Two of these telcos – Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea provide quite similar priced prepaid plans to their customers, however, come with a few unique additional benefits. In this article, we are going to compare the Rs 719 prepaid plan which is being offered by both these telcos after the recent updates in the tariff plans.

The Rs 719 Prepaid Plan from Bharti Airtel

Talking about Bharti Airtel, India's one of the most prominent telecom companies, under its "Truly Unlimited" packs, users get a Rs 719 plan. Apart from this, users can also get free online courses with Shawn Academy, Wynk Music for free, and much more.

The Rs 719 Plan from Vodafone Idea

5G to Arrive in India in Q2 of 2022
In a recent interview held on Thursday, the Communications and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has informed that the auction procedures for the next generation or 5G airwaves and network rollouts will start in the second quarter of the next year. He said that the auction process will be given a thumbs-up as soon as the sector regulator decides on the parameters necessary following the consultative process.

TRAI Has Already Commenced Consultation Process

Ashwini Vaishnaw in a TV interview went ahead to say that trials and tests will commence in the upcoming months as 5G is progressing fast in the country. He also informed that TRAI has issued a consultation process. As soon as the consultation process is completed and the parameters for the auction process are decided upon, then the auction and rollout of the service will begin instantaneously in the second quarter of 2022.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Telecom Regulator Authority of India (TRAI) has kick-started a consultation process that will focus on finalizing the base price across the 10 frequency bands which will aid in the commercial launch of 5G services in India. TRAI has also asked the stakeholders for their views by December 28 and counter views by January 11. The regulator has asked for opinions regarding issues pertaining to the sale of upcoming airwaves such as the reserve price, band plan, block size, quantum of the spectrum, and related conditions.

Ashwini Vaishnaw further added that with the introduction of 5G services in the country the network speed, data quality, as well as download and upload speed in the country, will witness a significant enhancement. He said that the goal of launching 5G service based in India is to eradicate foreign dependence and shared the vision of the Prime Minister that India can provide these services to other countries as well.

Is 5Gi Ready to Compete at Global Scale?

Telecommunications Engineering Centre (TEC) which comes under the telecom department has already commenced the evaluation of 5Gi for commercial use which is India's own standard for 5G services. The telecom giant Vodafone Idea or Vi has already said that the company is excited to begin 5Gi trials once it is ready with the compatible equipment. However, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has been opposing 5Gi citing the incompatibility of self-standardized 5G service on a global scale. COAI has said that the country lacks the required environment and device ecosystem.

Dish TV Denies Stake Sale to Airtel

Posted: 02 Dec 2021 07:45 AM PST

Dish TV

Dish TV denied the news reports suggesting a sale of its majority stake to the leading telecom service provider Bharti Airtel. The D2H service provider clarified the same in a regulatory filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

In the response, it also stated that Dish TV India Limited does not have the required information to report under extant SEBI Regulation 30 that may impact the stock price of the company.

The report that originally suggested the same claimed that Airtel is looking to purchase a 5.93% stake from Dish TV's promoter group and a 25.63% stake owned by Yes Bank Ltd. If the promoters and Yes Bank accept Airtel's offer, Airtel will buy the share from other investors until it owns 51% of the company.

The report further stated that Airtel's executives had conducted the preliminary talks with Dish TV parent company Essel Group's founder Subhash Chandra and the consulting company EY presented due diligence of the matter on October 25 to Airtel. The report cited the source as three people 'aware' of the matter.

Dispute between Yes Bank and Dish TV

There is a longstanding dispute between Subhash Chandra-led company and its current majority stakeholder Yes Bank. Yes Bank acquired the share of Dish TV after it failed to repay the debt, and the bank invoked the pledged shares. In September 2020, Subhash Chandra filed a police complaint against Yes Bank accusing of fraud while brokering a merger transaction between Videocon D2H and Dish TV India. The matter is currently under investigation.

As a part of the ongoing investigation, the Crime Branch froze the voting rights on the stake of Yes Bank in Dish TV India. Yes Bank moved against the decision in Allahabad High Court, which dismissed the Bank's plea stating that Court cannot interfere in the investigation. Yes Bank further approached the Supreme Court and received a favourable ruling that would allow Yes Bank to participate in the AGM of the Dish TV. Besides Yes Bank, other creditors, including IndusInd Bank, HDFC Ltd, L&T Finance, and Clix Capital, hold nearly 20% stake. Essel Group's founder Subhash Chandra has only a 6% stake in the company.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus Has Lived Its Glorious Life and It Is Coming to an End

iPhone 6

According to MacRumors, Apple will add iPhone 6 Plus to its vintage product list starting from 2022. This means that the company has discontinued its cycle of production and sales in all markets. However, as a relief for the customers who continue to use Apple iPhone 6 Plus, authorised Apple service centres will offer repair for the product for up to seven years, subject to the availability of its parts.

