Verizon, AT&T Further Delay Rollout of C-Band 5G

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 11:08 PM PST

Verizon 5G

Two of the top telecom operators in the United States (U.S.) have further delayed the rollout of C-band 5G in some areas near the airport. Some of the largest airlines in the country have said that the rollout of C-band 5G would interfere with aircraft technology and disrupt communication. According to an AP report, the telcos decided to delay the launch of 5G near some key airports after the Biden administration intervened for brokering a settlement between the airlines and the telecom companies.

The telecom companies will delay in turning on the 5G cell towers within a 2-mile radius of runways designated by the federal officials. It is unclear how long these towers will be idle.

The Decision of Verizon, AT&T a Good One

Joe Biden, President of the U.S., said the decision from the telecom operators would ensure that passenger travel, cargo operations, and economic recovery are at pace. The telcos will still switch on more than 90% of the 5G towers in the U.S. as scheduled apart from the ones that are within a 2-mile radius of the runways.

The issue that the aviation bodies have with C-band 5G is that the airwaves used by the altimeter in the aircraft is close to the airwaves used for C-band 5G. Altimeters are crucial equipment for the pilots to help with landing when the visibility is low on the runway.

The telecom operators said that their equipment would not interfere with the operating flights as the same technology is being used by 40 other nations which have already deployed 5G.

But the airline CEOs have said that the disruption caused by 5G near the airports would be more than initially thought. This is because, according to the flight restrictions announced by the FAA last week, dozens of major airports would be affected if 5G services were deployed nearby.

But this is even hard for the telcos to understand since they have spent billions of dollars in acquiring the C-band spectrum from the government.

Vodafone Idea Rs 599 Plan Better than Jio, Airtel 84 Days Plan

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 08:17 PM PST

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi) offers a Rs 599 prepaid plan to prepaid customers living across India. The speciality of this plan is that it comes with 70 days of validity. In terms of data, users get 1.5GB of daily data along with unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. The plan also bundles Vi Hero Unlimited benefits which include Data Delights, Weekend Rollover, and Binge All Night offer.

All the additional offers are meant to enhance the data consumption experience of the users in one way or another. This plan is much better than what Jio and Airtel offer as their 84 days plan.

Jio, Airtel 84 Days Plan Not Worth Much in Front of Rs 599 Plan from Vi

Yes, while the additional 14 days of service would definitely cost more, paying Rs 666 to Jio and Rs 719 to Airtel for the 84 days plan with 1.5GB of daily data isn't worth much in front of the Rs 599 plan from Vodafone Idea.

This is because of the additional offers that Vi is offering to the customers with its plan. While even Vi's plan for 84 days with 1.5GB of daily data costs Rs 719, this 70 days plan is also giving a lot of value to the customers.

The Rs 599 plan also bundles an over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Vi Movies & TV Classic. If you want to spend a little less and want a prepaid plan for the medium-term, the Rs 599 plan is a good option from Vodafone Idea. A user will be spending Rs 8.56 per day for mobile services if he/she is choosing the Rs 599 plan from Vi.

Given that it comes with 1.5GB of daily data and the other additional offers, it is absolutely worth the money and not expensive at all. Some might avoid Vodafone Idea's plan here due to the inferior 4G network compared to Jio and Airtel's 4G network.

Jio Prepays Rs 30,791 Crore of Deferred Spectrum Dues Prior to March 2021

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 07:09 PM PST

Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio has prepaid Rs 30,791 crore worth of deferred spectrum liabilities to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This has helped the telco clear all the spectrum dues pertaining to auctions prior to March 2021. Along with this, Jio has prepaid the deferred liabilities pertaining to the spectrum acquired in 2021 through trading of right to use with Bharti Airtel.

Jio had executed the first part or tranche of the prepayment in October 2021 for deferred liabilities pertaining to the spectrum auctions of 2016. Even though the DoT had said that the telcos could prepay their deferred spectrum liabilities on any date, Reliance Jio has cleared that in the month of January 2022 itself.

Jio Clears Deferred Spectrum Auction Liabilities That Was Due Starting FY23

The liabilities that Jio has prepaid were due starting from FY23 to FY35 in annual instalments and would have carried an interest rate between 9.30% to 10% per annum with an average residual period of more than seven years.

By making the payments now, Jio estimates that it will be able to save around Rs 1200 crores annually in interest.

