| OnePlus 10T Reportedly the Last Flagship for 2022 from OnePlus Posted: 01 Jun 2022 05:30 AM PDT
OnePlus fans have been eagerly waiting for some official developments around the rumoured OnePlus 10 Ultra which is expected to be the biggest and most powerful flagship from OnePlus yet. However, according to new development, OnePlus is going to launch the OnePlus 10T as its last flagship of the year. OnePlus 10T 5G Will Definitely be a SurpriseAfter last year, it would be surprising and sort of confusing to see OnePlus launching a 'T' branded smartphone. OnePlus had not launched a OnePlus 9T, instead launched OnePlus 9RT. It would be slightly confusing from the perspective of the brand's goals as to what it wants to do in the future. Regardless, Max Jambor, who goes by the username @MaxJmb on Twitter has shared the OnePlus 10T 5G would be the "next and only" flagship from OnePlus this year. This could come as a disappointment to some fans who wanted a smartphone with the Ultra branding. Note that the OnePlus 10T is most likely the rebranded OnePlus 10 Ultra. The smartphone could feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chipset with support for 150W fast-charging. The device could come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED FHD+ panel along with a 50MP primary camera on the back. Of course, this time as well, the camera system is expected to be fine-tuned by Hasselblad, the company's strategic camera partner. The device is likely to feature LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 internal storage. OnePlus is expected to launch multiple more devices later this year. One of the alleged and rumoured devices is the OnePlus Pad which could take after the Oppo Pad but with the power of OxygenOS for tablets. For OnePlus fans who were waiting for the Ultra model device might just have to wait longer as the company might not have any plans of launching an Ultra device for now. The OnePlus 10 Pro is already available in the market at a very premium price segment and thus it would be interesting to see what the OnePlus 10T 5G would look like. |
| Airtel Has Much Larger Brand Value Compared to Jio in 2022 Posted: 01 Jun 2022 04:02 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in the country, had a larger brand value than its arch-rival, Reliance Jio. In the telecom sector, only three private players remain in India and out of them, Airtel is at the top in brand value in 2022. Jio is in the second position, while Vi is in the third. According to a report published by Brand Finance, Airtel's brand value in 2022 stood at USD $7.7 billion, followed by Jio at USD $ 5.1 billion. Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telco in the country, had a brand value of USD $767 million. Airtel's ARPU is Higher than JioBharti Airtel's average revenue per user (ARPU) figure is higher than that of Jio. In Q4 FY22, the ARPU of Airtel was Rs 178, while Jio's ARPU was Rs 168. This means that Airtel is earning Rs 10 more than Jio out of each of its customers. Airtel also has a much better VLR subscriber percentage compared to Jio. This means that most of Airtel's customers are active, while the same is not the case for Jio. Jio Has a Much Larger Subscriber Base than AirtelJio's tariffs are slightly on the more affordable end of the scale compared to Airtel's. This helps the telco in attracting the masses. At the same time, Airtel wants to place its services and networks in the more premium category. Airtel wants consumers to look at its services as meant for people looking for something premium and for which they are ready to pay more. Airtel has never bothered to offer affordable services as it doesn't want to lose its market standing and branding. Vi's brand value is severely under USD $1 billion, which is not something that a lot of investors would be content about. Jio is also expected to go for an IPO (Initial Public Offer) in 2023, and the telco would want its brand value to grow as fast as possible so that it can get a solid start independently in the market. |
| Google to Ask Samsung for Making Second Gen Tensor SoC Posted: 01 Jun 2022 02:01 AM PDT
