| BSNL Desi 4G Might Make Huge Impact in Indian Market: Opinion Posted: 10 Apr 2022 05:10 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has been fighting its own battle for rolling out 4G when the private operators are ready for 5G. The state-owned telco is finally not far from realising its goal of delivering India its first homegrown 4G network. From the core network to the complete equipment, BSNL's 4G network across India will be powered by homegrown technology. BSNL has already placed an order worth Rs 550 crores to TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) for procuring 40W radios for 6000 4G sites across India. The specific locations that the telco will target for this are unknown, but BSNL will go for the high-potential areas where it can earn more from customers to make a quick return on investment. BSNL's desi 4G network can easily make a huge impact in the Indian market. BSNL's 4G Network Can be a Fresh Option for Frustrated Consumers
Thus, it is hard for telecom operators to keep everyone happy. They can surely try, but it is quite an impossible task. No one can keep everyone happy. The thing with each of these operators is that all of them have similar offerings. While it is wrong to ignore the Vi Hero Unlimited benefits offered by Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), there's also the fact that Airtel and Jio offer better and more consistent mobile network experience. Right now, if you are an Indian and you want to consume 4G network services, your options are limited to Airtel, Jio and Vi. It can feel very suffocating to a consumer if all you have had is a bad experience with all the private telcos over the years. Whom do you turn to? There's no other option. BSNL, with its homegrown 4G, will be the new option for these frustrated consumers. No one can say how the experience with BSNL will be right now, but it will be something new. All the users frustrated with the private telcos will have BSNL to look forward to. BSNL can offer some respite to congested networks of the private telcos. The state-run telco might aggressively add new users once its 4G networks are out across the nation. BSNL plans to install over 1.12 lakh new sites for the 4G rollout in India. The initial order of 6000 sites is just the start which will be followed by another order for 6000 sites and then the remaining 1 lakh sites. What's interesting is that a major C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) official has also given Indian users a hope to look forward to BSNL's 5G. BSNL was also secretly working on 5G NSA while working on 4G. Things must move fast for BSNL in order for the state-run telco to make any sort of impact on the 4G market. There's still a long way for 4G to go in India, and if BSNL plays its cards right, the lack of options in India could work in its favour. |
| Satcom vs Telecom in India: Whom Should Govt Support? Let’s Talk Posted: 10 Apr 2022 02:08 AM PDT
The satellite communications (satcom) industry and the telecom industry are at odds about how the government should give spectrum to the communication service providers (CSPs). In 2022, for the first time, the spectrum will also be sought by private satcom players. Thus, the telecom operators aren't the only ones who will be competing for the scarce airwaves. Satcom companies believe that global practice should be followed, and the spectrum should be allocated in an administrative manner. Telecom companies say that it would be unfair if the satellite broadband companies get the spectrum outside of auctions as it will hurt the transparency of the process. Here's what you should know about this. Satcom Companies StanceBharti Airtel has sided with the satcom companies and said that administrative allocation is the right way for satellite broadband services. Satcom companies want to avoid participating in the auction and competing for the airwaves with the telecom operators. According to Bharti Airtel, the Indian government should follow global practice and allocate the spectrum to the satcom companies in an administrative manner. Satellite broadband is going to play a key role in the enhancement of India as a digital country. There are many areas of the country where terrestrial network service providers can't reach. But satcom companies aren't limited by reach and can offer services in the most backward regions of India without any hassle. Telecom Sector StanceThe industry body, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), has asked the sector regulator to keep equal and fair treatment for all. If there are two companies providing similar kinds of services, they should be given access to the spectrum in the same manner. Thus, if the satcom companies are getting it for free, the telcos should also get it for free, demands COAI. It is truly a hard decision for the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Whatever decision it takes, someone's going to be disappointed. Further, it is a very crucial decision because it will determine how the satcom companies are going to look at India as a potential market in the near future. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is waiting for the TRAI to submit final recommendations. The recommendations were expected to come from TRAI by the end of March or early April. Both the time frame are gone now, and it looks like there might be more delays. The telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said that the delay on the part of TRAI in submitting recommendations wouldn't affect the scheduled timeline for the spectrum auction. So we can hope that the 5G rollout in India won't be too far from August either. What way should DoT and TRAI go here? Let us know in the comments section below. |
| Samsung Could Introduce a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro model in 2022 with Bigger Battery Posted: 09 Apr 2022 10:25 PM PDT
