STL Posts Record Revenue of Rs 5754 Crore in FY22

STL

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) had a particularly good performance in FY22. The digital network integrator posted a record revenue of Rs 5,754 crore and a robust order book of Rs 11,639 crore. In FY21, STL had announced its total revenues to be Rs 4,852 crore, out of which PAT (profit after taxes) came to be Rs 275 crore. However, despite record revenues in FY22, the company's PAT fell to Rs 62 crore only. Lesser PAT could be because of reinvesting into the business.

STL Expects to Grow by 25% in FY23

Ankit Agarwal, Managing Director, STL, said the company is already witnessing inflationary headwinds at the start of FY23 and is taking actions to mitigate the impact on margins.

Agarwal added that this year STL would double down on technology innovation, customer centricity, and operational excellence to achieve 25% growth.

In FY22, STL's growth was driven by three sharp levers — a) growth in the optical business, b) expanding into international markets such as the UK, and c) building access solutions.

It is worth noting that in FY22, STL announced new manufacturing units in the US (United States) and the UK (United Kingdom). During the year, the company launched 'All-in 5G' solutions for converged and open-source networks.

In the first year of operation in America, STL was able to achieve a market share of 6% and reported a 25% share in the European market, up from 16% in FY21. The company's growth curve looks pretty aggressive in the international market.

STL boasted a diversified customer base which included big names such as Telecom Italia, Netomnia, Openreach, Meta Connectivity, Vocus, Giganet, PGCIL, and Power & Tel. Further, in Q4, STL filed for 57 patents which took its global patent portfolio to 733. Note that 60% of the patents which were filed during the financial year were in the core optical business.

The company was also able to bag the 'Great Place to Work' certification for third-year in a row.

Tata Play Offering Free Binge+ and HD STB to Users

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 04:38 AM PDT

Tata Play

Tata Play (earlier Tata Sky) has reintroduced the Dhamaka offer for customers. The Direct-to-Home (DTH) operator introduced the offer first in 2021 but discontinued it in December. However, the company seems to have brought it back. Under the offer, users can get the HD and Binge+ Set-Top Box (STB) for free from the company. But there are a few things that a customer has to do to become eligible for the offer.

Tata Play Dhamaka Offer Giving Binge+ and HD STB Free to Users

Tata Play Dhamaka offer will give a free Binge+ STB connection to the users who are making a lump-sum recharge of Rs 6,000 at least. If the customer makes this big recharge and is looking for Binge+ STB, he/she will get it for free. Note that the cost of a Binge+ STB is Rs 2199 for now. The price was slashed by Rs 300 recently after the price cut implemented by Airtel on its Xstream Box.

The Dhamaka Offer is also applicable for users looking for a free HD STB. To get a free HD STB from Tata Play, the user would need to recharge with a one-time amount of Rs 4,000.

The Binge+ STB will also be available for existing HD and SD STB owners of Tata Play. They can upgrade to the Binge+ STB for free with the Dhamaka offer from Tata Play.

If you can't understand the offer, you can reach out to the customer care team of Tata Play. Further, you can request a new connection or upgradation from the customer care team of the company.

The price of the Tata Play HD STB is Rs 1699 currently. With the Binge+ STB, users can watch both satellite TV content as well as OTT (over-the-top) content. You can also visit the company's website to make a request for a new connection.

Excitel Announces New 400 Mbps Broadband Plan for this New City

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 03:07 AM PDT

Excitel

Excitel, a fast-growing internet service provider (ISP), has arrived in Mumbai with its fiber broadband services. The company will be offering an all-new 400 Mbps broadband plan in the city along with the existing 200 Mbps and 300 Mbps high-speed plans. There will be no 100 Mbps plan offered to the users in Mumbai.

To compete with other brands, Excitel will be offering its 200 Mbps plan in Mumbai at the same cost as the 100 Mbps plan in other cities. This feels like a strategic approach from the company as it knows the 100 Mbps plans are very much in demand from JioFiber, BSNL and other major ISPs.

