Apple to Bring Two New iPhone SE Models Over Next Two Years

Posted: 08 Dec 2021 02:05 AM PST

Apple iPhone SE Launch Timeline

The recent rumours suggest that Cupertino-based tech giant Apple might be bringing in two new models of iPhone SE over the next couple of years. The rumours have been suggested by known TF securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who further went on to explain that Apple has two iPhone SE models lined up for the years 2022 and 2023. According to a report from MacRumors, the explanation from Kuo was seen on a note to investors.

Details on the Devices

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the first model of Apple's iPhone SE will be launched somewhere in the first half of 2022 and will feature 3GB of memory. The second model, on the other hand, will be launched in 2023 and is anticipated to have some major changes which could include a larger display screen and 4GB of memory. Predictions from Kuo match with the overabundance of rumours already available on the internet regarding iPhone SE models.

Ross Young who is a display analyst also said that Apple might be bringing in a new iPhone SE model in 2022 which is currently in the works and will be a 4.7-inch device with 5G connectivity. He further said that this model will be followed by another iPhone SE model arriving in 2024 that will feature 5.7 inches – 6.1 inches LCD display. Ross Young said in a statement that the original date for the second model of iPhone SE was somewhere in 2023 but was pushed to 2024. However, reports from Kuo suggest that the device is still on for the 2023 launch.

Other speculations on the device have suggested that the larger iPhone SE model will be somewhat similar to iPhone XR in terms of design. It would mean that the handset will have a hole-punch front-facing camera design and would be Apple's last iPhone with an LCD display. The 2022 model of the iPhone SE, however, is expected to retain the design it has currently and will still have 4.7 inches of display but will add 5G connectivity. Although it still remains to be seen that whether the device will feature an A14 or A15 chipset.

Additionally, it has been reported earlier that Apple is looking to increase the shipping of various products hugely next year. It is already working on new products and upgrading the existing products. It was also reported that Apple is eyeing to increase its iPhone shipment in the first half of 2022 by around 30% as compared to that in the first half of 2021.

Telcos Must Collaborate, Share Infra Costs: Mittal

Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:32 AM PST

Sunil Bharti mittal

The telecom sector of India is one of the most ruthless places for private companies to be in. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has been attached to the sector for decades now. Speaking at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2021, Mittal said that while it is important to fight really hard to gain new customers, the companies must also learn to collaborate together. Mittal said that there's a lot of duplication in the industry, be it mobile towers or fiber, and thus the telcos can share tower infrastructure with each other going forward.

This would essentially reduce the costs for network rollout for the operators. At the same, the operators will be able to roll out new services faster.

India Has Very Affordable Tariffs, Thus Higher ARPU and Lower Costs Needed

Mittal said that sharing tower infrastructure would reduce the overall cost for network rollout for the operators. This is great for a country like India, where the tariffs are very affordable, and the average revenue per user (ARPU) is very low. In simple words, the operators have to make huge investments to onboard customers, but their earnings out of each customer are too low at the moment.

Thus by working together and collaborating, the telcos can reduce the network rollout cost, which is essential to them since their profit margins are not big.

Mittal said that he is very excited about the digital space and the telecom sector of India. The country has over a billion broadband users, and that is why people are already investing on their feet in the Indian telecom sector, added Mittal.

This is not the first time Mittal has asked the sector to come together. Earlier as well, that too multiple times, Mittal has suggested that telcos should learn to work together and not just focus on undercutting each other to gain a larger market share.

Telecom Companies Want AGR to be Redefined Further: Report

Posted: 08 Dec 2021 12:41 AM PST

telecom companies

The adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues have been the hot topic of the entire telecom industry in India for the last few years. The telcos had waged and lost a battle against the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for redefining the AGR. The government, though listened carefully to the sector's wishes and changed the definition of the AGR dues as part of the relief measures announced recently. The DoT will not include non-telecom revenues in the AGR, so the dues for the telcos would be lower. However, according to an FE report, the telcos want the government to further look at the AGR's definition.

Don't Include OTT Revenues in AGR Dues

The telecom operators have asked the government to not include revenues generated from the over-the-top (OTT) platforms as well as handset sales. Then there are more things such as mobile advertising services, and more.

