| 5G Smartphones Don’t Need to Support All Bands Posted: 28 Dec 2021 05:27 AM PST
5G smartphones don't need to support every band there is. This is because it would increase the overall cost of the smartphone, which at the end of the day, consumers will have to bear. It is a classic case of 'beware what you wish for' as a consumer. The number of 5G smartphones in the market is rising, and with that, there are a lot of people wondering whether they got the right 5G device that supports all the frequency bands. Bharti Airtel wants the smartphone manufacturers to launch smartphones that support all the frequency bands. This is because the telcos can repurpose the currently used spectrum for 4G services for 5G. Most Smartphones in the Indian Market Support N78 BandMost of the popular smartphones in the market support the N78 band, which means they are good to connect with airwaves in the 3.5 GHz band. This is a mid-band spectrum, and it will be heavily used by the telecom operators to launch 5G services in different parts of India. There are very few smartphones in the market that support mmWave frequencies connectivity, and that is not a worry at all. mmWave 5G isn't going to be launched for normal consumers anytime soon anyway. The Indian Telcos would be focusing on 5G heavily with the airwaves in the 3.5 GHz band along with 2300 MHz band, 900 MHz band, 1800 MHz band, 2100 MHz band, and 800 MHz bands. This time around, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) might also introduce airwaves in the 600 MHz band, which will be very crucial for the telcos to provide extended coverage and strong network support in multiple parts of India. The thing is, smartphone users, don't need to worry much about which bands their 5G devices can support right now. The smartphone manufacturers have had close communication with the telcos regarding their 5G and are planning the launch of their devices accordingly. |

| Forget iPhone 15, Apple May Remove Physical SIM Slots from iPhone 14 Series Posted: 28 Dec 2021 01:43 AM PST
Apple fans are always eager to know what's in store for the next iPhone. In 2022, the iPhone 14 series is going to launch somewhere around September. But rumours and leaks around iPhone 15 have already started. There was a report from blogdoiphone that said iPhone 15 Pro models might be devoid of physical SIM card slots. But now, according to a Gadgets360 report (via MacRumors), Apple might be working to remove the physical SIM slots from iPhone 14 series devices itself. The Cupertino tech giant has reportedly recommended that telecom operators in the United States (U.S.) be prepared for e-SIM only smartphones. Even iPhone 13 Series Might Come Without Physical SIM Slots SoonAccording to the report, some U.S. carriers are also ready to offer the iPhone 13 series devices with only e-SIM support from the second quarter of 2022 to prepare for the transition. The future of mobile network connectivity might shift to e-SIMs only by the end of 2022. Note that the iPhone 13 already supports multiple e-SIM profiles and is the first iPhone series to do so. For now, all the iPhone models support e-SIM and come with a nano-SIM slot as well for physical SIM cards. Apple might be able to offer better water resistance on its iPhones if the SIM card slot is removed. It would also give the company more space to add in few extra things to its smartphone's design. If you are in India, you don't have to worry as all the private telecom operators, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), offer e-SIM cards to customers. If the report is indeed true, Apple might become one of the first major smartphone companies to go only the e-SIM route, and this might motivate the other smartphone companies to do the same. Take this news with a pinch of salt as nothing's confirmed by Apple yet. |

| HFCL Included as Trusted Source in India for Telecom by NSCS Posted: 28 Dec 2021 12:20 AM PST
HFCL Limited has confirmed that it has received the nod from the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) to supply telecom equipment and products to the telcos in India as a trusted source. HFCL is one of the few companies that has been able to secure a nod from the NSCS for supplying telecom equipment in India. Mahendra Nahata, HFCL Promoter and Managing Director, said the company is delighted to receive approval from NSCS and be recognised as a trusted source. The company is fully committed to serving the telecom service providers (TSP) with its wide range of services and products, added Nahata. NSCS Nod to Cement HFCL's Position in Indian Telecom MarketSecuring a nod from NSCS will cement HFCL's position in the Indian Telecom market and amplify the growth opportunities for the company. According to a PTI report, HFCL has emerged as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of several range of products such as Wi-Fi routers, Point-to-Point radios in various frequency bands, and more. The biggest plus point for HFCL is its move of manufacturing the products in India. Nahata said that the NSCS nod had reinforced the company's commitment to delivering make in India products and solutions. HFCL recently forayed into the development of 5G transport and radio products based on Open RAN standards which are expected to be the basic standard for future telecom stacks. HFCL is manufacturing in India but not limiting itself to only helping Indian telcos but also the global telecom players. For the unaware, NSCS is the designated body that will approve all the gear and equipment that will be included in the future networks of the telecom operators in India. Telcos are not allowed to source equipment from a company that is not included in the trusted sources by NSCS. This is to ensure that all the future networks in India are secure for the users and that national security is not in any harm's way. Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE have been kept out of the trusted list. |

