| COAI Pursues Maharashtra Government for Aid in Deployment of Aerial OFC Network in Pune Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:27 AM PST
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the Indian non-governmental industry body of telecom operators of India has asked for aid from the Maharashtra Government to evade the network outages in the city of Pune. The issue arises as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued letters/notices to TSPs and cable TV operators demanding payment of charges for the regularization of aerial OFCs within its municipal limits. It is to be noted that telecom service providers have already laid aerial OFCs across Maharashtra, including Pune. Let's find out more. The Absence of a FrameworkTelecom Service Providers have laid down aerial OFCs across the state of Maharashtra to fulfil the National Broadband Mission and for the realization of the ‘Gati Shakti’ mission by the Government of India. The aerial OFCs down by the operators are in compliance with all the requirements and conditions of the License issued by DoT as per the governing legal framework for the OFCs/ROWS. But the PMC is demanding the payment of charges and apparently, the Standing Committee and the General Body of PMC have passed the resolution for such demand. It is very crucial to have incessant telecom connectivity during these challenging times, in particular, not only for the continuity of business and economy but also for the education of children and management of health infrastructure. However, the discrepancy in ROW policy is causing interruptions in the rollout of telecom infrastructure throughout the city of Pune. COAI has also informed that extensive laying of OFCs has commenced and is still underway by its member Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). The root cause of the whole scenario, however, seems to be the unavailability of provision for the deployment of aerial fibre in the State under the Maharashtra State Telecom Infrastructure Policy. COAI had already requested the state government to commence the process of establishing the framework for aerial OFCs before the laying of the network. The absence of any sort of framework for the deployment of overhead OFCs makes the charges imposed by PMC totally subjective and unjustified. The Director-General of COAI, Lt. Gen. Dr SP Kochhar, said in a statement that the industry is facing issues in Pune due to the absence of a framework for laying overhead OFC network, and PMC is demanding an excessive amount of charges for the regularisation of telecom infrastructure. He added that COAI had sought the support of the Maharashtra Government for their urgent intervention to avoid any network disruptions in the city. |

| Hathway 150 Mbps Broadband Plan a Little Weak Against BSNL’s Same Offering Posted: 27 Jan 2022 04:21 AM PST
Hathway and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), two of the biggest and widely recognised fiber internet service providers (ISPs) across India offer users 150 Mbps plans. With their 150 Mbps plans, users get a ton of data at close to similar pricing. BSNL's 150 Mbps is fairly new. If you are deciding between the plans offered by both the companies, here's what you should know. BSNL 150 Mbps Broadband PlanBSNL offers its 150 Mbps broadband plan for Rs 949 per month. This plan is called Super Star-2 and as mentioned above, it is fairly new. With this plan, users get 2000GB or 2TB of monthly fair-usage-policy (FUP) data along with a free fixed-line voice calling connection and plenty of additional over-the-top (OTT) benefits including SonyLIV Premium, ZEE5 Premium, YuppTV-Live, and Voot. With taxes included, the monthly cost of the plan becomes Rs 1,119.82. Now, let's check what Hathway Fibernet is offering for the same cost here. Hathway 150 Mbps Broadband PlanHathway offers its 150 Mbps broadband plan in Mumbai for Rs 2697 for three months. With taxes included, the total cost of the three months plan becomes Rs 3182.46; which means the monthly cost of the plan is Rs 1060.82. This plan is not available on a single month validity basis. It can be purchased for at least three months. There's a FUP limit applicable, but it is not mentioned on the website. Post the consumption of FUP data, the internet speed would drop to 5 Mbps. BSNL vs Hathway: Why is BSNL Better Here?First thing's first, yes, BSNL's plan is slightly more expensive. But it isn't a very big difference. In addition to this, with BSNL's plan, users get a ton of FUP data along with OTT benefits which Hathway users won't get by paying almost the same price. Further, if you are going for the Hathway 150 Mbps plan, you will have to spend for at least three months together which is not the case with BSNL's 150 Mbps plan. |

