Posted: 08 Apr 2022 09:19 AM PDT

Realme GT Series

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme launched a number of new devices in India at a virtual launch event. The headline of the event was the company's flagship Realme GT 2 Pro smartphone that came featuring Snapdragon 8 Gen1 chipset. The company is now gearing up to introduce two new smartphones in India – Realme GT 2 and Realme GT Neo 3. Realme GT 2 is a cheaper version of the Pro model and will come with a lesser Qualcomm chipset – the Snapdragon 888.

The other smartphone Realme GT Neo 3 will have specs quite similar to the Realme GT 2 and therefore can be expected to have similar pricing as well. However, GT Neo 3 could arrive with a MediaTek chipset with equivalent performance. The company's VP Madhav Sheth has confirmed that these devices will arrive during Realme's fourth anniversary, which will be celebrated on May 4. Speculations suggest that the Realme GT Neo 3 could possibly arrive with 150W charging tech, although nothing has been confirmed by the brand as of now.

Realme GT Neo 3 Specs

Realme GT Neo 3 arrives with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400pixels. The display supports a 120Hz of refresh rate. The smartphone is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8100 chipset which is coupled with up to 12GB of RAM and features 256GB of internal storage.

Telecom Operators Emphasise on Same Service, Same Rules to Thrive

Posted: 08 Apr 2022 08:23 AM PDT

5G Airwaves Allocation

Telecom operators of India have strongly restated the need for the adoption of the same rules and same service for the allocation of spectrum to space broadband providers. They emphasised the fact that any move to award airwaves for free would be arbitrary and it is also necessary for the centre to consider the administrative allocation of the radio waves to the telcos. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the Indian non-governmental industry body of telecom operators of India representing Jio, Airtel and Vi put forward its view on the same.

The Issue of Allocation of Airwaves

The Director-General of COAI, Lt. Gen. Dr SP Kochhar in a statement said that the association is firm on the fact that the spectrum should be treated similarly for anybody offering a similar service. He added that if an entity is not offering a similar service, you can treat it differently under legal jurisdictions or pronouncements. However, explaining the industry's instance he said that if the same person is giving service to a subscriber, and another one is giving service by other means, but the service is the same, then it should be treated at par with each other in terms of policies and regulation.

He said that the telcos are entitled to a free spectrum if someone else is getting it for free as the service are the same. The issue of administrative allocation of airwaves for satellite-based communications or Satcom services has been ongoing for a while now. Terrestrial operators which include Jio, Airtel and Vi have been clashing with the space broadband providers such as OneWeb, and Tata’s Nelco.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is all set to submit its long-awaited recommendations regarding the working of the 5G spectrum auction and its pricing by next week. TRAI is supposed to address the issue of administrative allocation of airwaves and its recommendations will aid the telecom operators to figure out their 5G strategies going forward.

The current price of the 5G spectrum in the 3300 MHz to 3600 MHz bands priced at Rs 492 per MHz has been called extortionate by the telecom industry based on the recommendation by TRAI. The industry had called for a price cut by as much as 95% and the government has supported the call by stating that it wouldn't think about making the price reasonable so that the services are available for users across the country.

Android 13 Might Arrive for Samsung Users Earlier than People Expected

Posted: 08 Apr 2022 04:17 AM PDT

Android 13

Android 13 is the next generation of the Android operating system that Google is working on. While Android 12 hasn't reached half of the Android devices across the globe yet, Samsung users might be able to enjoy Android 13 in July this year. Note that Google is yet to announce a public beta for Android 13. While that is expected to take place in May, a SamMobile's report has shed light on when Samsung users could see Android 13 on their devices.

Samsung Users Might be Able to Get Access to One UI 5.0 Open Beta in July

Samsung users might be able to get access to the One UI 5.0 open beta in July 2022. One UI 5.0 will be based on Android 13, and it is good news for Android lovers who own Samsung smartphones.

Also, according to Google's schedule, July is when Android 13 is expected to hit platform stability. If Samsung is able to pull off the release of the open beta of One UI 5.0 by then, it would be a treat for fans.

This is something that can be expected of Samsung because of the kind of efficiency the company conducts its business with. Samsung was the first one to release stable Android 12 for its smartphones after Google had released it for Pixel devices. There was a gap of mere 41 days between the release of Android 12 OS by Google and Samsung.

However, note that there are no official comments by the company regarding this. Depending on the way things go, SamMobile said that Samsung could change the date of release of the open beta for One UI 5.0.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 users could be a few of the first ones in the world to experience what Android 13 looks like. This time, Google isn't playing around with the overall UI too much. Android 12 was a major update in terms of design. With Android 13, Google is looking to bring refinements to Android 12.

CloudConnect Looking Forward to Digitisation of Communication Process: Vidhu Nautiyal

Posted: 08 Apr 2022 03:00 AM PDT

CloudConnect

CloudConnect, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), is looking forward to the digitisation of the entire communication process, said Vidhu Nautiyal, co-founder and chief revenue officer, CloudConnect Private Limited.