| Airtel, TCS Test Neural Manufacturing Solutions on 5G Network Posted: 27 Dec 2021 10:17 PM PST
Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator, has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a major IT firm and both the companies are working on building a 5G based remote working technology using robotics. According to a release, the companies have tested two 5G use cases together on a 5G test bed created by Bharti Airtel. These use cases include remote manufacturing operations using robotics and vision-based quality inspection. This partnership with TCS would enable Bharti Airtel in coming out with indigenous 5G products and services. Airtel, TCS Solutions to Help ManufacturersThe solutions developed by Airtel and TCS will help manufacturers in building smart factories which mimic adaptive and resilient behaviours. Bharti Airtel and TCS are interested in deploying the robotics solutions developed together once 5G is rolled out commercially in India. Both the companies had already joined hands together in June for developing 5G network solutions for India. This partnership was Airtel's move to compete with Jio in developing indigenous 5G solutions and products. Bharti Airtel will pilot and deploy the indigenously developed telecom stack by TCS for 5G. The telecom stack developed by the Tata Group is made with O-RAN (Open Radio Access Network)-based radio and core elements. Airtel had announced that it would start deploying the O-RAN telecom stack developed by TCS from January 2022. That seems unlikely as of now since the government is taking its sweet time with the spectrum auctions. Bharti Airtel has been very supportive of the O-RAN technology as it is very cost-efficient. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently working on the fresh base pricing for the spectrum bands that will be included in the upcoming spectrum auctions. The spectrum auctions are likely to take place in April to June 2022 period. Even the telecom operators are expected to finish the 5G trials by the summer of 2022. There are a lot of uncertainties when it comes to the 5G launch in India, as a lot of policy decisions around the network technology are pending. |
| India Won’t be Locked Out of Global 5G, 5Gi Merger with 3GPP Confirmed Posted: 27 Dec 2021 09:09 PM PST
At the recently concluded TSG Radio Access Network (TSG RAN) 3GPP Plenary Meeting, 3GPP decided to merge India's own 5th generation standard 5Gi with 3GPP's global 5G standard. 3GPP and TSDSI also set a plan of action and milestones to allow the merger of 5Gi into 5G. India gained approval from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for the country's own standards on 5G technology in August 2021. Dubbed as 5Gi standards, it primarily targets expanding 5G coverage across rural India using a feature called Low Mobility Large Cell (LMLC), which can enhance the signal transmission range of a base station for a telecom service provider. As per the plan of action, the 3GPP will endorse the two Rel-17 Change Requests (CRs), clarifying the specification of the Pi/2-BPSK modulation scheme, which supports a low peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) transmissions. Besides, the RAN WG4-led Rel-17 work item's objectives and a way forward for the same project are changed. TSDSI, on the other hand, has pledged to combine 5Gi into 3GPP and to pursue merged 3GPP 5G specifications in India, with no further 5Gi changes in ITU-R. According to a statement released by 3GPP, the organizations that develop the protocol for mobile telecommunications will approve the CRs currently endorsed and be implemented into 3GPP Rel-17 NR specifications as soon as TSDI completes its side of actions. As per an ET Telecom report, the merger will facilitate 3GPP to support all markets with a single solution that will permit 5G to evolve globally. 5Gi is India's first-ever presence in influencing global communication standards5Gi is the first-ever involvement of India in influencing international communication standards, which were previously dominated by Europe, the United States, and, more recently, China. When the engineers and scientists at the Indian Institute of Technological first established the 5Gi standards, they envisioned it as a domestic standard that would bridge the urban-rural divide in technology accessible for the future 5G launch. While the ITU has given its approval, the 3GPP's approval is required for widespread adoption of the 5Gi standards. ITU, a.k.a., the International Telecommunications Union, is a UN body tasked with overseeing all aspects of information and communication technologies. |
| Vodafone Idea Needs to Comply With New TRAI Order for MNP: TDSAT Posted: 27 Dec 2021 08:15 PM PST
