| 5G Small Cells Can Help With Connectivity Inside Sports Venues Posted: 15 Mar 2022 05:27 AM PDT
If you are travelling to a sports stadium inside India or maybe anywhere in the world, be ready for one thing — loss of network connectivity or a bad network experience. This is because of network congestion inside the stadiums. Thousands of people are in the same area where most people are utilising the same company's network for data-heavy applications such as sending high-res images and videos shot from their smartphones. Thus, most modern stadiums are now also coming with the facility of Wi-Fi and public hotspots to ensure that people don't lose touch with internet connectivity inside stadiums. How Can 5G Small Cells Help?First of all, the sheer capacity of 5G networks would ensure that the mobile networks aren't as congested as 4G, which will mean better speeds. But, to deliver a 5G coverage to everyone inside the stadium, communication service providers (CSPs) can leverage 5G small cells. These small cells can be placed below the sitting chairs of the crowd. Since they are very small, they can easily fit there. Companies such as Ericsson have already built products to solve this issue and are offering them to CSPs for deployment. Ericsson's 5G small cells will help with the scaling capacity of the network and will offer an improved and consistent network experience to the users. It is worth noting that Ericsson had earlier partnered with Telefonica for offering 5G services at the famous Camp Nou football stadium in Barcelona. Ericsson's Radio Dot System (small cells) utilised 3.5 GHz spectrum to deliver 5G services to people inside the football stadium. The issue with traditional coverage solutions is that they are not easy to scale and are not cost-effective either. But with the 5G small cells, CSPs and the sports authorities can work together across India and the globe to ensure that major sporting venues where thousands of fans come together to support their favourite team don't lose network connectivity. |
| Samsung Galaxy A Series Smartphones Are Keeping the Company Alive in the Race Posted: 15 Mar 2022 04:53 AM PDT
Out of all the smartphone series that Samsung sells in the market, its 'A' series smartphones are the most in-demand. According to the data compiled by Counterpoint Research Global Handset Model Sales Tracker, the A-series of Samsung accounted for 42% of the smartphones that the South Korean tech giant sold in 2021. For each quarter of CY21, the A-series smartphones from Samsung were more in demand than the combined smartphone series that the company sells globally. Samsung Galaxy A Series Devices Are Workhorse of the CompanyOverall, in 2021, 42% of the smartphones sold by Samsung were its A-series devices, and the remaining 58% were all the other device series. This means that nearly two-thirds of all the Samsung devices sold in the year were A-series smartphones. The mid-range A series devices are a perfect match for people who want a decent Samsung smartphone with a strong processor but don't want to overspend. Samsung is soon expected to launch the Galaxy A53 5G and the Galaxy A73 5G in the event scheduled for March 17, 2022. These devices will compete heavily with the mid-range smartphones that are sold by Chinese companies. In a quarter-by-quarter comparison, the Galaxy A series devices accounted for 56% of the total smartphones sold by Samsung in Q1 2021. In Q2, Q3, and Q4 of the same year, this figure stood at 60%, 57%, and 59%. Thus, there's no doubt that Samsung will introduce more 5G smartphones in the A-series portfolio in the future as the consumers want more of A-series devices. This is a strange figure and something that Samsung wouldn't be too happy with. The South Korean tech giant would have wanted its premium series devices to sell more than the budget or mid-range smartphones. However, in contrast, the company could be happy with the figures as with the A-series, Samsung could earn at a larger scale and grow its market share in the smartphone market globally. |

Taking the 5G revenue trends from the global markets, Nokia India, in its annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report, said that by 2026, mobile 5G services are forecasted to generate USD $9 billion, which will be equivalent to 37.7% of total mobile services revenue. The total revenues that the telcos make from 5G services is expected to grow at 164% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) from the expected USD $0.2 billion to USD $9 billion in 2026. Note that these are just predictions and can't be taken literally as no one really knows how the Indian market is going to react to 5G. The actual data might be more than what Nokia has predicted or less than that. Worldwide, by 2026, 5G services are expected to generate USD $645 billion, which will be equivalent to 64% of the total mobile revenues, said Nokia India in its report. 5G Use Cases that Nokia Has Identified according to Indian PerspectiveThe 5G use cases that Nokia has identified for India would go primarily towards sustainability, digitisation, and innovation. The company has already been working with Vodafone Idea (Vi) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and helping the telco with its 5G trials. Things such as environment monitoring, fieldworker safety, resource management, IoT at scale, smart sensors, asset tracking and more will be possible in India because of 5G. Nokia said that the two most immediate areas identified for 5G use cases are smart surveillance and public services along with smart transportation. Then there is also smart health and smart education along with cloud gaming that 5G will enable. A lot of this data also depends on the spectrum pricing and the overall regulatory framework that the Indian telcos will have to grow their business in. Initially, the primary uptakes of 5G services should be the enterprises more than the normal mobile consumers who might not need 5G speeds on their devices. |