Apple first launched iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in September 2014. The devices featuring 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches displays kickstarted the trend of larger displays in Apple iPhones. The devices were also the first to offer support to Apple Pay, A8 chip and enhanced cameras.

Apple discontinued iPhone 6 Plus smartphones in 2016, but iPhone 6 continued to be available until late 2018. iPhone 6 is yet to be declared as a vintage product. Apple has already stopped the software support for both variants.

Demand for iPhone 13 weakens, reports say

Meanwhile, there are reports and speculations that the demand for Apple iPhone 13 has reduced. The company is said to have informed its component suppliers about this reduction of demand. Already, Apple was facing scarcity to avail its parts and hence, it had cut down the unit’s production by as many as 10 million. According to Bloomberg News, Apple was planning to make up for this shortfall by next year.

To boost the purchase of iPhone 13, the company had announced rebate programs, which enabled iPhone 12 owners to upgrade to iPhone 13 at a nominal cost difference. The shoppers in the US are said to be waiting for the booked devices for about a month.

Situations have changed, and the new COVID-19 Omicron could further slow down the market. By the time the market resurfaces for a better sale, Apple could be out with its next line-up. More significant feature changes are expected in the upcoming models, giving the customers a reason to wait. The buyers who were planning to upgrade could forego their plans as well. Overall, the future of the Apple iPhone 13 seems to be unsure, but Apple has not commented officially about the scenario.

Apple iPhones are Apple’s flagship product. According to the data of last financial year, they account for nearly $365.8 billion in revenue for the company.

Bharti Airtel 5G Use Cases Uncovered So Far

Posted: 02 Dec 2021 01:49 AM PST

Bharti Airtel

All the telecom operators in India are conducting 5G trials in different parts of the country. The telcos are using spectrum given by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for the trials. Bharti Airtel has come a long way with 5G trials. The telco has been able to uncover multiple use cases of the next-generation connectivity technology. With 5G, the role of connectivity would increase multiple folds and the way both machines and people communicate will evolve into something new.

Bharti Airtel has partnered with multiple companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Amazon Web Services (AWS), Accenture, Capgemini, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia and Google for conducting 5G tests and finding new use cases of the technology.

5G Use Cases Uncovered by Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel has uncovered multiple 5G use cases. It includes cloud gaming, smart healthcare, smart factory, and more. The benefits of 5G networks are a ton, and since the telcos have more time to conduct trials, we can expect more new innovative use cases to come to life.

One of the best use cases of 5G is the connected frontline. In certain situations, to help the frontline team of a business, experts are needed for guidance. Airtel says that with its 5G ready networks, enterprises/businesses can deliver better guidance to their frontline team resulting in lower costs and higher customer satisfaction and more.

With Industry 4.0 at the brink of arrival, smart factories are something we can expect to see becoming a reality across India very soon. Smart factories would require machines, robots, and sensors that can communicate and send data packets in real-time to keep the business smooth. To this end, Airtel says that its 5G network can help with the enabling of smart factories.

5G would even transform the future of healthcare access. Doctors and paramedics will be able to help their patients sitting thousands of kilometres far with telemedicine which 5G will enable.

The telco is now offering the 20% cashback (JioMart offer) with three of its prepaid plans, including the Rs 719, Rs 666, and Rs 299 plan. The cashback will be offered to the users in their JioMart account. Let's check out the complete benefits of these three plans.

Reliance Jio Rs 719, Rs 666, and Rs 299 Prepaid Plans

The Rs 666 plan offers 1.5GB daily data while the other two plans, including the Rs 719 and the Rs 299 plans, offer 2GB of daily data. The Rs 299 plan comes with a short validity of 28 days, while both the Rs 719 and Rs 666 plans come with 84 days of validity.

Vodafone Idea Following 3GPP Standard for 5G Core Network

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:52 PM PST

Vodafone Idea

When it comes to 5G, one of the biggest things that will be talked about is network security. To keep its 5G networks secure whenever it launches commercially, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is following the 3GPP standard. Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Vodafone Idea said that Vi is following the 3GPP standard for 5G's core network along with the firewalls.

For 5Gi, Singh said that Vi is working with a few companies/partners but there are no ready products. As soon as there are 5Gi ready products, Vodafone Idea would conduct trials using that technology to find relevant use cases.

5Gi Not Supported by Industry Experts, Telcos

The telcos in the past have said that they don't want India to become an isolated nation with 5Gi. If India wants to compete in the global markets and export standard 5G telecom equipment, it must be in line with what 3GPP recommends.

With 5Gi, the cost of equipment production to network roll out along with 5G smartphones in India would increase significantly. The telecom operators have urged to both the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to merge India's 5Gi with the 3GPP's global 5G standard. It would help the country achieve big scale and reduce costs.

