Poco C40 and C40+ Officially Confirmed to be in the Works

Posted: 18 May 2022 07:51 AM PDT

Poco C40 and C40+

The popular smartphone manufacturer Poco is apparently gearing up for the launch of a new smartphone under its C-series – the Poco C40. To recall, the Poco C40 was spotted at the NBTC certification site with the model number 220333QPG just a few days ago. The same smartphone has also been spotted on the FCC certification website. Now, the company has already announced the MIUI Global Stable ROM testing program for the device even though it hasn't even launched the Poco C40 yet.

The Chinese smartphone maker invited applications for Poco C40 MIUI Global Stable ROM testing via a post on its Poco community forum. The brand has invited applications for ROM testers for the device in the region of Indonesia hinting at a launch in Indonesia. Moreover, the company has also hinted at the existence of a Poco C40+ device.

Details About Poco C40 and C40+

The company has mentioned both Poco C40 and C40+ in its post on the community forum which most likely means that both devices will operate on the same firmware. This could mean that just like Redmi 9A and Redmi 9i smartphones in the past, Poco C40 and Poco C40+ could have distinct storage and memory options.

What's actually interesting is that Poco C40 comes with the model number 220333Q which is also the model number for the Redmi 10C smartphone. This could possibly mean that the Poco C40 and Poco C40+ are rebranded versions of the Redmi 10C. Redmi 10C was launched with a 6.71-inch LCD display. The FCC listing of the device suggests that it will boot MIUI 13, however, as per Kacper's claim, the handset will boot MIUI Go Edition.

The device was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset. We can expect up to 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64GB / 128GB of internal storage. There might be a 5,000mAh battery that supports 10W charging. As far as the camera specifications of the smartphone are considered, Redmi 10C comes with a 5MP selfie camera. The back of the device features a 50MP primary camera along with a 2MP secondary lens in the square-shaped camera module.

BSNL Prepaid Plans Under Rs 500 That Are a Steal

Posted: 18 May 2022 06:08 AM PDT

BSNL Prepaid Plans

The Indian telecom sector is dominated by the three private players – Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea. However, the state-owned telco BSNL also provides prepaid plans that offer benefits just as the other operators. Some of the prepaid plans from BSNL actually offer a remarkably good amount of data for longer validity at very cheap price tags. In this article, we are going to take a look at the BSNL prepaid plans under Rs 500 which are definitely a steal.

The Prepaid Plans

The first plan on the list is STV_399 which offers 1GB of data per day for a period of 80 days along with unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day for Rs 399. The plan also gives free access to BSNL tunes and Lokdhun content. The next is a similar plan but with slightly better benefits. The telco offers an STV_429 plan that offers 1GB of data per day as well for 81 days with unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day along with the access to Eros Now entertainment services for Rs 429.

The next on the list is a data-oriented prepaid plan offered by the telco. The plan comes at a price tag of Rs 447 and offers a total of 100GB of high-speed data. Beyond the set limit of 100GB of data, users can access the internet at 80 Kbps of speed. The plan comes with a validity period of 60 calendar days and even though it is mentioned under 'Data Voucher' on the website, it still offers unlimited voice calling along with 100 SMS per day. Along with the STV_447 plan, users can also get a subscription to BSNL Tunes and Eros Now Entertainment Services.

BSNL also offers an STV_499 pack for its users that has a three-month validity period. For Rs 499, BSNL users can get 2GB of data per day for a validity period of 90 days along with unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS/day. This plan does not come with any OTT subscription.

Vodafone Idea and C-DoT Sign MoU to Develop and Deploy IoT/M2M Solutions in India

Posted: 18 May 2022 04:57 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, has just announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) on the occasion of 'World Telecommunication and Information Society Day' (WTISD). C-DoT is the premier research and development (R&D) centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Both the organisations will leverage each other's expertise in their respective domains for deploying and developing IoT/M2M solutions in the country. Developing an IoT ecosystem has become an important aspect of every business that is looking to automate certain tasks and go digital. But there are a lot of challenges in deploying IoT solutions at scale. There are problems such as over the air (OTA) firmware upgrade, device network compatibility, remote device configuration, and more which are restricting the enterprises from reaping the benefit of IoT deployment at scale.

