WhatsApp Starts Releasing Video and Voice Calls to Web and Desktop Users

Posted: 12 Feb 2022 06:40 AM PST

WhatsApp

WhatsApp's voice and video feature for desktop and web users will soon be available to all. According to a recent screenshot shared by the noted tipster Mukul Sharma, WhatsApp seems to have released the feature to a few users already.

WhatsApp revealed its plan to add video and voice calls to its web and desktop users in October 2020. Since then, the feature has been one of the most awaited ones. Beta testers already received the feature, and it seems like some non-beta testers too have started receiving the provision.

In the screenshot shared by the tipster Mukul Sharma, an icon for video and voice calls is seen next to the search icon on the top of the chat window. The screenshot seems to be from the browser version and not the WhatsApp web application.

Considering that the number of people sending voice notes and the preference for video calls have increased, this is a much-needed release from WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Brings a New Interface for WhatsApp Voice Group Calls

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has also started rolling out a new interface for voice calls. The new interface was spotted on the Android beta app. Many beta testers have already received the update, and it seems like more testers will start receiving the feature.

According to WABetaInfo, the release for Android 2.22.5.4., WhatApp is revamping the interface for the voice calls, especially for the voice group call. A screenshot shared shows the new interface of bringing voice waveforms for all participants during the call. The feature is not yet seen for iOS beta testers and may be expected soon.

WABetaInfo also spotted the ability to use wallpaper for voice calls, but it does not come with customization at the moment. The site hints at the feature’s availability for more testers in the upcoming week.

We also saw the global voice note player roll out last week for WhatsApp Desktop beta users. The feature will allow users to listen to voice notes when switching to a different chat. When you switch to another chat, the note continues to play with a new audio bar shows up at the bottom of your chat list. The audio bar helps the user control the voice note by using the playback button, and the progress bar will show when the voice notes end.

Overall, it is interesting to see that WhatsApp is on a release spree on its voice features, and the actual wait is to get them for all users.

BSNL Prepaid Plan With 100GB Data for 60 Days

Posted: 12 Feb 2022 06:13 AM PST

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), just like the private operators, offer consumers a prepaid plan that ships with 100GB of lump-sum data for 60 days validity. The state-run telco offers this plan for Rs 447, and it bundles a popular over-the-top (OTT) subscription of Eros Now Entertainment along with BSNL Tunes. This is not just a data voucher as it bundles 100 SMS/day along with unlimited voice calling for the users.

Post the consumption of fair-usage-policy (FUP) data; the internet speed will drop to 80 Kbps. The best thing about this plan is that users don't need to worry about a daily FUP limit. With this plan, they can use the 100GB data in a lump-sum manner.

With this plan, basically, one 1GB of data costs Rs 4.47, which is quite cheap. Further, 100GB of data for 60 days is a good deal for Indian users any day. The only thing is BSNL users don't get 4G networks across the country. But this won't be for long as the state-run telco is in the process to rollout 4G in India.

BSNL Rs 247 Plan Makes for a Great Option Too

If you want a slightly more affordable plan like the Rs 447 option, you can go for the Rs 247 plan from BSNL. With this plan, the benefits reduce in half. The Rs 247 plan comes with 50GB of lump-sum data along with unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. The validity of this plan is 30 days. This plan also bundles a free Eros Now Entertainment subscription along with BSNL Tunes.

These are two of the best lump-sum data plans in the industry at the moment. With the backing of 4G networks, the value of these plans would increase multifold. Even the private operators offer such plans, but they are obviously more expensive than the ones mentioned above. There are more affordable prepaid plans from BSNL available that you can check out from the telco's website and mobile app.

Android 12 Update

Good news comes in for Android users as Google has announced an interesting feature from Android 12 will be coming to other Android devices as well. With the release of Android 12, Google introduced a new feature called dynamic colour theming system which the company has promised that it will be bringing on other Android devices as well. For those unaware, with the introduction of Android 12 and Material You, Google released a new dynamic colour theming system feature that is capable of extracting colours from a wallpaper on the user's device. The feature can then further spread the extracted colours across the app UI elements and hence, enhancing the aesthetic.