The basic point of the telcos is that all the revenues that are generated without using the licensed spectrum should not be included in AGR for paying spectrum usage charges (SUC). There are more services and areas through which a telco earns revenues, such as leased circuits, wireline calling services, port charges, bandwidth services, infrastructure sharing charges, and more than the telcos don't want to be included.

The AGR dues and its interest accrued over the long-term can derail a telco's operations. This was the case with Vodafone Idea (Vi) as well. But because of the relief measures, the older dues aren't affecting the telcos that much. However, the telcos don't want to be in such a position again where they have to pay dues and interest on revenues that should not be included in AGR. The operators want the format of the AGR to change, which is currently designed according to the circle/license. This could be a part of the second set of relief measures that are announced for the telecom industry.

Convert India to 5G From 2G/4G at Earliest: Mukesh Ambani

Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:34 PM PST

2G to 5G

India should focus on covering the 2G and 4G users to 5G at the earliest, said Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). Speaking at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2021, Ambani said that keeping millions of Indians at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid confined to 2G is depriving them of the digital revolution. According to the Indian business tycoon, the rollout of 5G networks should be the topmost priority of India. Ambani further said that Jio's future proof network could be easily and quickly converted from 4G to 5G.

USOF Should be Tapped into For Subsidising Devices for Select Groups

There are many people who can't purchase smartphones or other connectivity devices because they can't afford them. That is why Ambani has called for tapping into the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) to subsidise devices for select target groups. This will ensure that people, even at the low-income levels, can be a part of India's digital revolution.

It is not just the services that need to become affordable, but also the devices in the hands of the users. Further, Ambani said that India needs to focus on expanding fiber coverage as fast as possible. Ambani said that if all the players in the industry work together, India can rapidly achieve a nationwide footprint of broadband coverage.

Lastly, Ambani said that there's a need for a radical transformation of India's energy systems. Clean and green energy at low costs will be required to fuel the technology in the coming years. While connectivity is important to focus on, one must not forget about the critical components of the digital ecosystem.

During the COVID-19 times, Jio was able to introduce fiber connectivity to over five million homes in India. To be future-ready, India needs to have a nationwide broadband footprint as it has almost unlimited data carriage capacity. But it will require everyone in the industry to pitch in.

Bharti Airtel Takes a Big Step Towards Broadband Expansion in India

Posted: 07 Dec 2021 10:53 PM PST

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel, one of the leading private telecommunications companies in India, has taken a big step towards expanding broadband coverage in India. Juniper Networks has just announced that it will be partnering with Bharti Airtel to help the telco in reaching more areas of India with broadband services. Bharti Airtel has built a strong FTTH presence in India with its sub-brand Airtel Xstream Fiber. The telco has already reached over 430 towns in the country. Airtel further plans to reach over 2,000 cities in India, covering 30 million households with broadband coverage in the next two years.

Juniper Networks to Upgrade Airtel's Broadband Network

The partnership between both companies will see Juniper Networks taking charge of supplying, installing, and providing support for upgrades to the MX Series routers and line cards. Juniper Networks will also ensure that with its broadband network gateway (BNG), Airtel's subscribers and services are managed in the most efficient manner. Juniper will further provide Airtel with carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) solutions for ensuring that secure encryption across the telco's network is maintained.

Juniper and Bharti Airtel have a long-standing relationship of 15 years. Juniper will be helping Airtel with network transformation and support with developing 5G use cases as well and not just be limited to help with FTTH broadband services expansion.

Airtel Xstream Fiber has already become a prominent brand in India. Airtel's broadband networks are also used by corporates, and the telco has specially curated a set of broadband plans for enterprise customers. Thus the expansion of broadband network would further allow Bharti Airtel to grow its enterprise business across the country.

The telco offers broadband plans ranging from 40 Mbps speed to 1 Gbps. All of Airtel's fiber broadband plans offer users unlimited data (3.3TB). The partnership with Juniper should enable Airtel into expanding broadband coverage aggressively in the coming years.

