Google recently made an extensive design overhaul for Gmail with the Material You theme. Although it was revealed for Gmail Business Accounts, it looks like the makeover will soon arrive for personal Gmail accounts. The Google Workspace Updates blog post that initially updated the world about the design change has recently been amended the post to include new details.

According to the blog post, anyone with standard accounts, Workspace accounts (including Starter, Standard, Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, Frontline, or Non-profit account), G-Suite Basic and Business licenses should start seeing the update soon.

The people with scheduled release domain may have to wait until February 28, 2022, for the rollout. It looks like the new design will be a part of all Gmail accounts by April 2022. To see if you have received the update, you may click the cogwheel at the top right of your Gmail and access 'quick settings'. Click 'Try out the new Gmail view' before reloading your web app.

Main Features of Gmail New Design

The key difference in the new Gmail makeover is a left-aligned bar that houses Mail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet. With this, Gmail provides an integrated view of all key services into one place and reduce the effort to switch between them. There is no more saga of extra tabs or windows. Instead, it all happens from a single interface.

The new design has a new app menu interface that allows users to access all of your email, chats, Spaces, and meetings from one place, enabling seamless switching between them. If you wonder if the menu on the top left would collapse the app menu, it will not. The app menu seems to remain persistent in the new design.

Google has integrated a new notification bubble on the bottom-left for unread chat messages. Clicking the bubble will open your message as a pop-out or in the whole window. The status indicator for chat has been moved to the top-right of the screen in the new design, and it looks like a status indication for the entire Google Account and not chat alone.

Besides the rollout of the makeover, Google has updated its Gmail Support site to help customers understand how to utilise the new Gmail Integrated View.

Did you receive the new Gmail makeover? If so, let us know in the comments.

Union Minister Appreciates the Positive Response from Semiconductor Industry for Govt Schemes

Posted: 15 Feb 2022 07:06 AM PST

Semiconductor Industry

Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw has applauded the "superb" response from the semiconductor industry in India for the initiatives taken by the government for the sector by introducing new schemes. The minister was speaking at the IT industry grouping Nasscom's strategic review press conference where he encouraged the semiconductor industry in India to "double down" on its efforts.

The Need for Financial Support

For those unaware, back in December, the Union Cabinet had sanctioned Rs 76,000 crore incentive plan for semiconductor fabricators and display manufacturers. The approval of this Product-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme was given to encourage corporates to start manufacturing in India, making India a global electronics production hub. The PLI scheme was aimed at providing capital support and product-related incentives to the industry.

The decision was taken by the government keeping in mind the growing challenges faced by the country such as dependency on countries like China for imports, disruptions in the supply chain as well a sudden surge in demand for semiconductors during the pandemic.

According to the report from PTI, yesterday, the Indian multinational mining company Vedanta announced an agreement with contract manufacturer Foxconn related to the production of the semiconductors. It is very likely that comments from the union minister come in the light of this pact. Earlier, Tata Group has also demonstrated interest in the area. Vaishnav said in a statement that he is elated with the positive response received from the semiconductor industry in such a short span of time.

The minister further added that display fabrication, compound semiconductors and design ecosystem are bound to create quality and numerous employment opportunities in the country and he is pleased with the "excellent" response from the industry. He urged the industry participants to double down on their efforts and come up with more new ideas and suggestions.

The schemes introduced by the government has come as a boon to the semiconductor and display ecosystem in the country. Robust financial support would augment the capabilities of the Indian manufacturers, making them globally competitive to attract investments. Vaishnaw also applauded the IT industry which witnessed the addition of 4.5 lakh new people in FY22 taking the direct employment numbers to 50 lakhs.

5G Race in India at Full Speed, But Users Just Want Good 4G

Posted: 15 Feb 2022 04:20 AM PST

5G

5G networks will soon become a part of India in a large-scale manner. The spectrum auctions are what everyone is waiting for. Telecom operators have already made changes to their network infrastructure and are continuously upgrading equipment to ensure that they can launch 5G networks as soon as the spectrum is available.

Be it Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel or Vodafone Idea (Vi), everyone's moving rapidly with their 5G plans. All the telcos will be in the race to launch 5G before their competitors. However, while the 5G rollout takes place, the absolute requirement for an end consumer today is a good 4G network.

