on retaining higher average revenue per user (ARPU) customers with both 4G and 5G while the low ARPU customers can latch on to BSNL's networks.

There's something that the private telcos still haven't done or don't even want to do. BSNL can be helped with the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) to deliver its 4G networks in the remotest parts of the country. This will help the telco in reaching areas where none of the private operators is providing services.

It would be a great thing for BSNL as well as the nation. The better BSNL performs, the more taxpayers' money flowing into the company is justified. In fact, with better performance, BSNL would need more people to help with the mobile and broadband operations which will further create new jobs.

BSNL Said 4G Will Launch by September 2022

A few days back, BSNL said that its PAN-India 4G would launch by September 2022. While this seems like an unlikely time frame, it is still possible that BSNL's 4G networks might become active in multiple parts of the country by the end of 2022.

The state-run telco still has a chance to make a difference and justify all of the relief packages that it has received.

Jio, Vi and Airtel 2GB and 3GB Daily Data Plans Under Rs 1000

Posted: 10 Dec 2021 09:05 PM PST

Jio Airtel Vi

With the recent revision of prepaid tariffs by Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi), there has been a handsome hike of 20-25% in the price of new prepaid plans of the providers. The subscribers may need to make a prudent choice from a host of plans available to save money. Each plan has its own set of benefits, primarily differences in OTT subscription offers and validity. For a nominal user who requires 2GB to 3GB of data every day under a budget of Rs 1000, below are the prepaid plans available from Airtel, Jio and Vi.

Airtel 2GB and 3GB plans under Rs 1000

Airtel has a plan of Rs 549, offering 2GB of data, unlimited calls and 100 SMS per day. The plan that comes with 56 days validity has a mobile subscription offer to Amazon Prime Video trial for 30 days besides other Airtel Thanks app benefits. Another plan comes at Rs 359, offering the same benefits but with a lesser validity of 28 days. The plan at Rs 449 too offers similar benefits, but 2.5GB of data instead of 2GB.

Those who wish to grab a plan for the longer term may consider choosing a Rs 455 plan that offers 6GB of data, 900 SMS and unlimited calls for 84 days. Post data limit, Airtel will charge 50 paise per MB for the plan. A much cheaper plan comes at Rs 179, offering 2GB of data for 28 days. Although there is unlimited call provided, the free SMS limit is 300 in this plan. Besides, there is a considerable reduction in Airtel Thanks app benefits clubbed with the plan. The customer can only get a 30-day free trial mobile subscription to Amazon Prime Video along with Free Hello tunes and a free Wync music subscription under Rs 179 plan.

For those who are eyeing Airtel 3GB plans under Rs 1000, an available choice is Rs 699 per day plan that comes with 56 days validity. Unlimited calls, 100 SMS, Amazon Prime membership with 56 days validity along with Airtel Thanks app benefits is a considerable choice.

Jio 2GB and 3GB plans below Rs 1000

For Jio, the starting rate of 2GB per day plan is Rs 249, offering 2GB of data, unlimited voice calls, 100 SMS per day and subscriptions to Jio streaming services, all valid for 23 days. The Rs 299 plan offers similar benefits for 28 days.

Those who are eyeing 56 days validity have two options to choose from – Rs 533 plan and Rs 799 plan. While both plans offer 2GB daily data, 100 SMS/day, unlimited calls and access to Jio streaming services. The one-year OTT mobile subscription benefit to Disney + Hotstar is the added benefit of the Rs 799 plan compared to the Rs 533 plan. If validity is the main factor than OTT subscription, Rs 719 plan would be the right choice as it comes with 84 days validity. Call and message benefits remain the same as other plans.

Unlike Airtel, there are two 3GB prepaid plans below Rs 1000 for Jio, one at Rs 601 and another at Rs 419. Rs 601 plan features the OTT benefit of a one-year mobile subscription to Disney + Hotstar, while the other plan has Jio's services. Both offer 3GB per day, along with unlimited calls and 100 SMS per day.

Vi 2GB and 3GB plans below Rs 1000

Vi prepaid plans are known for their weekend data rollover feature and the unlimited free streaming from 12 midnight to 6 am. These offers are not there for Jio and Airtel, making Vi an absolute choice for entertainment buffs, especially gamers and OTT binge-watchers. However, the provisions are not offered with all prepaid plans.

