| DoT Asks Licensees to Register on Trusted Portal Posted: 18 Dec 2021 08:57 AM PST
Last week, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued an order asking all telecom licensees to register on Trusted Telecom Portal. According to DoT, many telecoms have not registered on the portal. Besides, the telecom licensees who have not submitted authorization letters for appointing a nodal officer for the portal also have to submit the same to the Designated Authority, the National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC). The new announcement is in line with the amendments in telecom licenses issued by DoT in March 2021. Trusted Telecom PortalThe government launched Trusted Telecom Portal in June 2021 under the Cyber Wing of the National Security Council Secretariat (NCSC). Consequently, the telecom service providers must connect their networks only on those new devices designated as 'trusted products' from 'trusted sources. Here, trusted products are those whose critical components and the products themselves are sourced from trusted sources. The service providers must access the portal and mark the telecom products and vendors from whom they intend to purchase the products. The details of the vendors, the products, their critical components and their sources are then populated into the portal by the TSPs and respective vendors, who will also be provided access to the portal. The government will evaluate the vendors and the sources of the components and decide the products as Trusted Sources and Trusted products. The approval is subsequently intimated to the vendor concerned and the applicant TSPs to proceed with their procurements. NCSC is the designated authority to conduct the assessment and issue approvals. A committee comprising members from relevant departments, ministries, industry and an independent expert will determine the clearance. The portal was designed and launched by CDoT, a research and development wing of the government. A beta version was earlier launched in April 2021. The initiative intends to improve supervision and facilitate effective control over nationwide telecom networks. The portal will act as a certifying window, and the authority can track the progress. If the telecom service provider plans to procure from a non-India registered OEM, the service provider has to give detailed information about the OEM. However, if the purchase is from an Indian OEM, the inputs are already provided in the portal by Indian OEMs. |

| 5G Can be a Costly Affair for Airlines, Passengers Posted: 18 Dec 2021 01:25 AM PST
5G, which is still in the process to launch in India, has already arrived in countries such as the United States (U.S.). Many locations of the U.S. already have live 5G networks and coverage. But the airlines are worried about the threats that 5G bring to the table. According to a Reuters report, major U.S. airlines have said that 5G should be avoided in the C-Band spectrum. For the unaware, the C-Band spectrum is airwaves in the 4 GHz to 8 GHz. The airlines are worried about the delays that this will cause and the cost that it will unearth for both the air carriers and the passengers. U.S. Telecom Companies Must Avoid Launching 5G Services in C-Band SpectrumScott Kirby, Chief Executive, United Airlines (UAL.O), said during a U.S. Senate Commerce Committee hearing that Verizon and AT&T must not launch 5G services in the C-Band spectrum right now. Kirby said that the launch of 5G in the C-Band spectrum could result in the diversion or cancellation of about 4% of daily flights, which will impact hundreds of thousands of passengers. It is worth noting that both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. government have raised concerns regarding 5G potentially interfering with the radios on the aircraft. According to Kirby, the launch of 5G services using the C-Band spectrum would be a catastrophic failure of the government. The United Airlines CEO didn't waste time and said that this is not a debate but a certainty. If the 5G services using the C-Band spectrum is launched, it will result in delays or cancellation of multiple flights every single day, and that would be a significant setback for the entire travel and tourism industry as well as the airline sector. But then there is CTIA, a wireless trade group that says the aviation industry's fear about 5G is completely based on discredited information and that there are already countries with live 5G networks operating flights smoothly. |

| Satellite Services to Get Faster Clearance in India Posted: 18 Dec 2021 12:00 AM PST
A new wave of connectivity solutions and technologies will emerge with the arrival of satellite broadband services in India. The satellite communications (satcom) sector needs all the help it can get from the government to ensure that it has a good base to operate on, and companies such as OneWeb and Starlink, which plan to come to India next year, can sustain their businesses in the long run. According to a PTI report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is currently working to simplify and fasten the clearance procedures for satellite networks. The faster the rollout will be, the faster new technologies can come to the market, and the earlier the companies can break even on their investments. Starlink Has Applied for Experimental LicenseAs asked by the DoT and TRAI, Starlink has applied for an experimental license to provide