When it comes to postpaid plans, all three private telcos offer a Rs 399 plan with different benefits. These plans from the telcos are provided for their budget users. Mentioned below are the similar cheap postpaid plans offered by Airtel, Vi and Jio for users to choose from.

Bharti Airtel's Affordable Offer

Airtel offers 4G plans with a lot of amazing benefits. The cheapest plan offered by the telco is Infinity Family Plan 399. Airtel offers a postpaid plan at a price tag of Rs 399 per month which provides 40 GB monthly data with rollover up to 200 GB along with unlimited calls. 4G Smartphones Rising Price Not a Good Sign for Telcos in General

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 05:24 AM PDT

4G Smartphones

4G smartphones are getting more expensive as days go by. This has happened because the COVID-19 spread across the world. Supply chains have been hit, and the cost of shipment of mobile parts has increased. Even the chipset costs have gone up due to extremely high demand, whereas there is a very limited supply.

Indian telcos are trying to move the 2G users to 4G as fast as possible. It is in the interest of the telcos as they want to earn higher revenues by potentially increasing the average revenue per user (ARPU) figure.

But shifting from a cheap 2G phone to a 4G phone is something that many legacy network users won't like to do if the 4G smartphones are expensive.

Mukesh Ambani Wants India to Become 2G Mukt

In his earlier statements, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has said that Jio wants India to become a 2G Mukt country. This will enable better connectivity access to people who are still using legacy networks. Further, it would help the industry in earning more revenue.

Most of the 2G network users are people who are very old and don't find 4G to be any use for them or people who are in rural areas where there are no 4G networks. Reliance Jio had also tried to come out with the JioPhone Next, an affordable 4G smartphone for the Indian masses to ensure that everyone could carry a 4G device. But upon the launch of the smartphone, it was pretty clear that JioPhone Next wouldn't be the device that would attract 2G users. The reason was its price. It was unlike anything that Jio had hinted to users to deliver.

Smartphones launching even in the midrange or the budget range category today aren't as affordable as they used to be. The reason is the supply chain issues in the global market, which are inflating the manufacturing costs for the smartphone vendors.

Legacy networks are only adding to the maintenance cost of the operators and aren't earning them enough money. Telcos need to find a solution to this issue pretty soon.

Apple Remains Secondary Smartphone Market Leader Globally

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 04:24 AM PDT

Apple

Apple is the secondary smartphone market leader globally. People purchased a ton of refurbished smartphones in 2021. The flagship premium smartphones can be too expensive for the majority. These users seek for refurbished or second-hand smartphones to get the flagship features at more affordable prices.

According to the Counterpoint Research's Global Refurb Smartphone Tracker, the volume of refurbished smartphones grew by 15% YoY in 2021. This growth came despite the growth of 4.5% YoY in new smartphone shipments. As per the report, a lot of users are going for the refurbished Apple and Samsung smartphones.

India and Latin American Markets Saw the Most Growth in Volumes of Refurbished Smartphones

In 2021, the refurb market grew in the smartphone segment. This was because of more availability of refurbished smartphones, but also because of the sustainability factor and better quality checks, certifications, and warranty options.

Since 2018, refurb players have matured significantly and are looking to scale up volumes of refurbished smartphones. According to the report, Apple was the leader in the secondary smartphone market.

Senior analyst Glen Cardoza said the volumes of refurbished smartphones are growing YoY in developing markets such as India, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Cardoza added that these markets will see further growth as there is a lot of unorganised business and a large rural demographic which is yet to be captured.

However, the average selling price (ASP) of the 4G smartphones grew during the year. It makes sense as the more the demand, the higher the prices.

Research director Jeff Fieldhack said the Indian and the Latin American markets saw the highest growth in the selling of refurbished smartphones in 2021.

In India, the growth rate for the volume of refurbished smartphones grew by 25% in 2021. Budget-conscious users go for second-hand devices to get them for a lower average selling price. The two to three-year-old flagships can be purchased at a 40%-70% discount over the new ones in the secondary markets.

