Viacom18 Bags Three Big Wins Related to IPL

Posted: 15 Jun 2022 11:08 AM PDT

IPL

Viacom18 has bagged three big wins related to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The entity is a joint venture between Network18, owned by RIL (Reliance Industries Limited – 51% stake) and Paramount Global (49% stake). Viacom18 was the highest bidder for digitally streaming IPL matches in the Indian subcontinent for seasons from 2023 to 2027. In addition to this, Viacom18 has won Indian digital rights for a special package of 18 games every season.

This is not all. Viacom18 has further won the digital rights as well as television rights of streaming the IPL games in three out of five international territories, which includes major cricketing nations. Viacom18 has been investing heavily into getting the rights to streaming sports events. The company has already bagged the rights for soccer (La Liga, FIFA World Cup, Serie A and Ligue1), basketball (NBA), tennis and badminton. This is the first time Viacom18 is stepping into the world of cricket.

IPL is arguably the best way to go about it for Viacom18 when cricket is concerned, as the league attracts billions of eyeballs globally. This will be an opportunity for the company to reach a younger audience which is highly engaged in watching IPL matches.

Viacom18's Strategic Partnership With Jio Will be a Booster for RIL

RIL owns the largest telecom operator in the country – Reliance Jio. Jio is one of the biggest sponsors of the IPL. RIL also owns Mumbai Indians, the most successful cricketing franchise in IPL’s history. The crossovers that RIL can play with Viacom18 and Jio are just unparalleled.

In India, Viacom18 will pay Rs 50 crore per match for streaming the match digitally. For the special rights package, the company will be paying Rs 33.24 crore per match. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going to mint the kind of money that no other cricketing event in the world does by selling streaming rights.

Viacom18 has also got the rights to stream IPL digitally and through television in the following international countries:

Grouping A) – Australia, NZ, Singapore and Caribbean for Rs 0.30 crore per match.

Grouping B) – South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa for Rs 0.65 crore per match.

Grouping C) – UK, Ireland, and Continental Europe for Rs 0.50 crore per match.

Ericsson and Malaysia’s DNB Demonstrate HD VoNR 5G Call Using Oppo Find X3 Pro

Posted: 15 Jun 2022 09:08 AM PDT

Ericsson 5G

Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) is the only telecom body that is allowed to offer 5G network services in Malaysia. What's interesting here is that DNB is a Malaysian government-owned body. Ericsson, a major European telecom gear vendor, partnered with DNB to demonstrate the 5G Voice over New Radio (VoNR) call for the first time in Malaysia. This milestone is an achievement that DNB's 5G network can support both NSA (non-standalone) and SA (standalone) architectures.

VoNR 5G call demonstrated utilised 5G SA architecture for offering a high-definition, audio-video experience because of ultra-fast 5G speeds throughout the duration of the call. MNOs with ready 5G cores can leverage VoNR to generate new revenue opportunities. Oppo Find X3 Pro devices were used during the test by Ericsson and DNB.

While many countries have already shifted to 5G networks, it is mostly for the data. VoNR 5G calls are still a very alien concept for users across the world. There are not even many devices which can support 5G VoNR. This is a major breakthrough for both Ericsson and DNB.

Ericsson Working With Telcos Globally for 5G

Ericsson is also working with many Indian telecom operators on their 5G networks and can potentially help them in rolling out 5G VoNR calling services as well. With 5G, the capacity for voice calling and data usage would go up significantly because of denser network infrastructure and higher frequencies in play which would be able to carry data faster. The Oppo Find X3 Pro is also a good device to invest in if you want to use the 5G VoNR calling service over the SA architecture network.

Apple Rumoured to be Working on Entry Level iPad

Posted: 15 Jun 2022 06:09 AM PDT

Apple

According to reports, Apple is working on a new entry-level iPad with the A14 Bionic SoC, 5G connectivity, and a USB Type-C connection. Not only that, Apple is expected to refresh the iPad Pro lineup with M2 CPUs, wireless charging, and camera system updates in September or October, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Also, the Cupertino-based company is expected to release at least one tablet with a 14.1-inch display and 16GB of storage. Let's take a closer look at the latest iPad features from Apple.