services in India. Devusinh Chauhan, Minister of State for Communications, said recently that Starlink has intended to apply for all the applicable licenses and authorisations required for commercial launch in the country. Until the time Starlink gets the commercial license and the necessary permits from the authorities, the company has been abstained from selling pre-bookings or any kind of service in the country. Sanjay Bhargava, India Head, Starlink, had said through a LinkedIn post that the company plans to apply for the commercial license on or before January 31, 2022. If there are no unexpected delays, the company will be ready to launch commercial services by April 2022 in India. From the recent statements or actions from the relevant ministers and the DoT as well as TRAI, it is evident that the government is working to ensure that a faster clearance of approvals for both the telecom as well as satcom companies take place. This will enable these companies to launch new services and technologies faster in the market pushing India towards its digital vision. |
| Excitel Offers 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and 300 Mbps Plans Under Rs 500 Posted: 17 Dec 2021 10:35 PM PST
Excitel, one of the fastest-growing internet service providers (ISPs) in India, offers a total of three broadband plans. The speciality about these three plans is that all of them are available under Rs 500 per month. But don't assume that these are basic entry-level speed plans. The three plans offered by Excitel provide users with 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and 300 Mbps speeds. All of them are available under Rs 500 per month, but there's a catch. Excitel Broadband Plans Become Super Affordable When Purchased for Long-TermWhen users go for the long-term options from Excitel, they get the plans for a very cheap rate. For example, users going for the monthly option of 100 Mbps plan would have to pay Rs 699 per month. But if the same plan is bought for 12 months, then its monthly cost drops to Rs 399. That is a significant saving for the customer. It is the same with the 200 Mbps and 300 Mbps plans as well. The 300 Mbps plan purchased for a single month would come for Rs 899. But if purchased for 12 months or a year, its monthly cost would drop to Rs 499. Note that the price mentioned here doesn't include GST. Further, users need to remember, while with the long-term plans, the monthly cost of the internet plan reduces, they have to make a lump-sum payment of thousands of rupees. The 300 Mbps plan is also available with over-the-top (OTT) benefits when users go for the long-term options (3 months). Further, on Friday, Excitel announced that the 100 Mbps plan would also come with an option to get OTT benefits. It is being called Entertainment Plan 2.0 and will be available for all the Excitel customers for an additional monthly cost of Rs 799. For more details, please click here. Excitel has announced the new OTT plan in partnership with a super OTT aggregator called PlayboxTV. |
| BSNL Prepaid Plans Built to Stand Out Posted: 17 Dec 2021 09:17 PM PST
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is the only telco that doesn't have a PAN-India 4G network. But the state-run telco offers really attractive prepaid plans from which no one can turn a blind eye. Today, we are going to talk about two such plans from BSNL, which are built to stand out. The two plans are — TrulyUnlimtiedSTV_398 and STV_447. These are the two plans from BSNL which are unique and offer very attractive benefits. BSNL Rs 398 and Rs 447 Prepaid Plans DetailedThe Rs 398 plan from BSNL is the only prepaid plan in the country that offer users data without any fair-usage-policy (FUP) limit. For the entire validity of this plan which is 30 days, users get truly unlimited data. They can consume as much data as they want, and none of the private operators is offering such a plan to the users. Along with the truly unlimited data, users get 100 SMS/day and truly unlimited voice calling as well. Then the second plan that we have mentioned here comes for Rs 447. This plan comes with a validity of 60 days. It offers 100GB of lump-sum data along with 100 SMS/day and unlimited voice calling. Users also get access to BSNL Tunes and Eros Now Entertainment services for no additional cost. The best thing about the Rs 447 plan is that it offers double the validity of the Rs 398 plan and doesn't even restrict users from consuming a certain amount of data in a day. Users can consume as much data as they want any day up to 100GB, after which the speed reduces to 80 Kbps. The Rs 398 plan is best for people who want to go for a plan that doesn't give them any worries about the amount of data they are consuming, while the Rs 447 plan is suitable for people who want to go for something with more validity. |
| Broadband Base Plans: Alliance vs Airtel vs Jio vs BSNL Broadband Posted: 17 Dec 2021 08:18 PM PST
Airtel, Jio, BSNL, MTNL and Vi are the first few names that come to subscribers' minds when they decide to grab a broadband service. There are plenty of small players who may not offer pan-India services but offer affordable plans. One such is Alliance Broadband Private Limited that offers services in Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. Competitive price range, especially the addition of OTT subscription in its base plan, is the primary attraction of Alliance broadband.
