Truecaller Discontinues Call Recording Feature

Posted: 22 Apr 2022 08:13 PM PDT

Truecaller

Truecaller, a major and popular voice calling app used by millions of users has announced that it will be discontinuing the call recording feature. This is in line with the policies that Google has announced recently. For the unaware, Google said that it wouldn't allow third-party applications to offer voice calling recording feature in Android smartphones from May 11. None of the voice call recording apps will work on Android devices from May 11.

Truecaller, which allowed users to record voice calls will be removing the feature from its app. Until now, the app was offering the recording feature for free to the users. But it will be removed from the app since it is not an in-built option offered with Android smartphones.

Google to Still Allow Voice Call Recording, but With In-Built System Only

Google is going to allow voice calling recording via pre-loaded and in-built feature only. This means that users will still be able to record voice calls, but not with third-party applications. There are many companies that offer their smartphones with voice calling recording feature pre-loaded in their default calling app.

According to a News18 report, the feature will be discontinued by Truecaller for its users. Regardless, users can still record voice calls by putting the device on loud speaker and using another phone to record to the conversation.

Google wants to promote privacy and give users the peace of mind that their calls aren't recorded without their consent. Right now, the Google app which is pre-loaded on most smartphones for voice calling comes with a call recording feature but it announces to both or more parties on the call that the recording has started. This gives users the freedom to record calls but also keeps the privacy of everyone protected. This move from Google has had mixed reactions across the globe as some people are relieved while some are angry.

Private 5G Networks Will Not Hamper Revenues for Telecom Operators, Says BIF

Posted: 22 Apr 2022 07:36 AM PDT

Private 5G Networks

The Broadband India Forum (BIF) in a statement has discredited the rumours suggesting that the telecom sector will witness a loss in revenues and has said that private 5G captive networks will lead to increased productivity for the enterprises and drive better revenues for the telecom service providers. The president of BIF, T V Ramachandran in a letter to Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary, K Rajaraman said that telcos will receive a good portion of the revenue from the private network services which will include voice and data communications.

TRAI's Recommendations

According to a report from ET Telecom, Ramachandran stated that Captive usage in the current situation would only contribute a minor share in processes/applications like robotics, automation, etc., due to challenges in delivering the required SLAs through public networks. He added that because of this, the speculated loss in revenues for telcos via enterprise services is a misplaced one.

The recent recommendations provided by TRAI have been strongly opposed by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) which represents Jio, Airtel and Vi. COAI has argued that allowing enterprises to set up private networks will kill the 5G business case for them. Recent recommendations from TRAI suggest administrative allocation of the 5G spectrum on demand for private enterprise networks through a publicised online portal-based process.

Telcos have stated that if the government accepts the proposal recommended by TRAI, the telecom operators could lose a huge chunk of revenue in their 5G enterprise endeavours. They put forward the case that revenue loss to such an extent won't justify capital expenditure in setting up 5G networks. BIF which represents Cisco, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Facebook-owner Meta, Qualcomm and Intel among its key members, on the other hand, stated in the letter that A public telecom network set up by a telecom licensee would necessarily have to be one which optimises the various needs of a diverse population. It would be 'tunable' to a limited extent to meet specific enterprise 'QoS' needs.

The latest recommendations from TRAI on 5G pricing suggest that private enterprises directly obtain a 5G spectrum from the government and establish their own captive wireless private network (CWPNs), permission/license for which can be acquired via a “light touch’ online portal-based regime.”

BSNL Commissions One Additional 10 Gbps International Bandwidth at Agartala

Posted: 22 Apr 2022 04:19 AM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) recently commissioned additional 10 Gbps International Bandwidth for internet connectivity at Agartala through Cox Bazar, Bangladesh. The development took place on April 21, 2022. With this, users in Agartala will face less network congestion, and the latency of the network connection will also reduce. This will help people living in Meghalaya and other North-Eastern states of the country to experience better internet.

It is worth noting that back on November 26, 2021, BSNL had commissioned one 10 Gbps International Bandwidth in Agartala. With this additional 10G International Bandwidth, the state-run telco will help the people living in the area to experience better internet speeds and overall performance.