C-DoT and Vi to Work Together for Addressing Challenges in Deploying IoT Solutions in India

The C-DoT and Vodafone Idea have signed an MoU to work together to address the challenges that enterprises have to face while deploying IoT solutions in the country.

It is worth noting that Vi Business, the B2B arm of Vodafone Idea, is already offering IoT services to enterprises across the nation. This partnership between the organisations is going to help device providers in launching completely standardised and interoperable solutions in the market.

Arvind Nevatia, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), said the company is delighted to partner with C-DoT, which has strong capabilities for undertaking large scale development program programs in IoT and telecommunications.

"We strongly believe that IoT has huge potential, and as a leader in IoT, this partnership will enable IoT application and device providers to launch full-proof standardized and interoperable solutions in the market."

This will be a boost to Vi's enterprise business.

iPhone 14 Launch Event Date Leaked, More Products to Launch on Same Day

Posted: 18 May 2022 04:11 AM PDT

iPhone 14 Series

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 14 series later in September this year. According to new development, Apple is likely going to launch the iPhone 14 series along with other products in the 37th week of this year. The leaked date for the event is September 13, 2022. Other products that might be revealed during the event include AirPods Pro Pro 2 and three Apple Watches.

According to the tipster, LeaksApplePro, Apple is yet to decide on whether it will be an online or an in-person event. However, if it is an online event, Apple will start recording for the event by mid-August very likely, and things will become more certain. Note that Apple has not even closely hinted that it will launch the iPhone 14 series on the said date above, but a look at the history suggests that September should be the month for the new iPhone series launch.

iPhone 14 Details Leaked So Far

The thing with leaked details is that some of them are true, and some are just fan-fiction. Regardless, this time, going by the details shared by many known and credible tipsters, Apple is finally going to drop the 'mini' iPhone and instead will launch a new 'Max' iPhone. So, there will likely be four iPhones – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The normal iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro are expected to come with 6.1-inch sized displays, while the iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to feature 6.7-inch displays.

Further, there will be a difference in the pricing of the iPhone 14 series. Last year, when iPhone 13 series was announced, Apple hadn't changed the price of its devices and had kept it the same as the iPhone 12 series.

But the iPhone 14 Pro models are this time expected to be priced $100 more. This makes sense as well since the cost of components and the chipsets are also on the rise.

Airtel Performed Way Better than Jio, Vi in Q4 FY22

Posted: 18 May 2022 03:08 AM PDT

Airtel

The financial results for March 2022 quarter are out for all the private telecom operators now. Amongst all the telcos, Airtel's performance was way better than its competitors, including Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi).

When it came to revenue growth, Airtel reported an increase of 9.5% QoQ, while Jio and Vi's revenues were only 7.4% and 5.4% up QoQ in Q4 FY22. The data was shared by BofA Securities and was verified by ET.

In the subscribers’ department, Airtel again outperformed Jio and Vodafone Idea by adding 3.1 million net users, while Jio and Vi lost 10.8 million and 3.4 million users, respectively. If seen in a black and white manner, Jio was certainly behind Airtel in adding net subscribers during the quarter. But Jio's goal was to improve VLR or active subscriber percentage by removing inactive subscribers from the total user pool. It is worth noting that Jio was adding new active subscribers regardless.

Kotak Says Airtel's Business Ahead of Jio in Q4 FY22

Brokerage Kotak said that Airtel's overall India business was ahead of its arch-rival Reliance Jio in Q4 FY22. On Tuesday, Airtel came out with its quarterly results. The telco's net income went up to Rs 2,008 crore during the quarter, which was also aided by a one-time gain of Rs 984.7 crore on the sale of telecommunication tower assets.