This shows the kind of cash flow that Reliance Jio has been generating. Clearing complete Rs 30,791 crore of dues from its books has also helped the telco in deleveraging and save thousands of crores in interests.

Jio will have to spend thousands of crores in the upcoming 5G spectrum auctions, and it is a better way to go into the auctions with a clean slate and no huge spectrum liabilities on the shoulder.

It is worth noting that Jio had also declined the government's offer of a moratorium on the spectrum and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues which is again a statement of how strong the company's financials are.

To develop a 5G ecosystem, telecom operators will have to increase capex levels significantly, and it is expected to again create fresh liabilities, even for Jio.

Apple Dethrones Samsung to Become the Leading Global Smartphone Manufacturer in Q4 of 2021

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 08:42 AM PST

Apple Global Smartphone Leader

Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has once again managed to reclaim its number one position in the global smartphone market by overtaking Samsung in the fourth quarter of 2021. The report comes in from the market research firm Canalys which informs that Apple has managed to make 22% of the global shipments of smartphones in the quarter. The rise has can be credited to the huge demand for the company's iPhone 13 Series which has finally brought Apple on the top after three quarters.

Apple's Growth and the Global Market Share

Sanyam Chaurasia who is an analyst for Canalys said in a statement that Apple witnessed an exceptional performance of its iPhone in China and was able to keep the value proposition strong with the hard-hitting prices of its flagship iPhone devices. He further informed that even though the supply chain of the company is on the path of recovery, it still had to restrict its production in the fourth quarter due to a shortage of major components. This resulted in Apple not being able to manufacture enough iPhones as it was required to meet the demand.

Apple's 22% share of the market was followed by the South Korean tech giant Samsung which managed to have 20% of the market share in terms of shipment of smartphones globally. While Samsung slipped to the second position, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi was able to retain its third position with 12% of the market share. Xiaomi was followed by two other Chinese smartphone manufacturers – Oppo and Vivo which managed to end up in fourth and fifth position with 9% and 8% of total global market share respectively.

The report from Canalys also informed that the overall shipment of the smartphones globally grew only by 1% as most of the manufacturers had to deal with supply chain issues because of the rising cases of Covid-19. According to the VP Mobility of Canalys Nicole Peng, the low-end vendors were majorly affected by the disturbances in the supply chain. Furthermore, Peng said that the problem of component shortage will pertain at least until the second half of 2022.

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 06:50 AM PST

The telco added 13,18,251 (1.31 million) new wireless users in November 2021, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. At the same time, Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost 18,97,050 (1.89 million) users.

According to TRAI data, Bharti Airtel added 1,30,902 new wireline subscribers during the month, while Jio added 2,07,114 new wireline subscribers at the same time. The growth for both the telcos in wireline subscribers signifies the rising demand for their fiber broadband business.

At the same time, Vodafone Idea (lost 38,083 users), BSNL (lost 77,434 users), and MTNL (lost 1828 users) witnessed a decline in wireline customers.

Bharti Airtel again had the highest percentage of VLR or active customers on its subscriber base. Reliance Jio seems to be making a good recovery in this area, with 83.90% of its subscribers being reported to be active during the month.

Jio Had the Largest Wireless Subscriber Market Share at the End of November 2021

In the wireline segment, though, BSNL and MTNL, government-owned telecom companies, had the biggest piece of the market — holding 44.30% of the market share where BSNL held 32.48%, and MTNL held 11.82%. BSNL and MTNL are losing wireline subscribers for consecutive months now while Jio and Airtel are adding new ones. BSNL will have to push aggressively for growing the broadband business from hereon.

TRAI and TV Broadcasters’ Conflict Evolves over OTT Platforms

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 05:20 AM PST

TRAI TV Broadcasters Conflict

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and TV Broadcasters seem to have stuck on another dispute. The reason for disagreement is whether the broadcasters have violated clause 5.6 of the government's downlinking guidelines by delivery of the linear channels on Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms. It is noted that there is already a going conflict between the two parties, which involves a legal battle between the two sides over the New Tariff Order (NTO) 2.0, which has resulted in the deployment of restrictions over progression in the building of channels.

The Reason Behind the Disagreement

The issue emerged when the regulator body asked the broadcaster such as Star India, Zee Entertainment, Sony Pictures Networks India, Viacom18, and Sun TV Network to provide details in regards to the linear channels provided by them to their in-house and third-party OTT platforms. Apparently, the TRAI had received complaints that broadcasters were violating clause 5.6 of the downlinking guidelines.

