| Modi Govt Is Building Secure 5G Ecosystem With BSNL for India’s Future Posted: 19 Mar 2022 11:13 PM PDT
As more of the data is stored and transacted digitally, it can be hacked and accessed by people with malicious intent. Thus, network security is a major focus for the current Indian government. With 5G, the way people and machines connect will evolve into something entirely different than 4G; of course, in a better way. To ensure that the 5G future of India is safe, the Modi government is only allowing equipment from trusted vendors to be a part of the mobile networks. We saw it in the 5G trials first, where none of the Chinese telecom vendors could participate. Then, there's the trusted list of vendors who can supply equipment to the telcos. None of the telecom operators in India can take equipment from vendors who are not on the trusted list of the government. The Indian government is wary of who can be a part of the country's 5G networks in the long run, including both core and non-core networks. But this is not all. The drive for India's self-reliance with future network technologies is run by the state-run telco, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). BSNL to Come Out With Indigenous 4G and 5GWhat's peculiar is, despite rough financials, BSNL was forced by the Modi government to come out with homegrown 4G instead of partnering with a foreign vendor. While this might look like a bad decision in the short run, BSNL would become the first operator to introduce completely homegrown 4G and 5G in India. That would really count as something. BSNL might launch 4G and 5G on August 15, 2022. This would just be the start. With BSNL launching homegrown 4G, a sort of market expertise and a scope for innovation would arrive for the Indian Telecom gear manufacturers. Companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which had no prior experience of working as a telecom vendor and supplying 4G radios, now can do it not just for BSNL but other telcos as well. With homegrown 4G and 5G networks, users won't have to worry about their data falling into prying hands. This would keep the future of India secure and avoid any threats to the nation with regard to mobile networks. Telecom PLI Scheme to Push More Companies to Manufacture Within IndiaWith the telecom Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, the government is inviting multinational firms and gear makers to come and manufacture telecom equipment within India. This further gives the government more control over the security of these equipment and verifying whether they are safe or not. Further, it would boost the economy of the country. Homegrown 4G and 5G with BSNL along with the telecom PLI scheme would add more jobs and provide a necessary boost to the economy. |

The latest iOS 15.4 update from Apple comes with some new features and changes such as the ability to unlock an iPhone with a Face ID while wearing a mask. But it seems that the experience for the users hasn't been so great as they have been facing difficulties. There have been many instances of users taking on Twitter to share the problems of battery drain. A similar problem occurred for the users after downloading the iOS 15 update. Users Have Been Facing TroubleA Twitter user by the name of Maxim Shishko tweeted that his phone's battery life got really poor after iOS 15.4 update. Another Twitter user shared that his phone's battery percentage got down by 5 % in less than 10 minutes. A user on the microblogging site also said that iOS 15.4 is killing the battery in his iPhone 13 Pro Max as earlier he could go days without charging, but it's down to half capacity by mid-day. This is not it as another user named Joey Castillo faced a unique issue with his iPhone's battery. He stated that it is very weird that ever since updating, his battery percentage has been odd. His phone's charging stuck at 95% or 97% and when unplugged it'll show 100% maybe 5 minutes later or after a restart, then drain quickly. | Vi vs Airtel: Who Offers Better Annual Prepaid Plans Posted: 19 Mar 2022 06:44 AM PDT
Telecom operators in India provide a variety of prepaid plans for their users suitable for their needs. These prepaid plans can vary from short-term to medium-term to very long-term validities. For the users who are looking to commit to a long-term plan, telcos also offer a yearlong plan apart from the usual monthly, two-month and three-month packs. The yearlong plans usually have a validity period of 365 days and mentioned below are some of the annual prepaid plans offered by Vodafone Idea and Airtel along with the pack details. Vodafone Idea or ViVi offers three yearlong prepaid plans to its users with some exciting benefits. The first plan on the list comes at a price tag of Rs 1,799 and offers a total of 24GB of data along with unlimited calls and a total of 3600 SMS. | OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G Review: Powerful 5G Phone That Won’t Burn Your Pocket Posted: 19 Mar 2022 05:26 AM PDT
OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G launched in India exactly one month back, on February 17, 2022. It hasn't been a lot of time since the smartphone came out and people have kind of looked at it funny. Many have questioned what's the use of a OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G that's not even better than the OnePlus Nord CE 5G, which launched in 2021. Both the devices are 5G supportive, but the thing with Nord CE 2 5G is that it is super affordable. It looks like OnePlus wanted to trim down the OnePlus Nord CE 5G further to make it more affordable for the masses. OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G Review: Body and Design
The one thing that stands out about the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G is that its design is unlike anything that you would have ever seen before. Now I don't say that in a positive manner. The OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G comes with a glossy glass back with two very big camera sensors. I have the Gray Mirror variant, which is literally what its name suggests, a mirror. You can easily see the reflection of your face on the device's back.