Further, Airtel's average revenue per user (ARPU) figure rose to Rs 178, which is not very far from its short-term goal of Rs 200. The company saw growth in the business of its subsidiaries, including Airtel Payments Bank, Airtel Business, and more.

The company has been generating free cash flows and is raising fresh capital with way more ease than the struggling Vodafone Idea (Vi). It will be worth looking at the business performance of the telcos in Q1 FY23 because Jio is done with the SIM consolidation process, and Airtel isn't going to get one-time gains every quarter.

Wi-Fi 6E Routers Add New 6 GHz Band, Should You Upgrade

Posted: 18 May 2022 02:08 AM PDT

Wi-Fi 6E

Wi-Fi 6E routers are the next generation router technology that consumers will get to witness. With the presence of Wi-Fi 6E routers, a new 6 GHz band comes into play. This 6 GHz band is obviously capable of delivering faster speeds than the current 5 GHz band because of a simple reason – capacity.

However, Wi-Fi 6E is a technology that is yet to mature in the consumer market. Like every other Wi-Fi technology, the market will take its sweet time adopting Wi-Fi 6E technology widely. We are talking about years here, not months.

Wi-Fi 6E Routers, When Should You Upgrade?

There are multiple things you need to consider before upgrading to a Wi-Fi 6E router. First of all, you need to see whether you need it in the first place. If your router is capable of delivering sufficient speed over the 5 GHz network band, you probably don't need a Wi-Fi 6E router.

Second, check whether you have devices in the first place that can support connectivity with 6 GHz bands. Because if you don't own such devices, there's no point in a Wi-Fi 6E router.

Wi-Fi 6E routers fall slightly in the more expensive end as well. So, budget is also something that you will have to keep in mind before going to purchase a Wi-Fi 6E router.

If you are a tech enthusiast, surely you can go for one. You might want to experience what that extra speed feels like. But for average users, Wi-Fi 6E routers aren't an immediate need.

As I write this, millions of more Wi-Fi 6E supportive devices are making their way to the market. Look, we are still years from when we will see Wi-Fi 6E routers and supported devices in every corner of the world, but there's no harm in being an early adopter to experience the power of next-generation Wi-Fi technologies.

There are multiple vendors in the market which are already selling such routers. You can look them up online.

Is 4G Enough for BSNL to Turn Things Over

Posted: 18 May 2022 01:19 AM PDT

4G

4G networks from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be available in multiple parts of the country by the end of this year. The state-run telco is planning to strategically launch 4G networks in high-population and urban locations to make the most of its investment. BSNL has been working in harmony with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) to roll out 4G.

The PoC process is already over, and the indigenous 4G solution from BSNL has been a success. But a wide-testing of the networks is left, and that will kick off in August 2022 in Kerala and most likely other states as well. BSNL plans to launch 4G networks in multiple states by December 2022.

But the question is, will it be enough for the state-run telecom operator to turn things around?

BSNL has the Least Subscribers in the Telecom Market in India

When it comes to mobile services, BSNL has the least users compared to the private telecom operators. 4G launch should help with adding new subscribers fast, but it might not be enough for BSNL to keep adding new customers in the long run.

While the tariffs might be on the cheaper spectrum, the network service quality is something that the users would look out for. Things have changed, and now data experience has become a primary factor for most people when choosing a network service provider.

If BSNL can't provide high-quality network services, its 4G launch wouldn't make a huge impact. Users might keep their BSNL SIM as a secondary option just to keep another SIM active on their device while the private telecom operators keep hiking tariffs.

Most people would prefer paying more to a private telecom operator for better network services rather than just going after cheaper tariffs from BSNL.

5G Should be on the Books Soon

BSNL should not make the mistake of delaying the 5G launch for another few years. The state-run telco's 4G networks are coming when all the private telcos are shifting towards 5G. This mistake must not be made by BSNL again.