Details on the New Feature

The colour change can be spotted on any app on the device that supports Material You including other interfaces across the OS such as settings, icons, Quick Settings tiles and more. The Android users will soon be able to experience this feature on their devices as currently, the dynamic colour theming system is only available on the Google Pixel series of smartphones.

Google has also announced a list of brands that will support the Material You on their smartphones when the users receive the Android 12 update. The list includes all the major brands such as Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Xiaomi and Tecno. It is to be noted that Samsung and Xiaomi already offer a version of their own theme options to the users of their smartphones.

However, Google has stated that it will take some time to roll out the feature across all Android devices as it is necessary to check the applicability of the feature across all smartphones from different brands. Further, the OEMs will also need time to roll out the feature on their respective smartphones. According to a product manager on Android, Rohan Shah, Android 12 is expected to arrive in a few months and OEMs are already working in collaboration to bring the feature on the devices to enhance the overall user experience. Even though it might take a little while, it is an exciting feature that Android users will be able to experience.

Understanding Wi-Fi Security: Overview of Wi-Fi Encryption Standards, How to Choose the Right Encryption Settings

Posted: 12 Feb 2022 12:24 AM PST

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi encryption standards evolve, with new ones emerging and the old ones becoming obsolete. As of 2022, WPA3 or Wi-Fi Protected Access Version 3 is the best Wi-Fi security standard.

To understand the encryption standards better, let's comprehend several variations of the WPA3 standards available, including WPA3-Personal, WPA3-Enterprise and WPA3-Enterprise with 192-bit Mode.

As the name indicates, WPA3-Personal is designated for individual and home Wi-Fi users. It allows the user to choose their password.

WPA3 Enterprise is for enterprise uses, primarily enforces minimum 128-bit authentication encryption, 256-bit key derivation encryption, and the use of an authentication server instead of a password. It also features Protected Management Frames for hack protection, among other authentication requirements to secure the network.

WPA3-Enterprise with 192-bit Mode provides the option for minimum 192-bit encryption instead of 128-bit. It also increases the authentication encryption to 256-bit and the key encryption to 384-bit.

As a home user, you may need to know only WPA3-Personal, which does not require deeper knowledge of wireless security for configuration.

If your device does not support WPA3, you may use WPA2 instead. Although WPA2 is not highly secure, they are still better than the older ones. If you use WPA2 with AES encryption, hackers can intercept or inject data but cannot recover security keys such as passwords.

Wi-Fi routers that support WPA3 also support a WPA3/WPA2 transitional mode. This will allow the connections from devices using either WPA2 or WPA3 encryption.

Wi-Fi Encryptions to Avoid

As a user, you may also need to understand the Wi-Fi encryptions that are obsolete and insecure and must be avoided. Some of the prominent ones to avoid include WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), WPA Version 1 and WPA2-TKIP.

Among the obsolete ones, the WEP encryption standard is from 1997 and was compromised in 2005. It is easy to crack WEP. WPA Version 1 was introduced in 2003, but it was compromised in 2008 and again in 2009. WPA Version 2 using TKIP encryption was broken in 2017, allowing hackers to reveal private security keys.

Now, most of you might have seen WPS, a.k.a., Wi-Fi Protected Setup on your Wi-Fi routers. It allows the user to quickly connect a device to a Wi-Fi access point by pressing a button. This will allow anyone with physical access to the router to connect to your network, so you may need to avoid WPS or disable it.

How to Change Wi-Fi Router's Wi-Fi Security Settings?

To change your router's Wi-Fi security settings, log in to your router configuration interface. While it differs from one router to another, most of them allow access through a local web address or through a smartphone app. You may need to check your Wi-Fi router's user manual to figure out how to do this.

Once logged in, check for security-related labels such as wireless security, wireless configuration, security level, SSID setup, etc. Click it and see the encryption method your Wi-Fi router currently uses. You can change the encryption to the strongest one that your Wi-Fi router supports, apply changes and restart your router.

In case your router does not support at least WPA2, it is time to upgrade to a new router immediately.

Broadband Has Become the Ultimate Solution for Good 4G Deprived Users, Let’s Talk

Posted: 11 Feb 2022 09:52 PM PST

Broadband

Broadband internet has become the go-to solution for people working from homes or just looking for a decent high-speed internet experience. The 4G networks in India aren't at par in performance to what users get in countries such as United Arab Emirates (UAE), South Korea, and more. There are a lot of factors and reasons behind the lack of a strong 4G presence across India. Not dwelling too much on that, let's talk about how fiber broadband has changed the narrative for Indians.

