Samsung Achieves Record High Smartphone Monthly Market Share in Five Years

Posted: 30 May 2022 04:12 AM PDT

Samsung

Samsung, the South Korean tech giant, in April achieved a record high monthly smartphone market share in five years. During the month of April, Samsung held nearly a quarter of the global smartphone market. The data has been shared by Counterpoint Research. This is the highest ever market share for the company in the last five years. Apart from Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi took second and third rank in the global smartphone market share.

Samsung Saw 9% Growth in Smartphone Sales YoY

As per Counterpoint, Samsung saw a 9% growth in its smartphone sales YoY despite the global smartphone sales dipping by 8% YoY. This shows the kind of trust and brand Samsung is running in the global market.

With these figures, it was the third consecutive month where Samsung was at the top of the list commanding the highest smartphone market share
globally. This is the highest ever figure for Samsung in a month since April 2017.

Even in Q1 2022, Samsung had achieved a record market share globally. Tarun Pathak, Research Director, Counterpoint Research, said that the growth for Samsung was driven by the strong performance of the Galaxy S22 series in the premium segment and the Galaxy A series in the mid-range segment.

Even in Q2 2022, Samsung is expected to retain the throne in the smartphone market share. Samsung is already the top brand when it comes to foldables. The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is arguably one of the best smartphone series on the market right now. In Androids, the Galaxy S22 series might have the best camera smartphones.

The Vivo X80 series could compete in the camera department, but Samsung has built a stronger trust amongst the masses in the premium gadgets segment. Apple and Xiaomi, who were in the second and third rank, were very much behind Samsung, and it is just the evidence of the love that users globally have for the brand.

Telegram Premium Subscription Development Surfaces Again

Posted: 30 May 2022 03:34 AM PDT

Telegram

One of the most popular texting and chatting applications globally, Telegram is reportedly planning on adding a premium subscription for the users. It is something which could be followed by other chatting apps as well. In the past, we have heard rumours about an alleged Premium tier subscription coming on Telegram. Now, a recognised developer, Alessandro Paluzzi, has revealed some information around the same.

Telegram Premium Subscription Details

It is worth noting that if you download the Telegram application right now, the application will greet you with the message – "Telegram is free forever. No ads. No subscription fees." However, looking at the recent developments, this could potentially turn out to be wrong.

Alessandro shared on his Twitter profile that Telegram is working on a new 'Telegram Premium' plan. This would enable users to unlock additional reactions and more. The developer also shared an image of what the Telegram Premium option would look like on the smartphone.

This could mean that the current reactions and the app features would still be free. But there might be other additional reactions for which users would have to pay to unlock. This is a business model that can be easily adopted by other social media texting applications such as WhatsApp and Signal.

However, it is worth noting that the reactions and stickers are heavily used on Telegram, but not Signal and WhatsApp. Thus, while the premium subscription model for some reactions and more could be followed by other platforms, it just might not be as successful.

Regardless, nothing is confirmed by Telegram itself for now. However, companies such as Telegram could not go on offering free services forever. These companies need a solid revenue model to keep the organisation going. WhatsApp could also bring a premium subscription with an ad-based model for the free version. There were heavy rumours that WhatsApp was working on introducing ads on WhatsApp Stories. It might just come true.

Vodafone Idea May Get Rs 20,000 Crore Investment from Amazon: Report

Posted: 30 May 2022 02:07 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country may get Rs 20,000 crore investment from Amazon. It is worth noting that a few days back, Ravinder Takkar had said that the company is very close to raising Rs 20,000 crore from an external investor. As per a report from The Ken, Vi might get this investment from the e-commerce giant Amazon.

This will be the first time Amazon would be entering the telecom sector in India. The company sells software solutions via Amazon Web Services to the telcos, but it hasn't been directly involved as an investor/owner in India's telecom sector.