With 5G, there are new streams of revenue possible. Thus, with an accelerated 4G launch, BSNL should also keep 5G in the books for 2023 itself. According to some officials, BSNL is, in fact, eyeing launching 5G networks in 2023, but the thing is, all words are empty promises until executed.

So, in simple words, while 4G will help BSNL with growing the business, it won't be enough to turn things around in the medium-to-long term. The state-run telco desperately needs to go after the 5G launch as well.

Nelco, Telesat Complete LEO Demonstrations in India for B2B Segment Successfully

Posted: 18 May 2022 12:30 AM PDT

Nelco

Nelco and Telesat have announced that they have together successfully completed their first in-orbit demonstration of high-speed broadband connectivity in India with Telesat's Phase 1 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. This is yet another big milestone for bringing next-generation satellite communication (satcom) technologies to the country.

The testing campaign was conducted from April 25 to April 29, 2022. It happened at the Nelco's Mahape teleport and leveraged an 85-cm Intellian parabolic antenna to connect to Telesat's Phase 1 LEO satellite.

Multiple Representatives from Enterprises and Government Departments Participated in the Tests

It is worth noting that there were over 50 representatives from enterprises, government departments, and telecom companies who participated in the live testing conducted by Telesat and Nelco. These representatives witnessed fibre-like, high-speed performance with 35ms roundtrip latency.

During the testing, the companies together demonstrated a wide range of cloud-based applications, which included real-time video conferencing over Microsoft Teams along with YouTube and Live TV video streaming.

The satcom industry has been growing at a rapid pace globally owing to the exponential growth in IP traffic demands and advancements in space-based technologies. With LEO satellites, connectivity from satellites will be revolutionised and bring transformational capabilities to enterprise, maritime, telecom, and aviation customers across all regions and terrains in the country.

Nelco, along with Telesat is planning to serve existing as well as new and upcoming market segments by enabling broadband connectivity for low latency applications with Telesat Lightspeed services.

For the unaware, the Telesat Lightspeed is an advanced, enterprise-class satellite network that leverages Telesat's innovative architecture and global Ka-band priority spectrum rights.

Satcom services via LEO satellites will enable internet connectivity in the remotest regions of the country. Other companies such as OneWeb and Starlink are also gearing up for the India launch of services. Jeff Bezos owned Amazon is also working to bring its Project Kuiper, which is also going to leverage LEO satellites for providing internet connectivity.

Mobile Internet Speeds Slightly Up in India, Fixed Broadband Speed Dips in April: Ookla

Posted: 17 May 2022 11:30 PM PDT

Broadband

Mobile internet speeds in India improved slightly in April 2022. At the same time, there was a noticeable dip in the speeds delivered by fixed broadband connections in the country, said Ookla. In the global ranking for providing median mobile speeds, India jumped two ranks to 118 from 120. As per Ookla, the median mobile download speeds improved from 13.67 Mbps in March 2022 to 14.19 Mbps in April 2022.

India went four spots down when it came to the median fixed broadband speeds in April 2022. From 72nd position, India's rank went down to 76th rank. Overall fixed median download speeds went down from 48.15 Mbps in March to 48.09 Mbps in April 2022.

UAE at the Top in Delivering Best Median Mobile Internet Speeds, Singapore at the top for Fixed Broadband

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was at the top when it came to delivering the best median mobile internet speed. In the median fixed broadband speed department, Singapore was at the top globally. Users in UAE got a median mobile internet speed of 134.48 Mbps, while users in Singapore got 207.61 Mbps median fixed broadband internet speed.

To make it to the top of the list, India needs to get a lot of things right. Starting with the policies that govern the telecom sector. For most of the last decade, the telecom sector was stressed and was performing with a load of debt on its shoulders. With 5G, the government and the sector regulator must see to aid the telecom sector in growing fast so that India can also make it to the top countries in delivering the best median speeds for both mobile and fixed broadband internet speeds.

Improvement in the median mobile internet speeds is certainly a positive for the Indian telecom sector and proves that the telcos' are making an impact with the additional spectrum they have deployed over the last year.