Opinion: 5G in India Requires Telcos to Work Together

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:00 AM PDT

5G

The Indian telecom market is a place of ruthless competition. In the last decade, multiple telecom companies serving directly to consumers went out of business because they couldn't sustain the evolving market in India. Only three private telecom operators remain, and out of the three, only two are in a stable condition.

5G is the next step for India and the telecom industry in the country. But 5G is not going to be the same as previous-generation networks. It will involve a lot of new elements, and the arrival of 5G will change the market forever.

While competing to stay on top is a natural tendency of the companies, with 5G, things need to change a little. The perspective of the industry should be towards making 5G successful in the country to ensure that the economy benefits from it.

This will only happen if the telecom operators start working together. To start with, the telcos need to start sharing core infra with each other.

DoT Had Allowed Infrastructure Sharing

In 2021, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) allowed the telecom operators to share active infrastructure with each other. This included the core elements as well. The move was aimed at helping telcos to come out with new services faster and with lesser cost on the deployment of the network and its infrastructure.

Sharing can benefit both the original owner of the infrastructure and the party renting it. This will be very crucial for the rollout of 5G networks in India. The need for dense infrastructure is there for 5G, and the telcos will have to spend lakhs of crores if they want to deliver PAN India 5G coverage.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has said many times that the industry needs to work together ahead. The low average revenue per user (ARPU) figure of the industry exists right now because each of the telcos is trying to undercut the other in some way or some area.

While this is slightly going away with tariff hikes kicking in, the telcos also need to work together in other areas. There will be a ton of new technologies coming into the market very soon. The digital era is already at its peak, and with 5G, things will become even more intense.

To reach new areas fast and capitalise on the investments to get a good return on investment (RoI), the telcos will have to share infra with each other. The government has also allowed telecom players to access satellite broadband for backend support.

Reliance Jio Might Report Significant ARPU Gain in the Coming Quarters

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 11:44 PM PDT

jio

Reliance Jio, India's number one telecom operator might report significant average revenue per user (ARPU) gains in the coming months. ARPU figure has become a focal point for the telecom industry. Because of the cutthroat competition and low tariffs, all the telcos had to suffer through the problem of low ARPU. Neither had any option but to keep offering lower tariffs to ensure that they have enough subscriber market share to sustain. But this hurt their revenues and the overall capacity to grow.

Reliance Jio ARPU Gain Has been Delayed

Note that Jio has been clearing its inactive user base for a few months since tariff hikes. The telco has been able to improve its VLR subscriber percentage very aggressively in a short span. This will also reflect positively on the ARPU of the telco for the last quarter of FY22.

Further, it is worth remembering that Reliance Jio has a lot of subscribers on the long-term plans. This means that many would have subscribed to the higher tariff plans in the March quarter for the first time. This means that the ARPU gain for Jio should be substantial.

The way Reliance Jio is clearing its inactive subscriber base, it won't be long when its VLR subscriber percentage would come very close to that of Bharti Airtel.

Reliance Jio's overall subscriber base dipped by 3.66 million in February 2022 while its active user base grew by 10 million users. Note that here we are talking about the wireless subscribers.

Jio's overall subscriber base currently stands at 402.73 million. The telco has high aspirations of reaching the 500 million user milestone. It will take a lot of time for the telco to reach there as the quality of service is almost the same as provided by Airtel and the tariffs aren't very much different either.

The growth of the active user base by 10 million in the short month of February is a good thing for the telco. It shows the consumer confidence in the company.

Reliance Jio Delivered Fastest 4G Download Speed in March 2022

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 08:21 PM PDT

Jio

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio delivered the fastest average 4G download speed to users in India in March 2022. Vodafone Idea (Vi) lead the category in upload speeds. As per a PTI report, TRAI's data suggests that both Vi and Airtel delivered 17.9 Mbps and 13.7 Mbps average download speeds to their users. Jio delivered an average download speed of 21.1 Mbps. Vi isn't too far from Jio, but Airtel's speed is considerably lower than what many would like to see. Note that this speed data is based on an average basis.