The South Korean tech giant Samsung is known for introducing a pair of new smartwatches every year and has been doing it for some time. Following the same trend, it is expected that Samsung will introduce two new smartwatches in 2022 as well – Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Classic. However, this could change a bit as a new report suggests that Samsung is working on introducing a third smartwatch in the same series. Let's find out. What We Know About Galaxy Watch 5 ProA new report from SamMobile suggests that Samsung is working on a new wearable in its Galaxy series which is apparently going to be called Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. According to the report, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will come with a model number SM-R925. What's being changed with this model is its battery size. Galaxy Watch 4 was launched with a 361mAh battery backup, however, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is tipped to arrive with a 572mAh battery unit. One might think that with a bigger battery the size of the wearable might also get bigger, but a previous report informs that the size of this year's Galaxy Watch 5 will be 40mm and 44mm. So, it is possible that the Pro model of the series could come with a bigger size, however, nothing has been confirmed as of now. The change in the battery can be related to the fact that a number of Galaxy Watch 4 users had complaints about the battery backup on the wearable. The report also informs that apart from the larger battery unit, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will also come with Google's Wear OS. The company hasn't informed anything yet about a Pro model in the Galaxy Watch 5 series and this is the first anybody's heard of it. Not much is known about the Galaxy Watch 5 series as of now and it is advised to take the intel on the pro model with a grain of salt. |

| Motorola, OnePlus and Google Smartphones Are Releasing Maximum Radiation Posted: 09 Apr 2022 09:23 AM PDT
A new report suggests that the older smartphones from Motorola, OnePlus and Google Pixel are on the top of the charts when it comes to emitting radiations. All smartphones emit radiations that are harmful, however, a new report from Bankless Times informs us that the Motorola Edge, OnePlus 6T, Sony Pixel, and Older Google Pixel models are the highest emitters of these harmful radiations. Let's take a closer look at the list of the smartphones that are the highest emitters, which is topped by Motorola Edge. Top Devices Emitting RadiationGoing by the report from Bankless Times, Motorola Edge is the worst emitter as it recorded a SAR or specific absorption ratio of 1.79W/Kg. ZTE Axon 11 5G managed to remain in the second spot with a SAR value of 1,59W/Kg, however, it is not sold in India. OnePlus 6T was one of the worst emitters with a SAR value of 1.55.Kg. The other devices that make it to the top ten list include two smartphones from Xperia – Xperia XA2 Plus, Xperia XZ1 Compact and three devices from Google – Google Pixel 3XL, the Pixel 4a and the Pixel 3. Most of these smartphones are in fact premium category smartphones. The Specific Absorption Ratios (SAR) shows how quickly the body absorbs radiofrequency energy, upon which the above-mentioned smartphones have been ranked. Even though radiation can cause cancer, FCC has stated that there is no consistent or credible scientific evidence of health problems caused by radiofrequency energy emitted by smartphones. Although, a majority of the countries have set guidelines for smartphones to maintain the SAR levels. Motorola Edge has crossed the limits in the US as Federal Communications Commission has set a maximum SAR level of 1.6W/Kg. Smartphones are known to release low levels of non-ionizing radiation when in function, however, the levels vary. These radiations are also known as radio frequency (RF) energy which can actually be absorbed by the human body. Despite that, there is no evidence to prove the harmful effects of emissions from smartphones on our bodies except for the only visible effect which is the heating of the body part where the smartphone is held. |

| BSNL Executives Seek for Return of 38000 Crore Dues from DoT Posted: 09 Apr 2022 03:39 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) executives on Saturday met defence minister Rajnath Singh and sought help with a faster rollout of the 4G network across India along with the return of Rs 38,000 crore from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). According to an ET Telecom report, in addition to this, the executives requested an extension of the 2G license. The Sanchar Nigam Executive Association (SNEA), which represents over 11000 BSNL executives, asked Singh for continued support from the government and highlighted issues that are plaguing BSNL's turnaround. The Rs 38,000 crore that SNEA has requested from the telecom department is on account of the surrendering of broadband wireless spectrum (BWA) and pension contribution. SNEA Looks for Capex Support to Rollout 5G
Earlier this week, BSNL gave Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) order worth Rs 550 crores to procure 40-watt radio equipment for 6000 sites across the country. The state-run telco is planning to launch 4G networks in multiple parts of India by August 15, 2022. BSNL will initially focus on high-potential areas from where it can get the best return on its investment. Followed by this, BSNL is going to give another order to TCS for 6000 4G sites. BSNL plans to install over 1.12 lakh sites PAN-India for the 4G network rollout. Ashwini Vaishnaw, telecom minster, said the 4G network deployed by BSNL would be completely homegrown right from the core to other equipment. It is worth noting that none of the private telcos which already have a huge 4G subscriber base in India has a homegrown network. |
| India Jumps Rank in Both Mobile and Fixed Broadband Speeds Globally Posted: 09 Apr 2022 02:16 AM PDT