The back of the smartphone is a fingerprint magnet. Thus, my suggestion for people who are using this smartphone's Gray Mirror variant would be to keep it inside a case. There's a 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom, which is something many Indians would appreciate. Since it is a OnePlus Nord CE device, there's no Alert Slider, which in so many words, is a bummer.
The device has a single speaker at the bottom, while the SIM tray and the volume rockers are at the left. As always, the power button is on the right. The chin of the device is slightly thicker than I would have liked, but it works; you will get used to it. At the front, the selfie sensor is at the top left, housed inside a punch-hole cutout. I have no clue what the Bahama Blue variant of the device looks like, but I hope it isn't the same finish as the Gray Mirror variant of the device.
OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G Review: DisplayThe OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G comes with a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with support for 2400 x 1080 pixels resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, and Gorilla Glass 5 on top for protection. The device's display is also HDR10+ certified. It can get very bright, and you can use it comfortably under sunlight.
The Fluid AMOLED display feels smoother because of the clean OxygenOS. The device boots on OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11 out of the box. The fingerprint sensor is also on the screen at the bottom, and just like always, it is pretty fast. I don't have many complaints about the screen of the device as it is fast and very responsive. It can also support AI Colour enhancement which means watching videos on this device would be a super experience. OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G Review: Performance and Battery
The OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G is a device that won't disappoint you in the performance area. It sports the MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC, which also comes with many expensive mid-range smartphones. The MediaTek Dimensity 900 makes this smartphone 5G supportive. I only played one game on this device — Asphalt 9, and it was a decent experience. The device does heat a little faster than I would have expected it to, but it's okay with a heavy game such as Asphalt 9. Otherwise, you won't find it overheating in any normal use case scenario. I have the 8GB RAM variant, and it's not bad. When I open too many apps, say 20+ apps at the same time, even then, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G is able to handle all of the apps smoothly. Yes, on certain occasions, the apps restart, but that's not surprising if you keep these many apps opened all at the same time. Thus, multitasking shouldn't be a problem with this affordable 5G device.
The 5G bands this smartphone can support are — 5G SA: 1/3/5/8/40/41/78; 5G NSA: 1/3/5/8/40/41/77/78. This is actually way more than what the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro can support. This device sports a 4,500mAh battery which can support 65W fast-charging. This is what gets me excited about this smartphone, actually. It has a pretty good battery life in case you are a moderate user. Heavy smartphone users will have to charge it again before the day's end to ensure that it doesn't switch off at night. But charging it won't be an issue because it can support such fast charging. OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G Review: CameraOnePlus Nord CE 2 5G has a triple-camera setup at the rear with a 64MP primary sensor, 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a 2MP macro sensor. For selfies, there's a 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor at the front. The camera of the device is pretty impressive. At this price range, based on the camera features and the kind of shots I got, I would say it is a pretty good option for camera lovers who are looking for a budget device. Anyway, check out the camera shots below. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G Review: Price and Overall Remarks
The OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G is a complete package for users who are looking for an affordable smartphone with decent performance. The only thing that I don't like about the Gray Mirror variant is its glossy glass finish. Apart from that, in every department, the smartphone is satisfactory for the amount of money the OnePlus is charging against it. If you are using the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G, you will not be left disappointed. It is not a flagship, yes, but it still hosts a very powerful 5G processor. The OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G is arguably the best 5G smartphone you will get around the Rs 20,000 – Rs 25,000 price point. It is available in India in two memory variants — 6GB + 128GB for Rs 23,999 and the 8GB + 128GB for Rs 24,999. You can get the device from Amazon India and the official website of OnePlus.