5G networks use cases and applications suggest that it is more appropriate for industrial or business customers. An average consumer can do well with a strong 4G network. But, in India, that's missing for now.

Good 4G Available, But in Some Areas Only

It is not that good 4G networks are not available in India. They are available but not everywhere. Jio is the best in terms of coverage, but in most areas, even though the telco deployed additional spectrum in 2021, consumers face network congestion problems.

Neither of the telcos is expected to lose focus on their 4G network services. In fact, along with 5G, the telcos are expected to invest in 4G networks too. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is also coming in with the homegrown 4G this year only which will add to the competition in the market.

Telcos such as Vodafone Idea don't even have the money to raise capex levels to improve 4G infrastructure and services in the country. The Ericsson Mobility report had also said that 4G is going to be in India until 2027 at least. This means that the telcos will keep their focus on 4G.

Users would be satisfied with good 4G networks even if 5G is not present in their location. Right now, people have to depend on broadband connections for a reliable internet experience. Hopefully, that day is not far when the telcos will improve their 4G across the nation where BSNL also adds to the experience of the users.

5G Spectrum Auctions

The 5G spectrum auctions are expected to take place around May 2022. The telecom secretary, K Rajaraman, had said that whenever the Telecom Regulator Authority of India (TRAI) submits the recommendations, it will take the government at least two months from then to hold the spectrum auctions for 5G.

According to the IT and telecom minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, TRAI is likely to submit the recommendations by March of this year.

Oppo Partners With Hasselblad After OnePlus, Promises Breakthrough Tech at MWC 2022

Posted: 15 Feb 2022 02:20 AM PST

Oppo

Oppo, a consumer electronics giant, has announced that it is partnering with Hasselblad for co-developing cameras for its flagship smartphone series 'Find'. Both the brands have promised to work together to focus on finding a breakthrough in colour science for creating an improved mobile photography experience for the users.

This is a partnership that shouldn't come as a surprise for the market. Since the time OnePlus and Oppo had partnered, the resources and partnerships were sure to be shared. It will be interesting to see how Hasselblad partnership with Oppo works out as the OnePlus 9 series housing Hasselblad tuned cameras weren't that great.

It will keep getting hard and hard for the OnePlus and Oppo users to differentiate between the smartphones of both brands going forward. For countries such as India, where OnePlus is still rolling out OyxgenOS, it is easy to differentiate. But for some regions, OnePlus will be rolling out ColorOS for its devices. It will be interesting to see how both the companies brand their products going forward as there is minimal difference in UI and design of the devices.

Oppo has said that the first device to come with Hasselblad tuned camera will arrive in the next generation Find X series smartphone due to launch in the first quarter of 2022.

Oppo Promises to Launch Breakthrough Tech at MWC 2022

Oppo has announced that it will be participating in the Mobile World Congress (MWC), Barcelona, 2022. The company has promised that it will be launching a brand new connectivity product and bringing flagship products to the event.

Oppo will be setting up five major exhibition areas at its booth, which will include 'flagship', 'brand', 5G', 'Smartphone technology', and 'AR Ecosystem'. The company will also be setting up a virtual playground for users who can't join the event physically.

Not just technology, Oppo will also share how it is focusing on creating a sustainable business. The company had already reduced plastic usage by 95% to pack its smartphones. During the event, Oppo will showcase the steps it has been taking to promote sustainability.

Airtel Looking to Get Ahead of Jio, Vi With 5G

Posted: 15 Feb 2022 01:00 AM PST

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel is looking to get ahead of Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea in the 5G race. The telco has been raising funds very aggressively. It might be solely because the telco wants to enter the spectrum auctions with full confidence about its ability to get the best out of it. In the last few months, Airtel has raised funds multiple times. Once through the rights issue, then with the Google partnership, and now the telco is looking to raise up to $1 billion (USD) with debt instruments.

Airtel has constantly been upgrading networks across the country to support 5G as and when it launches. Airtel calls its mobile networks 5G ready. Not that Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) aren't doing the same, but Airtel's strategy of raising funds looks aggressive.

