Vodafone Idea Defers Rs 8837 Crore Worth of AGR Dues

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 06:32 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country has decided to defer Rs 8837 crore worth of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues for four years. The option to do this was given to the telco by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Vodafone Idea will now pay the said amount in six equal instalments post the moratorium period starting from March 31, 2026.

The company said that the old communication from DoT dated October 14, 2021, provided deferment of AGR-related dues as determined by the Supreme Court (SC) in the AGR case, by a period of four years. This covered all the AGR dues up to the period FY2016-17 (dues which were included in the SC order).

But on June 15, 2022, DoT further communicated with Vodafone Idea that the telco can opt for a moratorium of four years for all AGR-related dues up to FY2018-19, which were not included in the SC order dated September 1, 2020.

DoT Asked for an Answer from Vodafone Idea Withing 15 Days

DoT had given Vi fifteen days for responding. Thus, the last date for responding was June 30, 2022, as the letter was given on June 15, 2022. DoT said that the company can also give equity to the government against the interest dues for these AGR-related payments. The answer for this has to be provided by Vi within 90 days. If Vi decides to exercise this right, the government would get an even larger stake in the telco.

Vodafone Idea's board on Wednesday said that it approves the exercise for the option of deferment of AGR-related dues by a period of four years with immediate effect. The telco said that the AGR-related dues amount mentioned in the DoT letter was Rs 8,837 crore. But the amount is subject to revision on account of the disposal of various representations. It will be interesting to see whether the same option is exercised by Bharti Airtel.

Vodafone Idea Board Approves Rs 436.21 Crore Raise, How Will it Affect the Company

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 07:44 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been struggling to get a grip on the Indian market. While the telco's roots go long back in history, somehow, it has not managed to make a single rupee since the merger in 2018. To sort out its issues, the telco, just like every other major business is looking for funds from multiple sources to keep the business running. But it has been a difficult journey for Vi in terms of getting access to fresh capital.

The telco's board had approved a fundraiser of Rs 25,000 back in September 2020. However, to date, the telco hasn't been able to raise funds from any external investor. It has constantly been looking to its promoters for help.

Now, Vodafone Idea's (Vi) board on Wednesday has approved a Rs 436.21 crore raise from the Vodafone Group UK. The company issued a statement saying that the board has approved the fundraising by the issuance of either – a) 42,76,56,421 equity shares of the face value of Rs 10 each or b) up to 42,76,56,421 warrants convertible into equity shares.

But how will this affect the company?

Vodafone Idea Not in a Great Position Anyway

Objectively looking, any help is a positive for the telco. But it is not even nearly enough to put Vi in a stable position. The telco will arguably need more than Rs 436.21 crore to pay the 10% upfront fee for the spectrum acquired through the upcoming auction. Further, the money is not even enough to expand 4G networks aggressively.

In simple words, while Rs 436.21 crore is not nothing; it isn't a significant amount either. This kind of money will likely make a negligible difference in the business of the telco. However, one great thing is that Vi is already working to improve its networks.

The telco announced network improvements in Chhattisgarh and MP circle recently. In addition to that, TRAI MyCall data suggests that Vi's mobile network is better than Jio and Vi in voice quality.

Samsung Reportedly to Mass Produce iPhone 14 Display in Q3

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 05:53 AM PDT

Samsung

The iPhone 14 series is anticipated to be released by Apple in September of this year. And as would be expected, there have been numerous rumours floating around regarding the smartphone line. According to a new claim from Korea IT, Samsung will provide roughly 80 million OLED panels for the iPhone 14 in response to a previous report that Apple is testing display panels from China's BOE. Samsung Display, according to the publication, will provide 38.17 million panels exclusively for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus (also rumoured as iPhone 14 Max) out of the 80 million devices in total.

Apple to source OLEDs from Samsung for the iPhone 14 series

Apple is anticipated to introduce a total of four iPhone 14 series devices this year. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, are standard iPhone models, whereas the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max are Pro variants. The displays on the normal and Pro variants will be 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch, respectively.

According to a rumour, Samsung Display would provide up to 80 million OLED panels for the iPhone 14 variants. Not only that, the new iPhone 14 series uses low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO)-based thin firm transistors (TFT) with great power efficiency and low-temperature poly silicon (LTPS)-based TFTs with high charge transfer and stability.

Citing people acquainted with the situation, the third quarter of this year is when bulk production and delivery of the Samsung Display panels are expected to start. After the major components, including OLED panels, are delivered, the next iPhone family is anticipated to make its debut in the second part of this year.

