| Apple Eyes Manufacturing Rs 47,000 Crore Worth iPhones in India This Year Posted: 27 Apr 2022 09:18 PM PDT
The financial year 2023 will mark the second year of the production linked incentives (PLI) scheme and has already started in April and the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple's contractors are eyeing to manufacture iPhones worth Rs 47,000 crore this year itself. This is a huge step up and is almost five times the Rs 10,000 crore worth of iPhones that were manufactured in the previous financial year by Foxconn and Wistron. PLI Scheme – A Boon for Manufacturers?According to a report from ET Telecom, iPhone manufacturers are not going to face any difficulties to qualify for the PLI scheme as the expected production is almost twice the actual requirement to become eligible. To become eligible for the scheme, Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron are all required to make iPhones worth Rs 8,000 crore. Moreover, experts anticipate that Apple will ship about 7 million units which will result in the company having its highest market share ever of about 5.5%. This will ride on the back of high demand for a wider portfolio of devices which is backed up by higher local production and attractive financing schemes. As of now, India constitutes less than 1.5% of Apple's global sales and according to the sources close to the matter, more than 60% of the iPhones produced in the country will be for exports. Notably, the PLI scheme was introduced in the year 2020 to drive manufacturers to India from China and Vietnam. There is a disability in the range of about 10% to 15% between India and its manufacturing rivals which the PLI scheme tries to offset by offering about 4% – 6% cashback over the period of five years. The total outlay for the scheme is Rs 40,951 crore over five years. As far as Apple is considered, the report suggests that the company is expected to produce phones worth over $6 billion at factory price in the second year of the PLI scheme. To recall, iPhone production in India commenced five years ago in 2017 with iPhone SE and now the portfolio includes iPhone 11, 12 and 13 as well. Previously back in December last year, the government announced a $10-billion incentive scheme for semiconductor production and design. |
| Telecom Sector Revenues for the Government Increases 89% in FY22 Posted: 27 Apr 2022 07:54 PM PDT
While the Indian government announced relief measures for the telcos in FY22, it also benefited from the free cash flow that Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio were generating. The government's revenue from the telecom sector jumped 89% to Rs 85,640 crore in FY22. This largely happened because of the pre-payments of deferred spectrum liabilities from Jio and Airtel. Compared to this, in FY21, the government's revenue receipts showed an income of Rs 45,401 crore. Government of India (GoI) Was Able to Go Past Its Target RevenuesIt is worth noting that the government had set a revenue target of Rs 54,886 crore from the Indian telecom sector. However, according to a Financial Express report, the actual amount that GoI earned was 56% more than the target. This happened despite no auction in FY22. The previously held 4G spectrum auctions took place in March 2021, which meant it was in FY21. As mentioned above, a big reason for the extra revenues is the pre-payment of deferred spectrum liabilities by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Reliance Jio had cleared Rs 30,791 crore to the government, while Airtel had cleared Rs 24,334 crore. Apart from that, the GoI received Rs 30,515 crore towards the spectrum usage charge (SUC) and the license fee (LF). The telecom operators have to pay 8% of their adjusted gross revenue (AGR) as license fee, while the SUC ranges between 3% to 5%. It is worth noting that there's a spectrum auction scheduled for FY23, which is expected to take place in two months. It will again help the Indian government in earning money from the telecom sector. Then there will be LF and SUC payments as well. The telecom operators had asked the government to reduce LF to 1% and remove all the USOF (Universal Service Obligation Fund) liabilities. For the unaware, out of the 8% LF that telcos pay to the government, 5% is USOF, while the remaining 3% is LF. The high percentage of LF is taking away from the cash flow of the telecom operators. |

| WhatsApp to Offer Monetary Benefits to Users in India for Using Payments on App Posted: 27 Apr 2022 05:48 AM PDT
