| OTT Industry in India Set to Witness a Boom Over Next Decade Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:29 AM PST
The Indian OTT streaming industry is all set on the path of major growth in the upcoming decade. It is expected that the industry will grow to $13-15 billion over the next ten years at a CAGR of 22%- 25%, as suggested by a joint report on media and entertainment. A report from the OTT industry body CII and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has informed that the Over-The-Top or OTT industry is one of the most rapidly growing industries in India, with over 40 platforms currently providing vastly varied content. The Growth of OTT Industry in IndiaAccording to a report from PTI, the massive growth in the industry has been made possible by various factors such as the introduction of affordable high-speed mobile internet, the doubling of internet users in the last six years and even an increase in the number of users opting for digital payments. In addition to this, the global OTT leaders such as Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video offer pricing specially curated for India, which is about 70% – 90% less than what it is in the USA. Moreover, there has been a significant increase in investments in Indian original content. The major OTT platforms in India include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Sony Liv, Alt Balaji, Zee5 Premium and EROS Now. The report also said that strong content always catches more eyeballs suggesting that Indian OTT can offer content to international markets as well by targeting the Indian users abroad or population with similarity in the language. The OTT industry in India has also been aided by the dominant presence of youth in the population, as 50% – 55% of the population comprises citizens under the age of 30. The report mentioned that the OTT industry has grown into the scaling stage from its early stage as it has transitioned into the SVOD model from the AVOD model. Users are now interested in investing in premium and original content. The industry is all set to enter its mass stage, which will result in cord-cutting of Pay-Tv, deeper penetration of SVOD model in the country and people subscribing to multiple OTT platforms at once. Furthermore, the pricing of these services in India has been made affordable to drive adoption. Moreover, OTT platforms can also focus on targeting regional content as about 56% of the Indian population has a regional language that is absolutely untapped in terms of content. |

| BSNL’s Homegrown 4G Would Lead to Indigenous 5G Too Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:21 AM PST
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecommunications service provider (TSP), is trying to come out with 4G using homegrown equipment and core. Earlier, the government nominees on the board had said no to the upgradation of 13,533 in western and southern India to 4G because Nokia was going to be the partner for equipment. Thus, BSNL is currently working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for rolling out homegrown 4G. It has resulted in more delays for the company to rollout out 4G networks while the other telcos have started upgrading the network to make it 5G ready. 4G Delay Could Still Work in Favour of BSNLWhile there was a delay in launching 4G, if BSNL can deliver a quality network experience to the users by 2023 with its 4G networks, it would be a game-changer for the telco. BSNL is currently in the trial phase with TCS. Once the trials are successfully completed and the tech's Proof-of-Concept (PoC) is generated, it would become easy for BSNL to rollout 4G within ten months in most parts of the country. However, when BSNL goes to launch 5G NSA (non-standalone), the telco would be doing that using 4G core developed within India. This would make BSNL's networks very secure for the users and also keep the nation's security intact. Other telcos would be taking the help of Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung for rolling out 5G NSA. BSNL can market its network services as 'Made in India' with all the future generation networks. However, it would mean that the telco will have to mostly wait longer than the private operators to launch new technology services as well as face higher costs for network deployment as there is no Indian vendor manufacturing at scale to bring the cost down. Regardless, BSNL will have something that the private operators don't, and it would make all the difference if the telco could deliver consistent and quality services in most parts of the country. |