Not only that, but to mass-produce and supply its OLED panels, Samsung Display reportedly collaborates with companies including Duksan Neolux, Solus Advanced Materials, and Samsung SDI. Since the release of the iPhone X in 2017, the business has been significantly providing its OLED screens to Apple. Due to the increasing sales of the most recent iPhone models, it is also claimed to have delivered the greatest display volume this year.

Tata Play Services to Enhance Further in India

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 05:19 AM PDT

Tata Play

Tata Play, earlier Tata Sky is going to get a boost in its services after the launch of the GSAT-24 satellite in space. The GSAT-24 has an expected life of about 15 years, and it will help with providing high-quality telecommunications, television, and broadcasting services which will meet the Direct-to-Home (DTH) needs of Indian customers.

Tata Play has taken the GSAT-24 satellite capacity on lease from NSIL (NewSpace India Limited). NSIL is owned by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), and it has undertaken the GSAT-24 satellite mission. This will be the first demand-driven mission for NSIL post the space reforms.

The satellite will be launched on June 22 via Arianespace from Kourou in French Guiana, and the total payload of the satellite is approximately 10,863 Kg.

Tata Play Services to Get Better in India

With this new satellite, Tata Play will come to an even better position in providing reliable and seamless DTH services to consumers. The company has been pivoting to OTT offerings as well and is definitely going to want an edge over its competition in the DTH segment as well.

NSIL was formed by the Indian government to undertake operational satellite missions on a 'demand-driven' model. According to a TechRadar report, the body will now help with launching the GSAT-24, and it would enable Tata Play to offer better services to its consumers.

Tata Play is already the largest DTH player in the country. The DTH operator made heads turn when it announced that it would be launching Netflix bundled TV plans. Not only Netflix, under the OTT Combo plans offered by the company, users can get more than 10 OTT platforms along with their normal satellite TV subscription. Tata Play is definitely moving faster than its competitors in almost every direction, and that will play a major role in keeping the company at the leader position.

Airtel, Jio, and Vi Will be Very Happy With DoT After SUC Order

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 03:09 AM PDT

Airtel Jio Vi

Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) will be very happy with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) after the SUC (Spectrum Usage Charges) order. The telecom department has removed the 3% floor rate on SUC and this would help the telcos in saving a lot of future outflows towards these statutory fees.

The telecom operators had recently told DoT that while removing SUC from future spectrum acquired through auctions is a good move, it wouldn't mean anything if the SUC floor rate of 3% of AGR (adjusted gross revenue) is not removed.

The Indian government had implanted the rule of 3% SUC in 2016 to ensure that the revenues for the centre are protected. In the same year, the SUC for the telcos had been lowered.

On June 21 order, DoT said that "The weighted average is to be derived by the sum of the product of spectrum holdings and applicable SUC rate, divided by (a telco's) total spectrum holding."

Liquidity Concerns Being Addressed by the Government

The Indian government is addressing the liquidity concerns of the telcos. Airtel, Jio, and Vi (Vodafone Idea) will all benefit from this move. Without the floor of 3%, the SUC equivalent to 3% of the AGR for the telcos would drop well below 3%. This means that the telcos will be able to save a lot of money that otherwise would have gone out as statutory dues.

Through all the relief measures announced till now, the government has been focusing on reducing liquidity stress from the telcos. The telecom operators got a four-moratorium for payment of AGR and SUC dues and Vi has also agreed to give the government stake in the company against the reduction of interest dues. This is going to benefit the telecom sector in the long run and boost India's journey into turning a digital nation.

Lt. Gen. Dr. S P Kochhar, DG, COAI, said “We welcome and thank the Government & Minister of Communications for the much-awaited DoT order regarding the levy of SUC charges for spectrum in 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands. The order will provide clarity to telecom service providers for the upcoming auctions.”

BSNL and TCS Not on the Same Page with 4G Rollout Cost

Posted: 22 Jun 2022 12:42 AM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and its technology partner for the 4G, TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) are reportedly not on the same page with regard to the cost of network rollout. TCS is not happy with the cost that BSNL wants to get things done in. As per an ET Telecom report, BSNL had released a purchase order for procuring 4G equipment for over 6,000 sites on March 31 for Rs 360 crore. This cost is 56% lesser than what the state-run telco had offered to Nokia in 2018 for phase VIII expansion.

BSNL hasn't accepted the price that is offered by TCS yet and a high-level meeting for the matter is in the books pretty soon. Regardless of the price issue, BSNL is on track to go with a limited 4G launch on August 15, 2022.

Cost for TCS Has Gone Up, BSNL Needs to Take a Call

BSNL should not be stuck up with the cost issues right now. There have been enough delays already. The cost for TCS in manufacturing and setting up the equipment has gone up in line with the rise in component pricing, escalated labour wages, and more. Thus, it wouldn't make sense for TCS to work with BSNL for such low pricing.