Airtel Has Already Proved the Power of 5G

Bharti Airtel was the first in India to test a live 5G network using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) in Hyderabad, using spectrum in the 1800 MHz band. The telco was successful in its testing and was able to showcase the power of 5G to the people living in India.

This was way back in early 2021. A year later, Airtel has come a long way working with its partners and conducting 5G trials. The telco has tested cloud gaming and more on its 5G networks and found successful results.

Vodafone Idea is going to face a lot of problems with the upcoming 5G spectrum auctions. The telco doesn't have the money needed. Vi has been trying to raise funds for years now but hasn't been able to secure any so far. Airtel, on the other hand, has raised funds multiple times in the last two quarters alone.

Jio is also making huge strides with 5G. The telco has developed a completely homegrown 5G stack and is conducting trials using it. Jio is also eyeing to reach as many as 1,000 cities with 5G networks.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had said that India would see 5G in 13 cities first. But as per the plans of Jio, many more cities might see the arrival of 5G.

Airtel's biggest aim with 5G won't be to acquire new mobile customers but to get the attention of the enterprise customers within India. Airtel Business, the B2B arm of the telco, already has a comprehensive set of services. With the arrival of 5G, Airtel will be able to offer better and more innovative services to enterprise customers.

Airtel to Leverage Oracle Cloud ERP and SCM Applications for Driving Productivity

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 10:38 PM PST

Airtel

Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in India, is going to be leveraging Oracle's Fusion Cloud Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Oracle Fusion Cloud Supply Chain & Management (SCM) to digitise and simplify its finance, planning, and supply chain processes. According to a release from Oracle, Airtel is looking to transform its shared services operations with the integrated Oracle Cloud ERP and Cloud SCM applications to drive productivity and agility across the company. With the help of these applications, Airtel will be able to automate many manual processes, streamline procurement, gain an on-demand 360-degree view of its financial data, and also streamline supply chain management.

Important Move from Airtel for Transitioning to Cloud-Based Applications

Oracle Consulting has carried out the implementation of the applications for Bharti Airtel. This will expand Airtel's Oracle Cloud footprint. For the unaware, Airtel had recently moved to the Oracle Fusion Cloud Human Capital Management (HCM) for supporting its associates and employees.

Pradipt Kapoor, CIO, Bharti Airtel, said this is a key deployment for the company with regards to transition to cloud-based applications and make Airtel and digital company.

Kapoor added that Airtel is continuously investing in transforming the internal operating models so that the partners and employees can work effectively for better service and customer engagement.

Shailender Kumar, Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director of Oracle India, said with the Oracle Cloud applications, Airtel will be able to leverage the innovation and latest technology to meet the shifting customer expectations and revamp business operations fast.

Bharti Airtel operates a pretty big business geographically as it is present in over 17 countries, including South Asia and Africa. The Oracle Cloud applications will enable the company in making fast changes and go digital fast. It is worth noting that this is not the first time Airtel and Oracle are collaborating. Both the companies have had a long-standing and meaningful partnership over the years.

Bharti Airtel Upgrades Rs 2999 Plan, Now Bundles a Free Major OTT Benefit

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 08:57 PM PST

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel has upgraded its Rs 2999 plan for the users. The telco will now be offering free major over-the-top (OTT) benefits with this plan. Airtel users purchasing the Rs 2999 plan right now will get it for 365 days with unlimited voice calling, 100 SMS/day, and 2GB of daily data, along with a free Disney+ Hotstar Mobile subscription. There are Airtel Thanks benefits included as well, which comprises Amazon Prime Video Mobile Edition free trial for one month, Wynk Music, Shaw Academy, FASTag cashback of Rs 100, and more.

This plan had the same benefits earlier, too; only the Disney+ Hotstar Mobile benefit worth Rs 499 was not there. The change in benefits is visible in both the mobile app and the website of the telco.

However, one interesting thing that has happened now is that the Rs 2999 plan has become the same as the Rs 3359 plan. Here's what you should know about this.