So Excitel will continue to offer the 100 Mbps plan in other cities, but in Mumbai, the company will offer three plans with 200 Mbps, 300 Mbps, and 400 Mbps speed.

Excitel Broadband Plans for Mumbai are Different than What Users get in Other Cities

There will be a Rs 2000 security deposit for the ONU device that Excitel provides to the customer with the internet connection. But there's no installation charge for the connection. The 400 Mbps plan of the company will start at Rs 899 per month. Note that in other cities, the same amount fetches users 300 Mbps speed.

The 200 Mbps plan will start at Rs 699 per month, and the 300 Mbps plan will start at Rs 799 per month. Users going for the longer validity plan can get these plans at an even affordable price. The great thing about Excitel plans is that they come with truly unlimited data. There's no Fair Usage Policy (FUP) on the monthly data, which is there in the plans of JioFiber, Airtel Xstream Fiber, and more.

Further, Excitel also offers OTT plans to the users. For more details about the OTT plans, you can reach out to the customer care team of the company through Excitel's website.

Vivek Raina, CEO and Co-Founder of Excitel, said that the average speed delivered in Mumbai is still under 50 Mbps, and thus Excitel is offering plans starting with 200 Mbps speed so that this figure can be changed.

Samsung Dominates Best Selling 5G Android Smartphones Globally in Feb 2022

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 01:58 AM PDT

Samsung

Samsung has been the top choice for people looking for a 5G smartphone. Out of the top 10 best-selling 5G Android smartphones, Samsung devices took five spots. On top of this, four of Samsung's devices were ranked at the top. The data was shared by Counterpoint's Global Monthly Handset Sales Tracker for February 2022. Note that the data focuses only on the sales, not the performance of the devices.

According to the report, Samsung took five spots out of the top 10, Honor devices took two spots followed by Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi each taking one spot.

Global 5G Smartphone Sales in February 2022 Details

Samsung

Out of all the 5G smartphones sold in February 2022, the data reveals that 67% of them were Android devices. Further, the top ten best-selling 5G Android devices in the list contributed to 20% of the 5G Android smartphone sales during the month.

Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G was the best selling smartphone in February 2022. It contributed to 2.90% of the overall best-selling 5G Android smartphones in February. Not much behind the Galaxy A52s 5G was the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G is top of the line flagship smartphone from Samsung for the year 2022. The other devices in the list as per ranking were — Galaxy S21 FE 5G, Galaxy A32 5G, Oppo Reno7 5G China, Honor 60, Vivo S12, Xiaomi Redmi K40, Honor X30, and Samsung Galaxy A22 5G.

As per the data shared by Counterpoint, India and the UK (United Kingdom) are the top markets for the Galaxy A22. The only flagship Android smartphone here is the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G. Almost every other device on the list falls in the semi-premium or mid-range category.

Galaxy S21 FE 5G, launched earlier this year, is also a great device for people who are looking for a flagship experience but at an affordable price.

Vodafone Idea Reduces Validity of Amazon Prime With Postpaid Like Airtel

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 01:20 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea has also reduced the validity of the Amazon Prime subscription offered with its postpaid plans. On April 18, TelecomTalk reported that Bharti Airtel had made changes to the validity of the Amazon Prime subscription offered with its postpaid plans. Following that, we can see the same changes in the Amazon Prime subscription offered by the postpaid plans of Vodafone Idea.

Vodafone Idea postpaid users will no longer get an Amazon Prime subscription with 1-year validity. Instead, they will get it for six months now. The telco's website says that the change came into effect on April 1, 2022. The company hasn't changed the validity duration of other additional benefits offered by the postpaid plans.

Be it the individual postpaid plans, family plans, or even the REDX plans, the validity of Amazon Prime subscription has been cut short by six months for all the plans.

Amazon Had Raised Prime Subscription Tariffs

Amazon had raised the Prime subscription tariff a couple of months back. From Rs 999 per year, the price had gone up to Rs 1,499 per year for the subscription to the platform. Amazon Prime brings access for users to a lot of apps such as Prime Music, Prime Video, and more.