Moreover, the ripple effect of what BSNL is doing right now would show in the motivation of the other local companies working on homegrown products. This would seriously demotivate even TCS to work with BSNL long-term.

The conservative approach of BSNL needs to change here and the telco needs to understand that it can't afford more delays. Saankhya Labs and Lekha Wireless would also provide BSNL with low-powered radios for rolling out 4G networks in rural areas of the country.

BSNL can definitely turn things around for itself and the telecom industry. But for that to happen, things need to roll fast and the state-run telco must take a decision quickly on the matter.

4G Is Not Going Away for Years, BSNL Has a Chance to Scare Private Competitors

Posted: 21 Jun 2022 11:26 PM PDT

4G

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is struggling because of the simple fact that it doesn't have 4G yet. The state-run telco is planning to launch 4G networks in multiple parts of the country by the end of 2022. On Tuesday, Ericsson said that 4G is still going to account for 55% of the mobile connections by 2027. This means that 4G is definitely going to be relevant at least till the end of this decade. BSNL will be very happy listening to that.

In a country such as India, where there are only three private telecom players (Airtel, Jio, and Vi), BSNL would become a fresh option for the consumers. The state-run telco can potentially snatch a major subscriber market share from the private telcos, which will intensify the competition. BSNL could offer unique plans which are nothing like what users get with the private players. Moreover, BSNL could position itself as the affordable 4G player in India, which would definitely attract millions of low-paying customers to go for BSNL's services.

Will Private Players Expand 4G Networks or Focus on 5G?

Well, the answer to this would depend on the manner the company wants to scale its business. 5G networks would predominantly be required by the enterprises because of the automation it can enable. 4G networks are still more than enough for consumer applications, and they are definitely going to be the first choice for many, as 5G could be a tad bit more expensive.

However, companies such as Jio and Airtel, generating free cash flows, can definitely pump more for rolling out 5G for consumers at scale. Initially, only the major urban and metro cities are going to see 5G rollout, but in the following years, other parts of India will also be covered with 5G networks.

BSNL right now doesn't scare the private telcos because it is a legacy network player. But in the near future, the entire dynamic of the telecom industry will change once BSNL has active 4G networks in multiple parts of the nation.

BSNL is also gearing up for 5G as it rolls out 4G. Hopefully, with 5G, there are no delays like what happened with 4G.

Samsung Galaxy M13 5G to Come With MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC

Posted: 21 Jun 2022 10:21 PM PDT

Samsung

Samsung is reportedly going to launch the Galaxy M13 5G in India. It would definitely be priced in the budget segment. The Galaxy M series devices are also known for packing big-sized batteries. MySmartPrice has leaked that the Galaxy M13 5G will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC. It is a 5G chipset made for budget devices. Other details about the smartphone have been leaked as well. Let's take a look.

Samsung Galaxy M13 5G Specifications (Leaked)

Samsung Galaxy M13 5G is expected to come with a 6.5-inch LCD touchscreen display with HD+ resolution. It is likely to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Samsung is also expected to allow users to expand the RAM and increase the internal storage to 1TB with a microSD card.

What's interesting to note here is that the report from the publication suggests that the Galaxy M13 5G would come with support for 11 5G bands. This is definitely something that is going to affect the price of the smartphone at the end of the day.

At the back, the Galaxy M13 5G is expected to come with a 50MP primary sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor and a 5MP sensor at the front for selfies and video calling.

The Galaxy M13 5G is expected to come in the following colour options – Green, Blue, and Brown. Samsung is also expected to bring the Galaxy M13 to India. It is worth noting that Samsung hasn't announced anything regarding the device officially, so take all of this information with a grain of salt.

Indian users are definitely looking for an affordable 5G smartphone with support for multiple 5G bands. Thus, if the above leaks are correct, then the Galaxy M13 5G could become a top option for the users in the affordable 5G segment.

Telegram Premium Will Come in India for Rs 460

Posted: 21 Jun 2022 09:18 PM PDT

Telegram

Telegram Premium has been launched globally. If you update the app on your smartphone, you will be able to see the 'Premium' plan inside the app. Its cost has been set at Rs 460 in India, and it will bring a lot of new features to the table as well as enhanced capabilities for the users to send big files and join a greater number of channels. Here's everything you should know about Telegram Premium.

Telegram Premium Features in India

Telegram Premium will give users the ability to join up to 1000 channels, create 20 public links, and connect four accounts with four different phone numbers. There are more things which have been doubled, such as the ability to save up to 400 GIFs (free users can only save up to 200 GIFs).

