Jio and Airtel Likely to Witness Speedy Revenue and Subscriber Growth Post 5G Spectrum Auctions

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 08:28 PM PDT

Jio, Airtel Revenue and Subscriber Growth

The two major telecom operators in India – Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are all set to witness speedy growth in revenue as well as the subscriber count after the 5G spectrum auctions. According to the analysts, this growth for the two telcos will come at the cost of Vodafone Idea in the medium term. Even though Vi is raising Rs 10,000 crore capital, analysts believe that most of it will be utilised to enhance the 4G network of the cash-strapped telco.

Jio, Airtel to Grow at Vi's Expense

As per a report from ET Telecom, an estimation from the analysts suggests that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are expected to acquire somewhere around 150-to-200 basis points (bps) gains over two years after the upcoming 5G airwaves sale whereas Vi is most likely going to concede some points. Notably, the basis point is 0.01%. TRAI has already shared its recommendations and we can expect the auction to be held in May or June as the government is planning to roll out the 5G network in August around Independence Day.

According to the senior director at the global rating agency Fitch, Nitin Soni, Airtel and Jio should see an acceleration in revenue and subscriber market share gains at Vi’s expense in the medium-term after the 5G auction. He added that both telcos will definitely target pan-India 5G airwaves to invest in this future broadband technology which financially struggling Vi won’t be able to match.

Analysts inform that Airtel and Jio have sturdy balance sheets which will enable them to invest top dollars in pan-India 5G airwaves and consolidate their mobile broadband play. This move from telcos will come despite the fact that 5G spectrum spending in the initial years is probably going to yield low returns. On the other hand, Vi is not going to play a major role in the upcoming auction because of the lack of capital.

Previously, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended including airwaves in the following spectrum bands in the upcoming 5G spectrum auction — 526-698 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300- 3670 MHz and 24.25-28.5 GHz. The regulatory body said that all the spectrum unsold in the previous auction will also be made available to the telcos in the 5G auction.

Jio, Airtel, Vi: These Short-Term Prepaid Plans Offer Enormous Amount of Data

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 06:32 PM PDT

Short-Term Prepaid Plans

If you're looking for prepaid plans that provide more data, telecom operators provide multiple plans that might suit your need. However, the telcos offer a few short-term prepaid plans that offer a large quantity of data along with other added benefits such as OTT subscriptions. In this article, we are going to take a look at the select 28-Day prepaid plans offered by Jio, Airtel and Vi that provide an enormous amount of data along with other pack details.

Two Plans from Reliance Jio

The leading telecom operator in India provides prepaid plans that are slightly more affordable in comparison to the other telcos. The telco has a lot to offer, however, one of the tending plans from the telco is a 2GB/day plan. Jio offers a prepaid plan which provides 2GB data per day for a validity period of 28 days at a price tag of Rs 499. The plan offers unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day. In addition to this, users also get access to an annual subscription to the Disney+ Hotstar Mobile OTT platform as well as a complimentary subscription to a few Jio applications.

While 2GB plans are suitable for some, the users looking for more data can go for 3GB/day plans. Jio offers a 3GB/day prepaid plan with a validity period of 28 days at a cost of Rs 601. The plan offers unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day. In addition to the daily 3GB data, users also get a total of additional 6GB data as well. This plan as well comes with access to an annual subscription to the Disney+ Hotstar Mobile OTT platform as well as a complimentary subscription to a few Jio applications.

Bharti Airtel Offers Similar Plans

Even though Jio offers comparatively more affordable plans than other telcos, the case here might not be the same. Bharti Airtel offers similar prepaid plans as Reliance Jio, however, the benefits that come along are a bit different. The telco offers a 2GB/ day prepaid plan for a validity period of 28 days at a price tag of Rs 499 as well. The plan offers unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day. The plan includes added benefits such as a free trial to mobile edition Amazon Prime Video along with access to Wynk Music. This plan from Bharti Airtel as well offers an annual subscription to Disney+ Hotstar mobile.

On the other hand, the 3GB/day plan is slightly cheaper than Jio. The telco offers a 3GB/day prepaid plan for a validity period of 28 days at a price tag of Rs 599. The plan offers unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day. The benefits of this plan are the same as well, as users get access to an annual subscription to Disney+ Hotstar mobile, a free trial to mobile edition Amazon Prime Video and Wynk Music.