The global tech market has been suffering from the chip shortage around the world and so is the smartphone industry. The worldwide shortage of chips has already led to repercussions as many of the smartphones scheduled to launch have been postponed and many of those have been cancelled as well. For the pre-existing smartphones in the market, it is more than likely that the manufacturers have opted to increase the price tag. The prefatory smartphone from Realme – Realme C21Y is the latest device to join the long list of smartphones the prices of which have been hiked. Bharti Airtel Postpaid Customers Won’t be Budged by Tariff Hikes

Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:12 PM PST

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in the country, is popular for providing postpaid services. The telco is especially popular in the corporate world for offering uniform postpaid mobile services across India. With the prepaid tariff hikes already implemented, there's no way that the telcos aren't already planning on increasing the postpaid tariffs as well. It is only a matter of when it will happen.

But largely, Bharti Airtel's postpaid customers won't be budged by the tariff hikes that might arrive in the near future. In fact, it might be the same case with Vodafone Idea customers.

Airtel Has 50% to 60% of Postpaid Customers in Corporates

As mentioned above, Bharti Airtel is very famous in the corporate world for providing postpaid mobile services. According to an FE report, 50% to 60% of Airtel's total postpaid customers work in corporates. With such a large percentage of users being enterprise customers, Airtel is in a good position to increase tariffs.

Enterprises don't care a lot about the money they are paying for mobile postpaid services as long as they can get a strong service against it. Enterprises are always after quality and seamless experience because it affects their work. So even if Airtel goes with a 10% to 20% tariff hike with its postpaid plans, there will not be many issues as long as it can provide quality services against it.

Postpaid Customers Don't Really Care Much About Expense

Postpaid customers, in general, are more accepting of higher tariffs. They already pay twice or thrice of what a prepaid customer pays. This is because postpaid plans allow them to get premium service from the telcos.

Bharti Airtel already has the highest average revenue per user (ARPU) amongst all the private telcos in India. The telco will require a substantial revenue boost to reach Rs 200 ARPU levels. This means that postpaid plans need to get more expensive.

Postpaid customers, much like corporate or enterprise customers, care more about the kind of service they are getting instead of the money they are paying.

Airtel and Vodafone Idea would be in a good position to go with postpaid tariff hikes as both the telcos have enterprise customers as well.

Ultimately, the telcos are eyeing to reach Rs 300 ARPU levels. This will not be possible with just one tariff hike. In the coming years, multiple tariff hikes will make their way to the market, and both prepaid, as well as postpaid plans, will become much more expensive than they cost today.

2G/3G users would also fade away in the coming years, which will further mean an ARPU boost for the telcos. While the telcos have not hinted anything regarding the postpaid tariff hikes, it is highly unlikely that they are not working on it already. The more the telcos will wait, the more their business will hurt, which doesn't make sense.

The telecom operators will be looking to reach the 2016 ARPU levels, which was over Rs 200, in the near future.

TRAI Follows DoT in Ordering Starlink to Stop Selling Pre-Bookings

Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:21 PM PST

TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has sent a letter to Starlink asking the SpaceX owned satellite broadband company to stop selling pre-bookings in India. As per an ET report, the regulator has said that due to not having necessary approvals and licenses, the company shouldn't engage in any sort of telecom business and collect any related fee from the Indian consumers.

The timing of the letter is a little odd as the company had already stopped selling pre-bookings a few days back after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) order.

Starlink in Process to Get Necessary Approvals

Sanjay Bhargava, India Head, Starlink, wrote in a LinkedIn post that the company is in the process to apply for the regulatory approvals necessary in India. Bhargava said that Starlink will submit a license to sell in India before or by January 31, 2022. If no roadblock comes and everything goes according to the plan, Starlink will start selling commercial services by April 2022. Further, the company plans on having over 200K Starlink terminals in India by December 2022.

Starlink had been selling a pre-booking in India for $99 or approximately Rs 7,500. The company had confirmed that it had already sold over 5000 plus connections in India. Starlink plans on starting commercial services by mid-2022.

The company has explained the benefits and uses of a Starlink connection and also asked the state governments and union territories to tap into the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) corpus for funding the purchase and installation of Starlink terminals in the first year for making their states 100% covered with broadband.

Starlink can provide internet services in the remotest regions of India as long as there are no interruptions to the signals that are coming from the satellite. The first-year cost for purchasing and installing a Starlink connection is estimated to be Rs 1,58,000, which is sort of unfeasible for an average consumer.