Specifications and Features of the Apple iPad (rumoured)

According to the publication's sources, the "next entry-level iPad will come with a Retina display of the same resolution as the iPad Air's display," but it could be 10.5-inch or even 10.9-inch in size, rather than the present model's 10.2-inch LCD. Furthermore, Apple's A14 Bionic CPU, which also powers the 4th-generation iPad Air, is expected to be used in the rumoured iPad. According to the source, the iPad may also undergo a design modification as a result of changes in display technology and the launch of the USB Type-C connection.

Apple is anticipated to make significant enhancements to its most cheap iPad, 9to5mac reports. This 10th-generation iPad, codenamed J272, is reported to have a USB Type-C port rather than a Lightning port. As a result, all Apple iPad models are expected to adopt the USB Type-C connection. The connector was included in the iPad Pro in 2018, the iPad Air in 2020, and the iPad mini in 2021. The iPad will also be able to connect to current external screens, such as Apple's Studio display, thanks to the USB Type-C port.

The company's A14 Bionic SoC, 5G connectivity, and USB Type-C connection will be included in the new entry-level iPad. The rumoured tablet is also supposed to have a bigger display and be equipped with cutting-edge technology. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple could release the new iPad Pro in September or October. Also, these next iPad Pro versions will include M2 chips, wireless charging, and camera system enhancements.

Telecom Industry ARPU to Rise to 170 by FY23 End, Debt Levels to Go Up as Well

Posted: 15 Jun 2022 04:20 AM PDT

Telecom

The Indian telecom industry has been in a constant state of survival since Jio has come to the market. The debt levels have been soaring because of liquidity issues that Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have faced in the past. But since 2021, things have started becoming good for the telecom industry and signs of recovery are there. The improvements can be credited to the higher demand for digital services as well as the government announcing relief measures for the telcos.

ICRA believes that the average revenue per user (ARPU) of the telecom industry (excluding BSNL) will touch Rs 170 by the end of FY23. The ARPU growth will be driven by the rise in tariffs.

However, the debt level of the industry would go up significantly because of the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced the date of the spectrum – July 26, 2022.

Upfront Payment Likely to be Low

The good thing is that the telcos will have to make the first instalment (the owed amount can be paid in up to 20 instalments) payment within 10 days of the price announcement. But this won't be too high for the telcos and the fact that they don't have to also provide bank guarantees is a good move.

There won't be any major liquidity issues as such to the telcos. ICRA said that regardless of the less upfront payment, the deferred spectrum liabilities of the telcos would increase which in turn would increase the total debt levels of the companies and the industry.

ICRA noted that debt continues to be one of the vulnerable points for the country. Telcos such as Airtel and Jio which have been able to generate free cash flows have been trying to deleverage as fast as possible. Vodafone Idea is also looking for a fundraiser to ease out liquidity concerns.

Jio, Airtel, Vi Customers Might Shy Away from Disney+ Hotstar Plans Now

Posted: 15 Jun 2022 02:13 AM PDT

Jio, Airtel, Vi

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) all brought multiple Disney+ Hotstar prepaid plans for the users in early 2022. This was because of the demand that the IPL (Indian Premier League) creates for the platform. None of the other platforms has been focused this much by the telcos. But now, Disney+ Hotstar won't be streaming IPL anymore. The company didn't win the bid for the cricket league's streaming rights. Reliance Industries Limited and Paramount Global-owned Viacom 18 has won the digital streaming rights for IPL for the next five years (2023 – 2027).

This might push away Jio, Airtel, and Vi customers from getting prepaid plans with Disney+ Hotstar Mobile subscriptions. While Disney+ Hotstar is still the home to all the Marvel movies and TV shows, it just might not be enough to pull in the cricket fanatics who were taking Disney+ Hotstar bundled plans because they allowed them to watch IPL.

Does this mean that the telcos might get rid of these plans? Well, nothing can be said right now. It all depends on the kind of response that these plans get in the coming months.

Will Disney+ Hotstar Market in India Go Down?

It very well could be because of missing out on IPL streaming rights. But, there are still a lot of popular titles released on the platform every year which might retain the interest of the consumers.

According to a Bloomberg report, Vivek Couto, Executive Director of Media Partners Asia, Disney+ Hotstar could lose up to 20 million subscribers in the country after being outbid for the streaming rights of the IPL.

Hundreds of millions of users tuned in every year to watch the IPL online through Disney+ Hotstar until now. The telcos might bring in new prepaid plans in partnership with the platform which is going to stream the future seasons of the IPL.