Vodafone Idea Heavy-Data Prepaid Plans

Lastly, Vodafone Idea or Vi doesn't offer any 2GB plans that offer similar added benefits as the above two telcos. Vi offers a 2GB/day plan at a cost of Rs 359 for a validity period of 28 days. The plan offers unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day. The plan doesn't offer access to any OTT platforms. However, the telco offers a similar 3GB/day plan as Reliance Jio and even provides more data.

Vi offers a 3GB/day plan at a price tag of Rs 601 for a validity period of 28 days. The plan offers unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day. In addition to the daily 3GB data, users also get a total of additional 16GB data as well. This plan as well comes with access to an annual subscription to the Disney+ Hotstar Mobile OTT platform.

Moreover, both mentioned plans from Vi, offer added benefits which include the "Binge All Night" feature which allows users to use unlimited internet from 12 midnight to 6 am. Users can also take over their unused data from Monday to Friday to Saturday and Sunday which is called the "Weekend Roll Over" benefit. In addition to this, users also get 2GB of data backup every month at no extra cost.

Star India is Now Disney Star

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 06:21 AM PDT

Disney Star

Star India, one of the biggest broadcasters in India for a very long time now, has rebranded to Disney Star. It is worth noting that three years back, Disney had completed the acquisition process of Star India and its several other assets from 21st Century Fox. It shouldn't come as a surprise to the industry people aware of the developments as Disney Star was the name that was unofficially used by many after Disney had acquired Star India.

The name was officially announced to the general public on April 14, 2022. Disney Star is the owner of many big General Entertainment Channels (GEC) such as Fox Life, Nat Geo, Asianet, UTV and Hungama, along with others. Star India's Twitter handle has been renamed Disney Star.

Disney Star to Launch Odia GEC Star Kirano on June 1, 2022

Disney Star is going to soon launch its new regional Odia GEC channel, Star Kirano. Note that the channel was supposed to launch on January 24, 2022. But it has been delayed to June 1, 2022.

The company has announced that it will be available in both HD and SD channels. Disney Star already has regional channels in the following languages — Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil. This will be the first time that the company will be stepping into offering a channel with Odia language content.

For the unaware, Kirano is the Odia form of the Indian word Kiran (it means 'ray of light'). The launch of the channel will also be a good boost to the Odia TV industry. People who watch Odia content will mostly know about two TV channels — Tarang TV and Zee Sarthak. But none of these channels is available in HD resolution. However, Disney Star owned Star Kirano will be available in both SD and HD resolution options. On May 15, Disney Star is also going to launch Pravah Picture in both SD and HD resolution.

DoT Is Making the Life of Indian Telecom Operators Easy With RoW Draft Policy Guidelines

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 04:34 AM PDT

DoT

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued draft policy guidelines addressing the right of way (RoW) procedures across different Indian states to help with the proliferation of modern infrastructure ahead of the 5G launch in India. With 5G networks, the need for more fiberised towers, street furniture for small cell deployment and more infrastructure will increase. Thus, addressing the RoW issues is very significant to ensure that the 5G rollout is a success for the telecom operators in India.

RoW Inconsistencies a Major Problem for Telecom Operators

The telecom operators have been facing a major problem of inconsistent RoW policies across states for years now. Because of this, they can't plan their capex ahead of time and also have to wait for long periods for approvals.

According to an ET Telecom report, the central government has prepared the 'Draft Policy Guidelines on Right of Way (RoW) for Establishment of Telecommunications Infrastructure' to outline the principles related to the RoW permissions.

Across India, only 18 states currently follow the Indian Telegraphy RoW Rules 2016. The remaining states follow their own RoW policies due to which the telcos have a very big disadvantage when it comes to the overall cost of deploying and owning the infrastructure and network.

The central government has prescribed that telecom operators don't need to pay an application fee to any person or entity over the immovable property of the local/government authority when they are looking to install small cells and optical fiber cable (OFC) needed to connect small cells.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has already piloted deploying street furniture in different parts of the country. These developments are positive for the telecom operators who are eyeing to invest lakhs of crores into the building and scaling of the infrastructure across the country to provide digital network services. A fixed solution to RoW issues is the need of the hour.

BSNL Prepaid Plan Offer Long-Term Validity Lovers Should Not Miss Out On

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 02:55 AM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecom operator in India is offering users additional validity with two major long-term plans. The two plans that I am talking about here are PV2999 and PV2399. Both of these plans will now carry an additional validity of 90 and 60 days. With this, the PV2999 plan will come with a total validity of 455 days and the PV2399 will come with a total validity of 425 days. The offer is valid until June 29, 2022. The freebies offered by both the plans will also be available during the additional validity period. If you want to check out the benefits offered by both these plans, click here. Note that this is the summer offer for the customers from BSNL.