Apple is expected to launch its new generation AirPods Pro in 2022, and the rumour mill has it that it will come with features that have never been seen before on AirPods. While that is not surprising, it is definitely worth taking a look at what these new features are. According to the famous and trustworthy Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the AirPods Pro 2022 or AirPods Pro 2 will come with support for Lossless audio as well as a charging case that will be able to emit a sound for location discovery purposes. AirPods Pro 2 to Feature New Selling Points That Will Drive Up Demand: KuoAccording to a note to investors from Kuo (via MacRumors), Apple will launch the new AirPods with new selling points that will drive up the demand for the new truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones from the Cupertino tech giant. Apple's Find My app might be able to integrate with the upcoming generation AirPods Pro 2 charging case. This will make it easier for the users to discover the location of the charging case of AirPods Pro 2 in case they leave it at a point of their house or office or anywhere they can't find it. If this really happens, Apple users in the future will be able to identify and find their earbuds as well as the charging case separately. But not just this, Apple's new AirPods are also expected to come with support for Lossless audio. This will be a major upgrade as none of the existing audio products from Apple, including the AirPods Max, AirPods Pro, or the recently launched third-generation AirPods, support Lossless audio. As per Kuo, the AirPods Pro 2 are expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2022 and will also feature a completely new design. All these factors make the alleged AirPods Pro 2 a very exciting product in the making. |
| BSNL Announce New 90 Days of Additional Validity With Prepaid Plan Posted: 02 Jan 2022 10:14 PM PST
Right at the start of 2022, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced a new offer for prepaid plan users. This is a limited time offer that will stay valid until January 15, 2022. The offer will bundle in additional 90 days of validity for the users with their prepaid plan. But the offer is not applicable on all the prepaid plans but only a single high-denomination voucher that many might not buy right off the bat. BSNL Prepaid Plan That Will Come With 90 Days of Additional ValidityBharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is offering its Rs 2399 prepaid plan with 90 days of additional validity. This plan brings users unlimited voice calling, 100 SMS/day, and 3GB of daily data. Normally this plan comes with a validity of 365 days. But right now, under the offer, users will get 90 days of additional validity with this plan which will make the new service validity 455 days. In months, that would be around 15 months which is a long time. The best thing about the Rs 2399 prepaid plan is that you don't need to worry about data much as it comes with 3GB of daily data, and then with this large service validity, it becomes a compelling offer from the company despite the absence of 4G networks in the country. Note that BSNL's prepaid plans are currently the most affordable in the country and, with offers such as this, become more attractive. The state-run telco is also working on rolling out its homemade 4G networks throughout the country. If you are looking for a prepaid plan that comes with long validity such as this and is also very affordable, there's a Rs 1499 plan that you can choose. With this plan, users get 24GB of total data, unlimited voice calling, and 100 SMS/day. The Rs 1499 plan from BSNL comes with a total validity of 365 days. |
| 5G Delay Won’t Happen in U.S. Despite Aviation Safety Concerns Posted: 02 Jan 2022 09:32 PM PST
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as well as the United States (U.S.) Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg had asked the telecom operators to delay the deployment of commercial 5G services using C-band spectrum for no more than two weeks. But the U.S. telecom operators have denied the request. As per Reuters, AT&T and Verizon, two of the biggest telecom operators in the U.S. have rejected the request for a delay to launch 5G as planned on January 5, 2022. However, the telcos have accepted that they will take temporary safeguards. Won't Deploy 5G Around Airports, but Won't Limit Elsewhere: U.S. OperatorsThe U.S. telcos have conveyed through a joint statement that they will not deploy 5G around airports for the time being. They have refrained from limiting the launch of 5G using the C-band spectrum elsewhere in the country. The statement from the companies said that it would be irresponsible abdication if they avoid launching commercial 5G on January 5, 2022. For the unaware, the aviation industry, as well as FAA, have raised concerns around the launch of 5G using the C-band spectrum. The reason cited by the authorities is that 5G airwaves in that particular frequency band would interfere with the sensitive aircraft electronics such as radio altimeters which could disrupt flights. The telcos noted that there's an exclusion zone in France and if the U.S. airlines are permitted to operate flights in France at regular, there's no reason why the same operating conditions can't exist in the U.S. C-Band spectrum's frequencies range between 4 GHz and 8 GHz. These high-frequency airwaves would allow the U.S. operators to launch 5G for masses in the country and expand their network coverage significantly. At the same time, with such high frequencies, telcos can deliver the true power of 5G to their consumers and thus it is understandable why they don't want to delay the launch of 5G using the C-band spectrum. |
