| Prepaid Monthly ARPU for Telecom Sector Grew in September 2021 Quarter: TRAI Posted: 10 Jan 2022 04:18 AM PST
The telecom sector's monthly prepaid average revenue per user (ARPU) showed a significant improvement in the September quarter. From Rs 99 in the quarter ending June 2021, the ARPU figure for the prepaid services increased to Rs 102.16, as per a report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). However, at the same time, postpaid ARPU fell from Rs 215 in the quarter ending June 2021 to Rs 212.28 in the quarter ending September 2021. Overall Wireless Services ARPU Increased by 3.34% QoQ in September EndThe overall monthly ARPU for wireless services grew by 3.34% during the September quarter to Rs 108.16 from Rs 104.66 in the June quarter. Further, on a YoY basis, the monthly wireless services ARPU jumped about 11.65% during the September quarter. The gross revenue (GR) and the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) increased for the quarter from the telecom service sector was Rs 67,300 crore and Rs 53,510 crore, respectively. The QoQ GR and AGR increased by 3.86% and 4.24%. This is a good sign for the telecom industry. Even without any major prepaid tariff hike during the September quarter, the ARPU for wireless services grew. The decline in postpaid ARPU will worry the telcos, but the telecom operators will be very happy with the kind of prepaid ARPU growth they saw in September. However, not to forget that during the same quarter, both Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) had removed their base prepaid plans of Rs 49, after which the next alternative left for the consumers was Rs 79 plan. But this would have only partly affected the ARPU as the changes were made late in the quarter. With the rise in AGR, the license fee (LF) also grew QoQ from Rs 4,103 crore at the end of the June quarter to Rs 4,271 crore at the end of September 2021. This implies a LF increase of 4.08% QoQ and 16.80% YoY. The December quarter revenues should be even better, and ARPU should be higher. |

| Reliance Jio Customers Confused After Recent Change in Benefits Posted: 10 Jan 2022 01:09 AM PST
Reliance Jio customers are a little confused as to which plans the JioMart Maha cashback offer is applicable on. Earlier, when Jio announced the cashback offer, it was assumed by many that the offer would be applicable on select prepaid plans, which were only three at the time — Rs 299, Rs 666, and Rs 719. But it wasn’t the case. However, since the company hasn't made any official announcement, a lot of consumers are confused. The Reliance JioMart Maha cashback of 20% is applicable on every prepaid plan that costs Rs 200 or more. So the cashback is not just limited to the above three plans anymore. Customers Confused About the Cashback Program of Jio RetailWhile this is a good thing only for the customers at the end of the day, a lack of announcement from Jio is making users choose either the Rs 299, Rs 666, or the Rs 719 plan for cashback. But since it is eligible with every unlimited benefit prepaid plan above Rs 200, users can flexibly recharge with their favourite prepaid tariffs from Jio and get the cashback. The maximum amount of cashback that a Jio customer can earn in a day is Rs 200. Users can also redeem their 20% cashback on their next recharge with Jio through the MyJio application or the company's website. The cashback amount or points can also be used across Reliance Retail channels. Jio customers in the TelecomTalk community were a little confused about the change in policy until now. With the cashback, Jio customers can get discounts on their next mobile recharge, which makes Jio's prepaid plans a very cheap and amazing alternative against the prepaid plans offered by other private telecom service providers, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi). Jio also announced a new Rs 2999 prepaid plan recently, which offers 2.5GB of daily data to the users along with 20% cashback for 365 days. |
| TRAI Wants IBDF to Withdraw Case in SC Regarding NTO 2.0 Posted: 10 Jan 2022 12:18 AM PST
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) wants the Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation (IBDF) to withdraw the NTO 2.0 case in the Supreme Court (SC). The regulator is planning to release a consultation paper on the matter and is also trying to end the problem in the backroom with IBDF. But according to an Exchange4media report, IBDF is non-committal on the backroom parley and wants TRAI to take an official stand in front of the Supreme Court (SC). No Change in TRAI Stance Yet as of Implementation of NTO 2.0An official aware of the matter told the publication that TRAI's stance on the implementation of the amended tariffs has not changed. As of now, NTO 2.0 is slated to be implemented from April 1, 2022. TRAI wants IBDF to withdraw the case in the SC so that it can release the consultation paper. The official said that TRAI couldn't resolve the issues on the matter if it is pending before the SC. IBDF can either wait for a resolution to arrive at SC or should go ahead and withdraw the case so that the regulator can roll out a consultation paper that will also include views from the broadcasters in the country. But IBDF doesn't want to withdraw the case and is looking for TRAI, a government body to own up to its mistakes. The broadcasters' body wants the regulator to affirm to the SC that it is ready to look into the demands of the broadcasters, and that will only break the deadlock between the two. The NTO 2.0 is going to increase the end TV bills of the consumers by a significant margin as any channel that is priced above the cap of Rs 12 can't be included in a bouquet offering. Thus, the broadcaster can price their driver channels very high. But the price capping is also going to reduce their overall subscription revenue, thus, they will have to recover it through higher-priced al-la-carte driver channels. |
