Indian Smartphone Users

A new study shows that India is on its way to having more than 1 billion smartphone users by the year 2026. The upsurge in the number of users is being speculated because of the rising sales of smartphones in the rural areas of the country. India at the end of the year 2021 had 1.2 billion mobile users out of which 750 million were smartphone subscribers. Moreover, India is also expected to be the second-largest smartphone manufacturer across the globe in the coming five years.

Increasing Smartphone Demand in Rural Sector

According to a report from PTI, Deloitte's 2022 Global TMT predictions suggest that the Indian smartphone market is expected to reach 1 billion smartphone users by 2026. The rural sector is growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6% and is going to be the biggest reason behind the increase in the number of users as compared to the urban sector which growing at 2.5% from 2021 to 2026.

The study states that the need for the internet is anticipated to result in increased demands for smartphones. The need to adopt fintech, e-learning, e-health will fuel the demand for smartphones in the country. The Deloitte study also predicts that urban areas will witness 95% replacements for new smartphones while only 5% towards pre-owned smartphones in 2026 as compared to 75% and 25% respectively in 2021.

Similarly, rural areas are also expected to witness 80% replacement towards new smartphones with only 20% towards pre-owned phones in 2026. Moreover, the replacement of feature phones with smartphones will also witness a gradual decrease with the increased number of smartphone users. The study suggests that feature phone replacements will come down to 60 million in 2026 from 72 million in 2021 in urban areas and 71 million in rural areas.

The increase in demand for smartphones will also be highly propelled by the introduction of the 5G network which according to the study will alone contribute to about 80% of devices by 2026. The study says that starting from 2022, 5G consumption will witness a year-on-year growth resulting in increased sales of 5G smartphones in India. It is also anticipated that introduction of 5G in the country and the ever-evolving digital ecosystem, 3G mobile network is most likely to become a thing in the past.

Vedanta-Foxconn, ISMC, Elest and More Submit Proposals to Establish Semiconductor and Display Facilities

Semiconductor and Display Fab

The Indian government announced on Saturday that it has received proposals from five companies interested in setting up semiconductor and display factories in India by making a cumulative investment of $20.5 billion which is roughly around Rs 1.53 Lakh Crore. The government had previously announced the decision to allocate Rs 76,000 crore outlay for the semiconductors and display manufacturing segment which will help boost their production in the country. The government's decision to enhance the semiconductors and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country has come at a time when there is an acute shortage of semiconductors globally due to many disruptions in the supply chain.

The Investment Proposals Submitted

According to a report from ET Telecom, currently, the companies which have submitted proposals to set up electronic chip manufacturing plants include a joint venture of Vedanta Foxconn, IGSS ventures and ISMC. A new release from the IT ministry informs that these companies are looking to make an investment of $13.6 billion and are seeking $5.6 billion support from the centre via the Rs 76,000 crore incentive scheme. Furthermore, Vedanta and Elest have also submitted their applications to install display fab projects in the country with an investment of $6.7 billion and are seeking around $2.7 billion investment support from the government.

Previously the deadline for the submission of proposals for the silicon semiconductor manufacturing incentive scheme, the government had given the deadline of 45 days which is up to February 15. The government had also announced that it will cover up to 50% of the cost of establishing two semiconductors and two display fabs in the country. The Vedanta-Foxconn Joint Venture, IGSS ventures and ISMC have submitted their proposals to set up 28-nanometre to 65-nanometre semiconductor fabs which will have a capacity of nearly about 120,000 wafers a month.

On the other hand, Vedanta and Elest have submitted applications to set up the 8.6 TFT LCD display fab along with AMOLED display panels that are utilized in smartphones and other devices. Other companies such as HCL, SPEL Semiconductor, Syrma Technology and Valenkani Electronics have applied for semiconductor packaging while Ruttonsha International Rectifier has submitted a proposal for compound semiconductors. All the submitted proposals have also received acknowledgement from India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), an institution that has been created to lead the Semicon India Programme.

Apple May Delay Foldable iPhone Until 2025, Work on a 20-Inch All-Screen Foldable MacBook

Posted: 22 Feb 2022 01:53 AM PST

Apple

Apple seems to be revising its plan for foldable iPhones until 2025, according to Ross Young, an analyst at Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). Instead, the Cupertino-based tech giant will focus its research and development on an all-screen foldable MacBook.

Young mentioned the changes in Apple's plan in the newly released DSCC report on the emerging foldable and rollable devices, hinting that the tech giant is not really in a hurry to enter the foldable device market. Considering that its competitors, including Samsung, have already started making marks in the segment with foldable smartphones, Apple's decision (if true) is surprising to the tech world. Earlier, the foldable Apple iPhone was predicted to launch in 2023 or 2024. The release of the foldable iPhone in 2025 seems to be a significant delay.

Apple Working on Foldable MacBook

On the other hand, Apple is allegedly exploring the possibilities of designing all-screen foldable notebooks. According to Young's report, which was first published by Macrumors, the company is discussing a display size of 20-inches for its foldable notebook with its suppliers. Young does not rule out the possibility of launching the device as a dual-usable product, one as a notebook with an on-screen keyboard and the other as a monitor when unfolded the users can use with an external keyboard. The Apple foldable MacBook could also feature a 4K resolution or higher with the 20-inches it explores.

Although the company seems to have commenced its research, the launch of the foldable MacBook will still be later than 2025, extending to reasonable possibilities of 2026 and 2027. If Apple launches a foldable device, it would become a new category for the tech giant.

Considering that Young has made some remarkable (a few accurate) revelations in the past about Apple's plans, the news about foldable MacBooks and the delay in foldable iPhone may be taken seriously. Previously, Young spilled beans about the iPhone 13 Pro's ProMotion display, the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro's mini-LED displays with ProMotion, the display size and bezels of the sixth-generation iPad mini and so on. Recently, Young mentioned the changes in the camera design of the iPhone 14 Pro, as a pill-shaped and hole-punch TrueDepth variant to replace the notch.