As a response to the allegations made by TRAI, the broadcaster cited section 37 of the Copyright Act, which is also known as Broadcast Reproduction Right, which gives them the right to monetise the content through multiple platforms. Broadcasters also debated that OTT platforms do not fall under any licensing conditions, including the downlinking guidelines, which make it beyond the jurisdiction of TRAI.

In the response, an official from TRAI who requested to be anonymous said in a statement that broadcasters should not be afraid if no law is being violated. Talking about the jurisdiction of TRAI, the official said that the regulatory body believes they have authority over OTT platforms and they are simply choosing not to implement it "for the time being"

Previously Tamil Nadu Digital Cable TV Operator Association had issued a legal notice against TRAI due to the implementation of a new tariff framework and deferment of revised charges by Star India. In response to this, TRAI had informed the association that the tariff orders issued by it do not apply to OTT platforms as MIB doesn't provide any license or permissions to OTT platforms. If experts are to be believed, the issue is arising because of more subscribers shifting towards OTT services from linear services, and it is crucial to make sure that there is an equivalence between OTT and traditional distribution services like cable TV, direct to home (DTH), and headend in the sky (HITS).

Indian Villages Across Borders Likely to Get Satellite-Based Communication Services Soon

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 04:26 AM PST

Indian Villages

Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), a state-owned rural broadband infrastructure organisation, plans to connect 6,929 panchayats with satellite-based communications services in the borders, Naxal-affected areas, and island territories. The telecom ministry's special purpose vehicle has already launched satellite services in 4,682-gram panchayats, including Galwan Valley, Doklam, Leh, Tawang, and other areas.

Among the 4,682 gram panchayats connected with satellite services, 1,389 locations are controlled by India's defence sector. The remaining areas will also be connected with the satellite services by June 2022.

As per a PTI report, a government official said, BBNL's project to deliver satellite-based communications services in village panchayats that are sensitive in nature, like that of Galwan Valley and Doklam, started in 2020. The government's telecom service provider BSNL and Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) were given contracts to deploy satellite connectivity in 6,929 gram panchayats in 2020.

The work was divided between TCIL and BSNL, with TCIL having to connect 5,521 gram panchayats and BSNL to deploy services across 1,408 gram panchayats. TCIL has already completed implementation in around 3,500 gram panchayats. It selected Hughes Communications to connect about 5,000 areas. BSNL deployed services in 1,138 gram panchayats among the 1,408 gram panchayats allocated to it.

Communication service will be given free for defence personnel. The normal delay in communication with offices and their families will significantly reduce with the facility. Each location will get services at an average speed of 10 Mbps to 30 Mbps speed, which will help them fulfil many basic communication requirements. The project was long-pending and was a strategic need for the country to connect villages in borders, which will now be fulfilled.

Communication services will soon be open to public

The officials will also decide on the commercial roll-out of the project. The decision about tariffs of the packages for the customers is likely to be taken forward after closing the test projects in more states. The tariffs are likely to be very reasonable to extend the reach of the internet among people. The revenue shortfall for the implementing agencies, if occur, whether government or private, is expected to be met from the USOF.

Apple’s Mixed Reality Headset Might be Delayed Until 2023 as Issues Surface

Posted: 18 Jan 2022 03:13 AM PST

Apple Mixed Reality Headset

One of the most anticipated devices from Apple in 2022 is the upcoming mixed reality headset but a recent report suggests that the device might have hit delays that could push the launch until the end of 2022 or even 2023. There have been multiple reports about the tech giant working on an AR/VR headset that has reportedly been in development since 2015. The wearable is expected to feature iOS 16 that has not been unveiled yet, and is expected to release in the latter half of the year. It is expected that the device will be priced at about $2000, which amounts to roughly Rs 1,49,000.

The Problem with the Wearable

Renowned publication Bloomberg has reported that the Cupertino-based tech giant might be looking to push back the launch date for its mixed reality headset that was earlier expected to arrive at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) conference in June. According to the report, the development of the headset is facing challenges, including and related to overheating, cameras and software. This might result in the announcement of the product by Apple in late 2022, and the actual device might be available for purchase in 2023.