DoT Issues NIA: Check Date for Indian 5G Spectrum Auction and Other Details

Posted: 15 Jun 2022 12:49 AM PDT

5G

After receiving a nod from the Union Cabinet, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Wednesday issued Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) for the 5G spectrum auction 2022. The government will put the following spectrum bands for auctions – 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 300 MHz, and 26 GHz.

The last date for submitting applications for the spectrum auction is July 8, 2022. DoT will declare the final list of bidders on July 20, followed by a Mock Auction on July 22 and July 23. The official 5G spectrum auction will kick off on July 26, 2022.

Here are the other key details surrounding the 5G spectrum auction 2022.

Spectrum Usage Charges and Bank Guarantee Requirements

The government has said that there will be zero SUC (Spectrum Usage Charges) for the airwaves acquired in the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. There will be no bank guarantee required either. In addition to this, the telcos can make the payment for spectrum in 20 equal annual instalments, which are to be paid in advance at the beginning of each year. The first instalment will have to be paid within ten days of the declaration of the final price.

Bidders/telcos will be given the flexibility of surrendering the airwaves after ten years with no future liabilities with respect to the balance instalments. The spectrum will be given to the telcos for 20 years.

The government has decided to provisionally allot two carriers of 250 MHz each in E-band to the telecom service providers (TSPs). The number of traditional microwave backhaul carriers in the existing frequency bands of 13 GHz, 15 GHz, 18 GHz, and 21 GHz bands are also doubled.
Enterprises Can Obtain Airwaves Directly from Govt for Captive Private 5G Networks

The government has said that the enterprises can directly obtain airwaves from the DoT for building their captive private 5G networks. This is a big blow to the telcos, which didn't want this to happen. In addition to this, the enterprises can also lease the spectrum from the telcos or ask them to set up a private 5G network.

ACT Incredible Broadband Plan Comes With 400 Mbps Speed

Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:52 PM PDT

ACT Fiber

ACT Fibernet, a leading internet service provider (ISP) in many states of India, offers super-high-speed broadband plans to users. You can get up to 1 Gbps internet speed plans from ACT. The only thing is, the company is not available in every part of the country. There are only select cities where ACT offers its services. One of them is Bengaluru. In this mega city of India, ACT offers users an 'Incredible' broadband plan which comes with up to 400 Mbps of speed. Let's see what the details of this plan are.

ACT Fibernet Incredible Plan With 400 Mbps Speed Details

ACT Fibernet offers its 400 Mbps plan for Rs 1,999 in Bengaluru. Note that the price mentioned here doesn't include taxes. The company says that it offers unlimited data with the plan, but people who are aware of how a broadband business is run in India will know that there's a FUP (fair-usage-policy) limit on the monthly data. Users will get up to 3300GB or 3.3TB of high-speed data every month, after which the speed would reduce drastically to 2 Mbps.

But even 3300GB is more than sufficient for any household. This plan also comes with additional benefits, including ACT Stream TV 4K for Rs 200 per month, ZEE5 Premium subscription at Rs 449 per year, Hungama at Rs 99 per month, SonyLIV at Rs 299 per month, Aha at Rs 349 per year, ACT Shield at Rs 1999 and more.

If you want a slightly more affordable broadband plan with the same terms and conditions, you can go for the Rs 1425 per month plan from ACT which offers 350 Mbps of speed to the users. This plan also comes with unlimited data (3.3TB per month). The additional benefits included with this one are the same as well.

Note that these plans might not be available in other cities because ACT doesn't offer uniform plans in each circle it offers services.

WhatsApp Owner Zuckerberg Has Likely Made Millions of Users Happy

Posted: 14 Jun 2022 09:29 PM PDT

WhatsApp

One of the big reasons why users fear purchasing an iPhone while using Android is the fear of losing all WhatsApp data. iPhones collect their WhatsApp backup data in iCloud while the Android devices leverage Google Drive. This is the reason why when Android users shift to iPhones, they lose all their data of WhatsApp. But now, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and owner of Meta known for founding Facebook has announced that WhatsApp is getting the ability to securely switch between phones and transfer the chat history of users between Android and iPhone. All of this will be done while maintaining end-to-end encryption.

It is a highly requested feature that might result in a boost in iPhone sales. Last year, Meta-owned WhatsApp launched iPhone to Android data transfer, but now, Android to iPhone data transfer is also here.