The upload size will be increased from 2GB to 4GB for documents. Further, users will get the ability to read the transcript of any incoming audio message. There will be no more ads in public channels where Telegram sometimes displays ads. Things such as premium stickers and more will also be accessible by the users.

Premium users will also get a badge displaying that they are supporting Telegram. There will be Premium app icons as well, which users can choose as per their wish. You can find out more about the Telegram Premium by simply downloading the app on your smartphone, signing in with your phone number, going to Settings, and then finding Telegram Premium.

Honestly, it is quite an expensive plan for Indians. It would have made more sense had it been under Rs 200 per month. All the features that are currently there will still be available for free, and users don't have to worry about a bad experience with the free usage. Telegram has introduced the Premium plan globally, and it will be interesting to witness how successful it will be.

5G Phones Make More Sense in the Semi-Midrange Price Segment

Posted: 21 Jun 2022 08:37 PM PDT

5G

If you are looking for a smartphone today, it is most likely a 5G device. While 4G networks are still going to be important, users would definitely like to invest in a 5G smartphone rather than a 4G one if they are spending a significant sum of money. 5G rollout isn't far from here, as the spectrum auction is slated for July 26, 2022.

As per an ET Telecom report, Navkendar Singh, research director at IDC India, said that 4G devices priced upwards of Rs 15,000 wouldn't be the top choice anymore as the market has shifted to 5G. At the same time, bringing 5G smartphones under Rs 10,000 is not possible right now because of the inflated cost of components and the chipsets. Thus, the bracket of Rs 10,000 – Rs 15,000 is where the brands will try their best to bring more 5G phones.

5G Chips in General Cost 3x of 4G Chips

According to Sravan Kundojjala, director of Strategy Analytics, the cost of 5G chips is 3x of what 4G chipsets cost in general. While this is making the chip vendors Qualcomm and MediaTek rich, it is also making the smartphones expensive for the end-users.

Today, the average selling price of 5G smartphones is Rs 32,000 (Counterpoint Research data). There could be two things – a) users are purchasing more high-end smartphones, or b) there are no good 5G phones in the budget segment. Both can be partly true at the same time.

Smartphone makers can potentially reduce the price of the device by lowering the number of bands supported and toning down the display and the camera to reduce the price of 5G smartphones. But in that case, it would be mostly a bad deal for the users who are spending their hard-earned money on a 4G device. No one wants to compromise on the display and the camera specifications of a smartphone.

BSNL Gives Rs 399 Plan With 80 Days Validity, See What Airtel and Vi Offer

Posted: 21 Jun 2022 06:31 PM PDT

BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is known as the telco which offers the most affordable tariffs in India. There are many plans that users can take from BSNL, which are also offered by private players for the same price. However, you will notice that the plans from BSNL offer way more benefits than what users get with the same priced plans from the private telecom operators. Let's take a look at the Rs 399 plan offered by BSNL and what Airtel and Vi offer for the same price.

BSNL Rs 399 Prepaid Plan

BSNL offers its Rs 399 prepaid plan with 80 days of validity. This is a good option for someone who is looking for a medium-term plan for an affordable price. Users get 1GB of daily data with this plan, after which the speed is reduced to 80 Kbps. Unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day is also bundled with the total benefits. There is also free BSNL Tunes and Lokdhun content.

Bharti Airtel Rs 399 Prepaid Plan

Bharti Airtel offers its Rs 399 prepaid plan with a short validity of 28 days. Users get 2.5GB of daily data along with unlimited voice calling, 100 SMS/day, and Airtel Thanks benefits. The additional benefits of this plan also include a major over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Disney+ Hotstar Mobile for three months.

Vodafone Idea Rs 399 Prepaid Plan

Vodafone Idea also offers the same benefits as the Airtel plan mentioned above. But the only difference between Airtel's plan and Vi's plan here is in the additional benefits. This prepaid from Vi comes with Hero Unlimited benefits and a free OTT subscription of Disney+ Hotstar Mobile for three months, and Vi Movies & TV VIP access.

Vi Hero Unlimited benefits include three things – Weekend Data Rollover, Data Delights, and Binge all Night. These additional benefits from Vi are unmatched by any private telco.

If you notice all the plans here, you will understand that the BSNL plan comes with a longer validity while the private telcos offer shorter validity plans for Rs 399 with a major OTT benefit and more daily data.

Vodafone Idea Offers 90GB Monthly Mobile Data With this Plan

Posted: 21 Jun 2022 08:55 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, is giving its users 90GB of lumpsum monthly data with a Rs 499 plan. But this is not a conventional prepaid or postpaid plan. This is a plan that is offered to the users with a MiFi device. If you are wondering what a MiFi device is, it is a portable Wi-Fi hotspot device that allows users to stay connected to the internet while on the move. Today, we are looking at a plan that is offered to the consumers with this device.

