| ColorOS 13 Public Beta Expected to Come Early in August Posted: 20 Jun 2022 08:46 AM PDT
Digital Chat Station, a digital blogger, shared a screenshot of a new ColorOS 13 x Android 13 interface today. A lot of enhancements are included in the new UI. ColorOS 13 permits the creation of enormous nine-square-grid folders, according to the screenshots, and you may access the programme with a single click. Furthermore, ColorOS 13 supports more widgets that may be pinned to the home screen. Oppo held a developer conference in China a few weeks ago to reveal details about the impending ColorOS 13 based on Android 13. Let's take a closer look at the new software upgrade. More about the ColorOS 13A few hours ago, Digital Chat Station released two Weibo posts about the ColorOS 13. The one with the screenshots has been taken down; however, the one with the beta timeline details is still up and running. Fortunately, Chinese media outlets such as ITHome reported on the leak before the photographs were removed. ColorOs 13 will improve folders and widgets, according to screenshots. On the home screen, users will be able to enlarge the folder size. This allows you to open apps fast by tapping their icons from outside the folder. The upcoming software update's system UX design is more hydrogen OS-like, and OnePlus owners should recognise some of the characteristics. According to blogger Digital Chat Station, the ColorOS 13 internal test system has substantially higher background retention rather than the previous version. ColorOS 13 will be released as public data in early August. To avoid disrupting the use of public beta users, developers must complete the adaption and release before this. Previously, digital blogger @DigitalChatStation shared a screenshot of what he claimed to be ColorOS x Android 13 and stated that it is currently only the setting interface UI that has been fine-tuned, and the new underlying features include better privacy protection, animation smoothness, application flow, among other things. |

For a business, it is all about how well you can drive customer engagement. | Telecom Sector Reforms 2.0 to be Introduced Soon Posted: 20 Jun 2022 04:10 AM PDT
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had last year worked its magic for the Indian telecom sector and announced multiple relief measures. These measures had addressed the liquidity concerns mostly. Telcos were given the opportunity to opt for a moratorium of spectrum payments for up to four years. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea both opted for it. The DoT has also been working on the second set of reforms for the sector that will look to ease the way telcos do business. According to a PTI report, a committee formed by DoT to oversee the telecom sector reforms 2.0 is expected to submit a report to the department by the end of this month. New Telecom Sector Reforms to be Announced in July-August TimeframeIt is worth noting that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is already preparing for 5G spectrum auctions. However, parallelly, the department has also been working on introducing the next set of reforms as soon as possible. The PTI report suggests that the announcement will likely come in July – August 2022 timeframe. This time, the reforms will focus on different areas such as satellite telephony, wireless WPC, licensing, and more. The goal of the government is to make doing business for the telcos as soon as possible. A relief for the telecom sector was inevitable as the government can't ignore the industry with only three private players where one could have been knocked out if the relief package hadn't arrived. With only two private players in the scene, duopoly would have come into the market. The telecom services have been very important and have acted as the backbone of the industry during the coronavirus pandemic. Without the telecom operators and the telecom industry, the spread of crucial information across the country would have been very hard during essential times. It will be interesting to see what exactly the government has planned for the sector this time. |

| India Records Median Mobile Download Speed of 14.28 Mbps in May 2022: Ookla Posted: 20 Jun 2022 12:17 AM PDT
Ookla has just released the Speedtest Global Index for the month of May 2022. As per the company, India recorded a median mobile download speed of 14.28 Mbps in May 2022. It is a slight improvement from the 14.19 Mbps in April 2022. This has pushed India from the 118th position in April to the 115th position in the global ranking in May. At the same time, India went one rank up in the fixed-broadband speed global rankings to 75th position. What's interesting to note here is that the median download speeds on fixed broadband witnessed a slight dip from 48.09 Mbps in April 2022 to 47.86 Mbps in May 2022. Norway and Singapore at the TopOokla said that Norway and Singapore are at the top of the list for delivering the fastest global mobile speeds and fixed broadband speeds. Norway recorded a median mobile download speed of 129.40 Mbps, while Singapore recorded a median fixed-broadband download speed of 209.21 Mbps. Ookla has a Speedtest app which records the data whenever users leverage the app to check the speed of their internet connection. This data is then utilised by Ookla to determine the average download speeds. Note that the data could be slightly different from the reality. Not everyone in India with a good internet connection might be using Ookla for checking speeds. The median mobile download speed, however, should not be this less for a country such as India. The network capacity issue is certainly there for the Indian telecom operators, and 5G should help with getting rid of that problem. However, when it comes to 4G networks, things should improve once BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) comes into the picture with the 4G launch. That should help with traffic distribution in a major way and might contribute to reducing network congestion scenarios at peak times in metro cities. |
| Telcos Ask Govt to Ensure No Third-Parties Allowed in Setting Up Private 5G Networks Posted: 19 Jun 2022 09:59 PM PDT
Captive private 5G networks have become the talk of the town. The government, at the end of the day, has decided to side with the tech companies by allowing them to get the airwaves directly from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for setting up private 5G networks. The telcos have now requested the government to ensure that the private 5G networks are only allowed to be set up by the "end users". The telcos don't want any third-party companies to be involved in this as it would give these other companies a backdoor entry into telecom services, said an ET Telecom report. Third-Party Companies Should Also Get Spectrum from DoTOn June 18, 2022, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) wrote to the telecom secretary, K Rajaraman and said that if the third-party companies want to provide, install and operate captive private networks, they should be asked to get the spectrum from the auctions just the way telcos do. COAI is the representative body of the Indian private telcos, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio. The industry body was against the concept of administratively allocating the airwaves to the enterprises for private 5G. The operators believe that it is a loss of revenue for them as the enterprises won't require them to set up private 5G networks anymore. The date for the spectrum auction is July 26, 2022. The telcos aren't expected to bid too heavily given the steep pricing and the fact that their enterprise revenues are in potential danger. The tech bodies believe that the telcos will still have other areas to help and make money even if they are not directly setting up the enterprise captive private 5G network. The governments of multiple countries are allowing the enterprises to directly get the spectrum for setting up private 5G networks, and the same will happen in India as well. |