| Xiaomi 11T Pro Hyperphone India Launch Confirmed for January 19, 2022 Posted: 09 Jan 2022 11:33 PM PST
Xiaomi 11T Pro Hyperphone will arrive in India on January 19, 2022. The date has been confirmed by the company through an official release. Xiaomi will hold a virtual event at 12 pm to launch the device in India. Rumours about the launch of the smartphone have already been making rounds online. Even some of the specifications have been hinted by credible tipsters. Let's take a look at the expected specifications and price of the smartphone. Xiaomi 11T Pro 5G Specifications and Price (Expected)The Xiaomi 11T Pro 5G or Xiaomi 11T Pro Hyperphone is expected to launch with a 6.67-inch AMOLED FHD+ display with support for 120Hz refresh rate. The smartphone could be powered by the Snapdragon 888 SoC, and because of the Hyperphone branding, it is expected to feature 120W fast-charging as well. We might only get to see the Xiaomi 11T Pro in India, and not its vanilla variant — Xiaomi 11T. To recall, Xiaomi had launched the Xiaomi 11T and Xiaomi 11T Pro in China in 2021. As for now, the company has only mentioned the launch of Xiaomi 11T Pro in India. However, the vanilla Xiaomi 11T powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC can't be ruled out entirely from launching in India. According to the tipster, Yogesh Brar, the Xiaomi 11T Pro Hyperphone is expected to be priced around or under Rs 40,000 bracket. This will put the smartphone in direct contention with the soon to launch OnePlus 9RT and the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE in India. Note that much recently, Xiaomi had unveiled the Xiaomi 11i series for India with two smartphones, including Xiaomi 11i and Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge. This could be an indication that the Xiaomi 11T series might also include two smartphones in India. With the launch scheduled for January 19, 2022, there's not a lot of time before the official specs and pricing of the device will be out for the Indian market. |

| TRAI Will Suggest How 5G Spectrum Will be Allocated in India Posted: 09 Jan 2022 10:30 PM PST
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will take the final call on how the 5G spectrum will be allocated to the relevant firms in India. With 5G, the role of private networks would enhance, and thus non-telecom firms will be very interested in getting their hands on the 5G spectrum. The telcos and non-telecom companies have a varied view on how the spectrum should be allocated for 5G networks. Telcos want that uniformity should be maintained, and everyone who seeks to get hands on the 5G spectrum should get it through an auction. But the thing is, the non-telecom firms say that for private 5G, the government can even allocate the spectrum administratively. TRAI Is Trying to Understand Whether a Change in Licensing Framework is RequiredAccording to a FinancialExpress report, TRAI is looking to understand from the telecom operators and the stakeholders whether there is a change required in the licensing framework when bandwidth is used for purposes other than providing direct services to the consumers. 5G spectrum would be used by many multinational companies for automating their manufacturing facilities, securing networks, and more. Since this would be very different from what the telecom operators do, which is provide direct network services to consumers, TRAI wants to understand whether the licensing framework for the same should be changed. The non-telecom companies would want to get a piece of the spectrum so that they can build their own private 5G networks for all internal communications and for automating manufacturing factories. This would keep their organisation's data a lot safer. The telcos want the spectrum to be auctioned for whomsoever is concerned, while the non-telecom firms have a different opinion. TRAI might reserve 25 MHz spectrum in the 3400 MHz – 3425 MHz frequency band for private 5G. Many industry analysts and experts believe that the 5G spectrum should not be auctioned for non-telecom firms as it doesn't really make any sense. |
| RailWire Offering Three Major Broadband Plans Across India Posted: 09 Jan 2022 09:22 PM PST
