Vivo Might Bring a Smartphone With Expandable Display

Vivo

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo might bring a smartphone with an expandable display in the future. It is possible because of the patent application that the company has filed at the World Intellectual Property Organisation.

According to 91mobiles, the patent was filed back in May 2021 and was published on December 2, 2021. The patent images shared by the publication suggest that the smartphone that Vivo is working on could have an expandable display.

As per the images, the display could be enlarged by expanding the camera side of the body sidewards. This is not the newest technology or concept. Oppo has already shown what it can do with expandable displays. But it is interesting nonetheless because expandable displays are still not a common thing. Even Oppo hasn't launched a commercial device in the market with an expandable display but only demoed what it can do with it.

Reading Documents, Watching Videos, Everything Might be More Fun With Vivo's Expected Smartphone With Expandable Display

People who like to do almost everything on their smartphones, including tasks such as reading documents, watching videos, recording clips for video editing, and more, will find this expected Vivo device very cool.

The patent details shared by 91Mobiles suggest that mostly the expandable screen would open through an automatic trigger. But the company might also allow the consumers to open the additional screen manually whenever they want.

According to the patented design, the USB Type-C port is on the side of the body while the speaker grille is at the top. The smartphone also has a punch-hole cut-out housing the selfie camera on the top right of the screen.

There's no timeline for the launch of the smartphone. This is because its patent was published only now and there have been no official talks about the device by the company. But since there's competition, smartphone companies would want to fast-track the process to be the first to launch a smartphone with an expandable display.

Starlink Aims to Have 200K Terminals in India by December 2022

Starlink

Starlink India is planning to apply for the commercial license on or before January 31, 2022. The satellite communications (satcom) company has prepared two guides for the same. One guide is for the individuals and private sector while the other one is for the state and union territories, wrote Sanjay Bhargava, Starlink India Head, on his LinkedIn post on Friday.

The company is planning to have up to 200K terminals in India by December 2022, which is 12 months or a year from now. The satcom company is working towards getting a commercial license, but there are unknowns.

Starlink Commercial Launch in India Might be Delayed Due to Unknowns

There is always the factor of unknowns in a business. This is what Bhargava wrote in his post as well. Unless there's a major roadblock in the company's plans, it will apply for the commercial license on or before January 31, 2021.

As of now, if everything goes according to the plan, Starlink India will be able to commence commercial rollout by April 2022. Further, the company aims to have up to 200K terminals by the end of 2022.

Bhargava wrote that there are unknowns on when the customers will get the delivery of their Starlink.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently asked Starlink to block selling pre-bookings from their website in India. Because the company had no regulatory license, it doesn't have the right of selling pre-bookings in the country. Starlink was selling pre-bookings in India for $99 (approximately Rs 7,500).

In November, the company also rolled out an apology email to the customers in which it said that the customers should not be worried as they will definitely get their order. The company has already launched its services in over 20 countries after first launching in the United States in 2020.

Starlink said that the delays in order shipment have occurred due to the silicone shortage over the last few months.

Jio Offering the Most Expensive Prepaid Plan Amongst all Telcos

Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio, the telecom operator with the largest subscriber base in India is often looked at as the company offering the cheapest services. Jio's prepaid plans have been largely popular in the Indian market because of the affordability they bring to the table. However, after the tariff hikes, it doesn't look that way anymore. While most of Jio's prepaid plans are still cheaper and more affordable than what its rivals are offering including Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel, Jio is also offering the most expensive prepaid plan in the market.

The plan that we are talking about comes for Rs 4199. This is currently the most expensive prepaid plan that Jio is offering amongst all the private telcos.

Reliance Jio Rs 4199 Prepaid Plan

Reliance Jio is offering a prepaid plan that costs Rs 4199. This plan is available for users across India and can be seen on both the mobile application and the website of the telco. Reliance Jio's Rs 4199 prepaid plan offers 3GB of daily data to the users.

But that is not all. The other major thing about this plan is that it carries a service validity of 365 days or 1-year. This plan also bundles unlimited voice calling, 100 SMS/day and access to multiple Jio applications without any additional cost. The Jio applications include JioCinema, JioTV, JioCloud, and JioSecurity.

The total amount of data that this plan offers is 1095GB. Post the consumption of the fair-usage-policy (FUP) data, users will have to continue browsing the internet with 64 Kbps speed. The FUP data resets after every 24 hours (midnight).

There is no other operator who is offering such an expensive prepaid plan to the users. It will be interesting to see what Airtel comes up with; in this area. Bharti Airtel is currently not offering 3GB daily data plans with medium or long-term validity. But these plans should arrive soon in the company's prepaid offerings with a revised price.

COAI Says Intra Circle Roaming to Help Cyclone Affected Users

COAI

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has issued a statement according to which intra circle roaming will be started to ensure that mobile phone users can switch between the telecom service providers (TSPs) if their primary or native service provider is affected.

COAI is an industry body that represents all the private telecom operators in India, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea.

The industry body said that it is working closely with the infrastructure providers (IPs), local state authorities, and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to mitigate the impact of cyclone JAWAD on India's telecom networks.

TSPs Have Deployed Additional Cell on Wheels (CoW) for Supporting Telecom Sites

S P Kochhar, DG, COAI, said the telecom operators have deployed additional Cell on Wheels (CoW) to ensure that networks stay live. During cyclones, network and site damage is a common occurrence, and thus CoW will help with keeping people connected during difficult times.

Further, COAI confirmed that the TSPs and their original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have deployed extra workforce to speed up the work of protecting and restoring the telecom infrastructure.

The telecom sites will run without the presence of grid supply with the help of backup batteries and diesel so that connectivity services can continue seamlessly. The COAI and its members are working to ensure that all the network services can be restored across the coastal districts of Orissa, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh (AP) at the earliest.

Due to the cyclone, multiple telecom sites must have been damaged, and with the extra workforce on the field, TSPs and the OEMs can work faster to bring the regular networks back to life. Connectivity in today's age has become of prime importance, and that is why speedy recovery of networks is necessary to ensure that people don't feel disconnected from the outside world.

COAI further said that it is working in close coordination with the NDMA and their teams to help with the situation.
