5G

Enterprises are definitely going to benefit from the rollout of 5G in India. Indian enterprises are looking to start using the 5G network in the coming few years. According to an Ericsson and Omdia study, 52% of the Indian enterprises want to start using 5G in the next 12 months and a further 31% of enterprises want to leverage it by 2024. This means that over 83% of the enterprises are looking to use 5G networks by 2024 in India. Omdia said the top-ranked benefits of 5G are superior network performance enabling automation and new methods of working.

Quality of Service Matters More than Price

The Omdia study revealed that the quality of service with 5G is more important for the users than the price.

For enterprises, these are the top 5G use cases – real-time video analytics, enhanced content streaming, drones, and control of autonomous vehicles.
Omdia said that Indian telcos need a balanced portfolio of spectrum assets for delivering 5G services that both the consumers as well as the enterprises want. This includes a mix of low-band spectrum for coverage, mmWave airwaves for capacity, and the mid-bands for both.

The report mentioned that 5G rollout will be profoundly different from what we saw with 4G. The adoption of 5G services is also expected to happen at a faster rate given the fact that millions of consumers already own 5G smartphones and the enterprises are also ready for the rollout of 5G to gain benefits from it.

The telcos do have a serious opportunity with the 5G rollout in their hands to open up new revenue streams. The spectrum auction for India has been declared and the date has been set for July 26. The rollout of 5G networks is expected to be around August – September 2022. It is expected that the Indian private telcos might not participate heavily in the upcoming spectrum auction.

Ericsson Says Average Monthly Data Usage Per Device Will Go Up to 50GB by 2027 With 5G in India

Ericsson

Ericsson, a globally renowned telecom gear and technology vendor released an updated version of the 'Ericsson Mobility Report' via a virtual briefing. In its insights for India, Ericsson said that with 5G, the average monthly data consumption per device will go up to 50GB per month by 2027 from 20GB per month in 2021.

5G

Dr Thiaw Seng Ng, Head of Network Evolution, SEA, Oceania and India, Ericsson said the total mobile traffic in the India region is estimated to grow by a factor of 4 between 2021 and 2027. The growth will be driven by a rise in the number of smartphone users in the coming months and years.

There Will be About 500 Million 5G Subscriptions in India by 2022

5G

The report said that by 2027, 39% of the total mobile subscriptions will be 5G connections. In exact numbers, there would be about 500 million 5G subscriptions in India by 2022, said Ericsson. 4G's contribution will be dropping over the years to 55% in 2027. In exact numbers, there would be about 700 million 4G subscriptions in the country by 2027.

Ericsson said that North America will be leading the 5G subscription penetration in the next five years with nine-out-every-ten subscriptions in the region expected to be 5G connections by 2027.

The report from Ericsson mentions that 5G is scaling faster than all the previous mobile technology generations. It is true as 5G smartphone sales are rising in India every subsequent quarter while there are absolutely zero live commercial 5G networks. This is an encouraging sign for the Indian telecom operators as they make their investments with respect to 5G.

One thing that's worth noting here is that 4G will still be very much relevant in 2027 and this is an opportunity for a telco such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to go ahead and build a strong business around consumer mobile services with 4G launch.

Oppo Pad Air With Snapdragon 680 SoC Expected to Go Live Soon in India

Oppo Pad Air

Oppo Pad Air launch is around the corner for India. It will be the first tablet from the company in the country. It makes sense as well, as OnePlus is also reportedly working on a tablet. The device has been spotted in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) database. Note that Oppo Pad Air had already launched for the China market, and thus its specifications are out. Let's take a look at some of the details that have surfaced about the tablet.

Oppo Pad Air Specifications and Other Details

The popular tipster Mukul Sharma aka @stufflistings on Twitter, has revealed that the Oppo Pad Air has been found listed on the BIS certification website. The device carries the model number OPD2102A. The database doesn't give any details about the specifications of the tablet. However, it won't be too wrong to assume that the launch of the product is very close to us now.