RailWire, the retail broadband business of RailTel, is present in multiple states and cities of India. RailWire is currently offering three major broadband plans to users living across India. These plans are listed on the company's website. Note that there are more broadband plans that are available locally in different areas, but these plans are not listed on the website and will be provided to the user once they reach out to a respective area's RailWire office. With the three RailWire broadband plans currently on offer across India, users get – 20 Mbps, 50 Mbps, and 100 Mbps speeds. RailWire Broadband Plans DetailsThe 20 Mbps plan is available for a monthly tariff of Rs 599, while the 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps plans are available for monthly tariffs of Rs 799 and Rs 999. The highlight of all these plans is that they offer truly unlimited data to the users. On the website of the company, it is mentioned that there is no limit on data usage; however, the connections are subject to technical feasibility in a customer's area. In comparison with other major internet service providers (ISPs), the RailWire broadband plans are quite expensive. With Airtel, Jio, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and other major ISPs, you can get a 30 Mbps or 40 Mbps speed plan for Rs 500 per month or lesser. Thus RailWire's retail broadband plans might not make a lot of sense to many users. However, it is still not a bad option if it is the only major ISP in your area as you get truly unlimited data. So the 100 Mbps plan from the company can be utilised for the long run by a big family with multiple devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It would have been better if users also got over-the-top (OTT) benefits with these broadband plans as they are a tad bit expensive than other plans from other ISPs offering the same speed and benefits. |
| Apple Expected to Launch New iPhone in March 2022 Posted: 09 Jan 2022 08:19 PM PST
Apple is expected to launch a new iPhone in March 2022. The Cupertino tech giant is reportedly working on a new iPhone, namely iPhone SE 2022 or iPhone SE 3 and will launch it in the first quarter of 2022. Leaks about the specifications and design of the iPhone SE 2022 are already out and suggest that the device would again look very much like the iPhone SE 2020 or the iPhone SE 2. But this time around, the highlight of the new iPhone SE would be the support for 5G services. Here's everything you should know about the upcoming iPhone SE from Apple. Apple iPhone SE 2022 Specifications and Details (Rumoured)While Apple hasn't shared or hinted any detail around the specifications or the launch of the iPhone SE 2022, a lot of leaks from credible sources are already making rounds online. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple might announce a special virtual event in March or April 2022. This event could be for the unveiling of the iPhone SE 2022. There are people who are waiting to see the new MacBook Air with a fresh design and colours as well. But they might have to wait further as it is highly unlikely that Apple will announce a new laptop in its first event of 2022. As for the iPhone SE 2022, users might get a smartphone with a 4.7-inch Retina HD LCD display with a physical home button as in the older generation iPhone SE models. This will likely be the last iPhone ever to come with a physical button. The future generation iPhone SE model (the one that will launch after the iPhone SE 2022) is expected to feature the design of one of the iPhone X series devices. The iPhone SE 2022 is expected to pack the A15 Bionic SoC coupled with up to 3GB of RAM. According to an estimate from J.P. Morgan, the new affordable iPhone is expected to lure in approximately 1.4 billion low-to-mid-range Android device users. |
| Vodafone Idea Might Take Same Decision as Airtel Regarding Equity for Govt Posted: 09 Jan 2022 06:50 PM PST
Vodafone Idea, the third-largest telecom operator might take the same decision as Bharti Airtel when it comes to converting the accrued interest dues into equity for the government (govt). Much recently, Bharti Airtel said that it is not accepting the option of converting interest dues into equity for the govt. Vodafone Idea might do the same as well. Things are much different now than they used to be. The relief package announced by the government has changed the overall outlook of the telecom industry to positive. Even Vodafone Idea, which has huge debt on its books should feel comfortable with the significant ease in cash flow. Telcos Could Easily Pay Off the Interest DuesAs a part of its relief package, the Indian government offered the telcos an option to convert their interest accrued on the deferred spectrum and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues into equity for the centre. Accepting this would have meant that no matter what, the company would stay in the market over the long term as it would be backed by a government stake. But with the liquidity ease that has arrived with the announcement of the relief package, the telcos should be able to reinvest into their businesses in a better capacity and pay off the interest dues comfortably with a higher revenue backing. While Vodafone Idea is yet to announce its views on the matter and we have had no communication with the company regarding this, there's a very high probability that the telco would opt out of giving equity to the government. Vodafone Idea is in a much better position to raise fresh capital now and would not be worried about paying off dues to the government. With 5G, even enterprise revenues for the telcos would grow which should further add to the ease in cash flow in the medium term. |
