Cheapest Broadband Plans

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India have been providing plans ranging across multiple price tags as per the suitability of the customer. The demand for broadband connectivity has significantly gone up ever since the pandemic hit and people were forced to use the internet for working and learning online. Even though ISPs have high-end plans offering up to 1 Gbps of internet speed, there is a certain section of the user base that either does not need or cannot afford such expensive plans. This category might include students, individual users or even small families, who might be in the market for something cheaper. Mentioned below are the cheapest plans offered by major ISPs such as Reliance Jio, Airtel, ACT and their details in 2022.

30 Mbps Plan from Jio

The cheapest plan offered by Jio offers a connectivity speed of 30 Mbps. JioFiber provides the 30 Mbps internet speed data plan at the price of Rs 399 per month. The FUP limit set on this plan is 3300Gb or 3.3TB. Using the 30 Mbps plan from JioFiber, customers can get access to smooth and seamless internet across multiple devices. Along with high-speed internet, users also get a symmetrical download and upload speed from the provider. There are no OTT benefits included with the plan but is suitable for users looking for a cheap plan.

Affordable Plan from Airtel

Airtel is one of the most popular brands when it comes to the list of ISPs in India. With plans ranging up to 1 Gbps, Airtel does have cheaper plans for its subscribers as well. The Fibre Optic internet connection from Airtel allows one of the fastest broadband connections and users can get access to the 'Basic' pack which provides 40 Mbps of internet speed at a monthly cost of Rs 499 exclusive of taxes. Users get 3.3TB or 3300GB of monthly fair-usage-policy (FUP) data with this plan. The plan offers unlimited internet up to the set limit as well as unlimited local and STD calls. Airtel also provides 'Airtel Thanks Benefits' with its broadband plans which in this case includes a subscription to Wynk Music and Shaw Academy.

Cheapest Broadband Plan from ACT

The cheapest plan from ISP based in Bengaluru is a 40 Mbps unlimited data plan called ACT Basic. Using state-of-the-art fibre technology, the connection provides incredible speed and equal upload and download speed. Users can get ACT Basic pack from the provider at a monthly cost of Rs 549. The FUP data limit levied is 500GB post which the internet works at speed of 512 Kbps. Users can also get free trials to some of the Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms and various add-ons with these packs. It is to be noted that this plan is for the city of Bengaluru, and it may vary across the country.

Netplus Broadband

Netplus is another ISP that offers its services in seven Indian states in the North. Netplus can provide connectivity with up to 1 Gbps of internet speed. However, the company also provides a truly unlimited plan offering 40 Mbps of internet speed at a price tag of Rs 499 per month which is exclusive of taxes. Users get unlimited data and calling benefits with this plan. Netplus offers only one 40 Mbps plan and OTT subscriptions are available with only higher-priced plans offered by the ISP. Data offered by Netplus is truly unlimited and no FUP data is levied.

BSNL Provides These Two Affordable Plans

Lastly, the public telecommunications company BSNL under Bharat Fibre Broadband provides two broadband plans for its users who want cheaper options. The 'Fibre Basic' and 'Fibre Basic Plus' plans from BSNL provide 30 Mbps and 60 Mbps of internet speed respectively. The Fibre Basic plan comes at a price of Rs 449 per month whereas the Fibre Basic Plus costs users Rs 599 a month. Both these prices are exclusive of GST and both these plans come with a FUP limit of 3300GB or 3.3TB. Beyond the data limit, users can enjoy an internet speed of 2 Mbps and both these plans also offer a 90% discount of up to Rs 500 on rent on the first bill.

Let’s See How Far iPhone Has Come Since Its Launch

Posted: 08 Jan 2022 07:37 AM PST

iPhone

Apple unveiled iPhone on January 9, 2007, integrating three products — mobile phone, iPod and internet communications device — into one compact and lightweight portable gadget. Apple iPhone featured an entirely new user interface based on a multi-touch display and software that allowed users to control the device with their fingertips. Slowly, the tech giant ushered in a new era of software and sophistication never seen before in mobile devices, dramatically redefining what smartphones can do.

Here we are at the 15th anniversary of Apple iPhone launch. The world is awaiting iPhone 14 variant anticipating interesting features. Meanwhile, it would be fascinating to know a few features that is now widespread, but lacked in the first iPhone when it was initially released.

Top iPhone Features Today

Copy-Paste feature – Interestingly, iPhone didn't get the ability to copy-paste until 2009.

Video Recording – The first iPhone could click photos, but the video recording was added to the iPhone in 2009.

