| Samsung Apparently Plans to Slash 30% Smartphone Production in 2022 Posted: 28 May 2022 08:11 AM PDT
The South Korean tech giant Samsung has apparently taken the decision to slash its phone production by about 30% this year in light of the heightened crisis because of the pandemic. A new report has informed that Samsung will be cutting production of its low to mid-end devices as well as the flagship smartphones. The company was setting a target of 310 million units for the year 2022 which has now reportedly been brought down to 280 million units. The Adverse Effects of PandemicThe report comes in from SamMobile according to which Samsung had initially planned to manufacture more than 300 million units in the year, which is a number that hasn't been achieved since 2017. But the situation doesn't seem to be improving as the effects of the pandemic have worsened the global economy resulting in reduced demand and hence action was required to be taken. But Samsung isn't the only company that has chosen this path, as various other manufacturers had to cut their production as well because of the effects of the pandemic. To overcome the ongoing challenging environment, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple had to reduce its smartphone production for 2022 as well. Reports suggest that the company had reduced the production of its iPhone SE by 20%. Samsung Exiting Feature Phone MarketIn related news, Samsung is also reportedly planning to exit the feature phone market in India, which is low in price but high in volume. The company is planning to manufacture the last set of feature phones in the country with its contract manufacturing partner Dixon by this December. Reports have suggested that Samsung is looking to focus on smartphones that are priced at Rs 15,000 or above. Samsung has already spoken to its channel partners and notified them about exiting the feature phone market in the country by the end of 2022. This might also be because of the fact that the feature phone market is declining rapidly with newer age technologies coming at affordable rates to the market. Research suggests that feature phone shipment fell by 39% YoY in the first quarter of 2022. Moreover, the telecom operators are also encouraging the users in India to shift to smartphones capable of 4G and 5G connectivity. |

However, there's still some time before the Pixel 7 series makes its entrance into the market and announcements made by the company were just teasers. Details on Pixel 7 SeriesThe report comes in from 9to5Google which suggests that the upcoming Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will come featuring the same display specs as their previous iterations – Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The information was discovered by the publication through Android Open-Source Project where two new display drivers have been created by Google tagged as C10 and P10. It is being speculated that the tags are abbreviations for the codenames – Cheetah and Panther of Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The report further reveals that both the devices will arrive with the same Samsung-made display panels as the Pixel 6 series of smartphones and will have model numbers S6E3FC3 and S6E3HC3, respectively. This would mean that the Pixel 7 handset will come featuring a 1080×2400 display that is capable of running at up to 90Hz. However, the Pixel 7 Pro will exactly be the same as the Pixel 6 Pro from 2021 but will come with a native 1080p mode that will enable enhanced battery saving in Low Power Mode. Not much has been officially revealed by the company as of yet but it appears that the Google Pixel 7 series will arrive only with some minor improvements and upgrades over the last year's models. However, it's still five months before we officially get our hands on the devices and Google may surprise us. |

| Jio, Airtel and Vi to Now Get 1 Year Clearance from MoD for Laying Undersea Cables Posted: 28 May 2022 02:44 AM PDT
Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea will be happy with the recent move from the defence ministry for extending the clearance timeline for laying and maintenance of undersea cables from six months to one year. Up until now, the telcos had to seek clearance for vessels and ships every six months from the defence ministry. These vessels and ships are really important for the telcos to carry out their undersea activities, which include laying and maintaining cables. According to a TOI report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) sought for the MoD (Ministry of Defence) to push up the clearance timeline from the present six months to one year. A DoT circular recently released said that the MoD had granted initial and subsequent clearance of vessels and ships to one year or duration of the contract or period sought, whichever is less. This is definitely going to add to the ease of doing business for the telecom operators and save them crucial time in getting clearances every time. Note that the international-long distance services operators are required to take clearance from the MoD for vessels and ships and from the home ministry to involve human crew members to be involved in the process. The home ministry was already issuing the clearances for one year, and so this is a good step overall for the telecom sector. Telcos Have Received a Lot of Help from The Govt So FarThe telecom operators in India have received a lot of help from the government recently. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been looking after the telecom sector and its interests for the last year. The relief measures announced by the DoT brought major relief to the liquidity issues in the sector. Along with that, the relief package also made the telecom industry more investible for investors. |

| TRAI Will Check Whether Telcos Are Playing Clever Game of Differential Tariffs Posted: 27 May 2022 06:34 PM PDT
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is looking to conduct a special audit on the telcos in India to check whether they were offering differential tariffs through the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) route. Back in 2021, TRAI had released a directive which said that the telcos along with their channel partners can't make differential tariff offers for attracting customers through the MNP route. According to an ET report, the audit from TRAI would be focused on finding whether the telcos are engaging in discriminatory offerings which are against the rules around pricing. TRAI Has Sought Bids for Selecting AuditorsAs per the publication, the regulator has sought bids from its empanelled auditors who are involved in telco metering and billing by June 10, 2022. Following the bids, TRAI will select five auditors for going ahead with the process. An official aware of the matter told the publication that this audit will check how compliant the telcos have been with the September 2021 order on the prohibition of MNP-specific tariff orders. The aim of the move is to ensure that there is no malpractice or any undercutting with regard to MNP specific tariffs from the telcos. Further, the audit would oversee the kind of tariffs that the telcos offer through each of their platforms including the website, mobile app, channel partners and more. It is worth noting that the TRAI had issued this order in the first place because the telcos were continuously complaining about each other with respect to offering differential tariffs related to MNP for acquiring and retaining customers. TRAI had said that it is the responsibility of the telcos to oversee whether their channel partners or other platforms are indulging in malpractice with MNP specific tariffs to offer differential prices for getting an advantage over the competitors. This is because the telcos are licensed while its channel partners aren't and thus the telcos are only answerable for the developments. |
