| 5G Spectrum Auction: TRAI Recommends 40% Cut in Spectrum Pricing Posted: 11 Apr 2022 07:43 AM PDT
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended including airwaves in the following spectrum bands in the upcoming 5G spectrum auction — 526-698 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300- 3670 MHz and 24.25-28.5 GHz. The regulatory body said that all the spectrum unsold in the previous auction will also be made available to the telcos in the 5G auction. But the big thing to note here is the price cut that TRAI has implemented on the airwaves. According to the recommendations released by the regulatory, a price cut of 40% has been recommended on the coveted 700 MHz band while a 36% price cut has been recommended for the mid-band spectrum (3300 MHz – 3670 MHz). TRAI Recommends Easier Terms for Telcos to Pay for SpectrumTo boost the growth of the telecom industry further, TRAI has recommended that telcos should be allowed easy payment terms to pay for the spectrum. The regulator said that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) should undertake a harmonisation exercise in 800 MHz, 900 MHz, and 1800 MHz bands immediately. Further, for the mid-bands, TRAI has recommended that both n77 and n78 bands be included and the telcos should be given the flexibility to adopt any of these band plans as per their business requirements. For the spectrum in the 3300-3670 MHz, TRAI has recommended a block size of 10 MHz and for the premium airwaves in the 24.25-28.5 GHz bands, the regulator has recommended a 50 MHz block. In addition to this, TRAI said the telcos should be given the spectrum in a contiguous manner. In the sub-1 GHz bands, TRAI has recommended a combined spectrum cap of 40% along with a 40% cap in 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 2500 MHz bands. For the mid-band as well the premium airwaves in the 24.25-28.5 GHz band would be capped at 40% as well. The sector regulator said that airwaves in the 526-612 MHz bands should not be auctioned right now as they are being used by the ministry of I&B (MIB). The 3GPP/ITU has also not yet determined the use of frequencies in the 526-612 MHz band. |

| BSNL Might Not Launch 5G Soon, But Will Still Earn from It Posted: 11 Apr 2022 05:28 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is gearing up to launch 4G networks soon in India. The state-run telco has already placed an order of Rs 550 crores with TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) to procure 40W radios for 6000 sites. BSNL will also be looking to launch 5G NSA networks in due time. But until then, the state-run telco will earn from the 5G rollout of the private telcos. BSNL to Lease Mobile Towers to Private Telcos for 5G RolloutWith 5G, the private telecom operators would want to add more tower sites and capacity. Building that outright can be an expensive and time-consuming process. Thus, to solve that pain for the telcos, BSNL is looking to lease out its mobile towers for the 5G rollout. According to a Financial Express report, the state-run telco is looking to lease out over 68,000 telecom towers. Out of this, 65% of towers are fiberised too. The publication's report said that BSNL has already leased out 13,500 telecom towers which earn the company more than Rs 1,000 crore per annum. 5G deployment and network rollout would require a denser infrastructure in India and BSNL is in a strong position to leverage that need to make more money. The telco has fiberised sites that it can lease out to the private telcos. The data load on 5G networks would be far more than what telcos saw with the 3G and 4G networks. Thus fiber backhaul will be of essential need for the private telecom operators. BSNL might not launch 5G network soon, but the state-run telco can still leverage its fiberised mobile towers to earn money through the 5G rollout of the private telcos. The Indian telecom industry has been pushing for the need to fiberise more towers and make the state Right-of-Way (RoW) policies uniform with that of the Indian Telegraphy RoW Rules 2016. |

