| MVNO in India, Are They Going to be Helpful Posted: 07 Apr 2022 02:07 AM PDT
MVNO stands for mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). In a country such as India, MVNOs can play a huge role in the growth of the digital economy. MVNOs can serve both in the B2B as well as the B2C model. But before we understand how MVNOs are going to help India, it is important to understand what they are in the first place. What is an MVNO?MVNOs aren't your regular telecom service providers. However, they behave as if they are. MVNOs sell subscription plans to users with data, voice calling, and SMS benefits. Some also offer entertainment subscriptions to over-the-top (OTT) platforms. What MVNOs do is they purchase the wireless capacity from MNOs (mobile network operators) and resell it to the consumers under their brand. MVNOs have their own customer care team, branding team, custom products, sales and distribution channels. An MVNO and MNO differ in one major way – MVNOs don't have direct access to the radio spectrum. MVNOs need to lease it from the MNOs under a wholesale agreement. MVNOs in India, What You Should KnowTo become an MVNO in India, the company first needs to obtain a license from the government for the same. For an MVNO to be successful, the company needs to enter into a wholesale agreement with an MNO. These agreements can be complex and might need a lot of expertise to negotiate. Further, an MVNO requires a solid and reliable technology platform to offer mobile products to customers. Thus, a technology partner must be chosen very carefully by an MVNO. An unreliable technology platform can result in a bad reputation and a loss of money. How Can MVNOs Help India in Becoming a Better Digital Economy? There are a lot of areas in our country where regular MNOs don't want to go and offer services. This is because the cost to reward ratio just doesn't match in such areas. But this is where MVNOs can step in and take the baton from the MNOs. MVNOs can customise their offerings to reduce the cost of services and thus offer affordable services in rural India, where MNOs don't want to go. MVNOs don't have to worry about a lot of costs that MNOs need to. Thus, they can break even faster than MNOs in rural parts of the country. MVNOs are a concept that a lot of regular Indian consumers aren't aware of. But these companies are going to grow as the need for digital connectivity increases. MNOs have a lot of unused capacity, which can be leased out to MVNOs. This would help MNOs to maximise revenues and utilise unused assets. |
| Airtel, Jio, and Vi to See Strong ARPU Boost in Q4 FY22: ICICI Securities Posted: 07 Apr 2022 01:26 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are set to see strong average revenue per user (ARPU) growth in Q4 FY22, said ICICI Securities in a note. This is because the private telecom operators will be able to see the impact of tariff hikes in a full quarter. In Q3 FY22, when the tariff hikes were announced, only the month of December was left. Thus the impact of tariff hikes was very short for the previous quarter. However, in the last quarter of FY22, the ARPU of the private telcos will grow at a much better rate. ICICI Securities said that ARPU for Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio would rise by 8.6%, 7%, and 8%. The analyst also added that Reliance Jio has a lot of long-term plan validity users; thus, the full impact of tariff hikes will be delayed compared to other operators. High-Cost 4G Devices Limited Addition of 4G SubscribersThe high cost of 4G smartphones had limited the addition of new 4G subscribers, which resulted in limiting premiumisation. The ARPU growth will be better than revenue growth QoQ (quarter-on-quarter) because of the high SIM consolidation post the tariff hikes. Further, two fewer days during the quarter reduced some of the benefits of the tariff hikes for the telcos. It is worth noting that the telecom operators are planning to hike prepaid tariffs again later this year. Both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have said that they will go with another round of tariff hikes within 2022 and not wait for two years like last time. This will help the telecom operators in increasing their average revenue per user (ARPU) figure further. The Q1 FY23 should be better for the telcos as the SIM consolidation level drops, which will help with market stabilisation. Many Jio users will recharge with the new tariffs for the first time in Q1 FY23. With the tariff hikes, the overall revenues for the operators should grow in the medium term. Vodafone Idea needs to arrest active subscriber loss to stay in the competition. |

| Oppo to Launch Own Processor Like Samsung, Google and Apple Posted: 06 Apr 2022 11:47 PM PDT
Oppo, a major smartphone company is reportedly working on launching its own smartphone processor. Currently, Apple, Samsung and Google are the companies that offer smartphones with self-developed SoCs. But by 2024, we might see Oppo joining the league too. Major smartphone vendors including OnePlus, Vivo, and more currently depend on other semiconductor manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek for powering their smartphones. But with its own processor, Oppo will be able to cut short this dependency and will also be able to design smartphones better according to the demand of its own chip. Apple and Google are top examples of what a smartphone can deliver if it is powered by a chip that is designed by the smartphone company itself. Apart from a chip, Oppo is also reportedly working on an application processor (AP) that is expected to go live by 2023. For the unaware, the AP will be an integral part of the mobile processor and will be made on the 6nm fabrication process of TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). Oppo Might be Planning the Chip for Low-End Smartphones at FirstAccording to a report from ithome, the company might be looking to power its low-end smartphones with the self-developed mobile chipset. Thus, for the flagships, the company will still work with MediaTek and Qualcomm. Regardless, this is a step in the right direction from Oppo. The faster the company can develop its own chipsets, the more it can control the overall design of the smartphone and its cost. The company will join the league of Apple, Samsung and Google in developing its own chipsets. However, all of the other companies make very powerful chips that fit into their flagships. But with Oppo, self-designed chips for flagships might be a little far right now. After Oppo, we might see some other smartphone vendors also going on the same path. More should clear in due time. |

| Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Likely to Have a Robust Fourth Quarter Posted: 06 Apr 2022 08:16 AM PDT
According to new findings from analysts, the three private telcos of India, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are on their way to reporting strong average revenue per user (ARPU) along with India mobile revenue sequential growth in the fiscal fourth quarter. This growth will be the consequence of steep tariff hikes imposed by the telcos in November-December 2021. To recall, Airtel, Vi and Jio had raised prepaid tariffs by 20-25% around end-November-early-December, 2021. Growth on the Back of Tariff HikesAccording to a report from ET Telecom, as per the estimation provided by Jefferies, Airtel and Jio will witness a 10% sequential jump in their India mobile revenues in the March quarter. BNP Paribas on the other hand evaluates Vi's to rising by around 5.5%. Furthermore, a note from BofA Securities states that there will be a robust Quarter-on-Quarter growth of cellular revenues by Indian telcos in the fourth quarter. Even though analysts believe, that there will be significant growth in the telcos’ March quarter margins on the back of higher ARPUs, the subscribers' addition is however expected to stay muted because of the price hikes and continued clean-up of low-paying users by Jio. Going by what analysts believe, only Airtel will be adding new subscribers in the quarter while Jio and Vi will go through subscriber loss because of steep tariff hikes. As far as the ARPUs are considered, Airtel is expected to report the highest ARPU growth among the three private players with a 14% on-quarter to Rs 185, according to BNP. Jefferies on the other hand estimates that Jio's will rise 12.1% sequentially to Rs 170. A note from BNP suggests that Vi will report a 7.4% sequential rise in its ARPU to Rs 123 in the March quarter. BNP further estimates that the overall revenue growth of the telecom sector will more than double at 9% sequentially in the fourth quarter of FY22 due to the high tariff hikes imposed in late 2021. BNP stated that the growth is expected despite the multiple factors such as moderation in user additions due to higher tariffs and handset prices, SIM card consolidation and more adversely affecting it. Notably, the telecom sector's revenues grew by 4.5% and 4.2% sequentially in the second and third quarters of FY22. |

| Realme to Follow Apple and Samsung’s Practice in Removing Charger from the Box Posted: 06 Apr 2022 05:35 AM PDT
Realme, a major smartphone brand, is now going to remove the charging brick from the smartphone's box. The trend of not including a charger in the box was started by Apple, followed by Samsung. Now, Realme, which is a budget smartphone brand, is also going to do it. The company has confirmed that it won't be offering a charging brick inside the box of Realme Narzo 50A Prime. An XDA Developers report said that Realme wants to achieve double zero targets like net-zero carbon emissions by 2025. Realme Narzo 50A Prime to Benefit by Exclusion of In-Box ChargerRealme said that not including a charger inside the box of Narzo 50A Prime has helped it in many ways. The company was able to add more upgrades to the device with the best price and offers in the same class. Madhav Sheth, the CEO of Realme, told XDA Developers that if the company was only giving a single 18W charger with each of its devices, it would remove the charger from the box. Only when there would be continuous upgrades to the chargers, such as support for 65W or 150W fast-charging; the company would add the chargers inside the box as these chargers might not be easily available in the market for the consumers because of being a new technology. Since 18W chargers are already available and people might already own these chargers, the company might offer 18W charging support with the Realme Narzo 50A Prime. The Realme Narzo 50A Prime will be geared toward users looking to make a budget smartphone purchase. Realme Narzo 50 is currently available in India for Rs 12,999 on Amazon with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The whole play of Realme is to offer the best to the consumers at the most affordable prices. The Narzo series of the company has always tried to do so, and removing the charger from the box might have a negative response from the market. |

| BSNL 4G Update: Telecom Minister Makes Major Announcement Posted: 06 Apr 2022 03:28 AM PDT