Singh had also said that Vi is ready for both 5G SA (standalone) and 5G NSA (non-standalone). The telco is likely to go with 5G NSA as it helps keep the network rollout costs low.

In the trials that Vodafone Idea is conducting in Pune, Maharashtra and Gandhinagar, Gujarat, the telco has been able to achieve peak download speeds of 4.2 Gbps and upload speeds of close to 200 Mbps.

Vodafone Idea is working with different vendors including Ericsson and Nokia along with multiple ecosystem partners to test the true potential of 5G. The telco has been able to unearth multiple innovative use cases of the technology already and with the trials time extended now, Vi can test 5G for even more use cases before commercial deployment.

Bharti Airtel Might Purchase a Major Stake in Rival DTH Company

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:01 PM PST

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel might be contemplating purchasing the rival Direct-to-Home (DTH) operator, Dish TV. Bharti already runs a DTH business under the brand — Airtel Digital TV. The telecom operator is in early-stage talks with Dish TV to buy a majority stake in the company, reports Mint. Nothing's finalised yet as the discussions are still in the early stage. However, Dish TV's shares jumped 4.8% in the early trade session on Thursday to Rs 18.40.

Bharti Airtel's DTH business is already growing steadily. Airtel Digital TV had reported a 6% growth in YoY revenues in the September quarter.

Tata Sky Could Get Major Competition Airtel and Dish TV

Dish TV could certainly benefit if Airtel enters the business with a controlling stake. This could give major competition to the number one DTH operator in the country — Tata Sky. Tata Sky has kept its crown of being the DTH company with the largest subscriber market share in India for consecutive quarters, even years.

According to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Tata Sky had 33.37% of the market in Q1 FY22 while its rivals Dish TV-D2h and Airtel Digital TV had 23.45% and 25.76% market share, respectively.

While over-the-top (OTT) businesses/platforms are growing in India, pay-TV remains the single biggest source of entertainment for millions of households. Not everyone has access to the internet and OTT platforms in a uniform manner. But satellite television services even reach rural India in the same capacity.

At the time of writing, Dish TV is still trading at Rs 18.40, which is 4.84% in the green, while Bharti Airtel is trading at Rs 720, which is 0.31% in the red.

In other news, Yes Bank, a prominent stakeholder in Dish TV, will be allowed back to participate in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the DTH company after the Supreme Court ruling.

WhatsApp Banned Over 2 Million Indian Accounts in October Due to Spamming

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:32 PM PST

WhatsApp

The Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has banned over two million (2,069,000 to be precise) Indian accounts in October, reveals a compliance report published by the company. The company also received more than 500 grievance reports to address.

Over 95% of the bans are due to the unauthorized use of automated or bulk messaging/spam. Among the 500+ grievances report WhatsApp received, 146 were for account support, 248 were ban appeal, 53 for product support, 11 grievances raised safety concerns, and 42 were other types. Under the ban appeal requests, the company took remedial actions against 18 accounts. The corrective action could be either banning the account or restoring a previously banned account. Indian statements are identified by +91 phone numbers.

The data are revealed in WhatsApp's compliance report, a monthly publication published in accordance with the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rule, 2021. The report contains details of the user complaints received by WhatsApp and the actions taken against them. The report also stated the preventive actions taken by WhatsApp to battle abuse on its platform.

AI tools to detect abuse

In addition to responding to grievances received by the company, WhatsApp deploys tools and resources to prevent harmful behaviour. WhatsApp says that it believes in stopping the harmful actions prior to happening than detecting them after the occurrence.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp emphasized that it has no visibility into the content of the messages sent across its platform due to end-to-end encryption. However, it depends on the unencrypted information, including the profile photos, group photos, user reports and descriptions, coupled with behavioural signals to take actions. The company uses advanced AI tools and resources to detect and prevent abuse via the platform.

The new IT rule came into effect in May 2020, and it requires digital platforms with over five million users to publish compliance reports every month.

WhatsApp expanding capabilities in India

In another development, Uber and WhatsApp have joined together to roll out ride-booking via messaging service in India. The service allows Uber users to send messages to a WhatsApp chatbot to book a ride. Currently, the service is said to be active in the Northern city of Lucknow and would soon expand to other parts of the country. Recently, WhatsApp also launched an in-app grocery ordering service for Reliance JioMart.

Jio Doesn’t Like What Vodafone Idea Is Doing With Prepaid Plans

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:30 PM PST

Jio Vodafone Idea

Reliance Jio, India's number one telecom operator, doesn't like what Vodafone Idea (Vi) is doing with its prepaid plans. Post tariff hikes, Vodafone Idea, is the only operator that is offering the minimum SMS bundled prepaid plan for Rs 179. This isn't sitting well with Reliance Jio. This is because this restricts the users from sending port out messages. Regardless of the fact that Vodafone Idea is in a desperate situation with respect to new subscribers addition and subscribers market share, this doesn't sit well with Reliance Jio.