The report informs that the wearable has been in the works since 2015 and was earlier planned to be launched in 2021, with availability for purchase in 2022. The upcoming mixed reality headset has been codenamed N301, and it is rumoured that Apple will be replacing its iPhones with wearable in a decade's time. The last major product that shifted the winds was Apple Watch which was revealed in 2015. Since then, there have been some other notable devices as well, such as Apple HomePod and AirTags tracker.

Talking about the AR/VR headset, it has been previously reported that the device is expected to be powered by two chipsets, one of which is expected to be as powerful as the M1 chipsets used in the company's MacBook Pro. However, the heating issue mentioned above is apparently being caused because of the chips while the exact reason is unknown. The mixed reality headset is expected to be just a step towards the company's rumoured N421 AR glasses which we might witness in the coming years.

Exynos 2200

Samsung has just announced the Exynos 2200 chipset for its flagship smartphones in 2022. It is a mobile processor with a powerful AMD RDNA 2 architecture based Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit (GPU). The chipset is built on the most advanced 4-nanometer (nm) EUV process to deliver the finest experience for smartphone users.

Exynos 2200 to Deliver Powerful Gaming Experience With Industry's First Hardware Ray Tracing for Mobile

The chipset will bundle Xclipse GPU with the high-performance AMD RDNA 2 as its backbone. The Xclipse comes with advanced features such as hardware ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS) that were only available in laptops, PCs, and consoles until now. With ray tracing, the chipset will be able to deliver a world-class gaming experience to the users because of the way it can simulate light and other things.

Of course, the Exynos 2200 also bring advanced 5G support to the table. The chipset is one of the first in the market to integrate Arm's latest Armv9 CPU cores, which are going to bump up the security and overall performance of the device.

The Exynos 2200 has a 3GPP recommended 5G modem that can support both sub-6 GHz and mmWave spectrum band connectivity. The octa-core CPU is built in a tri-cluster structure with a single powerful Arm Cortex -X2 flagship core, three performance and efficiency balanced Cortex-A710 big-cores and four power-efficient Cortex-A510 little-cores.

Further, the Exynos 2200's image signal processor (ISP) architecture has been redesigned to support the latest image sensors for ultra-high resolution of up to 200MP. For video recording, the ISP can support up to 4K HDR or 8K resolution. The chipset supports up to 108MP in single camera mode while 64MP + 36MP in dual-camera mode. With the Exynos 2200, the display of the smartphones will be able to support up to 144Hz refresh rate.

ACT 300 Mbps Broadband Plan Benefits

ACT provides the 300 Mbps broadband plan with unlimited data which is 3.3TB per month and also offer additional benefits including a free month of ZEE5 Premium trial, ACT Stream TV 4K at Rs 200 per month, Hungama at Rs 99 per month, SonyLIV at Rs 299 per month, Epic ON free trial of one month, Aha at Rs 349 per year, ACT Game benefits worth Rs 2850 per month, ACT Shield starting at Rs 49 per month, and a free month of the cult.fit trial.

Apple May Only Reserve ProMotion Display for ‘Pro’ iPhones in 2022

Apple

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 14 series in September this year. The Cupertino tech giant might launch four smartphones in the iPhone 14 series, including iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. It's hard to say what role will iPhone 14 Max play between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro.

According to a fresh development shared by a popular tipster, Ross Young, Apple is expected to keep the 120Hz ProMotion display technology for the 'Pro' model iPhones in 2022 as well.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max Might Not Get Higher Refresh Rate Support

Even in 2022, when Android companies are offering 90Hz refresh rate at least with their mid-range devices, Apple might only offer the 120Hz refresh rate with the Pro models of the iPhone 14 series and the regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max might get the same 60Hz refresh rate display.

Young said that Apple is looking to get the display panels this year from a Chinese company called BOE and this particular company is currently incapable of supplying OLED display panels with the varying refresh rate.

This means that Apple is in no rush to upgrade the display of its base iPhones this year. It would just not feel right to pay a ton of money in 2022 for a high-end flagship smartphone and get the same years old 60Hz refresh rate technology. Other smartphone companies are offering high-refresh-rate displays for much less to the customers.

Even with the iPhone 13 series, only two smartphones have 120Hz refresh rate — iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The base models in the series use the same old display technology and can support only 60Hz refresh rate.

Apple might also get rid of the ugly notch with the iPhone 14 series and introduce a punch-hole cutout at the top of the screen to house the front-camera sensor.