| WhatsApp Might Add Support for This New Much Needed Feature Posted: 27 Jan 2022 12:16 AM PST
Facebook-owned social media giant WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow admins to delete messages for all users of the group. Right now, each individual can only delete a message sent by another user in a group for him/herself only; this includes admins as well. But very soon, WhatsApp could add support for admins to delete the messages of another user in the group for everyone. The company hasn't officially announced that it is going to bring the feature, but the feature has been spotted in the beta version of the application. WhatsApp Working to Enable Better ModerationThis is not a unique or a very new feature. Telegram already has such a feature for its users. Thus, WhatsApp is also expected to come out with it soon. It would allow better moderation by the group admins and enable proper control over the group. WABetaInfo has already tested the feature and said that it gives the admin the power to delete any message he/she wants for all the users in the group. With fake news spreading very easily over platforms such as WhatsApp, this tool would enable admins of the group to moderate content on the platform and curb the spread of fake news by deleting unverified information or links meant for harming user privacy. In 2021, the Bombay High Court had shared its concern over the existing power that a group admin has in WhatsApp. Currently, an admin can only add and remove users from the group. They don't have the power to moderate or regulate content that comes into the group chat. Thus, this new feature is going to make not only the users but also the authorities in the country happy. More details about the feature are in the dark as WhatsApp is yet to roll it out for the stable version of the application both in iOS and Android. |
| Viavi to Test Issues of 5G Interference With Avionics Systems Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:32 PM PST
Viavi Solutions has said that it will provide its support for verifying the existence of any interference between 5G communications networks and radar altimeters used in the aviation industry. There has been a lot of noise in the aviation as well as telecom industry about the possible threat of C-band 5G services interfering with the sensitive aircraft equipment. Thus Viavi has said that it would pitch in to solve this issue with its extensive history in testing both avionics as well as wireless equipment for communication service providers, military branches, airlines, and equipment manufacturers worldwide. Viavi Said Potential Interference Would Occur In Narrow Band of Radio FrequencyAccording to a statement from Viavi, any potential interference would only occur in a very narrow band of radio frequency. The interference would occur in the frequency that is not even a part of C-band 5G in India (3.7 GHz – 3.98 GHz). Radio altimeter systems inside the aircraft utilise airwaves in the 4.2 GHz – 4.4 GHz bands. However, Viavi said that there is the potential for interference from the edges of these bands, which can be mitigated by testing and adjusting both the radio altimeter and 5G networks before live commercial deployment. Viavi has made a testbed for the same. The testbed consists of VIAVI ALT-9000 for testing any format of radio altimeter system as it is capable of providing altitude simulations with true RF time delay and path loss models. The VIAVI ALT-9000 is capable of identifying any vulnerability that can be caused by 5G interference. The testbed further includes VIAVI OneAdvisor 800. This product from the company is capable of delivering real-time spectrum analysis for the 5G C-band range of frequency with 3D and 2D spectrogram plots. Lastly, the testbed includes the VIAVI Ranger, which offers broadband recording and playback of RF signal environments. This testbed will allow Viavi to comprehensively test any interference, if any, caused to the radio altimeters inside the aircraft by the 5G C-band spectrum. |

| Vodafone Retiring 3G Fully to Make Way for 4G, 5G With Full Force Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:23 PM PST
The legacy 3G networks of British telecom giant are going to start retiring by next year. This will be due to the company's strategy for enhancing the 4G and 5G experience of its users. Repurposing of the 3G spectrum would help the telco in adding capacity and it is finally happening after the use of 3G networks for over 17 years. The company's decision has arrived for 3G due to the falling demand for the network legacy network service. According to Vodafone, less than 4% of the data consumed on its network is through 3G networks compared to the 30% in 2016. Vodafone to Inform 3G Customers to Upgrade to 4G or 5GAll the 3G customers of Vodafone in the UK will start receiving some sort of communication from the telco about the retirement of 3G networks. The telco will guide its customers to ensure that they don't have to face a lack of connectivity. Ahmed Essam, Vodafone UK, CEO said that while 3G has connected so many customers, 4G and 5G networks are the future. Essam added that Vodafone will start communicating with the 3G customers and help them with everything including upgrading their smartphone. In fact, the telco will also ask the customers to check in on their friends and family. To reach Net Zero by 2027, it is important for Vodafone to retire 3G networks. Old 3G equipment uses a lot of energy and doesn't deliver a very decent experience when it comes to data and voice calling both. Vodafone UK will take the help of Vodafone Group which has done this sort of a thing in Germany and Italy. There are people who risk being left disconnected due to the retirement of old 3G networks next year. Affordable 4G smartphones are widely available across the UK markets and the only thing that the customers need is guidance from the companies. |

Post the consumption of fair-usage-policy (FUP) data for the day, the internet speed for the users drop to 80 Kbps. Users get unlimited voice calling benefits along with a total of 1GB of data. It is a plan suitable for people who just want to keep their SIM active. But it would be a hassle to keep recharging every five days once the plan expires. These are the two prepaid plans offered by the telco under Rs 50. Neither of the plans offers users SMS benefits, which makes sense for the price they are coming at. If you are looking for a plan under Rs 100 with slightly more benefits, the Rs 99 plan will make for a great option.
