DoT Might Have a Bad News for Telcos Ahead of 5G Spectrum Auction

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:04 AM PDT

DoT

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) might be considering skipping availing the airwaves in the 28 GHz band in the upcoming spectrum auctions for 5G. If this is true, it would be a big setback for the telecom operators who have invested heavily in their networks to make them 5G ready. 28 GHz band spectrum would be crucial airwaves for when the telcos decide to launch mmWave (millimetre wavelength) 5G services. But if the airwaves are not offered in the first place, that won't be possible.

According to an ET Telecom report citing sources, the DoT is likely going to avoid availing the airwaves in the coveted 27.5 GHz – 28.5 GHz band in the upcoming 5G spectrum auction.

Satcom Body Against the TRAI's Recommendations for 28 GHz Airwaves

The Indians Space Association (ISpA) recently wrote a letter to the telecom department asking to neglect the regulator's views on the 28 GHz band spectrum. The satcom (satellite communications) body wants the airwaves in the 28 GHz band to be only reserved for satellite broadband services.

ISpA is very much against the telecom department offering the 28 GHz band to the terrestrial network service providers.

In its recommendations, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had said that for mmWave 5G services, spectrum in the 24.25 GHz to 28.5 GHz band should be put under the hammer.

But due to so many conflicting stances and no ready solution in front of the telecom department, the final decision might be to avoid putting airwaves in the 27.5 GHz – 28.5 GHz in the upcoming spectrum auctions.

This would be a big blow not just to the telecom operators, but also to the government. The coveted airwaves in the mmWave band would have brought the government decent revenues had the telecom operators bid for it.

The satcom players in India just aren't comfortable with what the TRAI has recommended and now it has become a problem for everyone.

BSNL in Final Stage to Deploy 6000 4G Sites With TCS: Report

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:23 AM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is reportedly in the final stage of commercial talks with TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) for deploying 6000 4G sites. The department is working in a systematic way, and to take a technological leap, it also needs to take a risk, Ashwini Vaishnaw, India's telecom minister, told ET Telecom.

Vaishnaw further told the publication that the world is looking at India as a serious nation because it has been able to come out with indigenous 4G technology that can be upgraded to 5G.

BSNL Set to Deploy Indigenous 4G in India

BSNL partnered with TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), Tejas Networks, and C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) to test homegrown 4G technology. The trial process was completed successfully by the end of March, and now the government is waiting for the vendor to fulfil BSNL's order for 40W radios to be deployed in 6000 telecom sites.

After this, BSNL will place an order for another 6000 telecom sites. The state-run telco plans to give another order to TCS for 6000 more sites. Following this up, BSNL will deploy 4G in 1,00,000 sites across the country.

Note that TCS is yet to accept the order price of Rs 560 crore that was offered by BSNL. Vaishnaw is confident about BSNL's homegrown 5G as well. The telecom minister said that by early 2023, C-DoT should have a full technology stack of 5G, and the domestic manufacturers are already in the position to export 5G equipment.

It is worth noting that BSNL was recently awarded the project for setting up 2,542 mobile towers in the Naxal hit areas to upgrade them from 2G to 4G. The overall cost of the project has been estimated at Rs 2,426 crore. All of these sites will also be upgraded with the help of indigenous technology. BSNL will upgrade and run all the 2542 4G sites for the years to come.

Semiconductor Demand is On Rise Due to Substantial Growth in Electronics Production

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 11:34 PM PDT

Semiconductor Demand

The minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar in a statement said that the electronics production in the country has witnessed a significant growth whether it is for domestic consumption or the exports which have resulted in boosting the semiconductor demand in India. This creates a solid case for India to start manufacturing its own chips. The minister also talked about the other reasons that put up the case for India to start domestic manufacturing.

Why India Should Manufacture Semiconductors?

Yesterday a report informed that the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple's contractors are eyeing to manufacture iPhones worth Rs 47,000 crore this year itself. This is a huge step up and is almost five times the Rs 10,000 crore worth of iPhones that were manufactured in the previous financial year by Foxconn and Wistron. The financial year 2023 will mark the second year of the production linked incentives (PLI) scheme. To become eligible for the scheme, Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron are all required to make iPhones worth Rs 8,000 crore.

The minister of State for Electronics and IT was speaking in Bengaluru ahead of the three-day Semicon Conference 2022. He stated that there is more than one reason why India should get into manufacturing. He talked about the sturdy design and innovation ecosystem in the country. He further added that the country is leading in the three main drivers for semiconductors – automotive, computer and mobile devices and a new generation of processors which are data-driven, artificial intelligence. Chandrasekhar explained that India should not get into semiconductor manufacturing just because the whole world is doing it but rather for expansion of the digital economy opportunities to include semiconductors.

The Semicon Conference 2022 is to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and is envisioned as the launchpad to kickstart India's ambition of becoming the global semiconductor hub and nurturing the chip design and manufacturing ecosystem. Many global experts from the industry, academia as well as research institutions such as the founder of Indo-Us Venture Partners – Vinod Dham; Sanjay Mehrotra, President & CEO of Micron Technology; Randhir Thakur, President, Intel Foundry Services, Intel and more will become part of the conference.
