| 5G in India: Telcos Likely to be Unhappy Looking at DCC Standing Posted: 17 May 2022 08:19 PM PDT
The telecom operators are likely to be unhappy after hearing the stance of the Digital Communications Commission (DCC). The DCC, an inter-ministerial panel with the telecom secretary as its chairman, has backed the recommendations provided by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the upcoming 5G spectrum auctions. The body has said that airwaves in the 27.5 GHz to 28.5 GHz should be reserved for the satellite broadband service providers. In addition to this, the body has backed the spectrum allocation for 20 years instead of 30 years, reports ET Telecom. Cabinet Decision Will Finalise What Will HappenThe Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will now look for the approval of the Cabinet for the 5G spectrum recommendations. The Cabinet's call on things will finalise how the spectrum auctions will take place. Since DCC has backed the recommendations from the regulator, it is highly unlikely that the Cabinet has any problems with it either. The pricing recommendations from TRAI weren't satisfactory for the telecom players. In addition to this, the telecom operators are likely going to miss out on the spectrum in the 27.5 GHz to 28.5 GHz as it would be reserved for the satcom (satellite communications) players. The Cabinet's decision is likely to come within a week worth of time. Post that, the DoT will move fast toward releasing notice inviting applications (NIA) for the spectrum auction. The government is currently speeding things up so that the spectrum auction can take place as fast as possible to ensure a 5G call can be made by August 15, 2022. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) wants the authorities to expedite the process so that the 5G networks can be launched by August 15, an auspicious day for the country. The spectrum auction is most likely to happen in July or June at the earliest so that an August or September launch is possible. |

| Vodafone Idea Deployed Additional Spectrum for Boosting Indoor Coverage Posted: 17 May 2022 07:25 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi) customers living in Delhi will now get a faster and better overall 4G network experience. The telco has deployed an additional spectrum in the 1800 MHz and 900 MHz bands in the national capital, New Delhi. Over 8400 sites have received the support of additional spectrum to provide better network services to customers, Vi shared with TelecomTalk. The telco has leveraged Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology to optimise the 4G spectrum and offer better internet speeds. Vodafone Idea is claiming that the indoor network experience for consumers living in New Delhi will go up considerably after this. Areas such as airport road, Karol Bagh, Vasant Kunj, Cyber City, MG Road, Connaught Place, Faridabad Sector 16, 21, Delhi cant, Sarita Vihar, Vikas Marg, Noida City Centre, and more places will see better connectivity experience. Vodafone Idea Has Added Almost 700 Sites Since PandemicThe telco said that it has added almost 700 4G sites since the pandemic in Delhi and NCR. The telco further shared with TelecomTalk that it has nearly deployed nearly 2400 ma-MIMO installations and 2300 small cells in Delhi and NCR. Vi said that its users in the commercial and residential areas in the circle are experiencing enhanced data and voice experience even at the high population pockets. Vi has not been able to add new users to its overall customer base for a very long-time now. The telco has been often looked down upon because of its inferior network performance compared to Airtel and Jio. Vodafone Idea is changing things though and is trying to bring its users the best network experience in New Delhi. The telco is short of capital to raise current capex levels. In the future, hopefully, Vi can bring its customers superior network experience in all areas of the country. But for that to happen, the telco needs a steady cash flow and momentum for adding new users. |

| Airtel CEO Lists Three Reasons Why the Telco is Doing Great Posted: 17 May 2022 06:19 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel recently announced its quarterly profit was Rs 2,008 crore during Q4 FY22. The telco also reported an industry-leading average revenue per user (ARPU) figure of Rs 178. Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti Airtel, said that there are three reasons why Airtel is doing great and will continue to do so. Let's take a look at all of them. Bharti Airtel CEO Says These Three Reasons Helping the Company Stay Optimistic for FutureVittal said the ability of the company to consistently execute a simple strategy of winning with quality customers and delivering the best experience to them is the first reason Airtel is doing good. The second reason cited by the telco was its future-proofed business model with massive investments in both the infrastructure and digital capabilities. Lastly, it is Airtel's financial prudence backed by the strong governance focus that is keeping the company on track to success. Bharti Airtel reported its India revenues at Rs 22,500 crore for Q4 FY22, which is up 22.7% YoY. The telco's mobile revenues went up by 25.1% YoY on account of the average revenue per user (ARPU) increase led by the prepaid mobile tariff hike. Airtel said that it is an outcome of the company's unrelenting focus on winning quality customers by delivering a differentiated experience. The telco said that it rolled out 7,000 new towers during the quarter to improve the mobile network experience for the users. Airtel's capex in India for Q4 FY22 was Rs 4,277 crore. The healthy increase in ARPU should continue in the June 2022 quarter as the telco adds more high paying users and long-term recharge plan users recharge again with the new inflated tariffs. |
| Bharti Airtel ARPU Reaches Rs 178 on Account of Tariff Hikes Posted: 17 May 2022 04:44 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator, has just announced its financial results for Q4 FY22. The telco has reported an average revenue per user (ARPU) figure of Rs 178 during the quarter. Compared to the previous quarter's Rs 163, the jump to Rs 178 is a positive sign for the telco's short-term goal of reaching the Rs 200 ARPU level. In the coming quarters, it is very possible for Airtel to reach very close to the ARPU level of Rs 200. There was a 25.1% YoY jump in India’s mobile services revenues which was led by the ARPU growth. Airtel has benefitted from the tariff hikes as its consolidated net income has grown to Rs 2008 crore from Rs 759 crore a year back. Airtel 4G Customers Up by 21.5 Million YoYDespite the tariff hikes, Airtel managed to add new 4G subscribers during FY22. The telco said that its 4G users went up by 21.5 million YoY and 5.2 million QoQ. It is worth noting that Airtel's overall 4G subscriber count crossed 200 million figure, which is way more than Vodafone Idea's 118 million during the same time. Jio only has 4G subscribers, so its 4G user count is phenomenal compared to what Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have. Even the data consumption rate went up by 28.7% YoY to 18.8GB per month. Airtel Payments Bank, the fintech arm of Bharti Airtel, also performed great with an increase in monthly transacting users by 26% YoY, leading to expanding revenues and profit margin. For India, Airtel's capex spend during Q4 FY22 was Rs 4,277 crore. Bharti Airtel rolled out additional 7000 towers during the quarter to upgrade the network experience of its users across the nation. The company said that its Home business is also growing at a strong momentum with revenue growth of 45.8% YoY and customer net additions of 323,000 during the quarter to reach a total base of 4.5 million. Airtel Business also grew with strong momentum (12.9% YoY growth). The demand for enterprise services with 5G should help Airtel Business expand revenues and growth further. Airtel Digital TV had 17.6 million users at the end of March 31, 2022. The company continues to hold its leadership position in the DTH (Direct-to-Home) sector. |
