| Do You Need More 5G Bands on Your Smartphone? Absolutely Not! Posted: 17 Jan 2022 08:11 AM PST
There are many consumers who are unhappy with the fact that their 5G smartphone supports less than five or, on certain occasions, a single 5G band. For the unaware, 5G services would be rolled out using a dynamic range of the spectrum, which would for the first time include mobile services rollout with C-band spectrum (3.3-3.6 GHz) and mmWave (26 GHz and 28 GHz) spectrum band. 5G speeds and use cases would differ with respect to the particular spectrum band that is being used by the operator to provide services. For example, the mmWave band 5G would be able to deliver download speeds of up to 4.2 Gbps (proven by Vodafone Idea 5G trials) while using the C-band spectrum, download speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps can be delivered. Users Don't Need to be Bummed Out Because Their Smartphones Don't Support Multiple 5G BandsYour smartphone doesn't need to support multiple 5G bands. Some smartphones in India are only coming with support for the N78 5G band. While it seems like nothing, it is going to make all the difference for the user. 5G services in India are expected to be widely available through the N78 band only. If smartphone makers start bundling in support for all 5G bands, it would just result in an increased price for the devices. On top of that, the support for most of the 5G bands won't even be utilised by the consumer. This would mean that by paying extra, the consumer has no real benefit of the support for extra 5G bands. Thus, while purchasing a device in your budget with support for more 5G bands is a good idea, it shouldn't be the single factor influencing your decision. Rather, if your smartphone supports the N78 band, look for other things such as processor, memory, display, and performance to make your final decision. There are many 5G smartphones out in the market right now and present in almost every category, be it affordable/budget, mid-range, premium, or ultra-premium. Make your choice carefully and deliberately! |
| Jio Pushes for Auction of Spectrum for Allocation of Airwaves in its Submission to TRAI Posted: 17 Jan 2022 07:24 AM PST
5G spectrum auctions are on the horizon as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has already kick-started the process. Now, in new developments, India's leading telecom operator Reliance Jio has informed TRAI about the gaining popularity of auction of spectrum for broadband-from-space services as Brazil has already completed the process and seemingly Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Thailand are all set to follow the suit. Jio has rather urged TRAI to allocate spectrum for broadband-from-space services only via auctions following the global trend and "discard all demands" of global players who are looking for allocation of airwaves via the administrative process. Need for Auction of SpectrumAccording to a report from ET Telecom, the telecom has called the administrative process of allocation "a relic of the competition-free past" and has said it is totally contradictory to the competitive situations in the telecom sector pertaining now. Jio has made its counter-submission to further strengthen the ongoing battle with global satellite players such as OneWeb, Starlink, Kuiper and Tata-Telesat over the process of allocating spectrum to operate satellite gateways in India. For those unaware, satellite gateways are an important infrastructure resource that will allow the offering of broadband-from-space services in the country. Jio wrote in its counter submission to TRAI that administrative allocation of spectrum is not the only way of allocating as being pushed by multiple stakeholders and auctions have become more of a global trend when it comes to allocation of spectrum for satellite services. The submission from Jio has also been backed by telecom consultants, Dua Consulting. Jio had also made a point in its original submission to TRAI stating that spectrum should be assigned only via auctions as it would be in line with a verdict made by the Supreme Court in 2021 which suggests that supports the move of allocation of airwaves through transparent auctions alone. Jio also cited the examples of countries like Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Thailand and Brazil which have opted for auctions as a mode of allocating spectrum. The telco stated that auctions of the spectrum are feasible and is also gaining popularity globally. Global Satellite Providers which also includes Jio's rival telecom company Airtel, on the other hand, have stated in their submissions to TRAI that the auctions would create a more dispersed allocation of airwaves and the potential of satellite broadband services in India might not be achieved. |

| Missing iPhone 13 Noise Cancellation Is Not a Hardware or iOS 15 Glitch Posted: 17 Jan 2022 04:16 AM PST