The Indian telecom industry is currently on the path to recovery and has the government's full support to make as long a stride as it can. Meanwhile, India has jumped rank in the median internet speed delivered for both mobile and fixed broadband globally. Ookla, a speed test platform available for users globally maintains a performance index of countries in terms of offering the best internet speeds. In its monthly update, India seems to be making progress. While it is not a very big progress, it is still something. Mobile and Fixed Broadband Median Internet Speed for IndiaFor mobile, Ookla said Indians got a median internet speed of 14.18 Mbps and the country is ranked at the 115th position, up one position. For fixed broadband, India jumped two ranks above and is now at the 70th position offering 48.14 Mbps median internet speed. While this might be some progress, India is still behind a lot of countries in offering the best internet experience to consumers. At the top of the list in the mobile segment is the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offering a 133.51 Mbps median download speed. Norway is in the second position offering a 118.58 Mbps median download speed. Things such as the number of people living in a country also make a huge difference. Compared to India, Norway and UAE are relatively smaller in population. Thus the bandwidth capacity is sufficient for users to get a very high median download speed. In the fixed broadband segment, Chile has jumped two ranks to bag the first position by offering a 197.59 Mbps median download speed. Singapore is at the second rank offering a 194.07 Mbps median download speed. In the fixed broadband area, India still has a lot of room to improve. There are a lot of areas of the country where optical fiber hasn't been deployed yet. With time, the stats for India should improve significantly. The telecom operators and the internet service providers (ISPs) in the country are making aggressive upgradation to their networks and services. |

| MediaTek Dimensity 1300 SoC Officially Launched – TSMC’s 6nm, Octa-Core Setup and More Posted: 08 Apr 2022 09:19 PM PDT
The Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek has been looking to take the top spot when it comes to the flagship Android chipset market with its MediaTek Dimensity 8100 and Dimensity 9000 chipset. The recently introduced flagship smartphones such as Realme GT Neo 3 and Redmi K50 series came with the flagship chipset from MediaTek. However, the semiconductor company has no plans for stopping as it has introduced yet another flagship chipset called MediaTek Dimensity 1300. Let's find out more. Everything About MediaTek Dimensity 1300 SoCMediaTek has officially announced the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 chipset which will become part of the Dimensity lineup for Android devices in 2022. The newly launched chipset comes as a successor to the Dimensity 1200 chipset that was launched last year. Dimensity 1200 was a major success and now, the Dimensity 1300 will build upon its success as it comes with some tweaks and improvements. When it comes to pricing, Dimensity 1300 falls in a price segment that is higher than that of Dimensity 800 and 900 chipsets, however, is lower than that of Dimensity 8100 and 9000 chipsets. The latest Dimensity 1300 chipset comes with an octa-core setup with 4 Cortex-A78 cores and 4 Cortex-A55 efficiency cores. The 4 Cortex-A78 cores include 1 Ultra A78 Core clocking up to 3GHz and 3 A78 Super Cores running up to 2.6GHz. The 4 Cortex-A55 can operate up to 2GHz. The Dimensity 1300 runs on TSMC's 6nm process and has support for 64-bit applications. The chipset has been paired with ARM Mali-G77 MC9 CPU which is the same as the previous iteration and will be powering the graphics onboard. The major upgrades that have been introduced with MediaTek Dimensity 1300 SoC over the Dimensity 1200 Soc include an improved ISP over last year as it now supports up to 200MP sensors and hardware-accelerated AV1 decoding for faster 4K streaming. Moreover, by making the use of real-time 3-exposure fusion, the ISP will also provide much improved low-light shots. Other features that come with Dimensity 1300 chipset include support for 16GB of 4266Mbps LPDDR4x RAM, UFS 3.1 support, support for 2520 x 1080 168Hz displays, and support for 5G on Dual SIMs. OnePlus Nord 2T and Redmi Note 12 series smartphones could be the first devices to come with the MediaTek Dimensity chipsets sometime in Q2 2022. |
| OnePlus Might be Planning to Introduce ‘Ace’ Series Smartphones Soon Posted: 08 Apr 2022 08:58 PM PDT
Back in 2020, OnePlus introduced its affordable 'Nord' series smartphones. Now, according to rumours, the company might be planning another new smartphone series called 'Ace'. Not just that, but even the launch might not be too far from here. According to a popular tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS), OnePlus might launch the OnePlus Ace lineup very soon and it won't be a budget device but will offer users a powerful experience. Check out the expected specifications of the OnePlus Ace. OnePlus Ace Specifications (Expected)OnePlus Ace is expected to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 SoC. While it is not the most powerful chip, it is still meant for high-end 5G smartphones. With the Ace lineup, the company will continue to focus on delivering high-speed charging and gaming. It is worth noting here that Oppo at a time had an 'Ace' series of smartphones. Oppo had introduced Oppo Ace and Oppo Ace 2 a few years back and then didn't launch anything what that moniker after that. The smartphone could be paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. OnePlus Ace is expected to feature a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with support for 120Hz refresh rate. The display panels are supplied by BOE, said the tipster. In the camera department, the smartphone might feature a triple-camera setup at the rear with Sony IMX766 as the primary sensor. The other two sensors could be an 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 2MP sensor. For video calling and selfies, the smartphone might feature a 16MP sensor. Note that the OnePlus Ace could be the first smartphone to feature 150W fast charging. The differentiation between OnePlus Ace and OnePlus 10 might be too hard for a customer as the OnePlus 10 is expected to feature MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC and almost similar specifications as the OnePlus Ace. It will be interesting to see what really happens here. |