Both Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel might have reduced the validity benefit of Amazon Prime because of the rising cost. What's strange is to see that even the REDX plan, which is supposed to be the most premium offering from Vodafone Idea, is also offering Amazon Prime for only six months.

Reliance Jio Still Offering Amazon Prime for One Year

It is worth noting that Reliance Jio, the largest telecom operator in the country, is still offering the Amazon Prime subscription with its plans for one year. Jio might also make the change soon following the decisions taken by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. All the companies are still offering multiple over-the-top (OTT) subscriptions with their postpaid plans. To check them out, visit their respective websites.

BSNL Gets the Project of Upgrading 2G Mobile Sites to 4G in Naxal Hit Areas

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 12:22 AM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be upgrading the 2G mobile sites to 4G in Naxal hit areas. The overall cost of the project will be Rs 2,426 crore, confirmed Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday. According to a PTI report, the cabinet has approved for BSNL to take care of the 2G mobile sites to 4G in the Naxal hit areas across ten different states.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Rs 2,426 crore worth of project has been approved by the cabinet to upgrade 2,542 2G mobile sites to 4G, said Thakur.

BSNL to Deploy Indigenous Developed Solutions

BSNL will be deploying indigenous developed solutions, including core network, radio network, and telecom equipment for upgrading the 2G sites to 4G. All of the 2,542 sites will be upgraded and run by BSNL, confirmed Thakur.

These are the following states where BSNL will work in the Naxal hit areas — Chhattisgarh (971 mobile sites), Andhra Pradesh (346 mobile sites), Bihar (16 mobile sites), Madhya Pradesh (23 mobile sites), Maharashtra (125 mobile sites), Jharkhand (450 mobile sites), Odisha (483 mobile sites), Uttar Pradesh (42 mobile sites), West Bengal (33 mobile sites), and Telangana (53 mobile sites).

BSNL will also be upgrading its current 2G/3G sites across India to 4G in the coming months. The state-run telco has ordered equipment for 6,000 mobile sites for now and is waiting for the vendor to complete it.

For the unaware, BSNL had collaborated with TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) and C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) to develop an indigenous 4G solution for its networks. The government wasn't allowing BSNL to go ahead with a foreign vendor for the 4G rollout. That is why the state-run telco took a lot of time as none of the Indian technology firms was experienced with making core 4G network equipment and other related solutions. In August 2022, we might get to see BSNL's 4G networks in some areas of the country.

Airtel Partners Cisco, Apollo Hospitals to Demonstrate 5G Connected Ambulance

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 11:25 PM PDT

Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in the country, has announced that it partnered with Apollo Hospitals and Cisco to create a 5G connected ambulance which transforms access to healthcare and saves lives in emergency situations. The companies conducted this demonstration in Bengaluru with the 5G spectrum that was allotted to Bharti Airtel by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for 5G trials.

The 5G connected ambulance was custom designed and equipped with the latest medical equipment, patient monitoring systems, and telemetry devices for transmitting the patient data to the hospital in real-time.

5G Connected Ambulance Brings Doctor Virtually to the Ambulance

A patient in a critical condition needs every second he/she can get in his/her favour. At such a time, a 5G network connected ambulance can make a lot of difference as it enables the doctor to reach out and examine the patient virtually inside the ambulance. ER doctors can help the paramedics in the ambulance with the AR/VR technology powered by 5G networks as the feed shared to the doctors by the network is very much real in time.

Ambulances can stay connected to the hospital with the power of high-bandwidth and low-latency 5G networks.

Ajay Chitkara, Director and CEO of Airtel Business, said healthcare is one of the most promising use cases of 5G and that Airtel is delighted to partner with Cisco and Apollo Hospitals to bring innovative use cases to the Indian market.

It is worth noting that this is not an entirely new use case. Vodafone Idea (Vi) had already showcased this particular use case to the media in a special event conducted in Pune in November 2021.

Regardless of which company showcased the use-case first, the important thing is the technology that can save lives. The faster doctors can reach out to critical patients and diagnose them, the more chances they have to live.