There were widespread complaints from Apple iPhone 13 users about the lack of a noise cancellation feature for phone calls on iPhone 13. While people attributed the issue to a possible bug, Apple finally confirmed that it was a deliberate removal of the feature. However, the reason for removing noise cancellation on Apple iPhone 13 is not known. The issue started almost a month back when a Reddit user complaint about the issue on the platform. According to the user, the person on the other end is unable to hear the caller when there is noise in the surroundings. The issue persists for all calls made without AirPods or other devices having an in-built noise cancellation feature. People posted about the issue on Apple Forum as well, and many responded that it could be a glitch in iOS 15. The problem continued to exist even after the release of the iOS 15.2 update. Some deemed about iPhone 13 having fewer mics than iPhone 12. Apple iPhone 12 uses multiple microphones for noise cancellation. The setting is found under Accessibility -> Audio/Visual. Apple may not fix iPhone 13 noise cancellation issueA new report from 9to5 Mac suggests that the lack of feature is by design. A person, Steve, contacted Apple Support via Twitter and sought clarification on updates of the issue. After months of multiple discussions with Apple and a senior advisor, the user confirmed that the tech giant would not fix the problem. The noise cancellation feature was intentionally disabled for iPhone 13 devices due to 'unspecified reasons.' Apple started introducing noise cancellation feature from the iOS 7 update launched in 2013. The feature was highly useful since it reduced ambient noises considerably while making phone calls. Apple recently added a noise isolation feature for FaceTime callers to enhance the caller's voice and distinguish it from other noises in the background. Apple has not officially released any statement announcing the reason for the feature removal. The issue seems strange as noise cancellation is a much-required feature, especially for phones. Furious reactions on Reddit continue with people seeking Apple to explain. Perhaps, Apple may solve it in the upcoming Apple iPhone. |

| Vodafone Idea Giving Major Equity to Govt Makes It Appear Weaker to Investors: Counterpoint Research Posted: 17 Jan 2022 12:39 AM PST
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in India, has been the talk of the town for the last few days post giving away a major stake in the company to the government. The telco wanted to reduce the debt burden, which it has, but the cost was too high. With the government holding such a major piece of the company, it will appear weaker now. "Vi can now find it more difficult to attract investors as such a big equity dilution (at a lower trading value of Rs10 per share) with government being a majority stakeholder makes it appear weaker," Charu Paliwal, an analyst at Counterpoint Research, told TelecomTalk, adding that the news is positive for the telco to stay afloat, but it will not be enough to attract the investors. Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel Positioned Much Stronger NowAccording to Paliwal, the move from Vodafone Idea regarding giving away equity to the government will now further strengthen the position of its rivals, including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. In a statement, Bharti Airtel had said that it wouldn't be going for the equity conversion option, and the same was expected by Vodafone Idea as well. Vodafone Idea needs to work on bringing its capex up to ensure that its 4G networks are growing at a rapid speed to compete with the rivals. The telco also needs funding from investors to ensure that it can participate in the 5G spectrum auctions in full capacity. "Government bailing out Vi is a positive news for the company to stay afloat but this will not be enough to attract investors. Operator also needs to work on its market competitiveness by bringing capex levels at par with other private telcos, expand 4G network and grow ARPU to attract investors," said Paliwal. Despite the recent tariff hikes, the average revenue per user (ARPU) level of the telco is not where it should be. According to Motilal Oswal, Vodafone Idea needs another tariff hike to increase its ARPU by 1.9x from now for reaching a self-sustainable level. Motilal Oswal said that capex levels need to go up as it will help the telco in reducing the subscriber churn rate. While the government has said that it won't interfere with the business of a private telco and exit as and when the company has attained stability, it won't happen anytime soon, believes Paliwal. The government stake might even grow further in the future if Vodafone Idea is unable to turn the business around for good. "Although the government has made it clear to exit the business once it stabilises, but we don't see that happening in near term. Vi will have to turn around its business to prevent government stake further getting increased when subsequent dues become payable after moratorium period ends." |
| C-Band 5G Spectrum an Issue for Broadcasters in India Posted: 17 Jan 2022 12:14 AM PST