| Vodafone Idea Equity Conversion for Govt Will Complete Before 5G Spectrum Auction Posted: 19 Jun 2022 09:27 PM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, is gearing up for 5G spectrum auction. The telco is not expected to bid heavily, but it will still look at acquiring some airwaves necessary for the 5G rollout. However, before the spectrum auction, the government will complete the process of taking equity from Vi. Vodafone Idea will be ridden of Rs 16,133 crore worth of interest dues by giving the same amount in the form of equity to the government. This process will be done in two to three weeks of time; a senior government official told Financial Express. The telecom operator will issue the shares to the government on a preference basis. Equity Conversion Really Important for Vodafone IdeaThe CEO of Vodafone Idea, Ravinder Takkar, had previously said that the telco is very close to raising Rs 20,000 crore from external investors. But that isn't happening because the government is yet to finish the process of taking up equity in the company. Once that is done, and everything is in the clear, the external investors might pick up a stake in the company. In addition to this, Vodafone Idea has announced that its board is going to meet on June 22, 2022, to raise funds up to Rs 500 crore via equity shares or convertible warrants on a preferential basis to one or more entities belonging to Vodafone Group UK. Things are rolling fast in the Indian telecom sector, and Vodafone Idea desperately needs access to funds to keep up with the competition. The company has not made any money since the merger, and that has limited its capacity to invest in the network and other important infrastructure. It will be interesting to see whether Vodafone Idea can get access to funds from external investors before the spectrum auction kicks off. If the telco is able to do that, it will be a great thing for its 5G rollout plans. |
| Vodafone Idea Board to Meet on June 22 to Discuss Rs 500 Crore Fundraising Posted: 19 Jun 2022 08:07 PM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the ailing telecom operator has said that its board is going to meet on June 22, 2022 (Wednesday) for considering a proposal for raising up to Rs 500 crore. The telco said in a BSE filing that its board will discuss a Rs 500 crore fundraising via issuance of equity shares or convertible warrants on a preferential basis to one or more entities belonging to Vodafone Group UK, the largest promoter of the company. Vodafone Idea Shuts Down Trading for Designated PeopleThe telco said that all the designated people in the company will not be able to trade securities of Vodafone Idea till 48 hours from the conclusion of the board meeting. This means the designed people in Vi will be able to trade securities of the telco only from June 25, 2022. The move is in line with the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (SEBI's) Insider Trading Regulations and the company's Code of Conduct to regulate, monitor, and report trading by designated persons in listed or proposed to be listed securities of the company. The amount that Vi's board is discussing raising isn't big enough to help the telco in any major material manner. But something is better than nothing. Vi hasn't been able to raise funds from external investors and thus is looking for help from the promoters. The Vodafone Group UK already has the biggest stake in the company. But that will change once the government takes its share of equity against the interest dues that Vi owes. Vodafone Idea's stock (listed as IDEA) closed in the red at Rs 8.20 on Friday. The value of the stock has come down significantly over the months after going to Rs 14 to Rs 15 levels. A fundraising and aggressive boost in network performance can only help the telco in retaining users and adding new ones. |
| Airtel, Jio and Vi Must Do This to Win Over Customers: Opinion Posted: 19 Jun 2022 06:29 PM PDT
Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), the three private telecom operators in India, have a big challenge in giving satisfactory services to all consumers. There's a phrase that goes – "You can't make everyone happy", and with hundreds of millions of users, it becomes even more relevant for the telcos. The telecom operators are service providers, and all they look to do is provide services better than their competitors to earn more. Note that the goal of the operators is likely to outshine the competitors, so if the competitors are weak, the services of the leading telco are likely going to be slightly better than weak. In simple words, the ecosystem of telecom services matters a lot because it sets the tone for the operators to offer the kind of services they are offering. So, if the ecosystem is a little weak, even the best operator would be offering slightly weak services. There's one thing that the telcos can do to win over their customers with a sense to provide the best services. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) all have an area where they can improve – customer care service. After-sales service or customer care service actually matters a lot when you are valuing a business and its performance. Everyone makes mistakes, and inconsistencies are inevitable. What matters is how quickly and in a painless manner can you resolve that issue. If you go on Twitter today, there are thousands of complaints every day about the services of all the telcos, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Apart from network services, there's a big case and opportunity for the telcos to get an edge over their competitors by investing more in issue-resolving activities. Which Telecom Operators Offer Best Customer Care Services Right Now?It is hard to pinpoint that right now. But there's one thing – there are customers everywhere in the country who haven't received a satisfactory response from the telecom operators' customer care teams and are still facing the problem they complained about. It should be the job of the telecom companies to set up transparent problem-solving mechanisms. With the 5G launch in the books, the digitalisation of India would skyrocket, and at that point, the consumers would want to be near the operators more than ever. There's a clear gap today in the communication between the consumers and the telcos. This is certainly something that the government needs to look into as well. |
