| BlackBerry 5G Is Dead as OnwardMobility Loses Rights to Use the Name Posted: 11 Feb 2022 07:27 AM PST
Soon after a month of OnwardMobility announcing that a new Blackberry phone is on the card for 2022, the Texas-based partner of BlackBerry seems to have lost its rights to BlackBerry's name. OnwardMobility became the latest licensee of the BlackBerry brand in August 2020. A blog post released last month, titled 'Contrary to popular belief, we are not dead', announced that OnwardMobility would launch an ultra-secure 5G enterprise smartphone with the keyboard in 2022. A similar announcement about Blackberry 5G came up in the first half of 2021. However, the plan did not surface. According to OnwardMobility, the challenges in logistics during the pandemic delayed the plan. Now the latest update came from AndroidPolice, which said that OnwardMobility is not planning to work on the BlackBerry 5G project any longer after it loses the right to use the BlackBerry name. The publication quoted the founder of Crackberry, Kevin Michaluk, and other sources for the news. In his quote, Michaluk speculated that this decision to remove BlackBerry entirely could be down to CEO John Chen, who prefer the smartphone brand to vanish. BlackBerry Recently Sold Its Mobile Technology PatentsThe speculation cannot be entirely wrong considering that BlackBerry is looking to distance itself from its identity as a smartphone maker. Not long ago, the company sold its legacy patents, including mobile technologies, to Catapult IP Innovations Inc. for $600 million. The company revealed that the sale consisted of its non-core patent assets. In the deal, Catapult IP Innovations Inc. acquired BlackBerry's patents related to mobile devices, wireless networking IPs and messaging. BlackBerry will get $450 million in cash and a promissory note for $150 million in the sale. Although the patent sale will not affect the existing users, BlackBerry has already stopped providing support for BlackBerry phones running BB10 OS. In an official confirmation, Blackberry said it is halting all supports provided for its classic devices running BlackBerry 10, 7.1 OS and earlier. This indicated that the older devices not running on Android will no longer be able to use data, access the internet, send text messages, or make calls. The last version of the Blackberry operating system was launched in 2013. |

| Vodafone Idea (Vi) Promoters Disappointing Investors Posted: 11 Feb 2022 04:42 AM PST
Vodafone Idea (Vi) promoters, including the Aditya Birla Group (ABG) and the Vodafone Group Plc of the United Kingdom (UK), were expected to infuse capital into the company. However, months have gone by, and not a single promoter has infused any capital in the telco. On top of that, Vi has not been able to secure investment from any outside investor yet, and it is not a good sign for the upcoming 5G spectrum auctions. During the spectrum auctions, the telecom operators will require thousands of crores for upfront payment to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Thus, Vi not performing financially well for the last few years coupled with no outside capital means the telco either has to increase its debt further or not participate in 5G spectrum auctions in full capacity. A few months are still left for the spectrum auctions, so Vi would be sitting fingers crossed about getting an investor or multiple investors onboard. It's not just about the spectrum auctions, though. Vi won't be able to increase its capex levels to where Airtel and Jio are at if it doesn’t secure any investment. This will result in poor 4G coverage in comparison to the competitors, which will ultimately add to the subscriber churn rate, especially after tariff hikes. Not to forget that the Indian government will be the largest promoter in the company once the shares are allotted post the confirmation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Vodafone Idea Waiting to Get an Investment While Airtel Got PlentyVodafone Idea has been on the lookout to raise capital for years now, but the telco has found no success to that end. On the other side, Bharti Airtel is raising capital again and again. Airtel raised Rs 21,000 crore via a rights issue in October 2021; then, in January 2022, the telco got a $1 billion investment from Google, and now, Airtel's board has approved for raising more funds via debt instruments. It is honestly sad to see Vodafone Idea struggling because of not sufficient cash. The telco has the potential of acquiring customers from Airtel and Jio; however, it can't raise the capex levels because it has no money. Even after so much help from the government, the promoters haven't shown any initiative. Note that before the relief measures for the telecom sector was announced, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, had offered to sell his stake in Vodafone Idea to the government. No one should blame Mr Birla for being a businessman. Almost any sane business-minded person would have sold his/her stake in Vi before the relief measures were announced. However, after all the help that the telco has received in the last few months coupled with the prepaid tariff hikes, it is strange to see why none of the promoters is showing any belief in the company. Until the time Vi promoters don't make a move, the outside investors won't show any confidence either. |

OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite is expected to feature an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC under the hood. This confirms the fact that the device will have 5G support. The device is expected to arrive with two storage variants – 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB RAM and internal storage. The handset might be backed by a 5000mAh battery and support 33W fast charge technology. As far as the camera module of the device is considered, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite is expected to come with a triple rear camera setup headlined by a 64MP Omnivision sensor. The device will also feature two secondary cameras – a 2MP macro and a 2MP mono sensor. The front of the device is expected to feature a 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor. Moreover, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite might come under the Rs 20,000 price segment. |
| WhatsApp Working on a New Voice Calling Interface Posted: 11 Feb 2022 01:35 AM PST
WhatsApp, one of the most popular online texting applications in the world, is working on a new interface for voice calling for select beta Android users. The new interface would, of course, be rolled out for both Android as well as iOS users, but for now, it is being tested with the beta Android users. A WABetaInfo report suggests that WhatsApp for Android beta 2.22.5.4 has brought the update, which carries the new voice calling interface for select users. The new interface is geared to make the app look more aesthetic and easy in functionality. Overall, from the image shared by WABetaInfo, the interface rather looks modern and elegant. Waveforms for Voice CallsTo understand who is speaking on a group voice call, WhatsApp is working on bringing waveforms so that users can identify the speaker. Currently, there's no way to identify which user is speaking during a call, but with this new interface, users might be able to do that soon. At the same time, WhatsApp is working on a screen that would respond to the users when they come for reviewing their account ban requests. To experience all of these features in the beta version, Android users need to go to the Google Play Beta programme and download the latest beta version of WhatsApp for their device. Alternatively, users can download the beta app in APK from APKMirror. The new interface makes sense as more and more people are leveraging WhatsApp calling for a crystal clear voice calling experience inside their homes. With a good Wi-Fi connection, users can easily make WhatsApp groups as well as individual calls which is a great convenience for many. While WhatsApp is currently testing the new interface in the Android beta version, iOS users don't need to worry as it will arrive for them soon too. The release of the new interface with the stable version of the application looks unlikely in the near future. |

| Airtel Networks Were Down for a Brief on Friday, Restored Now Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:09 PM PST
Bharti Airtel users across the country reported they weren't able to access the network of the company for the internet. The Downdetector data also suggests that around 11 AM on Friday, a lot of people were making complaints about Bharti Airtel's network going down. However, in a recent tweet, Bharti Airtel has clarified that there was a brief disruption in the internet services on Friday, but everything is normal now. It was indeed a very short disruption, but long enough for Twitter users to start making memes on the situation. Note that there are users still complaining that their internet services haven't been restored. There's no confirmation on whether the disruption was only there in select areas or was it across the country. Reliance Jio Networks Had Also Gone Down a Few Days BackA few days back, Reliance Jio's networks had also gone down, but it was only for the users living in Mumbai. Jio had given affected users two days of complimentary service. However, it is unlikely that Airtel customers are going to get such compensation from the company as the issue was short-lived. Airtel users would rather be happy that they weren't put in a situation by the company where they had to get compensation from the company. The downdetector also suggests that the number of complaints has dipped majorly by 12:30 PM, and that is a good thing indeed. Many people said that not just their mobile internet, but even fiber internet connection stopped working. Hopefully, the network services have resumed for every Airtel user in the country, and it doesn't happen again. At the time of writing, Airtel's stock is trading at 1.33% in the red at Rs 714.45. This is a surprise as the telco has reported strong performance during Q3 FY22, with its average revenue per user (ARPU) figure rising to Rs 163 during the quarter. If you are still facing problems with your Airtel connection, you should check with the customer care team of the company. |