Jio, Airtel, Vi Users Can Now Port Out With Any Prepaid Plan

Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:55 PM PST

Jio, Airtel, Vi

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) had made their prepaid plans with SMS benefits quite expensive. Users had to pay a substantial amount of money to buy a prepaid plan with SMS benefits just to be able to port out. But the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has changed that now. Telecom operators can no longer stop users from porting out with low-end prepaid plans. While the users still can't send SMS with the low-end prepaid plans, they can now send port out SMS at least. Prepaid plans that do not offer SMS benefits will still allow users to send port out SMS to 1900.

Reliance Jio Had Complained to TRAI for Expensive SMS Plan from Vi

After the tariff hikes kicked in, Vodafone Idea made its minimum SMS bundled prepaid plan cost Rs 179 for the users. At the same time, Jio and Airtel offered their minimum SMS plans for Rs 155 and Rs 128.

Looking at this, Jio had complained to TRAI last week that Vi's plans are restricting low-end plan users from porting out to other networks. Thanks to that complaint, all users will now be able to send port out to SMS to 1900 even if they are using a prepaid plan that doesn't offer SMS benefits.

How to Port Out?

Start with sending an SMS to 1900 texting 'PORT' followed by a space and the 10 digits mobile number you have. You will then receive a port out code. Then choose the operator you want to port out to — go to its retail store, fill out a porting form and mention the valid port out code. Submit all the necessary documents, make payments if necessary, and complete the KYC process. This is all that a user needs to do for porting out and it is a good thing that TRAI has amended the rules and now allowing all users to send port out SMS at least.

Airtel, BSNL, Jio, Excitel Broadband Plans for Students

Broadband Plans for Students

The demand for home internet has risen manifold in recent times whether it is for streaming and gaming, work from home, online learning or small businesses. ISPs (Internet Service Providers) provide a huge variety of broadband plans that are curated to meet the needs of the targeted user base. Since the beginning of the pandemic, students across the country have become dependent on the internet for almost all of their learning. Major ISPs of the country provide their respective low-cost broadband plans that are suited for students in terms of affordability as well as performance. Mentioned below are the plans that students looking for inexpensive broadband plans can opt for.

Airtel's "Basic Plan"

Airtel using its Fibernet technology provides high-speed internet of up to 1 Gbps. With Airtel Xstream Fiber the users are in for a better, enhanced, faster and seamless internet experience across multiple devices as it provides a Fiber optic internet connection. Airtel Provides a lot of options while choosing a broadband plan, however, students can get access to the 'Basic' pack which provides 40 Mbps of internet speed at a monthly cost of Rs 499 exclusive of taxes.

Users get 3.3TB or 3300GB of monthly fair-usage-policy (FUP) data with this plan. Airtel also provides 'Airtel Thanks Benefits' with its broadband plans which in this case includes a subscription to Wynk Music and Shaw Academy.

100 Mbps Plan from Excitel

Excitel provides broadband connectivity only with 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps or 300 Mbps of internet speed. Thus, the 100 Mbps plan is the cheapest plan students can go for and the monthly cost becomes much less if the users opt for the annual plan. The 100 Mbps plan from Excitel comes at different price tags and durations so as to cater to user convenience.

The Fiber First from Excitel provides users with a 100 Mbps plan for a month at Rs 699. Users can also avail of the plan for 3 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months for Rs 565, Rs 508, Rs 490, Rs 424 and Rs 399 respectively. However, the 9-month plan is available for only new subscribers to the service. Moreover, the plans from Excitel are truly unlimited and no FUP data limit is levied upon.

30 Mbps Plan from JioFiber

JioFiber provides a 30 Mbps internet speed data plan at the price of Rs 399 per month. The FUP limit set on this plan is 3300Gb or 3.3TB. Using the 30 Mbps plan from JioFiber, students can get access to smooth and seamless internet across multiple devices. Along with high-speed internet, users also get a symmetrical download and upload speed from the provider. This is rather one of the cheaper plans from the ISP and hence it doesn't include subscriptions to any OTT platform like the higher-priced plans from JioFiber, however, it is one of the better options when users are looking for cost-effective plans.