App Store – Calendar, Calculator, Phone, Notes, Weather and Photos came pre-installed on the first iPhone, but there was no official option to install third-party apps until the App Store started in July 2008. There were provisions for developers to provide web-based applications, which didn't get much acceptance due to below-average performance.

Front camera – Selfie is comparatively a new-age concept. Apple iPhone first generation had no front camera. In reality, until the iPhone 4 was released in 2010 with FaceTime video chatting, there was no front camera in iPhone first generation.

GPS – The original iPhone came with a Google Maps software pre-installed, it there was no turn-by-turn directions as the device lacked a GPS. Apple integrated GPS in iPhone 3G in 2008.

Flashlight – There was no built-in flashlight on the first iPhone because it didn’t have an LED flash. When the App Store appeared, some flashlight apps were released that simulated a flashlight by displaying a white screen at maximum brightness.

Home screen wallpaper – The magic of home screen wallpapers did not appear in iPhones until iOS 4, released in 2010. The user could not install a custom Home Screen wallpaper on the iPhone, and the software upgrade did not support the original iPhone.

Photo messaging – The first iPhone allowed users to send text messages via SMS, but there was no provision to send image/photo. MMS support was added to iPhone OS 3.0 in 2009 and it was limited to the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Metaverse Could Soon be a Reality as CES Witnesses New Innovations

Posted: 08 Jan 2022 02:21 AM PST

Metaverse

The Consumer Electronics Show happening in Las Vegas has witnessed the beginning of something remarkable. The metaverse now has a more realistic edge as a jacket equipped with sensors that allow users to feel punches and even hugs in virtual reality, was introduced as the latest innovation. Founder of the Spain based start-up Owo, Jose Fuertes talked about the metaverse being just avatars if users can't feel anything. Owo is the company that has built the said jacket.

The New Technology

One of the most eye-catching themes of the premiere electronics show of the world was 'metaverse' which can be defined as a parallel universe where human, augmented and virtual realities meet. Multiple start-ups exhibited their innovations that included headsets, computers and other gears that will ensure enhancement in time spent in virtual reality. The jacket introduced by Owo has the capacity to make users feel the gunshots, the wind, someone grabbing their arm and even a hug from a loved one allowing for an immersive experience on either video games or metaverse.

According to a report from AFP, the tight-fitting jacket features a band that holds on to the skin and has sensors that operate in synchronization with the mobile application, allowing users to choose the intensity of the sensation before going into virtual reality. Fuertes described the goal of the start-up as "to turn the virtual into reality with a second skin." The wearable from Owo will be priced below $450 and is expected to hit the market in the latter half of 2022.

State of the Virtual Reality

As far as virtual reality is considered, the technology is currently used in video games for the majority of its part. However, the potential of virtual reality could include many things such as having the experience of the museum or landmarks in the distant cities all while sitting at home or even getting a full theatre experience of a feature film from the comforts of the home. The companies including Meta and HTC have been heavily investing the virtual reality headsets but haven't been able to come up with a solution where the gears can be equipped for a longer period of time.

However, according to the Touchcast chief and founder Edo Segal, nothing can stop the metaverse but it might be a while before metaverse becomes real. There have been reports by industry trackers, however, which suggest that the sale of virtual reality gears have gone up significantly ever since the pandemic hit as people became dependent upon the internet for most of their learning, working and leisure activities.

Mid-Range Smartphone Is Your Best Bet for Long-Term, Let’s Talk

Posted: 08 Jan 2022 01:14 AM PST

Mid-Range

Mid-range smartphones are getting packed with more and more features every year that goes by. A mid-range smartphone today would be a flagship three years back. The power of the chipsets and just what the cameras in the mid-range can produce today is excellent. Here's how I see it, if you are someone who is a rational consumer and wants to purchase a smartphone for long-term (at least or upwards of 3 years) but also wants all the useful features with a decent chipset, you don't really need a premium or ultra-premium smartphone.

Smartphone Advertisements Has People Spending Stupid Sums of Money on Devices

Don't get me wrong here; if you are someone who is a tech enthusiast and want a flagship because you want the experience, you should go for a premium or ultra-premium device. But don't go for a very expensive device just because of the features or power it brings to the table.

Understand the kind of needs you have. A majority of the market can easily survive with a mid-range device in the long run. You get good cameras, at least two years worth of major OS updates and three-year security updates with most of the smartphone brands.