| Apple Brings New Solution to Counter Stalking With AirTags Posted: 10 Feb 2022 10:14 PM PST
Apple AirTags, a useful tool created to help users keep a track of their belongings was unfortunately being used by some people to stalk others. There have been many cases when an unwanted AirTag was found inside cars, bags, and more by users who claimed they were being stalked through the gadget. It is a serious threat for people who are being tracked as their home address and more could be revealed due to AirTag tracking. How Apple is Addressing the AirTags Stalking IssueTo address the issue, Apple has rolled out a solution or rather an update which will let users know if they were being tracked by an unwanted AirTag. In a blog, the Cupertino tech giant said users will be alerted if they were being tracked through an unwanted AirTag. But only iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 users will be able to use Precision Finding to find the AirTag that is tracking them. Apple will be adjusting the tone sequence for making use of the loudest tones so that users can easily find the unwanted AirTag in their proximity. Note that if someone is found guilty of unwanted tracking, he/she may be penalised as it is a criminal offence. However, there's nothing Android users would be able to do if an AirTag was being used to track them. This is an issue that needs to be addressed too. While the technology of AirTag in itself is not bad, there should be countermeasures available to solve major problems as unwanted tracking for everyone. Hopefully, Apple is working to ensure that this sort of solution is also available for Android users. Android devices can't make use of the Find My network or Precision Finding to ensure that they are not being tracked. AirTag is still a pre-mature technology and with time, it will get better as Apple keeps on addressing the existing issues. |
| BSNL Disney+ Hotstar Benefit Offered With Two Broadband Plans Posted: 10 Feb 2022 09:01 PM PST
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) offers plenty of options to consumers when it comes to fiber broadband services. The state-run telco offers Disney+ Hotstar Premium benefit with two of its high-end plans. These broadband plans come for Rs 1499 and Rs 999. Both are old plans but now come with a discount offer for new users. Check out the details of the plans below. BSNL Broadband Plan That Now Offers Disney+ Hotstar Premium Benefit
The Rs 1499 plan ships with 300 Mbps of speed both for downloading and uploading. Users get 4TB or 4000GB of data with this broadband plan. Further, there's a free of cost fixed-line voice calling connection included for the users. As mentioned above, new users on this plan will get a 90% discount on the first bill of up to Rs 500. The internet speed would drop to 4 Mbps post the consumption of FUP data. BSNL calls its Rs 1499 plan the Fibre Ultra plan. The Rs 999 plan comes with 150 Mbps of speed and 2TB of monthly data. There are no other broadband plans from other internet service providers (ISPs) at this price range which bundle a free benefit of Disney+ Hotstar Premium. Sure, ISPs such as JioFiber and Airtel Xstream Fiber provide Disney+ Hotstar benefit, but it is not a premium subscription. So if you are looking for a broadband plan with this particular OTT benefit, only one BSNL Bharat Fibre plan can provide you with it. There is one other OTT plan offered by BSNL Bharat Fibre for Rs 749. This plan bundles in plenty of OTT benefits for the users, but not of the Disney+ Hotstar Premium. For the same price of Rs 1499, JioFiber also offers its 300 Mbps plan with multiple OTT benefits, do check that plan out too. |
| Vi Postpaid Plan for Users Who Don’t Want to Worry About Data Posted: 10 Feb 2022 08:35 PM PST