How to Transfer WhatsApp Chat Data from Android to iPhone (Latest Details and Steps)

If you are thinking of transferring the WhatsApp chat data from Android to iPhone, here are a few pointers you must note (shared by WABetaInfo).

Step 1: Ensure that both the iOS and the Android running devices are connected to a power source because the transfer can take some time.

Step 2: The iPhone you are transferring the data to should be an all-new device or just factory reset it.

Step 3: Open the Move to iOS app on the Android device and follow what the application is saying.

Step 4: Enter the code that's on your iOS device. Don't forget to select WhatsApp right within the Transfer Data Screen.

Step 5: Tap start on the Android device and don't do anything else until the data transfer is completed. Your Android device will sign you out once the data migration is complete.

Step 6: Continue with the iPhone and wait for the Move to iOS for completing the process.

Step 7: Use the same number for signing into WhatsApp on the iPhone. Once you are logged in, you will find all your data.

5G Spectrum Auction Approved by Cabinet

Posted: 14 Jun 2022 08:38 PM PDT

5G

India's soon going to see a 5G spectrum auction. The Cabinet has finally given the nod for it. There's no official announcement yet, but the sources tell BusinessToday that the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved spectrum pricing for the 5G auction on Tuesday. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will immediately start working on releasing Notice Inviting Applications (NIA).

Once the DoT has released NIA, it takes at least eight weeks or close to two months for the spectrum auction to begin. Considering that, it would be safe to assume that India's not getting the commercial 5G network before or by August 15, 2022. The Union Cabinet has gone ahead with the pricing recommendation for spectrum provided by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

This means that the telcos will have no other option than to spend heavy money in the spectrum auction if they want the airwaves or just participate in a mild manner.

Airtel Had Said it Won't Participate Heavily If Pricing is Not Good

Bharti Airtel had earlier said that it would just leverage the 4G airwaves it has for 5G and not participate in the 5G spectrum auction heavily if the pricing of the spectrum is not decent. This is something that every other private telecom operator can do as well.

Right now, the major thing that's bugging the telcos is the matter of private 5G networks. The Communication Ministry has reportedly supported the idea of allocating airwaves directly to the enterprises for rolling out captive private 5G.

This is going to be a major revenue loss for the telcos and something that might push them away from the idea of heavily investing in 5G. Every telco is banking on making incremental revenues from 5G via enterprise services. Consumer-related network services can be fulfilled by 4G itself. 5G is something that's going to benefit enterprises more.

Vodafone Idea Every 1.5GB Daily Data Prepaid Plan

Posted: 14 Jun 2022 06:30 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea is slightly behind in overall network performance compared to its competitors. However, if you look at the prepaid plans offered by the company, they are truly exceptional. The additional benefits which Vi offers with its prepaid plans are not offered by any other telecom operator in the country. Today, we will be focusing on all the plans offered by the company, which come with 1.5GB of daily data. Let's take a look at them one by one.

Vi Rs 299 Plan

The Rs 299 plan offers users 1.5GB of daily data with unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. Users get access to Vi Hero Unlimited benefits which include Weekend Data Rollover, Binge All Night, and Data Delight. There's also Vi Movies & TV Classic bundled with the plan. This plan comes with a total validity of 28 days.

Vi Rs 479 Plan

The Rs 479 plan from Vi is the same as the Rs 299 plan but comes with a longer validity of 56 days. The additional benefits between both the plans are completely identical. The same plan is also available for 77 days for Rs 666. At this price, Jio offers its 1.5GB daily data plan for 84 days. In case you want the 84 days plan with 1.5GB of daily data from Vi, you will have to pay Rs 719. Like with all the plans, the Rs 666 and Rs 719 plans from Vi also come with the same additional benefits as the Rs 299 plan.

For Rs 599, Vi is offering the same plan for 70 days. The company's strategy is a little unclear as it is offering the same plan for 70 days, 77 days, and 84 days.

However, if you are someone who is just interested in the super-long-term plan, you can go for the Rs 2899 plan offered by Vi. With this plan, users get 1.5GB of daily data for 365 days. These are all the plans offered by Vi with 1.5GB of daily data.

Prepaid Plans Become More Expensive While Recharging With Paytm

Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:42 AM PDT

Prepaid TV

Paytm, a nationwide renowned payments app, is now charging a convenience fee from the users when they recharge with any prepaid plan from its platform. A convenience fee means that the total cost of the plan would increase. The company will be charging a convenience fee only with the prepaid plans that cost Rs 100 or more. Further, the recharges for which the users are paying through online methods such as UPI and debit or credit card would attract a convenience fee.