Reliance Jio, which is offering the cheapest prepaid plans in the industry, would be looking to add new subscribers. A lot of Vi users might want to port out to Jio after the tariff hikes have kicked in. But with an expensive base SMS prepaid plan, this hurts the chances of Jio to add new subscribers.

Reliance Jio Has Written to TRAI Complaining Vi's Move

Jio has expressed its concerns to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) expressing the move that Vodafone Idea has played. Vodafone Idea users with lower-end plans can't port out to either Jio or Airtel.

Even the Telecom Watchdog has said that Vodafone Idea's move is not fair and that users need cheaper SMS bundled prepaid plans so that they always have the power of porting out whenever they want to.

Reliance Jio's cheapest prepaid plan with SMS benefits come for Rs 149. This plan offers users 20GB of data (1GB daily data), 100 SMS/day, and unlimited voice calling for 20 days. There is also a Rs 155 prepaid plan that comes with 28 days of service validity with 2GB of data, 300 SMS, and unlimited voice calling.

Reliance Jio wants to touch the 500 million users mark as soon as possible. The telco is working towards the goal, but if Vodafone Idea customers with lower-end plans can't even port out, that will hurt Jio's ambitions.

TRAI is yet to make a statement on this issue.

Reliance Jio ‘Value’ Prepaid Plans After Price Hike

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:35 PM PST

Jio Value Plans

Reliance Jio today implemented the earlier announced prepaid tariff hikes. Post the tariff hikes, the ‘value’ plans of the telco have changed. There are three ‘value’ prepaid plans starting with the Rs 155 plan. If you are someone who likes recharging with economical or value-filled prepaid plans that offer both decent data benefits and substantial validity, these three prepaid plans are worth looking at. The plans that we are talking about cost Rs 155, Rs 395, and Rs 1559. In this article, we are going to discuss in-depth details and the suitability of these plans as per the need of different users.

The Three 'Value' Prepaid Plans from Reliance Jio

The first 'value' plan is the cheapest of the three. This plan from Reliance Jio comes at a price of Rs 155 and the validity period for the same is 28 days. This plan offers unlimited voice calls along with a total of 300 SMS to its users. Moreover, users get a total of 2GB of internet data at a high speed beyond which they can surf the net at 64 Kbps. The plan also includes some of the Jio apps such as Jio Cinema, Jio TV, and more.

The next value plan from the telecom giant is a medium-range validity plan that also offers unlimited voice calls along with a total of 1000 SMS to the customers. This plan comes at a cost of Rs 395 and users get a validity period of 84 days. Additionally, users also get 6GB of internet data which operates at high speed, and beyond which, users get 64 Kbps of speed. This plan also comes with a subscription to a few Jio applications.

The last plan in this list is a long-term validity plan and adequate for the users who need long-term calling plans along with reasonable data. This long-standing plan from the telco comes at a price of Rs 1,559 and users get a validity period of 336 days. Users not only get unlimited voice calling with this plan but also a total of 3600 SMS for the validity period. Furthermore, a total of 24GB of data is provided to the users with the purchase of this plan at high speed, and post 24GB users get 64 Kbps of internet speed. This plan as well includes various Jio apps add-ons.

People who are worried about consuming all of the high-speed data should not worry as Jio also offers data add-on vouchers starting at Rs 15 now. You can check out all the data add-on vouchers of Reliance Jio from the telco’s website.

WhatsApp Is Bringing Undo for Status Updates

The cross-platform messaging application WhatsApp consistently brings new updates and features to enhance the experience of the users. This Undo option allows users to delete the status that might have been uploaded by mistake. Now with the new update for WhatsApp Beta for iOS 2.21.240.17, the messaging app is bringing in the same feature for its iOS users as well. After installing this latest update on the beta version of WhatsApp, users can delete their wrongly uploaded status updates with a tap.

If users have the updated version of WhatsApp, they can simply find this feature on the bottom right of the screen as the "Undo" option will appear after a status update is posted. This "Undo" option will be available for a few moments when a user uploads a status and by clicking on it they can permanently delete their status. This feature has been made available for iOS users from Wednesday, December 1. If users don't see an option to "Undo" after they upload a status it means that the feature has not been rolled out on their device and they can wait for the next updates to use this option.

This new feature which is slowly being rolled out for the users has been named the "Undo Status Updates" feature from WhatsApp. It has been made clear that WhatsApp beta for iOS 2.21.240.17 is a compatible update, however, users might receive it with previous versions as well. WhatsApp has also informed that this feature is currently specific to beta testers and those who are not in the beta program will have to wait for the upcoming updates to avail this feature.