Talking from a B2B and enterprise standpoint, Nautiyal told TelecomTalk that a lot of enterprises had understood the importance of digital communication and communication as a service (CaaS). As per Nautiyal, this is where MVNOs would come into play in India.

This is just one area where MVNOs can make an impact. There are other applications and use-cases of the services and products that MVNOs facilitate, which can help India become a bigger digital economy. One of those use-cases noted by Nautiyal is the automation of airline communication which the Government of India (GoI) has already introduced.

MVNOs Are the Players Who Can Increase Footprint of Telecom Operators in India

The telecom operators are working very hard to put up the 5G network and its infrastructure. Nautiyal said that MVNOs are partners to the telecom operators, and they can take the footprint of their networks to small towns and cities where enterprises are in desperate need of connectivity services.

Speaking on cloud telephony, Nautiyal said that cloud communication had gained a lot of relevance and importance. Be it small, medium or a large enterprise, the need for a uniform communication channel is very important.

Regardless of whether employees can come to the office or not, they should be able to connect to the cloud communication channel and talk to the customers, and this is where MVNOs can help the enterprises, said Nautiyal.

The role of artificial intelligence (AI) is going to grow further from here, and Nautiyal said that CloudConnect is already working on developing AI into its platform. Small enterprises can benefit majorly from AI as the technology can help the businesses in understanding the customer mood and the problems they are facing without much hassle.

As for 5G, Nautiyal said that since everything is going online and with enterprises where the communication is mission-critical, reliable high-speed Internet connections are required, which 5G networks can deliver.

Vodafone Idea and Airtel Get Thousands of Crores Back from DoT in BGs

Posted: 08 Apr 2022 01:34 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

In a fresh development, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court (SC) confirming that it has returned the bank guarantees (BGs) to Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel. DoT had to return approximately Rs 15,000 crore to Vi and Rs 7,000-Rs 8,000 crores to Airtel in BGs.

The DoT has returned the BGs because the telcos have opted for a moratorium of four years on the spectrum dues pertaining to the previous auctions. Since there are no dues related to spectrum auctions in the short term, DoT returned the BGs so that money can be put to better use by the telcos.

Cash-strapped Vodafone Idea will be very happy because it has some funds now to boost capex levels to match Jio and Airtel as soon as possible. Vi recently raised funds via its promoter entities and is also looking to raise another Rs 10,000 crore from external investors.

Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Will be Happy With Government

The telecom sector is the backbone of the economy as it facilitates connectivity and digital services at the core level. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea will be happy with the move from DoT as the money served no purpose sitting with the government.

But the telcos will have to refurnish the BGs 13 months before the due date arrives for the next payment, which is still quite far from now. It is worth noting that the 5G spectrum auction is not far from here. Thus, this money released by the DoT will also aid the telcos in the spectrum auction, which is expected to involve thousands of crores.

The telecom sector is expected to flourish from the move, and it is a step from the government in the right direction. It is worth noting that nothing official has arrived from the concerned telecom operators regarding the return of bank guarantees by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

BSNL Gives TCS Order Worth Rs 550 Crore to Setup 6000 4G Sites: Report

Posted: 07 Apr 2022 11:37 PM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has given Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) a contract worth Rs 550 crore for setting up 6000 4G sites across India. The state-run telco is initially targeting areas of the country which are going to be highly profitable and where the infrastructure is ready. BSNL has plans of installing over 1.12 lakh new 4G sites across India to roll out fast-network connectivity services.

BSNL is Finally on the Way to Roll Out 4G

This is a positive development for the BSNL fans and supporters and also the consumers in the country who will soon get another option apart from the private telcos to choose from. The state-run telco has faced many hurdles in the last few years in rolling out 4G. One of these was to only use equipment and technology that was homegrown.

Being restricted to homegrown mediums, BSNL couldn't launch 4G services earlier. But the state-owned telco was working with TCS and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) for testing homegrown 4G solutions for the last few months. After multiple delays in the proof of concept (PoC) process, the state-run telco has finally completed the trials and given an official contract to TCS, reports Financial Express.

There weren't any experienced local firms or technology partners available in India that could have helped BSNL on the go. Thus, the process took a little longer than many expected. However, going by the words of the officials, BSNL is looking to launch 4G services by August this year. In addition to this, the state-run telco is also eyeing a 5G rollout.

BSNL will be the first telco in the country to roll out 4G with homegrown technology PAN-India. It will be interesting to see the strategy BSNL opts for competing with the already established players, including Jio, Airtel, and Vi, in the 4G market of India.

OnePlus 10 Might Not Come With a Qualcomm Chipset

Posted: 07 Apr 2022 11:19 PM PDT

OnePlus 10

While the OnePlus 10 Pro is already out, there would be a lot of OnePlus fans waiting for the OnePlus 10 and OnePlus 10R to come out as well. These devices would be more in the affordable range but still deliver a flagship experience. According to a tipster Yogesh Brar, the OnePlus 10 might not feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 that powers the OnePlus 10 Pro. Instead, the OnePlus 10 Pro might come with the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC.