Vodafone Idea (Vi) had appealed against the new Mobile Number Portability (MNP) order rolled out by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). However, in its ruling, TDSAT has stayed TRAI's order and asked Vodafone Idea to comply with the order. At the same time, the appellate tribunal said that the issue requires consideration; regardless, Vi can't go against the order of TRAI. According to an ET Telecom report, Vodafone Idea now might move to the Supreme Court against TDSAT's order. Vodafone Idea Doesn't Want Customers Without SMS Benefits to be able to Port OutVodafone Idea already offers the most expensive prepaid plan with SMS benefits. Not just that, but its move against TRAI's order shows that the telco doesn't want its customers without SMS benefits to be able to port out of the network. Vi is desperate to hold on to its active users. This is because it has the least of them compared to Jio and Airtel. Both Jio and Airtel had complained to TRAI that Vi is restricting low-end plan users to port out from the network by offering very expensive SMS bundled prepaid plans. The TRAI had then asked all the operators to allow users to be able to send port out SMSes to 1900 even if they did not have an active SMS pack or a prepaid plan that offered SMS benefits. This has irked Vodafone Idea as it creates the risk of losing millions of low-end users who might want to shift to Jio's networks because of lower tariffs. All the consumers across different telecom circles would have gotten a huge relief when they heard about TRAI's order. But Vodafone Idea doesn't want it to happen this way. 5G networks are going to become more and more common as years go by. 2022 is the year when India should see its first live commercial 5G network. But the thing is, because of network rollout costs, the telcos can't just launch 5G in every part of India. They need to launch 5G in cities where there are not just a ton of normal consumers but also enterprises and multinational companies that can help with reaching the break-even point first. Most of the cities where the 5G trials are going on will definitely receive live 5G networks in 2022. 13 Cities That Will See 5G Networks in 2022According to an ANI report, 5G in India will arrive for these 13 cities first — Kolkata, Bangalore, Gurugram, Pune, Gandhinagar, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, and Jamnagar. Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have been conducting their 5G trials in these cities. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Monday confirmed that these metros and big cities would receive live commercial 5G networks first. There wasn't any fixed time frame given by the telecom department, but it is most likely that India will see live 5G networks in the third quarter of CY22. Even the DoT has been working with the indigenous 5G testbed since 2018. The test is likely to complete by the end of 2021. Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman said hopefully, the first 5G test bed will be rolled out in early January, which will give the small and medium enterprises as well as other parts of different industries to come and their 5G solutions. The 5G test bed will further put India in a strong position in terms of conducting initial research for 6G and related technologies. The Indian telecom operators, including Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, have been conducting 5G trials in different parts of the countries using the spectrum allocated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). |

| BSNL Sub Rs 400 Prepaid Plans Best if Backed by 4G Networks Posted: 27 Dec 2021 06:33 AM PST
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) offers some of the best-prepaid plans to users. The state-run telco right now lacks the support of 4G networks. If BSNL had already live 4G networks, its prepaid plans would be heavily subscribed. Just to compare, BSNL offers the cheapest prepaid tariffs amongst all the telecom operators in India. Even compared to Jio, which is the private operator offering the best tariff plans to users, BSNL's plans are significantly cheaper. BSNL Rs 398 Plan an Example of What the Telco Can OfferThe Rs 398 prepaid plan from BSNL is just an example of what the state-run telco can offer to consumers. If you are someone who doesn't spend big bucks on his/her prepaid plans, BSNL can be the top choice for you. Once again, the only issue that would come for you is that there is no support for 4G connectivity. BSNL is the fourth-ranked operator in terms of subscriber market share, and the sole reason is the lack of 4G. The state-run telco is currently working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on 4G trials and is expected to launch PAN-India 4G networks by the end of 2022. While it is very late for the telco to capitalise on the 4G networks as 5G would have been arrived by then, it will at least pave the way for itself to move on to 5G upgrades in the future. Further, a Made in India 4G network is something that the telco can brand heavily to attract hardcore India lovers on its networks. While the other operators are moving ahead with 5G, BSNL can attract 4G users by offering some of the cheapest tariffs in the industry. Just to note, there's no other operator offering a prepaid plan like the Rs 398 plan from BSNL. For the unaware, BSNL's Rs 398 plan offers consumers truly unlimited data without any restrictions. |