USOF Is Providing Subsidy for the Project for Three Years

The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) is providing BSNL with a subsidy or support of 80% for a three year period for the two 10G International Bandwidth commissioned in Agartala.

High-speed internet access will allow the area/region to see the establishment of new software parks and high-speed data centres for business purposes in the North-Eastern states. This will directly benefit the citizens’ living, thereby allowing them access to various e-services such as e-health, e-education, e-commerce, e-governance, e-banking, etc.

This will also help in boosting the employment rates and tourism in the area/region.

For the unaware, USOF is a fund set up by the government to help with providing network connectivity in rural and backward regions of India. The fund is under the administration of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

BSNL is hopeful of getting more USOF backed projects in the future as it is the only telco in the country that will be using equipment designed and developed locally. BSNL was working with the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) to develop local network equipment for deploying 4G all over India.

BSNL Might be Awarded Uncovered Villages Connectivity Program Says CMD: Report

Posted: 22 Apr 2022 02:09 AM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) might be awarded the uncovered villages connectivity program by the Indian government. This could be in line with the Government of India's (GoI) campaign of Aatmanirbhar Bharat for promoting local technology.

Pravin Kumar Purwar, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), BSNL, told ET Telecom that BSNL had sent a proposal to the GoI regarding the same. Purwar is hopeful of a positive response as the GoI itself wants to promote local technology and make India self-reliant.

There are still more than 20,000 villages that are uncovered with connectivity in India at the moment. These villages don't have access to basic telecom or digital connectivity services. The GoI already has a reserve pool of Rs 58,000 crore in the name of USOF (Universal Service Obligation Fund) for the same.

BSNL Will Do the Project in a Time Bound Manner

Purwar told the publication that the government is pretty serious, and he is hopeful that the project will be given to BSNL as the telco will look to complete it in a time-bound manner.

It is worth noting that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, two of the top private telecom companies in India, were recently awarded a project to deploy 4779 telecom sites by the USOF (under the administration of the Department of Telecommunications), which has an outlay of Rs 6,466 crore.

BSNL already has experience in working and deploying telecom networks in difficult terrains and the rural areas of the country and thus is looking to get the USOF projects in the near future.

Back in 2016, BSNL had executed and deployed an LWE-I mobile network initiative, backed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) across ten different states. What was special about this project was that BSNL completed it within a record 18 months.

However, in the previous year, the LWE-II program was awarded to private telecom operators while BSNL was ignored.

Purwar stressed the fact that there is no other telecom operator in the country like BSNL that is deploying indigenous technology.

Opinion: BSNL Can Give Serious Competition to Private Telcos, Specially Vi

Posted: 21 Apr 2022 11:32 PM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has millions of loyal fans and customers. Even though the telco doesn't have 4G networks present across India, it has been able to add new active users for two consecutive months. During the same period, Vi (Vodafone Idea) has lost users. If BSNL is adding new active users when it doesn't have 4G networks, things might go more favourably for the state-run telecom company when it finally launches 4G. BSNL is expected to launch 4G in 2022 itself.

Things have not been very easy for BSNL all the time. The Government of India (GoI) had made it mandatory for the telco to source its equipment for 4G from local companies only. But there were no Indian companies that had experience in this field with proven technologies. Thus, BSNL first had to partner with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to generate proof of concept (PoC).

The process took way longer than it was supposed to. There was approximately a delay of five months than the original date for finishing the 4G PoC with TCS. However, BSNL didn't waste all this time. As per a C-DoT ( Centre for Development of Telematics) official, BSNL was also working on 5G NSA (non-standalone) with 4G.

The state-run telco is not expected to take very long to launch 5G NSA as well. In terms of revenues, BSNL will earn from 5G without rolling it out to customers.

BSNL is expected to lease out its mobile towers to the private telcos for adding capacity for 5G. The infrastructure requirement for 5G is multiple times denser than with 4G. While the telcos can build these tower sites themselves, it will be a time-consuming process and one that will also involve a lot of money.

Vi Customers Can Potentially Go to BSNL

No one knows just how good BSNL's 4G networks will be. There are a lot of problems with the mobile network service of BSNL currently. Thus, with 4G, before experiencing what it is like, making any comments right now would be immature. However, it is worth considering that if Vi customers want to shift to a more affordable alternative, they will soon have both BSNL and Jio as options for 4G services.