Two Cost-Effective Plans from BSNL

The government-owned telecommunications company BSNL under Bharat Fibre Broadband provides exciting plans for students who want pocket-friendly options with adequate internet speed. The 'Fibre Basic' and 'Fibre Basic Plus' plans from BSNL provides 30 Mbps and 60 Mbps of internet speed respectively. The Fibre Basic plan comes at a price of Rs 449 per month whereas the Fibre Basic Plus costs users Rs 599 a month.

Both these prices are exclusive of GST and both these plans come with an FUP limit of 3300GB or 3.3TB. Beyond the data limit, users can enjoy an internet speed of 2 Mbps and both these plans also offer a 90% discount of up to Rs 500 on rent on the first bill.

Vodafone Idea Demonstrates Network Slicing Over 5G SA

Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:17 AM PST

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has just announced that it partnered with Nokia to demonstrate network slicing over the 5G standalone (SA) network. The telco used Nokia's 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) and 5G core to go make this demonstration possible. Vodafone Idea conducted this demonstration in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The telco used the 5G spectrum allocated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Network Slicing Will Allow Vodafone Idea to Open New Revenue Streams

With this successful demonstration of network slicing over the 5G SA network, the telco will be able to quickly add new revenue streams. Network slicing is a use case that will be heavily in demand by large enterprises that want to keep their data secure. Vodafone Idea will now be able to cater to these demands.

During this demonstration, two network slices were created. The first network slice was meant for the general data traffic, and the second slice was established for high speed and extremely low latency.

Vi said that without the second network slice, virtual reality (VR) content achieved a lower resolution delivering an average user experience. With the network slicing, Vi said the user experience improved and allowed them to view high-resolution VR content.

For the unaware, with network slicing, the telcos can create multiple virtual networks over the same physical network. Using this technology, operators can create virtual networks and configure their speed, performance, bandwidth, and latency for offering personalised and differentiated services. This is something that a lot of enterprises will need going forward.

Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Vodafone Idea, said network slicing will open up new opportunities for the enterprise customers to gain new competencies and efficiencies from 5G powered use cases.

Vodafone Idea said that it would be demonstrating network slicing again on its 5G network at the Indian Mobile Congress 2021. The telco has been conducting 5G trials with Nokia in Gandhinagar, Gujarat and with Ericsson in Pune, Maharashtra.

Apple Eyeing to Increase its iPhone Shipment by 30% Next Year Amid Global Chip Shortage

Apple to Increase iPhone Production

As per the recent reports, sources from the South Korean component industry have claimed that Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is eyeing to increase its iPhone shipment in the first half of 2022 by around 30% as compared to that in the first half of 2021. This would mean that the company is planning to achieve the annual shipment target of 300 million units. It would be interesting to see how the company achieves this feat when there is a global chip shortage that has been impacting the shipment of all the tech companies.

Apple All Set to Boost its Production

According to the sources, Apple has set a target of shipping 170 million units of iPhone in the first half of 2022, which is almost 30% higher than 130 million units sold in 2021. It has been claimed that the tech giant has asked various component companies to adapt to the supply and demand chain in order to increase the annual shipments of iPhone next year.

The popularity of Apple's latest iPhone 13 has been touching the skies. The latest smartphone is in high demand in the global market, including North America, but due to the worldwide chip shortage, the supply has been lacking. Apple's initiative to bring a spike in production should resolve the issue of insufficient supply of iPhones.

It seems like Apple has been on its toes in order to grow and expand its portfolio. As reported earlier, Apple has been working on a wide range of devices, and device updates, including its flagship iPhone and iPhone 14, will be arriving next year as well. It is also in speculation that an iPhone SE model might be in the works, which are anticipated to operate on the latest A-series chipset and have 5G network connectivity.

Other than smartphones, the tech giant is also working on devices such as AirPods Pro, which probably will have a new model in 2022, considering the fact that the current one is quite outdated. In addition to this, Apple is also working on introducing a completely redesigned MacBook Air in 2022, which might be the biggest design change the product has ever received. The new version of MacBook Air is being speculated to come with a new design language and an M2 chipset.

It will be interesting to see that how the spike in production of iPhones and other products by Cupertino-based tech giant helps it to leave its mark in the global tech industry.