Google's Pixel smartphones started coming with the company's self-designed Tensor chipsets with the Pixel 6 series. With the Pixel 7 series, we will see the arrival of Tensor's second-generation chip. Google is going to get its chips made by Samsung only. The Pixel 7 series was already unveiled during this year's Google I/O event. With the Pixel 6 series as well, Google got the chipsets made from Samsung itself. Google Tensor Second Gen Will be Made on 4nm ProcessThe report from ddaily, a Korean publisher suggests that the Tensor's second-gen chip will be made on a 4nm process. The chip that comes with the Pixel 6 series is built on a 5nm process. Samsung will be reportedly using panel level package (PLP) technology for manufacturing the second-generation Google Tensor SoC. With this technology, the chips cut from a wafer are put on a rectangular panel which helps in reducing cost and improving productivity. The second-generation Tensor could sport the Samsung Exynos 5300 modem, but the details around this modem have not been revealed by the company yet. The Pixel 7 series will run on Android 13 out of the box and will be the first smartphone in the world to come running on the latest OS. Right now Android 13 is in the beta stages and a stable rollout by other companies will only start once Google finishes up its work on the Android OS. The Pixel 7 series look was unveiled by the company during the Google I/O 2022 event. The smartphone looks very much like the Pixel 6 series. It is worth noting that despite running on Tensor, Google's Pixel 6 series failed to impress in the benchmark scores. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 was much better than the Tensor in almost every department be it gaming, battery life, or CPU performance. It will be worth looking at how Google Tensor second-gen performs. |
| BSNL Seeks 70 MHz Spectrum for 5G from Govt: Report Posted: 01 Jun 2022 01:02 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has sought for 5G spectrum from the government. The state-run telco is yet to launch 4G networks but is already requesting 70 MHz of 5G spectrum from the government. According to a FinancialExpress report, PK Purwar, CMD of BSNL has written to the govt for reserving 70 MHz of airwaves in the 3300 MHz – 3670 MHz band for BSNL's 5G. Note that this is more than what the Digital Communications Commission (DCC) had recommended. As per DCC recommendations, govt needs to give BSNL 40 MHz of airwaves for 5G while the state-run telco is looking for 70 MHz. The DCC had also suggested that BSNL should get airwaves in the 600 MHz band as well as the 400 MHz in the mmWave bands. Cabinet's Call Will be Final for BSNLAccording to the publication's report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to put this request forward to the Cabinet which will then take the final call on what needs to happen. The Cabinet is still deliberating on the final decisions around the 5G spectrum auction that is supposed to happen later this summer. BSNL is still prepping for launching 4G networks across the nation. As per the CMD of the telco, a short-scale launch of 4G networks will take place by August 2022. But by December 2022, BSNL will launch its 4G networks in multiple parts of the country in a large-scale manner. If the government reserves the spectrum for BSNL, the state-run telco won't need to participate in the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. BSNL will only need to pay for the 5G spectrum at the auction set price when it wants to start offering 5G network services. The launch of 4G has been delayed by more than two years now, hopefully, that isn't the case with BSNL's 5G. BSNL is expected to launch 5G services in India by 2023. |
| Vi Launches Vi Ads, an AI/ML Based Ad-Tech Platform, to Help With Revenue Growth Posted: 31 May 2022 11:48 PM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, has rolled out an AI/ML-based ad-tech platform for capitalising on the multi-billion dollar advertising industry in India. The digital revolution in the country driven by cheap data has led to significant growth and innovation in the ad-tech industry. This has increased the volume of investments in the industry. Vi's ad-tech platform will be called "Vi Ads". It is focused on giving marketers a programmatic media buying platform that is cutting edge and ROI focused. Vi Ads to Allow Marketers to Engage With Telco's 243 Million SubscribersVi Ads will enable marketers to engage with the over 243 million subscribers that Vodafone Idea has. Marketers will be able to get the reach and access to multiple digital media platforms owned by Vi, including Vi Movies & TV app and Vi app, along with traditional channels such as IVR calls and SMS. A key differentiator for Vi Ads is that the platform will be media agnostic and empower the marketers in engaging with Vi users on external publishers and media channel partners of Vi Ads. With Vi Ads, marketers will have complete control over the campaigns that they are running through the self-serve interface of the platform. Marketers will be easily able to track campaign performance and access campaign insights. Vi Ads will cater to advertisers looking to generate leads, drive traffic, or drive sales. The platform offers marketers a combination of advanced features which are easy to execute and will attract large agencies and SMEs in the country. The digital AdEx has grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 27% in the last decade. With Vi Ads, Vodafone Idea is trying to tap into additional revenues. Avneesh Khosla, CMO, Vi, said that Vi Ads will address two of the biggest challenges for marketers today, which are getting access to authentic insights and enhanced reach. |