One such ISP is Excitel which is looking to get deep into the tier-2 and tier-3 towns of India for offering fiber broadband internet services. Many ISPs don't want to invest in these towns because of the low-paying customers and fewer potential customers compared to the metro cities. But Excitel wants to bring internet connectivity for all. | Vodafone Idea in Advanced Talks With Apollo Global to Raise $1 Billion: Report Posted: 11 Apr 2022 03:10 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi) is reportedly in advanced discussions with Apollo Global for raising up to $1 billion. The cash-strapped telco might offer a mix of debt and equity to the US private equity investor, said a Livemint report. Both the groups are in advanced discussions right now, and the announcement for the same might arrive from Vi later this month. Vi has not been able to easily secure funding from outside investors. This was majorly due to the condition the telco was in and the policy environment in India, which made the telecom sector a dangerous gamble for equity investors. But since September 2021, the government and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have together offered the telecom sector multiple relief measures, which included a moratorium on spectrum payments. Vodafone Idea Also Got Funds from Promoter GroupsVi had also received fresh funds from the promoter groups recently. Three entities owned by the promoters of the company — Vodafone Group UK and the Aditya Birla Group (ABG) had infused Rs 4,500 crore as fresh capital into Vi. Due to the mammoth dues the telco has, it has been unable to secure funding from outside investors. But if things go right this time, Vi would be able to raise about USD $1 billion from Apollo Global, a major US private equity investor. Vi's board had earlier approved fundraising of Rs 14,500 crore, out of which Rs 4,500 crore was supposed to come via promoters while the remaining Rs 10,000 crore was to come from the outside investors. In addition to this, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had confirmed that it returned the bank guarantees (BGs) to the telecom operators for spectrum dues payments which are very far from now. Vi was supposed to get approximately Rs 15,000 crore worth of BGs back from the DoT. With the fresh cash flowing into the company, Vi would be able to expedite its 4G investments and also make fresh 5G spectrum purchase. |

| WhatsApp Testing ETA for Sharing Big Files Posted: 10 Apr 2022 11:26 PM PDT
One of the many things that people don't like is not being able to know when something they are sharing on WhatsApp will be completely shared. WhatsApp has been in the social media arena for more than a decade now and there are still many features that are missing from the platform. According to a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is now testing ETA for sharing big documents. Currently, whenever we share something on WhatsApp, we can't really know when it will be completely sent to the receiver. But very soon, that might change and users might be able to see the estimated time left for the file to be completely sent to the receiver. There are many factors that affect the time it takes to upload and send a file to someone else over WhatsApp. One of those is the speed delivered by your internet connection. This feature would also work to help users understand how much time it would take for a file to be completely downloaded on the app. So both receivers and senders are going to benefit from this feature. WhatsApp Was Testing a Similar Feature as TelegramWhatsApp was also testing a similar feature as that of Telegram. The company is trying to bring users a new capability on the platform which would allow them to share files of up to 2GB in size. But this feature was being tested with select users in Argentina and the global rollout and testing of this feature is unknown at the moment. However, in the not so distant future, it would be great if WhatsApp could allow users to share big sized files as well. Telegram, its biggest competitor arguably allows users to do that. For WhatsApp users, things such as Google Drive or other sharing platforms are required when they have to share big files with their contacts. This capability along with the ETA feature would be very good additions to the platform. |

| iPhone 13 Manufacturing Begins in India: Report Posted: 10 Apr 2022 07:58 PM PDT
Apple has started manufacturing the iPhone 13 series in India. The Cupertino tech giant is manufacturing the iPhone 13 series devices in a Foxconn plant near Chennai. Foxconn is a contract manufacturing partner of Apple. India is the world's second-largest smartphone market, and with this move, Apple is solidifying its stance and presence in the country. The iPhone 13 series is Apple's latest flagship smartphone series which launched back in September 2021. According to an ET report, Apple is manufacturing only the regular iPhone 13 models in India. The iPhone 13 Pro models aren't being manufactured in India. Apple Doesn't Manufacture “Pro” Models in IndiaFor some reason, Apple doesn't manufacture any of the Pro models in India. It is not just the case with the iPhone 13 series but also with the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 11 series. Regardless, Apple is performing good in India. In 2021, the company saw its shipments skyrocketing by 108% YoY to a record of 5 million units or roughly a 4% market share. Apple's focus on the Indian market has grown significantly in the last few years. With the iPhone 13, for the first time, the company released the smartphone series in India at the same time as the United States and other major markets for the company. By focusing more on local manufacturing, the company can speed up its go-to-market time and have better control over the supply chain. The iPhone 13 series has also received a discount in India.