Rs 3359 Plan from Airtel Comes With Same Benefits as Rs 2999 Plan

The benefits of the Rs 3359 plan are now identical to that of the Rs 2999 plan. Earlier, users didn't get a Disney+ Hotstar subscription with the Rs 2999 plan, but it was there for the Rs 3359 plan. Thus, there was a clear distinction between the plans.

There must be a change coming for the Rs 3359 plan, or the telco would drop the Disney+ Hotstar subscription with the Rs 2999 plan. Whether this is a mistake on the part of Bharti Airtel is something that needs to be considered.

Because if both the Rs 2999 and Rs 3359 plans are the same, why would anyone go for the high denomination offering. There's clearly something here that doesn't make sense. Airtel had made the changes more than a week ago, and it is strange that the telco hasn't changed the benefits of one of the plans until now.

Apple Reportedly Going to Launch iMac Pro in June

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 08:11 PM PST

iMac

Apple is said to launch the new 27-inch iMac Pro with the M1 chip in June of this year. Many are expecting the Cupertino tech giant to hold an event in March 2022 wherein it might launch new Macs and the iPhone SE 2022 along with other products. The first Apple event of the year is highly anticipated to take place on March 8. Now, according to a tip from Ross Young, a famous leakster, Apple might hold an event in June to launch the iMac Pro with the M1 chip and mini-LED display.

iMac Pro Could Get 120Hz Refresh Rate Support Display

The 27-inch iMac Pro might come with 120Hz refresh rate support. Many reports suggest that the new iMac Pro will sport the same design as the iMac (24-inch) launched with the M1 earlier. But there should be a few changes.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets are likely going to be powering this 'Pro' iMac. Since the expected launch is around June, Apple might be planning to launch the product at the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022.

Hopefully, Apple will bring back the logo of the company at the front chin. For some reason, Apple had decided to remove it from the iMac (24-inch), and it doesn't make a big difference now for many users, but there are some who take pride in owning an Apple product, and thus it is something that Apple should consider while redesigning the 27-inch iMac Pro with the mini-LED display.

Apart from the new iMac Pro, Apple is expected to launch a ton of new products this year. This includes the new affordable iPhone SE 2022, AirPods Pro 2, MacBook Air with M2 chip, maybe a new MacBook Pro with M2 chip as well. The first event is expected to kick off on March 8, but nothing's confirmed for now. It will be interesting to see what all products Apple launches in 2022.

Tips for Choosing a Place to Fix Your Wi-Fi Router to Get Better Internet Speed

Posted: 14 Feb 2022 07:23 PM PST

Wi-Fi Router

Do you struggle to find a stable Wi-Fi signal within your house despite spending some considerable pennies on a high-speed broadband plan and the best Wi-Fi router? If that is the case, it could be the incorrect placement of your Wi-Fi router. The strength of Wi-Fi coverage heavily depends on router placement. With some minor change of place, perhaps you could improve your Wi-Fi signal. Here are some things you can try.

Tips for Placing the Wi-Fi Router

Place the Wi-Fi router in a central location of your home to get good signal strength across all rooms. If you are worried about wires spoiling the aesthetics of your room, you can clamp them neatly to the wall or enclose the cables.

Remember to place the router on an open shelf or mount it on a wall in plain sight. This can boost its signal by two times than hiding it within a cupboard.

There are things around the house that can interfere with Wi-Fi signals, such as concrete walls, metal objects, etc. While it is unavoidable to avoid such things in a home, you can place the Wi-Fi router in a spot with minor interference.

The higher, the better. Place the Wi-Fi router somewhere high to get better coverage.

Antenna's position is a critical factor in good coverage. To get better horizontal coverage, you may position the antenna upwards. For vertical coverage, you may try to keep them slightly sideways. Avoid putting the antenna in the direction of the walls or at 90 degrees. Anywhere between 45-60 degrees should serve the purpose.

Since the Wi-Fi routers deliver the internet using radio waves, it is much like a radio station. You may tune into your favourite radio station, which may not get connected since you are out of range. This works the same for devices. The farther the device is from the router, the weaker the signal.

Sometimes, a weak Wi-Fi signal could be due to external factors like another router nearby your place. Since there are plenty of connected devices and connections around, you cannot be interference-free. You may still try to get a place with less interference and finalize that as your spot.