| Vi Top Official Suggests Allocating Unsold Spectrum at Market Discovered Price Posted: 31 May 2022 10:03 PM PDT
Due to the spectrum being very expensive in India, multiple times now, certain frequency bands have been ignored by the telcos during the auctions. Ravinder Takkar, talking to TOI, suggested that the government should allocate the unsold spectrum to the players at the market discovered price. This will help the companies with their plans of scaling networks throughout the country to meet the growing demand for digital consumption. Takkar cleared that this is merely a suggestion and not something that Vi or he is advocating for. This is an option for the government to also boost its revenues as the telcos might be ready to pay market discovered prices for the unsold spectrum. Takkar Says It Is a Myth that Vi is Being Kept AliveWhen asked whether the revival of the telco is led only because of the revival package announced by the government, Takkar said that it is a myth that Vi is being kept alive. The Vi CEO added that there have been many ups and downs in the last few years and there is no doubt that the telco would come out stronger from here. Vi has been unable to raise any funds from external investors for years now. The board of the telco had approved a fundraise of up to Rs 25,000 crore through both debt and equity in 2020 but apart from the Rs 4,500 crore which came from the promoters, the telco has not been able to raise any funds. Vi is waiting for the government to pick up its equity stake in the company. The GoI (Government of India) will be picking up a 33% stake in the company against the Rs 16,000 crore-interest dues that the telco owed. This is the only roadblock left to be addressed before the telco can raise funds from external investors. Vi is very close to raising Rs 20,000 crore from outside investors, Takkar had said previously. |
| Vodafone Idea CEO Says Industry ARPU Should Have been Rs 350 – Rs 400 Today Posted: 31 May 2022 08:39 PM PDT
Ravinder Takkar, CEO, Vodafone Idea (Vi), said recently that the industry average revenue per user (ARPU) should have been Rs 350-400 today as it was Rs 200-205 in 2016. According to Takkar, the wallet spending of consumers has shrunk about Rs 150, which is 50% to 60% lower than what it would have been in 2016. Vodafone Idea will not hesitate in raising tariffs, said Takkar. The telco believes that in the next five years, the industry ARPU can rise significantly. Vi's ARPU goals echo the same figures as Airtel's. Vodafone Idea wants to reach Rs 200 levels in the short-term, then progress to Rs 250 and then to Rs 300 in the long-run, said Takkar as per a Livemint report. As of today, Vi's ARPU stands at Rs 124, which is far behind Airtel and Vi Will be Happy to Lead Another Round of Tariff HikesTakkar said that he is always willing to raise the tariffs and will be happy to lead another round of tariff hikes if it is the right thing for the business. Another round of tariff hikes is definitely going to come during the second half of 2022. Vodafone Idea got an investment of Rs 4,500 crore from the promoters. Takkar said that it is very helpful for the company and sets the ball rolling for other investors to come in. The telco quashed the rumours of getting a Rs 20,000 crore investment from Amazon. In a clarification to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Vi said that it had received no proposals from Amazon for any sort of investment. The telco's CEO had earlier said that they are very close to raising Rs 20,000 crore, but it won't happen until the time the government's equity conversion process is completed. For the unaware, GoI (Government of India) will pick up an equity stake in Vi very soon against a part of the liabilities that the telco owes the centre. |

| Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Most Shipped Premium Device in India in March 2022 Posted: 31 May 2022 08:38 AM PDT
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has been the talk of the town since it launched. The essentially Note like the smartphone has received a strong response in the global as well as Indian market. Now, according to a report from the Hindustan Times, the Samsung devices had 81% of the Indian smartphone market share when it came to devices priced above Rs 1,00,000. Well, it would also make sense. Above Rs 1,00,000, users in India only have two great options – iPhone 13 Pro devices and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The camera reviews out on the internet suggest that Galaxy S22 Ultra clearly has the upper hand over the iPhone 13 Pro series. In addition to that, Samsung's Galaxy S22 Ultra is more affordable as well. Further, to make the deal sweeter for Indians, Samsung is only shipping the Galaxy S22 Ultra with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 in India. Indians mostly wanted to avoid Exynos powered devices, and Samsung heard and got positive results. Out of the total Samsung devices shipped during March 2022, the Galaxy S22 Ultra accounted for 74% of the shipments. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Price in IndiaThe smartphone is available in three storage in India currently. The base model comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage for Rs 1,09,999. | Vodafone Idea Confirms No Proposal from Amazon for Investment Yet Posted: 31 May 2022 06:24 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, has confirmed that Amazon, a US-based e-commerce giant, has made no proposals for buying a stake or investing in the company in any manner. The company was giving clarification to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) about the news which surfaced saying that Amazon is likely to invest Rs 20,000 crore into the telco. Vodafone Idea on Amazon's Proposals for Investing Rs 20,000 CroreVi said that its board of directors had met on September 4, 2020, and approved a fundraise of up to Rs 25,000 crore, the intimation of which was already filed with the stock exchanges on the same date. The company further said that it continues to explore various opportunities and options for raising funds within the authorisations given by the board. Whenever fundraising proposals are considered by the board of directors, Vi always complies with the disclosure obligations under the SEBI. However, it is worth noting that Ravinder Takkar, CEO of Vodafone Idea, had said that the telco is very close to raising Rs 20,000 crore. The investment (if any) would likely only come when the equity conversion process for the government is completed. SEBI had exempted the GoI (Government of India) from making an open offer to the Vi shareholders. The regulator had said that GoI is not going to be a part of the decision-making process and will be completely silent in its role in the company. The government is only taking equity against the dues that Vi owes and isn't looking to convert the company into a PSU (public sector unit). One thing is for sure if Vi wants to survive, the telco needs to find an investor and make increase capex levels to what Jio and Airtel are spending. |

| Vodafone Idea Revenues to Grow Significantly Like Airtel, Jio Posted: 31 May 2022 03:52 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea's (Vi) revenues are likely to grow by 20% to 25% in fiscal 2023. As per CRISIL, the other two private telcos are going to see their revenues going up by the same margin. The growth in revenues will be there because of the rise of tariffs in 2021. CRISIL said that due to the full-year impact of tariff hikes, the ARPU (average revenue per user) figure of all the private telcos should go up by 15% to 20%. However, the growth would be partially offset because of the downtrading of recharges, said CRISIL. Vodafone Idea Lost Leadership in Five CirclesCRISIL said that because of losing subscribers for consecutive quarters, the telco lost leadership in over five circles. Regardless, because of the tariff hikes, the overall revenues for the telcos are going to go up. According to CRISIL, the EBITDA for the telcos in fiscal 2023 would expand by 180-220 bps this fiscal. The tele-density in the country is going to grow. This means more wireless service consumers will be available in the market for the telcos to add to their subscriber base. Vi could benefit from this as the revenues will go up. After the tariff hikes, SIM consolidation took place in the telecom sector, which saw over private telcos losing about 37 million users. However, the active subscriber base of the telcos grew steadily by 29 million. This will help the telcos in achieving a better ARPU figure in the short term. In the second half of fiscal 2023, the telecom players are expected to raise prepaid mobile tariffs again. This will further boost the revenues of the telcos and improve their ARPU. However, there would be downtrading of recharges at a much higher level after the prepaid tariff hike expected to come later in the year. So some of the gains will be offset because of that. |

The satcom market in India is a huge untapped opportunity for global players. Companies such as OneWeb and Starlink have already shown deep interest in doing business in India. OneWeb has already secured a license from the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) as well. Starlink is still struggling to expand its business to India due to regulatory challenges. The SpaceX owned satcom company had to refund all the money it took from the users in India as pre-booking costs for a Starlink kit. |
