| TRAI Data Shows 7.29 Million MNP Requests in October 2021 Posted: 20 Dec 2021 10:53 PM PST
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday released its monthly performance report for the telecom sector, which revealed that a total of 7.29 million MNP requests were made during October 2021. Out of the total MNP requests, 4.20 million requests were made in Zone-1, and the other 3.09 million requests came from Zone-2. For the unaware, Zone-1 is Northern and Western India while Zone-2 is Southern and Eastern India. Maharashtra Has the Highest MNP Requests Till DateMaharashtra, one of the most heavily populated states of the country present in the Zone-1, has the highest number of MNP requests recorded to date. A total of 53.36 million MNP requests have been made in Maharashtra so far. In Zone-1, the second region having the highest number of MNP requests is Uttar Pradesh-East (UP-East), which has seen around 47.24 million MNP requests being made. In Zone-2, Karnataka has the highest number of MNP requests made to date (about 50.89 million), followed by Andhra Pradesh (about 49.12 million). The Intra-service area Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was first implemented in the Haryana service area from November 25, 2010, and in the rest of the country from January 20, 2011. Since then, a total of 645.54 million MNP requests have been made. Out of this, 305.98 million MNP requests were made in the Zone-1, and 309.07 Map requests were made in Zone-2. With the MNP system in place, wireless telephone subscribers can retain their mobile numbers when they relocate from one service area to another. They can also retain their current mobile numbers in case they are porting out to another telecom network provider in the same service area. As compared to September 2021 (about 10.10 million MNP requests), in October 2021 (about 7.29 million MNP requests), lesser MNP requests were made, which is a healthy sign for the telecom sector. However, post the tariff hikes, the number of MNP requests should grow signficantly. |
| Airtel Keeps Significant Lead Over Jio, Vi in VLR Subscribers in October Posted: 20 Dec 2021 09:38 PM PST
Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in the country, has retained its lead over Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) when it comes to VLR subscribers or active subscribers in October 2021. Airtel had 346.11 million active subscribers out of its total subscriber base of 353.98 million, which equates to 97.78% of the telco's subscriber base has been active. According to the monthly performance report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Airtel's arch-rival, Reliance Jio, had 358.49 million active subscribers out of its total subscriber base of 426.60 million. This equates to over 84.03% of Jio's subscriber base being active. Coming to the third private telecom operator, Vodafone Idea (Vi) had 234.33 million active subscribers out of its total subscriber base of 269.03 million, imputing that 87.10% of its subscribers were active. Reliance Jio's Active Subscribers Percentage Grew SignificantlyAirtel and Vodafone Idea's VLR subscriber percentage didn't move much, but Jio has seen a significant gain in the last few months. This is primarily because the telco scraped off some of the inactive numbers from its user base in the September quarter. The increase in the percentage of VLR subscribers would help Reliance Jio in increasing its average revenue per user (ARPU) figure. All the telcos would want their active subscribers to grow each month that goes by. This improves their ARPU ultimately resulting in a higher ARPU. Bharti Airtel has always had better VLR subscriber percentage than Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Reliance Jio. Airtel's VLR users are close to its active user base. This is something that Jio has never been able to beat Airtel in. However, Jio is closing in on Vodafone Idea and this is something that the third-largest private telecom operator in India needs to keep a close eye at. Vodafone Idea needs more 4G users at a faster rate to improve ARPU further after the tariff hikes. |