BSNL Removed FRC/PV 106 from Offerings and Rationalises FRC 108

Back on April 1, 2022, BSNL had removed FRC/PV 106 from its offerings. The PV106 will not be available for customers now in Chennai. Further, the state-run telco had rationalised the FRC (first recharge voucher) 108 on April 1, 2022.

This plan now comes with unlimited voice calling, 500 SMS, and 1GB of daily data (internet speed reduced to 80 Kbps after consumption of fair-usage-policy (FUP) data for 28 days). It is a solid short-term validity plan on offer from BSNL.

The validity of 28 days is sufficient for the money that BSNL is charging from its customers.

Users who are interested in taking advantage of the summer offer rolled out by BSNL or recharging with the rationalised FRC 108, can go to the telco's website and recharge. For getting a new BSNL SIM, you can reach out to the nearest BSNL office or mobile SIM retailer. BSNL is currently offering prepaid plans with the lowest tariffs in India and is in the process to launch 4G soon. The state-run telco has already placed an order worth Rs 550 crore with the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to procure 40W radios for 6000 sites.

Apple Has Multiple Macs Lined Up With Different Variants of M2 Chip: Report

Posted: 15 Apr 2022 01:15 AM PDT

Apple

Apple is reportedly testing at least nine different Macs with four variants of the M2 chip. The Cupertino tech giant had recently released the new M1 chip variant called – M1 Ultra. There might be M2 Ultra in the works already with an even more powerful processing and overall performance. Macs powered by the M1 chip are already very powerful. But these new generation M2 chipsets are expected to deliver even better performance.

A recent Bloomberg report, citing developer logs, suggests that Apple is working on at least nine new Macs using four different M2 chips.

Which Could be These Four New M2 Chips?

The four new M2 chips could be the M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max, and M2 Ultra. Multiple new Macs powered by the new M2 chipset could come in the near future. A new redesigned MacBook Air is reportedly in the works along with a new affordable MacBook Pro. Then in the desktop side of things, a new Mac mini with the M2 chip and new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips might be coming as well.

There might also be a new Mac Pro with a chipset that will succeed the Mac Studio powered by the M1 Ultra. The Bloomberg report suggests that Apple is currently internally testing all these Macs with the alleged new chipsets.

The Cupertino tech giant could make some announcements regarding the same in the upcoming WWDC 2022 event that is scheduled for the near future. It hasn't been long since Apple came out with the M1 Pro and the M1 Max chips. It would have been good if Apple could bundle these chips with slightly inferior specifications MacBook laptops. It would have been great for the Apple fans who are waiting for an affordable yet more powerful MacBook. WhatsApp Community Announced

The social media messaging platform WhatsApp keeps bringing in updates and new features that enhance the overall experience of the users. The Meta-owned platform has now introduced its latest community feature that will allow users to bring their WhatsApp Groups under one hat. In addition to this, four new features for groups have also been launched on the platform which includes admin delete, large voice calls, message reactions, and large file sharing. Let's find out more.

What Will ‘Communities’ Offer?

The community feature has been rumoured for quite a while now and has finally been unveiled. WhatsApp in a blog post stated that with the help of communities, users will now be able to receive updates sent to the entire Community and easily organize smaller discussion groups on what matters to them. Moreover, admins will find new tools for their disposition such as announcement messages which will be sent to everyone and will also have control over which groups are to be included.

WhatsApp further added that Communities will make it easier for a school principal to bring all the parents of the school together to share must-read updates and set up groups about specific classes, extracurricular activities, or volunteer needs. Hence, it is very clear that with the introduction of the community feature, schools, local clubs, non-profit organizations and more will now be able to come together avoiding any sort of communication gap.

The Four New Group Features

Talking about the four new features added to the group, the first one that has been introduced is reactions. Users in the group will now be able to react with an emoji in the group chats without having a need to send a large number of text messages. Currently, users have to send a text message to react to a message.

Another feature that has been launched is Admin Delete. The Admin Delete feature will give the admin the control to delete any message in the group that they find problematic or delinquent from everyone's chat. The third feature is file-sharing with which WhatsApp is increasing file sharing to support files up to 2GB allowing multiple people to come together on a project.

Lastly, the company has introduced a larger voice calling feature. Initially, the number of people on a voice call used to be 4 which was then increased to 8. Now WhatsApp will allow up to 32 users on a single voice call and has also updated the voice calls interface on the platform. These features will be rolled out in the upcoming weeks even before the communities are ready as informed by the company.