According to a Gadgets360 report, the convenience fee had started coming for select Paytm users in March 2022. But now, the platform seems to be charging it from more users. Let's take a look at the details around the additional cost that the users will have to bear.

Paytm Will Charge Up to This Amount as Convenience Fee for Mobile Recharges

Paytm will charge users between Rs 1 to Rs 6 for mobile recharges through its platform. The amount would depend on the kind of recharge plan that the user is going for. It isn't a very big amount but certainly something that might irk users because, in most of the other platforms, there's no convenience fee on recharges.

Users can directly also recharge from the mobile apps or websites of the telcos instead of paying a convenience fee for every recharge they do using Paytm. The cost of prepaid plans has already gone up in India and is expected to go up further. Thus users would like to keep the cost of mobile services in check.

This could be a potential revenue earner for Paytm; however, it can also result in a blowback for the company. Paytm has been struggling in the stock market since listing and has already lost thousands of crores in market cap. The company is desperately trying to improve performance and reach a stable position.

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea has just announced that it is bringing SonyLIV Premium add-on data pack for postpaid users as well. It is worth noting that the telco already offers a SonyLIV Premium bundled 4G data pack to prepaid users. But now, even the postpaid users will get the option to purchase such a data pack for a nominal cost of Rs 100. Let's take a look at the add-on 4G data pack that has been announced by Vi in detail.

Vodafone Idea Rs 100 Add-on 4G Data Pack for Postpaid Users Details

If you are a Vi postpaid user and you want additional high-speed data on your postpaid plan with an OTT (Over-The-Top) benefit, you can go for the newly launched Rs 100 add-on 4G data pack. With this plan, the company is going to offer users 10GB of data. The price of the plan includes taxes which means each GB of data will cost users Rs 10.

But along with this, users will also get free access to SonyLIV Premium for 30 days. The amount will be added to the user's postpaid bill generated at the end of the billing cycle.

Since it is a SonyLIV Premium subscription, users will be able to stream many exciting TV shows such as The Kapil Sharma Show, watch live cricket, and amazing titles such as Scam 1992 – The Harshad Mehta Story and more.

This expands the partnership that Vi has with SonyLIV. Note that only Vi's plans offer a free benefit of SonyLIV. None of the other telcos bundles this particular OTT benefit with their mobile plans. Getting monthly access to SonyLIV from here is a much better option than paying Rs 299 separately to get it in a standalone manner. For six months and twelve months, users have to pay Rs 699 and Rs 999, respectively. If you want to watch a particular show, the 4G data packs from Vi are your best options for getting cheap access to SonyLIV Premium.

Airtel Xstream

Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in the country announced that it is bringing the content of Xstream OTT (over-the-top) content platform in Metaverse for the users. The company has launched Xstream Multiplex in the Partynite Metaverse platform. This will be a 20-screen multiplex platform which will offer users access to content from several OTT companies available on the application.

With this multiplex, users can get a taste of the content they are interested in seeing. Users can sample top original shows, movies, first episodes of popular OTT shows, and more. For watching the complete content, users will have to get a paid subscription plan from the company.

Xstream Multiplex Sounds Very Exciting

This is the first time any Indian telco has jumped in so heavily in the metaverse. Users will be allowed to interact on the Partynite Metaverse where the Xstream Multiplex is hosted. Gamitronics, the creator of Partynite had worked with Airtel to bring this idea to life.

Shashwat Sharma, Director – Marketing, Airtel said the Xstream Multiplex will offer users a larger-than-life experience bringing together Web 3.0 applications and immersive storytelling. With this metaverse, Airtel is trying to tap into a larger audience and also driving people to try out the Airtel Xstream OTT platform.

It is worth noting that Airtel Xstream has crossed the milestone of 2 million paid subscribers. The development was shared by Adarsh Nair, CEO of Airtel Digital to PTI. The company aims to have over 20 million paid subscribers for Xstream which would then create a separate major source of revenue for the company.

Integrating the OTT platform in the metaverse is a brilliant move by the company. It will put a lot of limelight towards the Xstream platform across the nation and might help Airtel in adding new paid subscribers. Airtel Xstream is a platform through which users can watch OTT content from different platforms under a single login.