Broadband Offloads 4G Networks and Offers Reliable Experience

One of the biggest things that broadband offers to customers is confidence. The confidence of getting a good internet experience before jumping on a video conference or uploading a big file or more.

Fiber broadband is more reliable than 4G networks, and the best thing is that you can control the Wi-Fi network congestion (if there) and also the kind of speed you get. There are plans available starting with 30 Mbps speed and going up to 1 Gbps of internet speed, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

4G networks would still take time to improve in the country. While India has come a long way from where it was in 2016, there's still a lot of room to improve for all the telcos.

Thus, for people who are working from their homes or streamers who require a consistent internet network, a fiber broadband connection is the right way to go. Another thing that's great about broadband is there is plenty of data at disposal.

With mobile plans, there's always a fair-usage-policy (FUP) policy limit on data restricting the users from consuming a high amount of data. But broadband connections remove that limitation.

Plus, now high-end broadband plans also come with over-the-top (OTT) subscriptions bundled for no extra cost, which helps many users save on their DTH or cable TV bill. The expansion of fiber networks in the country would allow more people to get fiber broadband connections in their homes and offices.

Excitel vs ACT Broadband: Which Company Offers Better Affordable Plan

Posted: 11 Feb 2022 05:35 PM PST

Excitel vs ACT Broadband Plans

When it comes to affordable broadband plans, internet service providers (ISPs) offer uniquely curated plans for their subscriber base according to their needs. The demand for broadband plans in the affordable price segment has increased in the last couple of years as people had to tune in online for work, learning and even entertainment because of the pandemic. Further, the majority of the population in India is looking for economically sustainable plans that also offer ample data speed and there are multiple ISPs in the country offering such plans. Two such growing ISPs in the country are Excitel and ACT Broadband. While Excitel offers a single very affordable broadband plan, ACT on the other hand has more than one plan to offer. Mentioned below are the broadband plans in the affordable price segment offered by the two ISPs – Excitel and ACT Broadband along with the pack details.

Excitel – 100 Mbps Plan

One of the growing brands in India, Excitel uses European technology to offer seamless and consistent performance. Excitel only offers broadband plans with three-speed options – 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps and 300 Mbps. Thus, the most affordable offer from the telco is its 100 Mbps plan. The 100 Mbps plan from Excitel comes at different price tags and durations to cater to user convenience. The Fiber First from Excitel provides users with a 100 Mbps plan for a month at Rs 699. Users can also get the plan for 3 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months for Rs 565, Rs 508, Rs 490, Rs 424 and Rs 399 respectively. However, the 9-month plan is available for only new subscribers to the service. Moreover, the plans from Excitel are truly unlimited and no FUP data limit is levied upon.

ACT Broadband Affordable Options

When it comes to affordable broadband plans with adequate data speed, ACT has a few extra plans to offer than Excitel. The Internet Service Provider based in Bengaluru provides a 40 Mbps unlimited data plan called 'ACT Basic.' The plan usually costs Rs 549 for a month, but the ISP is providing a unique offer for its customers, wherein the 'ACT Basic' plan is available for a price of Rs 470 per month for a duration of 6 months. In addition to this, the FUP data limit levied on the broadband plans is 500GB post which the internet works at speed of 512 Kbps.

Further, ACT also provides a 75Mbps unlimited data plan called Rapid Plus pack. Users can get the Rapid Plus pack from the provider at a monthly cost of Rs 710. The FUP data limit levied is 750GB post which the internet works at speed of 512 Kbps. Users can also get free trials to some of the Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms and various add-ons with the pack.

Lastly, just as Excitel, ACT also offers a 100 Mbps broadband plan called Rapid Plus pack. Users can get the Rapid Plus pack from the provider at a monthly cost of Rs 985. The FUP data limit levied is 1000GB post which the internet works at speed of 512 Kbps. Users can also get free trials to some of the OTT platforms and various add-ons with this pack as well. It is to be noted that these plans are for the city of Bengaluru, and they may vary across the country.