Reliance Jio's Average Download Speed Jumped Up

Reliance Jio's average download speed has gone up by 2.5% to 21.21 Mbps in March 2022 from 20.60 Mbps in February 2022. At the same time, Vi and Airtel have recorded a 2.7% and 8.6% increase in average download speeds during March when compared to February.

As mentioned above, Vi maintained the lead when it came to average upload speeds delivered. The third-largest telecom operator was able to deliver an average upload speed of 8.2 Mbps in March 2022.

Compared to this, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) delivered 7.3 Mbps, 6.1 Mbps, and 5.1 Mbps average upload speeds. Despite the lack of 4G, BSNL's average upload speeds are not bad at all.

For the unaware, the role of download speed is to help users consume content or data from the internet as fast as possible, and the upload speed is to help with sending pictures or videos to contacts and more.

TRAI collects the speed data through its MySpeed application on a real-time basis, and then on the basis of that study which operator delivered the best download and upload data throughout a particular month. There are other speed testing platforms that share similar kinds of data, but their results are often very different from what TRAI says.

BSNL

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has just released the monthly performance report of the telcos for February 2022. From the report, it can be seen that BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has added new active wireless subscribers in February. While the overall subscriber base of BSNL has dipped, the telco has added new active subscribers during the month. The same is the case with Reliance Jio. Only Bharti Airtel's overall wireless subscriber base grew in February 2022.

BSNL Added Active Wireless Users in Both January and February 2022

BSNL has added new active subscribers during the first two months of 2022. Refer to the table below to understand what's been happening.

– Table for understanding the active subscriber addition/subtraction for the telcos (as per TRAI data). Note that the data in the table is mentioned in millions.

BSNL

From the data above, one can see that BSNL has constantly been adding new wireless active subscribers despite the absence of 4G. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have also added new wireless active subscribers, which is a positive for both the telecom operators. Vodafone Idea (Vi) is the only telco that has constantly been losing active wireless subscribers.

Jio has made huge strides in improving its percentage of VLR (active) subscribers. From 87.64% VLR subscribers in December 2021, Jio has attained a figure of 94.01% VLR subscribers. During the same period, Airtel's VLR subscriber percentage has made a marginal improvement from 98.01% to 98.08%.

Overall Subscriber Base Data for Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and Vi for February 2022

If seen on an overall basis, Reliance Jio has lost 3.66 million users in February 2022. During the same time, Airtel has added 1.59 million users to its subscriber base. Both Vi and BSNL's overall subscriber base declined by 1.53 million and 0.11 million. MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) lost 5,097 subscribers (0.0050 million).

Vodafone Idea needs to arrest subscriber loss and increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) figure further to be able to self-sustain in the ruthless telecom market of India.

Tata Play 500 Mbps Broadband Plan is Cheaper Than Jio But Has Less Benefits

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 06:14 AM PDT

500 Mbps Broadband Plans

Tata Play as well as Jio offer a high-speed 500 Mbps broadband plan for their subscribers. High-Speed connectivity is now necessary for a lot of things in the ever-transforming world whether it is work, learning, gaming, streaming or leisure. While at the first glance the plan offered by Tata Play seems better as it is slightly cheaper, Jio might be a better option because of the benefits that are bundled with its plan. Mentioned below are the 500 Mbps broadband plans offered by Tata Play and Jio along with the pack details.

Tata Play Fiber 500 Mbps Plan

Tata Sky recently changed its moniker to Tata Play Fiber, the plans, however, remained the same. The unlimited 500 Mbps plan from Tata Play Fiber comes at a monthly cost of Rs 2,300. Users can get this plan for the long term too, as the company offers the 500 Mbps plan for different validity periods. For a period of three months, users can get the plan for Rs 6,900, for a validity period of six months, the plan costs Rs 12,900 on which users actually save Rs 900 and lastly for a period of one year the plan costs Rs 24,600 saving Rs 3000 for the users.