Vi has been losing active wireless subscribers while BSNL is adding them. There's a clear indication that people are leaving Vi network and shifting to other operators. Vi needs to arrest the subscriber churn rate to ensure that it can stay in the competition for long. Just a higher average revenue per user (ARPU) figure isn't going to cut it for the telco and its investors.

BSNL to Start 4G Trials in Kerala in August 2022

BSNL is expected to start 4G trials in four districts of Kerala from August 2022. According to a report from TheHindu, BSNL is looking to go ahead with a state-wide launch of 4G in December 2022.

The company has already got the approval of using 800 towers for 4G trials in the four districts including Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur.

OnePlus 10 Vanilla Model Specifications Surfaces – 150W Charging, Triple Cameras and More

Posted: 21 Apr 2022 10:27 PM PDT

OnePlus 10
OnePlus 9

Now that the OnePlus 10 Pro has been unveiled, the brand will introduce its OnePlus 10 sometime later in 2022 which will come as a successor to the OnePlus 9 introduced last year. A new report from Digit India in collaboration with known tipster OnLeaks shares the specification details for the upcoming vanilla OnePlus 10. The flagship smartphone which might be priced somewhere in the range of Rs 50,000 arrives with pretty solid specs. Let's find out more.

OnePlus 10 Expected Specs

According to the report, the OnePlus 10 base model will come featuring a 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display that offers support for a 120Hz refresh rate. It is also expected that the smartphone will have LTPO 2.0 backplane technology which can adapt the refresh rate between 1Hz to 120Hz.

The report suggests that OnePlus is currently developing two variants simultaneously – one with Qualcomm chipset and the other with MediaTek chipset. The company is yet to decide which variant will be mass-produced. OnePlus is reportedly working on a variant with a next-gen Qualcomm chipset which is going to be Snapdragon 8 Gen1+ and the other with MediaTek 9000 chipset.

The processor on the device could be paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM along with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. The smartphone will most likely run on OxygenOS 12 based on Android 12. Talking about the camera module, the OnePlus 10 base model will come featuring a triple rear camera setup headlined by a 50MP primary sensor along with a 16MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro camera. The front of the smartphone could feature a 32MP selfie camera.

The previous iteration – The onePlus 9 came featured a 48MP primary camera, along with 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP monochrome sensor. The device lacked OIS but featured Hasselblad colour calibration which is most likely will be given to OnePlus 10 cameras as well. The smartphone could be backed by a 4800mAh battery with support for massive 150W fast charging support. OnePlus 10 is possibly going to be the first flagship device from the brand without the alert slider.

Starlink Signs First In-Flight Wi-Fi Deal

Starlink

Starlink, a SpaceX owned satellite communications (satcom) company, has signed its first in-flight Wi-Fi deal. JSX, a semi-private jet service, will be purchasing in-flight Wi-Fi service from Starlink. The deal involves 100 aircraft to be equipped with Starlink terminals. The value of the partnership is unknown at the moment.

Internet on commercial airlines will be one of the biggest advantages of satellite broadband services. Other satcom companies are also trying to do the same. Elon Musk tweeted back in 2021 that Starlink is in talks with multiple airlines to install its terminals on their aircraft for providing in-flight Wi-Fi service.

In a statement, the jet service company JSX has clarified that the in-flight Wi-Fi will not be charged to the JSX customers. Further, JSX said that there would be no legacy systems in place, such as requiring to log in to access the internet and more.

According to a Reuters report, SpaceX has sought regulatory approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to operate Starlink on shipping vessels and airplanes.

Starlink Had Tested In-Flight Wi-Fi Service With Delta

Delta Air Lines, a major U.S. airline, has reportedly tested the services of Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity. Musk had already said that he hoped to get the Starlink license for aircraft including Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 because they carry most of the people in commercial flights.

In-flight internet connectivity is one of the best use cases of satcom services. But according to an industry expert, installing a terminal inside the aircraft after it has already been built is an expensive affair for airlines. It is more economical and suited for the business of the airlines when they get the terminal installed while the aircraft is in the process of manufacturing. In the future, we might see every aircraft coming with a satellite terminal to provide internet in the air.