The Oppo Pad Air is expected to go live in India with the Oppo Reno8 series. If the device comes with the same specifications as the China variant, it will come with a 10.36-inch LCD screen with a 1200×2000 pixels resolution. There might be Oppo Pencil Stylus support which will come with the ColorOS 12 UI based on Android 12 OS.

The China variant has a 5MP sensor at the front and an 8MP sensor at the rear. The device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC, which might not be the most powerful option Oppo could have gone ahead with. In China, the Oppo Pad Air was launched for 1,299 Yuan, which is around Rs 15,065. The device is available in black and silver colours. In India as well, it would be an affordable tablet only.

It could definitely be a good option for students and moderate users who just want to use the tablet for basic tasks.

5G Arrival in India Would Spur Data Consumption, a Solid Digital Infra is Required

5G

With the launch of 5G networks in India, the total data consumption by the Indians will grow significantly. The date for the 5G spectrum auction has also been announced. To prepare for such a future, India needs a strong digital infrastructure. TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) chairman, P.D. Vaghela, said that Wi-Fi providers and the telecom service providers (TSPs) need to work together to unleash the combined power of Wi-Fi technology and mobile to improve the digital infrastructure.

5G Launch in Other Countries Spurred Data Consumption

Speaking at the Broadband India Forum (BIF), the TRAI chief said that working together would be a win-win situation for the telecom as well as Wi-Fi companies. Both the telcos and the Wi-Fi service providers need to work collaboratively to develop innovative business models, said Vaghela.

According to a PTI report, Vaghela said that public Wi-Fi is going to benefit the country and its economy as those who are digitally excluded can have broadband connectivity access through Wi-Fi.

The Indian government had set a target of setting up around 10 million public Wi-Fi hotspots by 2022. Vaghela said that India is very behind this target.

There is definitely a big case for public Wi-Fi hotspots in India offering data for free to a certain extent and then charging a nominal amount of money from the users. This would ensure that even when the telcos keep hiking tariffs, low-earning consumers will have somewhere to look.

5G is around the corner, and the mobile tariffs are just not going to be the way they used to be two years back. With public Wi-Fi hotspots, consumers can save some money on mobile data bills and also offload some traffic from the mobile networks. One of the biggest issues that Indian consumers face right now is congested networks, and Wi-Fi hotspots can help with solving that issue in a big way.

5G Spectrum Auction: Telecom Operators Ask for Clarity on Plenty of Things

Posted: 20 Jun 2022 09:05 PM PDT

5G Spectrum

The 5G spectrum auction was announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) last week. The auction date has been set for July 26 and it will be an e-auction. But there are a lot of things that are still unclear for the telecom operators. The telcos have sought clarification from the Department of Telecommunication on several matters including the private 5G.

According to an ET Telecom report, during the pre-bid auctions, the telcos asked the DoT on which browser will the final e-auction take place? This is because the e-auction was supposed to take place on Microsoft Internet Explorer. However, that browser had officially retired on June 15, 2022.

Apart from this, the telcos wanted to know the methodology in which the enterprises will be allotted 5G spectrum for captive private networks.

Further, telcos wanted to know the price at which these airwaves would be allotted to the enterprises and the spectrum band that the government is planning to reserve for them.

Telcos Want Government to Ensure No Backdoor Entries to the Sector are There

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) had written to the government authorities asking to ensure that the third parties are not allowed to set up the captive private 5G networks for the enterprises. This is to see that there are no backdoor entries in the telecom services space.

Further, the telcos stressed the fact that the government should only allow M2M applications with the spectrum allocated to the enterprises for private 5G. The companies should not be able to offer the services of the private network to their employees in their homes and more.

The DoT will have to come up with a precise answer to all of these questions and address the issues that the telcos have. The pre-bid conference was organised by the telecom department to seek telcos' concerns on the matters in NIA (Notice Inviting Application).