C-band spectrum has become a topic of hot discussion for 5G. It is because it has been claimed by various bodies, including aviation as well as broadcasters, to interfere with their respective services. The broadcasters are not happy with the interference that the C-band 5G has caused in the last year since the 5G trials kicked off in India. Airwaves in the 526-698 MHz, 700 MHz, 900 MHz, and so on, including the 3300-3670 MHz bands, have been identified for 5G services. But the broadcasters are worried about the overall interference that this will cause to their services. For the unaware, downlinks by all the broadcasters intended for reception by MSOs (Multi-System Operators) are in the 3700-4200 MHz band. Thus, the broadcasters are concerned about the limited guard band of 30 MHz between 5G and the satellite TV services. Broadcasters Want a Guard of 100 MHz Between the Two ServicesAccording to an IndianTelevision report, the broadcasters want a minimum guard of 100 MHz be maintained between the two services. This is in accordance with the National Frequency Allocation Policy (NFAP) 2018. Much recently, Prasar Bharti raised concerns regarding the use of 526-698 MHz spectrum for 5G services. The public broadcaster told the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that for planning DD TV Transmitters, the availability of spectrum in the 600 MHz band is crucial. It is not just the broadcasters against the use of the C-band spectrum for 5G services, but also the aviation industry. Certain aviation bodies have raised objections against the C-band 5G both in India and internationally because it can interfere with the altimeter and other sensitive aircraft equipment. But it hasn't been proven yet, and mobile industry bodies have claimed that 5G is absolutely safe and is already deployed in some nations where there haven't been any reports of interference. It will be all clear as to what will happen once the updated NFAP is released by the government. |

| Interested in Buying Galaxy S22? You Might Have to Pay Extra Posted: 16 Jan 2022 10:49 PM PST
It is not hidden from anyone the struggle that the semiconductor and electronics manufacturers are facing due to the shortage of components. Smartphone makers across the globe are finding it hard to procure the components for building devices at reasonable rates due to supply constraints. Samsung Galaxy S22 series, the flagship smartphone series from Samsung for 2022, is not far from launch. The South Korean tech giant might have to price the smartphones in the Galaxy S22 series a little higher than planned due to the shortage of chipsets globally. Semiconductor manufacturers aren't able to produce in the same quantities and speed in which they used to pre-pandemic, and on top of this, there are also shipment issues. Even shipment costs have gone up significantly. Due to this, the overall cost for manufacturing a smartphone has increased for the companies. Samsung Galaxy S22 Series Will Face Stiff Competition from Apple and Chinese BrandsIf Samsung decides to price the S22 series smartphones more than the S21 series, it might lose significant market share to Apple and Chinese brands. Apple didn't interfere with the pricing of the iPhone 13 series. The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13 series both were launched for identical prices. While Samsung is great, it might lose market share to Apple if the company decides to hike the prices of the Galaxy S22 series. Further, people might just focus on the S21 series instead, which might not be the latest in the market, but still has really good specifications and features. The Galaxy S21 series will also get a price cut once the S22 series is out, and if the S22 series is more expensive, users would just go for the S21 series as its value utility would increase with the decreased price. Chinese brands such as OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo might also be able to capture some market share from Samsung. |

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) offers a perfect prepaid plan to users who want more data but are looking for a plan with short-term validity. This plan costs Rs 140 and comes with service validity of 30 days. Users get 2GB of daily fair-usage-policy (FUP) data along with truly unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. But this plan is only available for the RNSBL customers of Gujarat, the telco says. However, there's another prepaid plan from BSNL available for the short-term that is available for the short term, but this plan comes with completely different benefits and costs a little more. BSNL Rs 147 Prepaid Plan and Rs 118 Prepaid Plans With No SMS BenefitsThis plan costs Rs 147 and comes with a validity of 30 days. With the Rs 147 plan from BSNL, users get 10GB of lump-sum data, which can all be used in one go. Along with this, users get unlimited voice calling and free BSNL tunes. There are no SMS bundled with this plan which is a bummer as even Jio and Airtel are offering prepaid plans with SMSes for less than Rs 120. Post the consumption of fair-usage-policy (FUP) data, the internet speed drops to 40 Kbps and offers free PRBT service as well. Even this plan doesn't offer consumers SMS benefits.