Vodafone Idea the Only Telco Without Investment from a US Tech Giant

India's ruthless telecom sector has seen top US tech giants such as Google, Facebook and more investing in companies such as Jio and Airtel. At the moment, amongst the private telecom operators, Vodafone Idea is the only operator without investment from a US tech giant. At the same time, Amazon is the only major US tech company which doesn't have a telecom partner.

This could be an ideal scenario for both companies. Vi could do a lot of good with this investment (if it happens). The telco has a serious cash crunch despite the government's relief measures. For participating in the upcoming 5G spectrum auction in full capacity as well as raising capex spends, Vi needs external investors onboard desperately. The investment would enable the company to compete head-on with Jio and Airtel.

Note that TelecomTalk couldn't independently verify the report and neither of the companies mentioned above has made any such announcements. Regardless, the stock of Vodafone Idea (Vi) has jumped on the stock exchanges with the development.

Vi needs the investment as fast as possible. Thus, if something is actually cooking in the background, we will get to hear about it pretty soon. For now, take the development with a little grain of salt.

Jio

Reliance Jio, India's number one telecom operator, will be offering 4G network services in Kedarnath. There are hundreds of thousands of people who embark on the Kedarnath trek journey every year. The network service will be available between the Kedarnath Shrine and Gaurikund. According to a PTI report, the service was inaugurated by Ajendra Ajay, Chairman of Badrinath-Kedarnath Mandir Samiti.

Jio to Offer Superior Network Services to Devotees

Reliance Jio said that pilgrims on the Char Dham Yatra would get superior network services from Jio. Users will be able to make seamless voice calls
and video calls to stay connected with their loved ones.

Jio has installed a full capacity tower at Sonprayag, one of the key halt locations in the Kedarnath trek route. Further, the telco aims to install five more towers on the route between Gaurikund and the Kedarnath Shrine.

This will give Jio a competitive advantage over Airtel and Vi (Vodafone Idea). The pilgrims on their way to Kedarnath would want to have a Jio SIM inside their phones for superior network connectivity.

Jio also offers the most affordable plans among the private operators in the country. The company had recently brought new prepaid plans with three months of Disney+ Hotstar subscription. Users can be flexible with their demands and get prepaid plans according to their needs. There are data-heavy plans, data-only plans, talktime plans, OTT (over-the-top) plans and more.

Jio's 4G availability and network consistency have been rated the best in India by Opensignal. According to the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) report, Jio's 4G networks were the fastest in April 2022 when the download speeds were concerned. All of these factors make Jio a top choice for people travelling for the Kedarnath trek.

Apple iPhone 14 Series Likely to Feature Always On Display

Posted: 29 May 2022 10:08 PM PDT

Apple iPhone 14 Series

Apple's next flagship iPhone 14 series has been in rumours for quite some time now and one of the rumours suggests that we could witness the always-on display feature on iPhone 14 series. It is most likely that the company will feature the always-on display mode in its more expensive iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. Now the same rumour has been tipped by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman who suggests that Apple might roll this feature with its iOS 16 updates. Let's find out more.

How Will Always-On Display Work?

According to Gurman, the always-on display feature on iPhone 14 series will work the same way as it does in the company's Apple Watch Series 5 and higher models. To put it in simpler words, the Pro models in the iPhone 14 series will lower the frame rate of the screen when the always-on mode is enabled, allowing them to consume less battery. This is also the way the always-on display works on current Android smartphones.

Mark Gurman informed that the always-on display will arrive with the iOS 16 update which the company is expected to announce at its upcoming WWDC. He also stated that Apple could launch Pro models with more exclusive features which falls in line with a previous report suggesting that the company's A16 Bionic chipset will be installed in the Pro models of the iPhone 14 series.

It was reported last week that two models in the iPhone series – iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are going to be powered by the A16 bionic chips whereas the vanilla iPhone and iPhone 14 Max are going to be powered by an enhanced version of the A15 Bionic processors. The new A16 Bionic chip will also arrive with support for LPDDR5 RAM along with a new and improved CPU and GPU as well.