Vodafone Idea Rs 499 MiFi Plan

Vodafone Idea offers the Rs 499 MiFi plan with 90GB of monthly data with 200GB data rollover. For excess data, users will be charged Rs 20/GB of data. There's a slightly cheaper plan available as well. That plan comes for Rs 399 and offers 50GB of data, again with 200GB data rollover and each GB additional for Rs 20.

If you are a new MiFi user, then you will also have to pay Rs 2,000 for the device. It is a one-time cost for the device that is payable at the time of the delivery.

Vi says that the dongle can support up to 150 Mbps of download speed and 50 Mbps of upload speed. The speeds, of course, depend on the kind of network connectivity you are getting. The product can run for up to 5 to 6 hours on a full charge. A total of 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices can be connected with the Vi MiFi.

It is definitely going to be a carrier-locked device, meaning you won't be able to run Jio and Airtel SIMs inside the device. You need to pick Vi plans curated specially for the Vi MiFi.

The biggest advantage of this product is that you can connect multiple devices such as Smart TV, laptop, and more without eating up your mobile data.

Vodafone Idea Foundation Sets Up a Skill Training Center in Hamirpur

Posted: 21 Jun 2022 06:48 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea Foundation, the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) arm of Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator in the country, on Tuesday announced that it has set up a skill training center in Hamirpur which will offer dedicated employment linked skill training to economically and socially challenged youth within their vicinity.

For the formal inauguration of the center, Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports, was invited. P Balaji, the Chief Regulatory and Corporates Affair officer of Vodafone Idea Foundation, was present as well.

Anurag Thakur flagged off Vodafone Idea Foundation's 'Jaady Ginni ka' mobile van. This initiative will help the government of India in taking India's digital literacy to the next level.

Thakur said that it is important for the youth of India to be a part of the skilled workforce to aid their economic and personal empowerment. The minister further added that Vodafone Idea Foundation's mobile van under the aegis of PMGDISHA would help with imparting education on digital as well as financial literacy to several communities in the region.

Vodafone Idea Foundation's Skill Training Center Is Equipped With Computers and a Retail Lab

Vodafone Idea Foundation's skill training center has been made in partnership with the Sambhav Foundation. The skill training center has been equipped with computers and retail labs for practical implementation of theoretical knowledge. The company said that students learning through this skill centre would get face-to-face counselling and formative and summative assessments.

This is a move in the right direction from the telco. India is home to the largest youth population in the world, and that gives the country a huge potential to work towards a better economy and create global dominance.

Vodafone Idea's stock was up 6.29% on the NSE at Tuesday’s close trading at Rs 8.45. The telco's fundraiser announcement has made the investors upbeat about Vi's stock.

ACT

ACT Fibernet, a popular internet service provider (ISP) in multiple parts of India, has said that its Wi-Fi hotspots across the country have seen data consumption of over 2500TB of data. For the unaware, the company has been doing a very noble act of offering free internet data through its Wi-Fi hotspots installed in multiple major cities of India. ACT Fibernet said that it installed over 4300+ Wi-Fi hotspots in cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai in 2021. These hotspots saw the data users consuming 2500TB of data.

As per ACT, there were over 1.4 million unique users accessing the internet through the Wi-Fi hotspots of ACT, and each of them consumed over 1.8GB of internet data.

ACT Has Installed Wi-Fi Hotspots in Crucial Places of these Cities

ACT Fibernet has installed all of these Wi-Fi hotspots in crucial places in the above-mentioned cities, including hospitals, bus stops, malls, public libraries, parks and schools. All of these places usually have congested mobile networks because of the large number of users in the same area.

One of the biggest benefits of these Wi-Fi hotspots is to the mobile operators only. There is often the issue of network congestion during peak hours in India. These Wi-Fi hotspots work as an effective tool for the telcos to offload data traffic.

Further, people who can afford to pay and purchase mobile data on a daily also benefit a lot from these Wi-Fi hotspots. Students can download important study materials and see important courses online and more with the free data that ACT Fibernet Wi-Fi hotspots offer.

With these Wi-Fi hotspots, ACT users can get the same speed they are getting from their home broadband connection. When logging in through the same credentials as the home network, users, if they get 100 Mbps speed at their home, will get 100 Mbps speed through these hotspots as well.
Other users can also sign in by entering their phone number and entering the OTP for using the internet free at 40 Mbps up to 1GB for 45 minutes.