I am not going to name a device, but spending more than 40,000 on a smartphone is not worth it for most. Especially for features such as 5G, or a more powerful chipset, better cameras, don't spend extra money when all you want to do is browse the internet, make calls, and click basic pictures.

There are pretty great options from all the brands in the mid-range category that can help you with all your basic needs over the long run and also give you a great smartphone experience. The utility of the money that you pay for premium or ultra-premium smartphones is just not there!

Netflix ISP Speed Index for India Same for November as in October 2021

Posted: 08 Jan 2022 12:18 AM PST

Netflix

Netflix has released its monthly ISP Speed Index report for November 2021. The figures and data of this report are identical to the report of October 2021. The same names are in the top category and the same in the last. Netflix collects speed data and shares it with users so that they can make the smart choice while choosing an internet service provider (ISP). Choosing an ISP from the top category is usually the right thing to do because it allows users to get the best out of their streaming activities.

Netflix ISP Speed Index for India for November

In the top category with 3.6 Mbps, there were nine ISPs including Jio Giga Fiber, 7 Star Digital, Airtel, Alliance Broadband, Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT), D-VoIS, Excitel Broadband, Hathway, and Tata Sky Broadband.

In the second rank, with 3.4 Mbps were You Broadband, One Broadband, Syscon Infoway, Spectra, and GTPL. The third rank with 3.2 Mbps only had two companies including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Tikona. Lastly, in the fourth rank with 2.8 Mbps was Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).

It is a little odd to see BSNL ranked much lower than a few of the lesser-known names on the list. BSNL is the king of ISPs, having the largest wireline subscriber market share in India. However, the state-run telco is finding it a little hard to expand as aggressively as Jio and Airtel are doing. BSNL doesn't have the money to incur the necessary capex.

Most of the money that BSNL has will go towards the launch of 4G networks and fast expansion throughout the country. If things remain the same and BSNL doesn't improve service quality, it won't be long before the private telecom operators would take over in the wireline services category. BSNL needs to upgrade broadband services to fiber as fast as possible to remain at the top.

Why India Still Has 2G in 2022

Posted: 07 Jan 2022 11:30 PM PST

India 2G

India, one of the biggest markets for telecom services with more than a billion customers still has millions of people users 2G network for communication purposes. 2G is not fit for internet browsing, but only voice calling and SMS. Even when 4G services are readily available almost everywhere, there are affordable 4G smartphones, and cheap tariffs, why India still has 2G networks?

It would be safe to assume that 2G network users are old people who used 2G services when it was launched. Most of these consumers might feel like they don't need anything out of their mobile except for voice calls. Thus, they don't really have any incentive to upgrade to 4G networks.

2G Has Become a Money Draining Part of the Sector

2G services don't really bring in the average revenue per user (ARPU) figure for the telcos that they would like. Further, with 2G there's one more big problem — the telcos can't upsell their other services as it requires a steady internet and a smartphone for the customers to be able to consume them in the first place.

If you are wondering why are the telcos are not simply shutting down 2G, here's the thing. All the telecom operators have millions of 2G customers, except for Jio. Reliance Jio only has 4G networks PAN-India.

One way to look at this would be if the other operators shut down 2G, the next cheaper alternative for the consumers would be either Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) with 3G services but a poor network or Jio. Here, Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel stand to lose the most.

Bharti Airtel wouldn't be worried about a declining user base as long as low ARPU customers are going out. But Vodafone Idea would want to cling on to these customers as it already has a severely lower subscriber base in comparison to other private telecom operators.

Further, if the telcos were to shut down 2G right away, there are a lot of people who still don't have smartphones that can support 4G. Thus to ensure that all the customers are getting network connectivity, the telcos can't really shut down 2G any day they like.

Note that just by paying Rs 120 more, you can get another 365-day prepaid plan from Jio, but with a free subscription to Disney+ Hotstar Mobile plan for a year. Jio offers a prepaid plan for Rs 3119 and while it offers the same validity as of Rs 2999 plan along with a major over-the-top (OTT) benefit, note that it offers much lesser data. With the Rs 3119 plan, users get 740GB of data, while with the Rs 2999 plan, users will get 912.5GB of data. Then one can't ignore the 20% cashback that will be offered with the Rs 2999 plan.

There are three more prepaid plans offering 20% cashback to the users from Reliance Jio. These plans come for Rs 299, Rs 666, and Rs 719. The Rs 666 and Rs 719 are two of the most popular prepaid plans offered by the telco. The Rs 2999 plan from Jio is a fresh offering that certainly many would appreciate.