In related news, new renders of the iPhone 14 Pro emerged over the web revealing new colours of the device. iPhone 14 Pro will arrive in multiple colours like purple, silver, graphite, and gold. The iPhone 14 series is expected to come with four smartphones, namely iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Realme C30 New Specifications Surface Ahead of the Launch

Posted: 29 May 2022 09:22 PM PDT

Realme C30 Specs

The popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme is planning to introduce a new budget smartphone in India called Realme C30. Previous reports suggest that the smartphone will be launched in the country in the month of June. Now in the development of events, popular tipsters Mukul Sharma, as well as Paras Guglani, have provided new information related to the specifications of the upcoming Realme C30 smartphone. Let's find out.

Realme C30 Specification Details

According to tipster Mukul Sharma, Realme C30 is going to arrive in the country with a 6.58-inch display and a 5,000mAh battery that supports 10W charging. He further informs that the smartphone measures 8.48mm in thickness and weighs around 181 grams.

On the other hand, Guglani also revealed additional info on the display of the device stating that it will have a Full HD+ resolution on the display screen. The tipster further shared that the Realme C30 features an unspecified Unisoc chip. Talking about the camera specifications, Realme C30 is expected to feature a 13MP sensor on the back and a 5MP selfie camera on the front.

According to the report from Paras Guglani, the smartphone will be available in a blue colour option and will be priced somewhere around Rs 7000. This could mean that Realme C30 will be the most affordable option in the company's portfolio. Moreover, as it is understandable by the name, Realme C30 will be placed below Realme C31 which is also a budget device introduced in March of this year.

Apart from these newly revealed specifications, the fact came to the light that Realme C30 will be launched in India in two storage options. It will be available in 2 GB RAM + 32 GB storage and 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage options. The same leak also revealed that the smartphone will have Denim Black, Lake Blue, and Bamboo Green colour options.

The brand, however, is yet to reveal information regarding the Realme C30. We speculate that the smartphone will feature a 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel that offers an HD+ resolution and will most likely be powered by the Unisoc T612 chipset. The device will have a triple camera setup on the back and a massive 5000mAh battery unit.

Airtel Only Engaging With Huawei and ZTE for Maintenance Work

Posted: 29 May 2022 07:58 PM PDT

Bharti Airtel

The Indian telcos are following the rules laid down by the government very strictly. This is the reason they are not engaging with the Chinese telecom gear vendors anymore. Huawei and ZTE, two companies which have been the regular technology partners for the Indian telcos for decades, are now being ignored by the telcos due to security concerns.

A source told ET Telecom that Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in the country, is only engaging with Chinese companies for help with maintenance and replacement orders. But there are no more new contracts on offer for Huawei and ZTE now. This rules the Chinese vendors out of the 5G ecosystem of India.

Vodafone Idea Also Not Working With Chinese Vendors on New Projects Anymore

Ravinder Takkar, CEO of Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator, told ET last week that Vi has put its engagement on hold with the Chinese suppliers because of the government policies and issues.

Neither of the Chinese companies has been able to make it to the 'Trusted Vendors' list of the government. Rajesh Pant, India's national cybersecurity coordinator, told the publication that Huawei and ZTE have not yet completed paperwork for meeting the criteria of being a trusted vendor in the country.

The Indian government came down heavily on the Chinese network gear providers once border tensions with China increased in 2020. This has pushed the revenues and growth of European telecom gear vendors, including Ericsson and Nokia in India.

Nokia and Ericsson are going to get a large pie of India's 5G network equipment orders. Companies such as Samsung are also expected to be a part of India's 5G ecosystem, but on a relatively lesser scale as compared to Nokia and Ericsson.

Huawei and ZTE have been ousted from many major markets, not just India. Multiple European nations, Canada, the United States, and more have no plans of allowing Huawei and ZTE in their market for now.