India's telecom minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw said in Lok Sabha that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to install 1.12 lakh mobile towers across India to roll out 4G services. According to a PTI report, during the question hour, Vaishnaw said that the homegrown 4G network is being appreciated worldwide and it has a core network, radio network, and full telecom equipment. The minister said that BSNL is in the process of ordering 6000 towers immediately followed by 6000 more and then finally 1 lakh towers to be installed throughout the nation for 4G network. In addition to this, Vaishnaw informed that telecom service providers fiberise their base transceiver stations (BTSs) installed on mobile towers and 7,93,551 BTSs have been connected with optical fiber. The number is fairly low compared to the total mobile towers there are in the country. For 5G to be a success and better 4G experience, more towers need to be connected with fiber. Earlier, Vaishnaw had said that BSNL would make its order for 4G equipment in April 2022. But no solid confirmation around this has come from the state-run telco yet. In addition to 4G, BSNL is also planning to launch 5G later this year. During the 4G trials, BSNL was also working on 5G. A C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) official had earlier said that BSNL will launch 5G NSA in 2022 followed by 5G SA in 2023. What will really happen, only time will tell as there are always delays when things concern BSNL. 4G Internet Connectivity Inside Trains to Come With 5GWhen asked about 4G internet service inside the trains, Vaishnaw said that it won't be possible till the time 5G arrives in the country. The reason that the telecom minister gave for this was if the train is running at 100 km per hour, then a 5G network is needed to provide seamless internet connectivity inside the trains. |
| Samsung Galaxy S22 FE Might Ditch Either Qualcomm or Exynos Processors Posted: 06 Apr 2022 02:19 AM PDT
The battle in the semiconductor industry is pretty intense and will only grow in the coming years as demand for Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices grows. Samsung Galaxy S22 FE, which is expected to launch later in the year, might ditch either Qualcomm or Exynos chipsets. In a surprise for its fans, Samsung might go with a MediaTek chipset for its Galaxy S22 FE device. Not just this, even the Galaxy S23 series might be powered by MediaTek chips. Note that this might not be the case for each and every unit, but only about half of them. Samsung is already known for offering a single smartphone model with different chips in different regions. Currently, the company is switching between Exynos and Qualcomm flagship chips for its premium devices. But in a new twist, we might get to see MediaTek processors in Samsung flagships as well. This might be to lower the overall cost of smartphones. Which MediaTek Chip Will Samsung Go For?According to a Business Korea report, Samsung might launch new premium smartphones, including the Galaxy S22 FE and the S23 series with MediaTek chips. Currently, there are plenty of flagship chips offered by MediaTek. These chips might not be as good as Qualcomm flagships in comparison, but they are more affordable and powerful enough to deliver a seamless experience to the users. Samsung might reduce the cost of the smartphones for end-users (unlikely) and try to gain a larger market share or increase profitability by offering the smartphones at inflated prices only. MediaTek has been gaining market share in the mobile market very aggressively. In Q4 2021, MediaTek led the global smartphone SoC market with 33% share followed by Qualcomm at 30%. MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC is expected to make a lot of positive noise in the company's growth performance in the first quarter of 2022. The demand for 5G chip powered smartphones are growing, and MediaTek and Qualcomm are in the race to offer better propositions to the smartphone OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). |
| Jio, Airtel, Vi Oppose Spectrum Allocation to Corporates for Private 5G Networks Posted: 06 Apr 2022 01:18 AM PDT
Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have opposed the move of spectrum allocation to corporates/enterprises for setting up their own 5G networks. In the next few days, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is expected to come out with its recommendations for the 5G spectrum auction. Before that, according to a Financial Express report, the private telcos have strongly suggested that corporate must not be allocated spectrum to set up their own 5G networks. If this is allowed, the telcos said that their participation in the upcoming spectrum auction would be lukewarm. This poses a threat to the government revenues. But if the government decides to allocate spectrum to corporates for private 5G, it would hurt the enterprise revenues of the telecom operators. Since 5G looks more like an enterprise play right, for now, it wouldn't make sense for the telcos to invest in the 5G spectrum if the corporate can set up their own private 5G network. Bharti Airtel to be the Most Affected Telco if Enterprise Revenues are HitBharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator, gets approximately 20% of its revenues from enterprise services. If the TRAI recommends that the government can allocate 5G spectrum for setting up the private network for enterprises, it will affect Bharti Airtel a lot. In the enterprise segment, Bharti Airtel is the leading telecom operator in the country. The telcos are also worried about the absence of a level playing field. The corporates won't have to maintain and comply with all the obligations that the telecom operators need to do; thus, it would clearly result in an unfair environment for the telcos. The concept of private LTE networks is gaining traction throughout the world. With 5G, the role of private networks would become more significant. There are a lot of advantages to the presence of private networks as well. While the telcos are definitely going to lose money if the government allows corporates to set up their own private 5G networks with spectrum allocation, it would also mean that network connectivity can reach parts of the country where the telcos aren't interested in going because of less economic viability. |