At Rs 179, subscribers can get 2GB of data, 300 SMS and unlimited calls from Vi for 28 days. The streaming benefit of the plan is access to Vi Movies and TV. The plan at Rs 359 is another choice to consider, as it features the same validity of 28 days and offers 2GB of daily data, 100 SMS per day and access to Vi Movies and TV. The subscribers can also get an additional 2GB of data as a backup every month at no extra cost. Vi's free 12 am-6 am data offer and the provision to carry over unused data to the weekend comes with this plan.

There are a few 3GB prepaid plans for Vi, especially the one that comes with a price tag of Rs 701. The plan offers unlimited true calls, a one-year mobile subscription to Disney + Hotstar, access to Vi Movies and TV, 100 SMS/day and 3GB of daily data as mentioned, all for 56 days. The customers can transfer their unused data of the week to the weekend, and binge watch from 12 am to 6 am with free data as well. A 3GB prepaid plan is available at Rs 475 for Vi with similar offers as that of the Rs 701 plan, but with 28 days validity. If to grab the same plan for 84 days, the subscribers will have to recharge for Rs 901.

Why Airtel Is Asking to Share Telecom Infra

Posted: 10 Dec 2021 08:18 PM PST

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel, on multiple occasions now, have said that sharing of telecom infrastructure is important. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises, during the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2021, reiterated that while adding new subscribers faster than the competition is important, the telcos also need to start working together. From this, Mittal meant that the telcos need to be able to see the larger picture and start sharing telecom infrastructure with each other.

Mittal said that there's duplication in telecom infrastructure in towers, fiber, and more. Thus it would be a good thing to share telecom infra.

What Does Sharing Telecom Infra Really Mean?

In simple words, telecom infrastructure sharing would mean that one telco pays the other telco some amount as the cost for using the already developed telecom infrastructure. So this will reduce the overall amount that a company would require to invest in its networks and also speed up the rollout of new services.

Sunil Bharti Mittal has been in the telecom industry for a long time now. The business tycoon has seen almost every high and low of the telecom sector and has helped Airtel successfully survive through it.

The point about telecom infrastructure sharing from Mittal is a very sensible one. Because companies like Vodafone Idea, which do not have a lot of money to invest into network infrastructure very rapidly can leverage the other telco's infra to provide services for a nominal cost.

The other company would also be able to generate more money out of the developed infrastructure which would add to its profits. Especially in India, where the telcos have very low average revenue per user (ARPU) but have to make very huge investments to cater to the needs of a billion people, sharing of telecom infra makes a lot of sense.

5G is around the corner and the investments for 5G would be very steep. Thus if the telcos can come around and figure out a way to work together, it would be good for the entire telecom sector.

Jio Makes a Big Statement Related to 5G

Posted: 10 Dec 2021 07:17 PM PST

Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio, India's number of telecom operators in terms of subscriber market share, has made a big statement related to 5G. The telco has said that before the 5G networks are even rolled out in the country, there will be at least 100 million to 150 million 5G smartphone users already in the market.

Sunil Dutt, President Devices Mobility and Mobility, Jio, said India would have between 100 million to 150 million 5G smartphones by the time the 5G networks kick-off.

First Time India Will be Ready With Ecosystem Before a Network is Launched

Earlier, whenever a new network technology came, people started buying mobiles and other devices related to that network technology after it launched. But for the first time, with 5G, even before the networks are launched, India will be ready with an ecosystem of devices and multiple use-cases to implement it fast and boost the progress of the economy.

There are already millions of users purchasing new 5G smartphones in the country every day. Almost every user looking to purchase a new smartphone is going for a 5G one to be future-ready. Even the smartphone makers are launching new 5G devices in India every month.

While it is still quite sometime before 5G will arrive for everyone in India, the 5G smartphones are selling at a rapid pace. 5G spectrum auctions are expected to take place in the quarter ending June 2022.

More and more affordable 5G smartphones are coming into the market. But to make 5G for everyone, there need to be multiple smartphones on offer under Rs 10,000, which come with 5G connectivity support. Further, one of the biggest issues with 5G smartphones today is that all of them are overpriced because of the high chip cost. Thus the smartphone makers are cutting out features from the 5G devices to compensate for the high chip cost and offer them in the market for an affordable rate.