| Indian Telecom Industry: Will Users Go Back to Using Single SIM Cards, Let’s Talk Posted: 19 Mar 2022 02:17 AM PDT
The Indian telecom industry is going to see repeated tariff hikes in the coming years. This will specifically happen with 4G tariffs. Right now, because the prepaid mobile tariffs are very affordable, a lot of users keep more than one SIMs active at all times. This gives them the freedom of using multiple networks for staying connected with their friends, family, and colleagues. But there's one thing that a lot of multiple SIM owners in India will think after a few more rounds of tariff hikes — Is the secondary SIM worth it? This is because the cost of keeping the secondary SIM will keep going up. While for sure a lot of people would still own it to hedge against the network service deterioration from one telco, there will be many who will be dropping their second SIM without a lot of thinking. Does Owning a Single SIM Makes Sense?Well, the answer to this question depends on a lot of things. First of all, it is worth considering whether there's an actual need for the second SIM. Second, are both the SIMs from a single telecom operator? Third, is the user over-spending just to keep the secondary SIM active? These are the questions that a user will have to answer, and the answers will vary for sure, but the decision to keep a secondary SIM will only make sense if there's an actual need for it. Right now, almost everyone owns multiple SIMs. But with the tariffs going up, it might become a different scenario. This would also mean that the telcos might see a gradual drop in their total subscriber base. However, it should help with rising average revenue per user (ARPU) figure. The private telcos are expected to raise tariffs again later this year. It will be interesting to see whether Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will join the private players. How Much Tariff Hike Might Come? The telcos might again aim for a 15% to 25% increase in the tariffs. This will help them increase their ARPU and get a better return on their investment. The telecom operators aren't solely focused on adding new subscribers by offering lower tariffs anymore. They want their ARPU to increase and earn more money to be profitable so that they can invest more in the business and come out with better services as fast as possible to stay ahead of the competition curve. It will be worth waiting to see whether the tariff hikes will come again in November or the December period of this year or will it arrive even earlier. |
| 5G in India: TRAI Testing the Use of Street Furniture Posted: 19 Mar 2022 01:36 AM PDT
Street furniture is a term that is used by the telecom industry when talking about small cells deployed on public buildings, road lamps, traffic signals, and more. Street furniture's basic role is to help with delivering better coverage to users. It is a boost to the existing major telecom infrastructure such as mobile towers. Now, according to an ET Telecom report, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is conducting a pilot project for deploying street furniture in several parts of the country. It is worth noting that with 5G, the need for mobile towers and sites would increase exponentially to ensure proper coverage can be delivered to the users when they are connected to mobile networks operating in very high spectrum frequencies. TRAI Conducting Pilot Test at These LocationsTRAI is conducting its pilot test to see whether street furniture works well or not in four parts of the country. These include Kandla Port in Gujarat, Bhopal, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation, and the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. Kerala is already using street furniture to deliver better connectivity to the users. Many industry bodies such as the Cellular Operator's Association of India (COAI) have voiced their opinion supporting the notion of using street furniture for 5G. The commercial rollout of 5G will be a difficult process for the telcos to go through. For making it a success in India, the telecom operators must be provided with all the help to ensure a successful 5G rollout. This includes giving the telcos access to street furniture such as electricity poles, and more in an easier manner. It is worth noting that the government had also allowed the telecom operators to start sharing their infrastructure for providing services. This would be a big boost to their business as the telcos won't have to worry about spending in infrastructure for each region where their competitors are already present with a solid infra. It will also reduce the network rollout time for the operators. |
| Vodafone Idea (Vi) Might Get an Investment from Hong Kong: Report Posted: 19 Mar 2022 12:24 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator trying to survive and raise funds, might get an investment from Hong Kong under Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) route. In 2021, as a way of bringing reforms for the telecom sector, the Indian government had allowed the telcos to get 100% of FDI through the automatic route. However, there was a condition. If the telecom sector was to get an investment from any country that shares land border with India, then special approval from the government would be required. Vodafone Idea Wants to Understand Whether It Can Take Investment from Hong KongVodafone Idea (Vi) wants to understand from the government whether Honk Kong would be considered as a country that shares land border with India. It is unclear for the telco whether it can get 100% of FDI through the automatic route from Hong Kong, said a report from The Hindu BusinessLine. Vodafone Idea might be in the process of raising funds from a Honk Kong-based company or group and just wants to understand how it can happen. The cash-strapped telco is looking to raise funds via external investors as well as promoters to compete with Jio and Airtel in an equal manner. Vodafone Group Plc, the largest promoter of the telco and the Aditya Birla Group (ABG), another promoter, are expected to pitch in with additional funds for Vi. Vodafone Idea had announced that it would be raising about Rs 14,500 crore. Out of this, Rs 4,500 crore will come from the promoters. The remaining amount Vi said that it would get from the external investors via debt, equity, or in any way possible. The management of the telco had said that they aim to complete the fund-raising activity by March-end. The money raised will allow Vi to increase capex levels and also participate in the 5G spectrum auctions more freely. |
