Design and Innovation Equally Vital Along With Investments in Semiconductor Sector, Says MoS IT

Posted: 01 Mar 2022 02:03 AM PST

Semiconductor Sector in India
The Minister of State for IT and Electronics, Rajeev Chandrasekhar in a statement has said that even though the government's plan for boosting the semiconductor sector in India focuses on large investments due to geopolitical circumstances, the government is giving equal importance to design and innovation. Rajeev Chandrasekhar was speaking at the 35th International VLSI and Embedded Systems Conference where he talked about the fact how India's performance during times of pandemic has placed the country among the experts in the technology space.

Growth of India's Technology Sector

Speaking at the conference the minister stated that the government's ambitions, particularly in the semiconductor sector, is very clear and the roadmap involves huge investments. He stated that it is very natural given the geopolitical circumstances, however, it is equally important to strengthen the ecosystem around design, innovation and systems. The minister said that with the help of a combination of policies and leadership vision, India is at its peak of growth and expansion in the technology sector.

The Indian government has received proposals from five companies interested in setup semiconductor and display factories in India by making a cumulative investment of $ 20.5 billion which is roughly around Rs 1.53 Lakh Crore. The companies which have submitted proposals to set up electronic chip manufacturing plants include a joint venture of Vedanta Foxconn, IGSS ventures and ISMC. A new release from the IT ministry informs that these companies are looking to make an investment of $13.6 billion and are seeking $5.6 billion support from the centre via the Rs 76,000 crore incentive scheme. Furthermore, Vedanta and Elest have also submitted their applications to install display fab projects in the country with an investment of $6.7 billion and are seeking around $2.7 billion in support from the government.

Moreover, the government is also going to sponsor 40% of the chips above 28nm up to 45nm as well as setting up manufacturing units for 45nm to 65nm wafers. The Vedanta-Foxconn Joint Venture, IGSS ventures and ISMC have submitted their proposals to set up 28 nanometres to 65-nanometre semiconductor fabs which will have a capacity of nearly about 120,000 wafers a month. The government had previously announced the decision to allocate Rs 76,000 crore outlay for semiconductors and display manufacturing segment which will help boost their production in the country

5G in India: TRAI Working on DoT’s Deadline for Submitting Recommendations

Posted: 01 Mar 2022 12:52 AM PST

5G in India

5G network rollout timeline heavily depends on the time that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will take for submitting the recommendations for upcoming spectrum auctions. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had already written to the regulator asking to expedite the process so that the 5G rollout can happen by August 15, 2022. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) wants India to have live commercial 5G networks by the Independence Day of 2022. Whether this will happen or not will depend on how fast TRAI is working.

TRAI Working on the Deadline Despite Limitations

According to a Financial Express report, TRAI is working on the deadline despite limitations being there. This will allow the government to go ahead with the spectrum auctions by May at the latest. If there's any delay, the 5G spectrum auctions in India will get stretched to June or even July of this year.

DoT will consider the pricing and the other recommendations of TRAI for the spectrum bands that will be availed during the spectrum auctions. The telcos have requested the regulator and the DoT to slash the prices of spectrum by more than 90% to make the 5G rollout a feasible process in India. While that is unlikely to happen, a price cut is surely going to be there.

None of the telcos touched the 700 MHz band during the 4G spectrum auctions of 2021 due to its steep pricing.

DoT had also written to the TRAI explaining that there is an additional spectrum available for the auctions in certain bands, including 800 MHz, 900 MHz, and 1800 MHz.

But while the DoT can easily put the pressure of a timeline on TRAI, it is really important for the regulator to take its time so that a viable solution to all the recommendations provided by the industry and its stakeholders can be delivered. There are new elements such as satellite communications (satcom) involved in the upcoming auctions, which makes the job of TRAI even harder.

iPhone 12

Apple's iPhone 12 series, which launched in 2020, is now available for a very heavy discount for the Indians on Amazon's official website. Apple's iPhones are widely popular in India. So popular that people are ready to spend thousands of rupees for an iPhone that was launched two years back. It is because of multiple reasons, including the better resale value, more OS updates than Android phones, and the status symbol iPhones have become.

Thus, while the iPhone 13 is the latest flagship available from Apple currently, users are still buying the iPhone 12 devices. In fact, there are many who are going for the iPhone 11 series as well.