This is interesting because with the OnePlus 9 series, OnePlus went with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chips for both the OnePlus 9 Pro and the OnePlus 9. Thus, this time the company might be trying to make more of a differentiation between the OnePlus 10 Pro and the OnePlus 10. Regardless, the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC is a 5G capable chipset built for flagships as well.

OnePlus 10 Ultra to Come as Well

According to the tipster, OnePlus is also working on a new model called the OnePlus 10 Ultra. This would be the first time OnePlus would launch a device with the Ultra moniker. Xiaomi is already known for launching the Ultra model smartphones.

While it is easy to expect an even more powerful experience with the OnePlus 10 Ultra, what will really be different is unknown at the moment. The OnePlus 10 Ultra might feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 Plus along with more RAM and a few additional features.

For now, the OnePlus 10 Pro is the fastest and most powerful flagship one can buy from OnePlus. Shifting to MediaTek chips for its flagships marks the beginning of a new era for OnePlus smartphones. Further, the OnePlus 10R might also feature a MediaTek chip.

OnePlus's strategy for selling smartphones has taken a complete U-turn in India and across the globe. The company has been manufacturing great smartphones, but there are more and more models coming into the market, a kind of strategy that other Chinese tech companies have adopted.

DoT Working With Other Bodies to Come Up With New Spectrum Law

Posted: 07 Apr 2022 08:12 PM PDT

DoT

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working with the ministry of defence, department of space, and ministry of home affairs to come up with a new law that will determine how the allotment of the spectrum will be done for several government and defence purposes. There's an inherent need for clarity around spectrum allotment in the minds of the policymakers because the Supreme Court had asked the spectrum to be auctioned.

As per an ET report, this new law will be called the Wireless & Spectrum Act and will replace the India Wireless Act, 1933. This new law will cover issues around the allotment, auction, and reservation of the critical and scarce airwaves among other details.

New Spectrum Law to be Introduced Soon

According to the publication's report, this new spectrum law is going to be introduced in the monsoon session of the parliament. The goal behind this new law is to create a roadmap for all wireless communications such as satellite and mobile with the best global practices and standards.

What's worth noting is that the new law which is in the works will supersede several of the Supreme Court orders and address litigation in the sector. Further, the law would enable the government to allocate or auction airwaves depending on the need of the hour.

There's a lot going on in the telecom sector of India related to the spectrum auction. The sector regulator is working on the recommendations for the spectrum auction while the telcos and satellite companies are fighting over how the spectrum should be offered to the relevant and interested parties.

The telcos (apart from Airtel) say that the spectrum should be auctioned for everyone to maintain transparency and ensure a level playing field. However. Satellite communications (satcom) players believe that the spectrum should be allocated in an administrative manner because this is a global practice and makes more sense for their future. TRAI's recommendations will give clarity on what's going to happen.

TRAI Removes USSD Fee Related to Mobile Banking and Payments to Boost Digital Economy

TRAI Removes USSD Fee

In the latest development of events, the telecom sector regulator has eradicated tariffs for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD)-based mobile banking and payment services from 50 paise per session earlier. The move comes in despite the concerns posed by telcos in order to boost digital financial inclusion and protect the interests of ordinary feature phone users. The new tariff order from the telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI) is applicable from Thursday.

The Move to Rationalise USSD Charges

The Telecommunication Tariff (68th Amendment) order issued by TRAI on Thursday stated that rationalisation of USSD charges is necessary keeping in mind the interests of USSD users and promoting digital financial inclusion. TRAI made the decision of subscribers not to be charged for USSD for mobile banking and payment service keeping in mind the comments received from the stakeholders. However, TRAI did state that it may review the charge after two years as it will be keeping an eye on the progress of such USSD services.

The USSD service is majorly used by feature phone users for things such as checking the balance in the bank account, cash withdrawals, transfer of money and more as these services do not require an active internet connection. The mobile ecosystem is expanding deep into rural India and is a prominent tool in promoting digital financial inclusion. Earlier in November 2016, TRAI had cut the per-session rate for USSD-based mobile banking transactions to 50 paise from Rs 1.50.

Telcos showed concerns over the move of making these services free in their submissions back in December, stating that it may increase the financial problems for the in-debt telecom sector. Telcos had requested TRAI to go for a graded cut in tariffs for USSD-based mobile banking and payment services.

However, the latest order from TRAI to rationalise the USSD charges comes on the back of the fact that the current tariff of 50 paise per USSD session was several times higher than the average tariff for a one-minute outgoing voice call which is about Rs 0.04 per minute. TRAI also mentioned in its explanatory memorandum that total revenue generated through USSD mobile banking sessions constitutes only about 0.00007% of the total revenue of the telecom sector.