WhatsApp is planning to offer monetary benefits in the form of cashbacks to users to lure new customers into using its payments platform. At the same time, the social media giant is also testing it for merchant payments. This will enable WhatsApp to compete with its rivals, such as Google and PhonePe, which have a major market share in processing the volume of UPI transactions in India. Much recently, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) had bumped the limit of users WhatsApp could have for its payments service to 100 million. This was a big positive for the platform as it already has 400 million+ users in India leveraging the app for texting colleagues, friends, and more every day. WhatsApp Will Give this Much Money to Users in IndiaAccording to a Reuters report, WhatsApp is all ready to offer up to Rs 33 ($0.40) as cashbacks to users for making transactions on its platform. Using WhatsApp Pay, users can send money to their contacts directly from the chat window. There won't be any minimum limit to how much money users will have to send to get this cashback from WhatsApp. The incentive will be spread over three transactions. Even if users are sending as little as Rs 1 to other users from WhatsApp Pay, they will be eligible for the transaction. WhatsApp is mostly to drive user acquisition for online payments and make people aware that they can transact through its platform. While the amount is not that big, it would still give many Indians a compelling enough reason to switch the platform to WhatsApp for making payments, said Neil Shah, Vice President, Counterpoint Research. The company told Reuters that it is running this cashback campaign in a phased manner to unlock the potential of payments on WhatsApp. It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Whatsapp will be offering users cashbacks. |

| Vodafone Idea Added New Users in These Circles in February Posted: 27 Apr 2022 12:23 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, added new wireless subscribers in select circles of the country in February 2022. These circles included Mumbai, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and UP East circle. In Mumbai, Vi added the highest number of wireless subscribers between December 2021 to February 2022. The total number of users added by Vi in the Mumbai circle for the above mentioned period is 2,58,722. As of February 2022, the overall subscriber base of Vi in Mumbai stood at 1,18,46,621, with a market share of 34.62%, more than any other telecom operator. In Gujarat, the telco added 77,322 (January and February 2022 combined) users, taking its total subscriber base in the circle to 2,38,67,662. In terms of subscribers, Vi is the second-largest telecom operator in the Gujarat circle, with a market share of 35.63%. Check the table below to understand the total number of subscribers Vi has in each of these circles.
Key Things to NoteFirst of all, the data in the table above has been shared by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). In Maharashtra and Goa circle, Vi is the second-largest telecom operator in terms of subscriber count. Both in Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, even though the overall number of wireless subscribers fell, Vi added new users. In Haryana, Vi was the second-largest telecom operator in terms of subscribers. However, the telco's overall subscriber base fell by 1.53 million users. Vodafone Idea (Vi) hasn't added new users for a long-time now, and the telco needs to address that issue by increasing capex to improve 4G network performance. Vi's active subscriber percentage is also behind Reliance Jio's figures now. While the telco is doing good in some circles, there's a need for addressing the business issues in a lot of other states, which are not mentioned above in the table. Vi had a total of 225.89 million active wireless users during February 2022, which was the lowest amongst the private telecom operators. |
| USOF Planning to Help Telcos Reach Rural Areas With Wireline Internet Posted: 26 Apr 2022 11:11 PM PDT
The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) was set to provide support to the telecom operators and internet service providers (ISPs) for providing connectivity services in the backward regions of the country. Hari Ranjan Rao, USOF administrator, speaking at the Broadband India Forum (BIF) event, said that fibre-based internet connection also needs to be offered to households in rural areas at very competitive rates. According to a PTI report, Rao also mentioned that almost 99% of the villages in the country are now covered with 4G networks and are getting data at very cheap rates. Last Mile Connectivity Needs to Reach Rural Areas as WellRao said the thinking at the USOF level is that a scheme should be rolled out which supports last mile connectivity in the rural areas through viability gap funding so that the networks can be taken directly to the villages and reaching households is possible. The Indian government wants all the 2.5 lakh village panchayats in the country to get internet access through the BharatNet project. As per Rao, over 1.47 lakh villages have already been covered, but now, since the Prime Minister has said that all six lakh villages have to be covered with optical fiber, the workload has increased, but the plans are still the same. Thus, Rao said that there's a need to go back to the drawing board and chalk out a new plan to see how it will be possible to reach six lakh villages with optical fiber in a short time. USOF is under the direct administration and supervision of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The telecom operators have to pay USOF, which is included in their license fee (LF). It is worth noting that the telcos had asked the government to scrap USOF payments from the license fee because it adds to their burden of cash outflow. However, the government hasn't said anything about this. |