Let's take a look at the price of the iPhone 12 series devices in India currently.

iPhone 12 Series Price in India Reduced Heavily

iPhone 12's base variant with 64GB memory is available in India for Rs 53,999 on Amazon, while the 128GB variant is available for Rs 60,999. There's also a 256GB variant which sells for Rs 69,999, but it is only available in two colours – Black and Red.

The iPhone 12 mini is also available at heavy discounts on Flipkart. The 64GB variant of the device can be purchased for Rs 50,099 only, while the 128GB variant is available for Rs 55,099. The 256GB memory variant is selling for Rs 65,099.

The iPhone 13 series is quite expensive at the moment compared to what the users can get the iPhone 12 devices for. Many Indians don't purchase the latest iPhone series right away because they want to get it for a reduced price when another flagship series from Apple is announced. One can also get the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max at reduced prices on Amazon. But that still means purchasing a smartphone priced around the Rs 1,00,000 mark, which many won't find a good deal as it is two years old now.

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Selfcare is a relatively new mobile application that is made with the aim to ease the customer journey. BSNL has two mobile apps currently. The first is the old one which is 'My BSNL App', and the second one is the 'BSNL Selfcare'. Selfcare was launched in late 2021, and it offers a modernistic experience to the users.

In a very short span, BSNL users have shown a lot of love towards the new Selfcare application. BSNL Selfcare now has more than a million downloads with a 4.4 Stars rating in the Google Play Store.

It has been a quick adoption by the BSNL users as there's a lot of merit for using the BSNL Selfcare over the old My BSNL App.

BSNL Selfcare Allows Users to Do Almost Everything

BSNL Selfcare allows users to track usage details of benefits (talktime, data, and SMS) along with recharging and paying bills conveniently. The layout and overall design of the application have been widely compared to the mobile app of Vi.

It is not necessarily bad that BSNL's Selfcare app looks like the Vi app. All that a user would want at the end of the day is a smooth experience, be it with recharges or paying bills.

One of the best things is that users can not only manage their BSNL numbers but also the numbers of their parents, relatives, and friends with the Selfcare app. All the recharge packs that are available on the website of telco are also available on the Selfcare mobile app.

The size of BSNL Selfcare is only 6MB which is very less and light. Thus, almost anyone can download them very easily.

BSNL Offering Recharge Discount

BSNL is also offering a 4% discount to the users on prepaid plans when they use the BSNL Selfcare app for making recharges. It is a limited time offer that will be there until March 31, 2022, only.

Reliance Jio, India's number one telecom operator, offers its 1GB daily data prepaid plans starting at Rs 149 only. 1GB daily data prepaid plans are good for people who are not looking for something data-heavy. Bharti Airtel Leads With AGR Market Share Gain, Other Telcos Follow

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 06:50 PM PST

Bharti Airtel

The overall industry adjusted gross revenue (AGR) grew by 9.9% YoY and 4.4% QoQ to Rs 476 billion during Q3 FY22. During the quarter, Bharti Airtel's AGR market share grew by 90bps QoQ (350bps YoY), said ICICI Securities, in a report. At the same time, Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) AGR market share kept on dipping with 60bps further down during the quarter to 18.4%. The analyst said that Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) saw some improvement in the performance in 16 key circles. Reliance Jio's AGR market share also dipped by 40bps QoQ to 40.6%. The thing with Jio is that any impact of tariff hikes becomes evident only in the long-term as it has many long-term plan users in the prepaid segment.

BSNL Revenues Rose 5.8%

It is worth noting that the revenues of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) rose by 5.8% despite the non-disclosure by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). Many users shifted to BSNL after the prepaid tariff hikes from the private operators. This helped the telco add new users and also gain more revenues.

Bharti Airtel's AGR market share was up by 21.5% YoY and 7.2% QoQ to Rs 169 billion. During the quarter, Airtel's AGR market share rose to 35.4%. ICICI Securities said that Bharti's market share has been gaining steadily, and the growth is expected to accelerate in the next two quarters for everyone.

As mentioned above, Vodafone Idea Limited’s (VIL) AGR market share dipped down to 18.4%. The telco's AGR dipped 4.8% YoY; however, it saw a growth of 1% QoQ to Rs 88 billion.

Reliance Jio's AGR market share was 40.6% which is 40bps down QoQ but up by 65bps YoY. The telco's AGR rose 11.1% YoY and 3.4% QoQ to Rs 193 billion. The telco has a high proportion of long-validity plan users; thus, the benefit of the tariff hike will come in the later quarters for the telco, said ICICI Securities.