Vodafone Idea (Vi) is the only telecom operator in India which provides users with a postpaid plan where they don't have to worry about the consumption of mobile data. Vi's postpaid plans are considered some of the best in the industry as the telco offers the kind of benefits that none of the operators does. Today, we will be talking about one such postpaid plan from the company. With this plan, users get truly unlimited data and it might not be more expensive than your broadband plan either. Here's what you should know. Vi Postpaid Plan Which Offers Truly Unlimited DataWhile there are a few such plans, we are only going to be looking at the most affordable one in the lot. For Rs 699, users get unlimited voice calling along with unlimited data. There's no fair-usage policy (FUP) on data restricting the users from consuming data to a certain limit. The only issue with this plan is that it offers 100 SMS per month, which is just not sufficient for many. There are some over-the-top (OTT) benefits included such as a free one-year membership of Amazon Prime which normally costs Rs 1499. Further, users also get a Disney+ Hotstar Mobile subscription worth Rs 499 for free. Lastly, Vi will also bundle its own OTT Platform namely Vi Movies & TV for the users. As mentioned above, this is not the only plan from the telco which offers users truly unlimited data. There are many, but amongst them all, the Rs 699 postpaid plan is the most affordable one that offers truly unlimited data. All the other plans fall in the REDX category and cost more than Rs 1,000 per month at least. But then there are separate benefits of using a REDX postpaid plan from Vodafone Idea. With REDX plans, the number of benefits that users get is more than what any other telecom operator offers in the country, but that is a topic for another day. |
| Reliance Jio Might be Very Worried About Airtel’s Rising RMS Posted: 10 Feb 2022 07:07 PM PST
Reliance Jio, India's number one telecom operator, might be worried about the rising revenue market share (RMS) of Bharti Airtel. The higher the average revenue per user (ARPU) figure for Airtel, the better will be the revenues. It is most likely that Airtel will outperform both Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) when it comes to RMS gains in the coming quarters. Gopal Vittal, CEO, Bharti Airtel, has already expressed that there's another tariff hike slated for 2022. With this, Airtel might be able to increase ARPU to Rs 200 levels. Bharti Airtel to Outperform Jio, Vi With the Help of Reducing SIM ConsolidationDuring the Q3 FY22, Airtel's revenues from the mobile business of India grew 5.9% to Rs 16,100 crore. This was a better figure than Jio and Vodafone Idea, both of whom reported around 3.3% growth in the same area. With another tariff hike in the future and the reducing SIM consolidation in the coming months, Airtel is likely to get the lead in gaining higher revenue market share (RMS), says ICICI Securities. The SIM consolidation levels are high right now because of the recent tariff hikes. But its effects will subside as low ARPU customers will be leaving the telco's network. Vittal said Airtel's RMS is at a lifetime high at nearly 36.9%. This isn't too far behind Jio's RMS of 40.2%, reported in the second quarter of FY22. All in all, Bharti Airtel is in a great position right now as the telco has started generating free cash flows, which will help in going ahead with organic deleveraging. Bharti Airtel's ARPU rose to Rs 163 during Q3 FY22 from Rs 153 in Q2 FY22. Analysts expect that the full impact of the prepaid tariff hikes during the quarter will be felt in Q4 FY22, which is certainly going to boos the ARPU of the telco further. Airtel's net profit sequentially fell 27% to Rs 830 crore during the quarter. |
| Broadband Plans Under Rs 1,000 With OTT Benefits Posted: 10 Feb 2022 05:39 PM PST
The popularity of OTT platforms in the country has been on a constant rise for quite some time now and the internet service providers (ISPs) of the country have been riding this high demand wave. The ISPs in the country offer broadband plans that come with added subscriptions to OTT platforms along with high-speed data. Although the expensive plans from the telcos offer a variety of bundled OTT platforms, there are a few plans that are comparatively cheaper. These plans from the ISPs offer good data benefits as well as are affordable and serve to the entertainment needs of the users. Mentioned below are the broadband plans offered by some of the major ISPs in the country under Rs 1,000 that come with OTT benefits. Jio's Base OTT Broadband PlanThe base OTT broadband plan and the only plan under Rs 1,000 from Jio is a 150 Mbps plan. One of the most reliable service providers in India, JioFiber offers a 150 Mbps internet speed data plan at the price of Rs 999 for a validity period of 30 days. The FUP limit set on this plan is 3300Gb or 3.3TB. Users get access to symmetrical upload and download speeds of 150 Mbps with this plan. The plan is listed as a popular plan on the website and offers subscriptions to 15 OTT platforms including yearlong access to Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Eros Now and more. Two Plans from BSNLThe state-owned telco, BSNL offers a couple of plans under Rs 1,000 that come with OTT benefits under its Bharat Fiber broadband connection. SuperStar Premium-1 plan from BSNL offers 100 Mbps of internet speed at the cost of Rs 749 per month.