| Indian Telecom Operators Sharing Infra Should Make 5G Successful Posted: 14 Mar 2022 11:43 PM PDT
5G is around the corner for India, and there's a lot that needs to happen. Starting with the policies, the central and the state government’s outlook for the telecom industry must be the same. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in September 2021 announced that the telcos could share active infrastructure, including core network amongst themselves. Further, using VSAT, the government said that telcos could also provide backend or backhaul services. This will allow the companies in reducing costs and also roll out new network services faster. Further, it will also enable more efficient infrastructure planning. 5G to Involve Big Costs5G rollout isn't going to be cheap for the telcos. Spectrum cost, network upgradation cost, regulatory fees are just the tip of the iceberg. To ensure that India sees 5G fast, telecom operators must agree to leverage the existing infrastructure of other companies. This will especially benefit companies such as Vodafone Idea (Vi), which doesn't have the capex required to scale 4G networks across the country the way Jio and Airtel can. With 5G, the industry and the government's aim should be to make the connectivity standard available in as many parts of the country as fast as possible. This is not just so the users can browse Instagram at a fast pace, but also for faster development of the economy. With 5G, the industrial and manufacturing sectors should grow fast. All the use cases of 5G point us towards the fact that it will be leveraged primarily by the enterprises. The more enterprises can use the power of 5G in different parts of the country, the better it is for the economy. It will also help the telecom operators in opening up new channels of revenues from the enterprise business faster. The future of the telecom industry is in harmony that the stakeholders and government can form. Being competitive is right, but with such fewer players, all need to work together in certain areas to ensure the growth of India. |

Moreover, users can also get a discount of 90% up to Rs 500 on their first month of rent. Reliance JioOne of the leading ISPs in India, Jio offers a 150 Mbps broadband plan that comes with access to a few OTT Platforms. Being on the list of most reliable service providers in India, JioFiber offers a 150 Mbps internet speed data plan at the price of Rs 999 for a validity period of 30 days. The FUP limit set on this plan is 3300Gb or 3.3TB. Users get access to symmetrical upload and download speeds of 150 Mbps with this plan. The plan is listed as a popular plan on the website and offers subscriptions to 15 OTT platforms including yearlong access to Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Eros Now and more. Alliance BroadbandAlliance provides a 150 Mbps broadband plan called 'Cruise'. Users can get the 'Cruise pack' that offers 150 Mbps speed at a price tag of Rs 1,000 per month. The ISP offers truly unlimited broadband plans and no data limit is levied upon. However, with the 150 Mbps plan users have to pay the charges for six months upfront. Moreover, the 150 Mbps plan from Alliance Broadband comes with access to three-month Amazon Prime along with other OTT platforms such as Eros Now, Zee5 Premium, Sony LIV and more. Tata Play FiberIndia's one of the most prominent service provider Tata Play Fiber, formerly known as Tata Sky Broadband, also offers a 150 Mbps plan via its fibernet technology which provides faster and enhanced internet connectivity. However, one of the drawbacks with Tata Play Fiber is that unlike the above two telcos it does not offer any OTT subscriptions on availing their tariff plans. Users can also access the 150 Mbps plan for longer validity periods which include Rs 3,000 for a validity period of 3 months, Rs 5,100 for a period of six months and Rs 9,600 for a validity period of one year. |
| 5G in India: mmWave Services to be Useless for Users Posted: 14 Mar 2022 09:21 PM PDT
There is not a shred of doubt that the mmWave (millimetre wavelength) 5G will be useless for normal consumers. There are a lot of things that hint towards a scenario that says that the telcos might not bring mmWave 5G for normal consumers at all. First of all, there is the question of spectrum pricing in the auction that is expected to take place during Summer this year. Then, we all must remember that mmWave spectrum bands are too fragile. This means that they can be easily disturbed through objects and other things such as trees, walls, etc. The coverage with mmWave bands is expected to be as low as 200 metres to 250 metres with a single site. Thus, the telcos will have to invest more in small cells, which would be very expensive if they want to offer mmWave 5G in a complete city or town. Telcos to Largely Go for Sub-6 GHz 5G in India and Across the WorldIt is not just in India, but the telecom operators across the world will look to go for 5G rollout with sub-6 GHz bands because it will be more practical for the users. Further, it will also cost less to the telcos compared to mmWave 5G. Most users won't even have the need for sub-6 GHz 5G networks if they live in a strong 4G network coverage zone. But even if the users do want to test out 5G, the mmWave 5G doesn't make sense as no user wants 1 Gbps speed (example only) for browsing Instagram. Thus, investing in mmWave 5G won't be good for the business of the telecom operators in the first place. mmWave 5G would be more attractive for the enterprises and smart facilities which want to create an internal network for communication. 5G spectrum auction will determine how costly the 5G rollout is going to be for the telcos. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently working on submitting the recommendations to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for the 5G spectrum auctions. |
