| Apple Plans to Resume iPhone 13 Production at Foxconn Plant in April Posted: 16 Mar 2022 06:20 AM PDT
The Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is gearing up to resume production at its Foxconn Chennai plant. A new report suggests that Apple is planning to begin the production of its iPhone 13 series handsets at the Sriperumbudur plant near Chennai in April. The manufactured devices will be used for both local as well as export purposes. The production was scheduled to begin back in January but Apple had to put the production plant on probation as there were protests by women workers regarding food poisoning in December. Apple Facing Problems at its Manufacturing PlantsApple has opted the way of manufacturing in India itself to get rid of heavy import tariffs and has been able to save around 20% on the price of its products consequently. Even though the local production has helped the company with the costs of its products, it has been facing multiple other troublesome situations. For those unaware, On December 17, about 2000 female workers protested the company's bad working conditions, resulting in the Foxconn plant's closure. Workers were discovered to be working in arduous conditions. The kitchen conditions were also labelled as a 'disaster.' Food safety inspectors who visited the factory after the protests discovered that the food items handed to the workers were contaminated with rats. Over 150 female workers were hospitalised as a result of the tainted food. Protests erupted after workers were hospitalised due to inedible food. On the other hand, at the company's Wistron iPhone plant in Bangalore, a huge riot broke out in December 2020. Workers of the factory smashed glass, overturned cars, and started fires to revolt against lower salaries and unpaid wages. This happened because of a delay in payments due to the extensive hiring spree by the plant's HR department. | OneWeb India Launch Pushed Ahead, but the Company Gets License from Govt Posted: 16 Mar 2022 05:21 AM PDT
Bharti backed communications company OneWeb has been planning to launch broadband-from-services in India and has finally received the very important GMPCS (global mobile personal communications by satellite services) permit from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The permit will allow the company to launch its services in India in the latter half of this year. The original plan to launch the services was around May 2022, however, the date is most likely going to be pushed because of the ongoing Russian-Ukraine war. OneWeb's Plan to Provide Broadband-From-Space ServicesAccording to a report from ET Telecom, a spokesperson from OneWeb said in a statement that the company has received the Letter of Intent (LoI) for the GMPCS licence from DoT and is looking forward to contributing to the Digital India vision through its services. It is to be noted that Mukesh Ambani owned Jio Platforms in partnership with Luxembourg's SES announced to deliver fast broadband from space services across India and neighbouring markets using geostationary (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations. This would that the competition in India's budding internet-from-space services segment is bound to increase. As mentioned, OneWeb's plan to launch the satellites in May 2022 is likely to get delayed as the operator is looking for fresh locations to launch its remaining low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, including from ISRO's facilities in India. For those unaware, OneWeb has recently suspended satellite launches from a Russian-operated cosmodrome in Kazakhstan amid the continuing war in Ukraine. OneWeb is currently planning to set up a global constellation of 648-odd LEO satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency satellite broadband services in rural and remote regions globally, including in India. As of now, 428 satellites from the operator are already in the orbit. Industry insiders have informed that the GMPCS permit will ease the process of OneWeb's upcoming satellite broadband services launch in India. The communications company has already received a separate LoI for national long distance (NLD) services from the DoT. Moreover, a joint venture between US-based Hughes and Bharti Airtel in a 67:33 partnership will distribute OneWeb's satellite broadband services in India and look to connect towns, villages and local and regional municipalities in the country's hardest-to-reach areas. |
| 4G to Drive Substantial Mobile Data Traffic for Many Years to Come: Amit Marwah, Nokia India Posted: 16 Mar 2022 03:48 AM PDT
4G networks are not going to go out of India anytime soon, even though the era of 5G is here. It will drive a substantial amount of data traffic in India for several years in the future. "4G remains as a substantial broadband engine for mobile internet connectivity for many years to come," said Amit Marwah, Head of Marketing & Corporate Affairs, Nokia India, during a Q&A session at the launch of Nokia's Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report, 2022. It is worth noting that Ericsson's Mobility report released during November 2021 had highlighted that 4G is going to remain the dominant technology in India even in 2027. However, in a very natural manner, the total number of 4G subscriptions are also expected to reduce with the arrival of 5G. Regardless, the importance of 4G for mobile broadband won't be ignored by the telcos. 4G Has Towards 4.5G and 4.9GMarwah said that 4G has a path towards 4.5G and 4.9G in India, which will be able to deliver internet speeds close to that of 5G. According to Marwah, 5G will play the role of complementing 4G. Most of the use cases developed so far point towards the direction that 5G would be more in demand by the enterprises and businesses of India rather than the normal consumers. One big question for an average consumer before getting a 5G plan would be whether there's any necessary application on his/her smartphone or laptop which would require such high-speed mobile Internet. If the answer is no, most people should stick with 4G only. There are a lot many 'ifs' with the launch of 5G right now. More should clear once the spectrum auctions take place later this summer. The Indian government is targeting August 15 as the date for the launch of 5G networks in India. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is also trying to launch its 4G and 5G networks by the same date. |