Tata Play Fiber uses a 100% fibre network to ensure end-to-end connectivity with fibre optics directly running from the service provider to users' homes. This results in a seamless and consistent internet experience with high-speed connectivity. Users receive 3300GB or 3.3TB of Fair Usage Policy (FUP) data along with this broadband plan after which the speed is reduced to 3 Mbps.

JioFiber 500 Mbps Plan

When it comes to a 500 Mbps plan JioFiber has a pack that comes with multiple benefits. JioFiber offers a 500 Mbps plan at a cost of Rs 2,499 per month. The plan offers a symmetrical upload and download speed of 500 Mbps and provides seamless connectivity across multiple devices. In addition to this Jio offers a total of 17 OTT subscriptions which include access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and thirteen others. The Amazon Prime Video that comes bundled with this plan has a validity period of one year. It is to be noted that the price of the plan is excluding GST and it will be charged as applicable. Users can access the plan from the official website of Reliance Jio.

TRAI Believes New Category of Skilled Professionals Required for 5G Deployment

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 05:53 AM PDT

TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) believes that there is a gap for new types of skilled professionals who can help with deploying the network inside buildings or over buildings in a timely manner. According to TheHinduBusinessline report, TRAI has proposed a dedicated digital connectivity infrastructure (DCI) – designers, engineers, property managers, and evaluators. The digital ecosystem is only going to become more complex from here, and that is why these new professionals are needed who can understand the work fast and ensure that the network generation networks are rolled out in a timely manner.

First Time Street Furniture Will be Used

In a matter of months, when the 5G rollout begins, Indians will see for the first time small cells deployed on street lamps, traffic lights, government buildings, and more. The demand for street furniture is real with 5G as the mobile networks will operate on higher frequencies which can be interfered with quite easily.

TRAI has called for the need for a new category of evaluators – property managers who will evaluate the DCI to ensure that it is running all the time smoothly. It is the right time for TRAI to take steps to ensure that the commercial 5G rollout is a success in India. Infrastructure is going to be the foundation for all the connectivity services, including 5G.

Thus, professionals equipped with the knowledge of deploying telecom infrastructure in more complex environments (leveraging street furniture and buildings) will make a huge difference with respect to India advancing as a digital country.

Telecom operators will need all the help they can get when it comes to the 5G rollout. Building and leveraging sound infrastructure will be at the top of their priorities. But right now, there aren't very experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable people in India who can take up the role of a DCI evaluator and execute it to a necessary level. Thus, there will be a need for education and certifications as well.

JioFiber Brings New Entertainment Plans Starting at Rs 100

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 05:05 AM PDT

JioFiber

JioFiber has brought new entertainment plans for its users. Right now, if you are a JioFiber customer, you can only get over-the-top (OTT) subscriptions if you are purchasing the Rs 999+ plans. This amount is unaffordable for many people living in India. To give them something extra, JioFiber has launched new entertainment plans. These plans are meant as an extension for the Rs 399 and Rs 699 plans, which offer users 30 Mbps and 100 Mbps download/upload speeds.

JioFiber has launched two new plans — Entertainment and Entertainment Plus. Let's take a look at the details of these two plans.

JioFiber Entertainment Plan at Rs 100 Per Month

The new Entertainment plan will be an extension to the Rs 399 or the Rs 699 plan. You will first have to purchase either of these plans and then get the Entertainment plan for Rs 100 per month, and with that, users will get subscription to six OTT apps.

JioFiber Entertainment Plus Plan at Rs 200 Per Month

If you want access to more apps, you can go with the Entertainment Plus plan, which will come at Rs 200 per month and give access to 14 OTT apps.

These plans are available to JioFiber postpaid customers. So if you are a prepaid JioFiber customer, you need to first convert into a postpaid customer. Then you can also claim a Jio Set-Top Box (STB) if you are purchasing an entertainment plan from the company.

There are no other changes to any other plans. If you still want to continue with your entry-level plans from JioFiber without any OTT subscriptions, you can do that. However, if you want OTT subscriptions, your best bet would be to go for the JioFiber entertainment plans, which are very affordable compared to what other ISPs (internet service providers) are offering. This gives every consumer of the telco a chance to get access to entertainment content platforms.
